You can't find Indian food like this in the States! Every dish was beautifully presented, with flavors that are bold yet delicate. Truly a unique and unforgettable experience.

I just have to start off by saying that this isn't the best Indian cuisine I've tried in London; that being said, it's also not the worst. It really depends on what you order. They have just about everything you could want on both the drinks and food menu. The problem is that only a few of the items really stand out and make you feel like you're getting what you paid for. This restaurant also encourages sharing, so you may want to bring a friend or two to get the most out of your experience. I only tried 2 of the cocktails, and while they didn't taste bad, there was something missing in both of them. If you like a good Old Fashioned, however, they have a Ghee-Washed Old Fashioned with fig liqueur that went down smoother than most I've had. Wine is also available by the glass or bottle. The food menu is almost panic-inducing with how many options there are. You can either go for one of their fixed menus where you get to choose one of a few items as a starter, a main, and dessert. Or, you can opt for the À La Carte and enjoy a bit more variety. Most of the things my friend and I ordered were pretty good, but nothing enormously special. Most things were either too spicy - mind you, we both like our spicy foods, so this was a bit much - or just underwhelming, like the Venison Kebabs that lacked a balance in flavor. The best thing I had was the spiced broccoli. As weird as it sounds, I've rarely tasted such a crispy and satisfying vegetable. The space itself has its own charm. It's part restaurant, part kitchen. So, if you like to watch your food being made, you're in for a treat. If not, you'll most likely find this place distracting.

We went to Tamarind for dinner last night and they had some of best food I've had. Ever. The Kebabs, the Lobster, the Lamb Chops, and the Chocolate Cake. All amazing. The Prawn Curry, however, was too hot and slightly watery.

This was a pretty solid dining experience, though given the choice between here and Jamavar, I would probably choose Jamavar. Still, service was good, the setting was nice, and most of the dishes were quite good. And the Ghee-Washed Old Fashioned was spectacular for a pre-dinner drink! Cheers!

Excellent experience. Incredibly helpful staff. The food is great and the ambiance is lovely. Centrally located, easy to get to.

Delicious one Michelin star experience! The food here was fantastic, the drinks were creative and delicious, and the service was great. My spouse is Indian and we were both pleasantly surprised with how delicious and authentic the cuisine was, I guess to be expected from a one Michelin star restaurant! We especially loved the cocktails. One of the cocktails we ordered was fat washed with ghee which lent the drink an incredibly complex flavor profile. We will definitely be back next time we're in London.

This is the best Indian food that I have experienced. It is very popular and you walk upstairs to where the dining room is located. It is very popular and I would highly recommend getting reservations. They have many excellent dining options and I decided to get the chef's menu so I could try different food. Absolutely everything I tried was fantastic with wonderful flavors and the textures and presentation was outstanding. It feels like you are in someone's home upstairs where they also have a small but impressive bar. I felt the prices were fair for such outstanding food, ambience and service which was excellent and friendly. I look forward to visiting again.

Awful that they don't allow kids under age 10 for dinner. We were so excited to have Indian for dinner. They should really rethink this!

All this talk about Gymkhana opening in Las Vegas...I mean, sure. But why bother going to Gymkhana…read moreat home when I can just go to the original Gymkhana in London? Gymkhana isn't trying to reinvent Indian food, but instead focuses on traditional, predominantly Northern Indian flavors and is cooked with precise execution. Despite the fact that I was not always agreeable with some of the flavor profiles (mainly because I haven't encountered them before), I can't deny everything was cooked to perfection. Ordered the Punjabi Samosa to start, the Tandoori Masala Lamb Chops, the Lasooni Wild Tiger Prawns, Chicken Butter Masala, amd Pork Cheek Vindaloo as entrées, and of course had to get some Basmati Rice and the Bread Basket (the fancy name for naan). Favorite dishes were easily the Tandoori Masala Lamb Chops and the Chicken Butter Masala. The Tandoori Masala Lamb Chops were massive and cooked perfectly medium rare with no gamey taste. And this Chicken Butter Masala is exactly how I envisioned the perfect butter chicken dish in my head. Service is...well, more normal restaurant than two Michelin star level. It was fine I suppose. Exactly what I would have expected from a restaurant of this level, but nothing special. The restaurant itself was not as big as I thought it would have been. Very nice decor inside and not super bright. The one thing I wasn't too keen on was the £150/pp minimum spend, which was especially grating because later timeslots had less of a minimum spend. I would have been more ok with it if the minimum spend was £100/pp, because you're 100% going to get there. Overall, I thought Gymkhana was a good experience that was worth trying. The food was tremendous for sure. I would be more of a fan if not for the high minimum spend because honestly I could just come here for the Chicken Butter Masala and some rice and be good. But alas, it is what it is.

The ambience is on point. The place is three levels and is very aesthetic. The aesthetic is different on each level. Definitely a vibe. 5/5 Food wise, it was okay for how expensive it is. I did the tasting menu for one, and I would not recommend this as this was a lot of food and I have some thoughts about the food as well. In retrospect, I would recommend getting a two appetizers and one entrée, and that should definitely be the lamb chop. I thought the pappadum and aloo chaat were great. The tandoori masala lamb chop (add on) was fire. I just thought everything was average. It was borderline too salty for my taste. This includes the kid goat keema, chicken butter masala, and venison biryani. I was expecting more flavor from the biryani honestly. The saag makai and dal were much more palatable. I would approach with caution but you're probably visiting, want Indian food, and they have Michelin stars, so you can't help yourself. I get it. Solid place but you'll find me there for a cocktail and for lunch off the à la carte menu.

The naans surprised me, they were also really good even on their own which really makes the difference in enjoying the whole meal. I feel like all my friends who've been to London have come back talking about this place, and I'm happy to join their ranks. Dishoom was also one of a handful of dining options recommended by my hotel concierge for a party of 11, including kids. Booking was easy, via SevenRooms, no phone calls or emails necessary. It's a large restaurant, and part of a popular chain--I guess they have things figured out. The space was great, open and casual, exposed ceilings and eclectic decor. Lots of fans, which my three-year-old appreciated. Service was friendly and attentive. I started my lunch with a drink, a refreshing green India Gimlet, gin and Rose's lime with celery bitters and fresh dill. I also tried and liked a sip of the New Permit Room Old-Fashioned, a slightly sweet cocktail with coconut-washed bourbon, Pedo Ximénez sherry, and Medjool date liqueur. There was only one menu available for a party of our size, a pre-set family-style group feast for eight adults, to which we added a pre-ordered platter of lamb chops. I loved the variety of dishes that came with this meal, and every one of them was ridiculously delicious. (There was less available for the three small American children, but they loaded up on hotel breakfast and snacked on naan and colorful puffed crackers.) The first round brought trays loaded with keema pau, okra fries, and bhel, along with lime, cilantro, and sauces for serving. The keema pau was incredible, probably my favorite dish of our lunch, if in part because it was 100% new to me. It was a spicy, aromatic blend of minced lamb and peas with dill and lindi pepper, served with toasted, buttered buns to make little sliders. So much flavor, it almost explained, by itself, why the British could never leave India alone. The okra fries were warm and crispy, and I loved the bhel, a crunchy snack of puffed rice, peanuts, and Bombay Mix tossed with pomegranate, tomato, onion, lime, tamarind, and mint. The main course was another giant spread: chicken ruby, house black daal, awadhi jackfruit biryani, and chilled broccoli salad, plus our charred lamb chops, with sides of roti, naan, and raita. The chicken ruby was the highlight here, a fragrant, comforting curry with tender chicken in a buttery makhani sauce. The house black daal is a Dishoom signature, and it was lovely, cooked for over 24 hours. The biryani was fluffy and nice, studded with jackfruit, barberries, and sultanas. The broccoli salad was a fresh hit of green, enhanced with pistachio, mint, red chillies, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, dates, and lime. The lamb chops made for a hearty entrée with a lot of flavor, the lamb marinated, grilled, and finished with Kashmiri chilli sauce. The thin, griddled roomali roti and the fresh-baked naan were both great accompaniments, as was the minty, cucumbery raita. For dessert, we had a choice of kulfi, creamy ice pops available in mango, pistachio, or malai, the original flavor touched with caramel. All three were superb, so cold and milk, easy to throw down the hatch. This was, it turned out, an enormous feast, but everything was so delicious and well balanced that I didn't notice how much I was eating until I got up. I was still full several hours later, when we went to dinner. If you want to eat Indian food in London, you should definitely find your nearest Dishoom. I love Indian food, and Metro Vancouver has a huge Indian population, so Indian food is comfort food. The restaurant's wall was decorated with various historical photographs, and right above our table was a photo of Vancouver, titled "Well-dressed Sikhs walking along the street in Vancouver, Canada c. 1908." Although over 100 years ago, I immediately recognized the location -- the corner of Granville and Hastings. How coincidental is that, to be thousands of miles away from home in a different continent, and to come across a photograph of the very street corner I cross multiple times a week! I don't recall what my husband had (a chicken dish), but I had Acharri Murgha ("chicken curry cooked in a traditional pickling spice mix") and it was delicious! Both my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal -- it was a taste of home! I also had a couple of glasses of wine, but each glass was 250ml, so I was pretty tipsy. In the washroom, a woman, another tourist, started conversing with me, but she only spoke French, and despite being drunk and rarely speaking French, I was able to have a semi-coherent conversation (she was also a bit tipsy). I had a drunken conversation in French inside an Indian restaurant in England! Anyway, Punjab Restaurant is one of the best Indian restaurants I have been to, and it is no surprise that it has been around since 1946. [Yelp collections: Europe 2024; London, England]
