Oh my, believe the hype. This is one of the best Indian food I've enjoyed. There's is a bit of a wait, though it's well worth it. The restaurant is quiet large so the line can move decently. I wish I had taken more pictures so I could reminisce on this meal when I am not able to enjoy it in person. This restaurant was recommended to me by someone who comes here whenever they're in London and it did not disappoint. There is indoor and outdoor seating, and the restaurant is very busy/popular. I decided to have lunch on my own and there was about a 15 minute wait. All of the staff I interacted with were very kind, and the inside of the restaurant is dimly lit so it sets a cool and intimate vibe. It's a very vibrant atmosphere. The menu had so many delicious options to choose from. I went with the vegetable samosas to start and a fresh nimbu soda which was very refreshing. For my main dish I had the chicken ruby and a said of garlic naan. Everything was so incredibly fresh. The food was served as soon as it was done being prepared and the flavors were immaculate!!!! 10 out of 10! No notes! And I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking. Came at around 4pm on weekday, no wait. They brought me inside to a table as a solo diner but it was actually so hot, felt like they haven't turned on the AC. The outside temperature was even cooler. Eventually it got better. I ordered a chef special lamb curry that comes with paratha, it was tbh a bit salty even eating with the paratha. It was good but nothing mind blowing. Some people said it's the best Indian food in London but I think it tastes like every other high rating Indian restaurant in the area. Dishoom literally never fails to disappoint. My first experience was at Convent Garden location and the Carnaby location was just as amazing! We managed to snag a reservation here before coming to London on a Saturday around 6:30 PM. We got there right on time and and our table was ready immediately. We had great booth in the back of the restaurant so it wasn't too loud. We all ordered some drinks when we sat down and opted for a Kingfisher to drink. For appetizers, we got some samosas and chili chicken which were delicious! They also gave us some of these rice crackers with different sauces which were delicious. For our entrees, we got some biryani, ruby chicken and rice, malai chicken, the gunpowder potatoes and 3 orders of naan! It was all delicious! The biryani with the yogurt sauce is my personal favorite but their garlic naan is great too. For dessert, we got the chocolate cake and I opted for the chai to end the meal which was delicious! Worth the hype! I've heard a lot about Dishoom and was curious if the food would live up to the hype...and the answer is YES, YES IT DOES. The food is so good and so flavorful! They almost seated us at a table with sofas (living room style) but we asked to move to a table and they were able to accommodate. If my memory serves, I think we ordered the carnaby special, house black daal, chicken ruby, and chili chicken. I can't remember why the waffle style chips were called (or if it was complimentary) but those were really good! A fun way to try out all the different sauces. This was my second time eating at Dishoom, and while I enjoyed it the first time, this time was even better because we weren't as jetlagged this time around. But definitely make a reservation because it's a popular spot amongst all of their locations and it fills up quick. We got The dishoom margarita - you'll like this if you like really sweet drinks! And the spice on the side also gives it a good kick. Kingfisher - this was such a clean mild beer, like I can see this being a good way to get into beers if you don't like them Basmati rice - pretty standard rice, but make sure you know which dishes come with what because you probably will need to order rice on the side. Naan - the garlic naan is obviously more flavorful and delicious than the plain. But when paired with all of the flavorful food, you can't really tell as much so honestly I would probably just get the plain next time to save some money. Chote papad with mango chutney - the mango chutney is really good! The sweetness and spiciness is balanced really well, and it's served with a crispy chip like papad. Methi gosht and paratha (1/2 plate, Chef's Carnaby Special) - I might prefer the paratha over the naan! It has more of a chewy texture to it. The curry had a little bit of a kick but was also pretty sweet. We definitely could have gone for a full plate though. And I really liked the cucumbers and onions, it was super refreshing and clean amongst all the strong flavors at the table. Dishoom chicken tikka - this was one of my favorites purely because it was more my level of spice. Where so far everything else just had a kick, this gave a little more of a burn - enough to make your nose run a little but not enough to make your tongue suffer. Gunpowder potatoes - really good potatoes, but also pretty standard potatoes. The lemon and white sauce are so so good in making them lighter and I wish they gave more white sauce. Because it could do with being even lighter. With all the curries and naans and rice, idk that having potatoes on the side is my favorite. While they're good, everything just feels really heavy, and I'd rather just get something more refreshing. Chicken ruby - I feel like this is the dish that everyone really gets. And I can see why! Super creamy, sweet, and flavorful, it's kind of similar to butter chicken. The food comes out pretty quickly and the workers are so friendly. I feel like I've thought about Dishoom at least once a day ever since trying it during my most recent trip to London. This is a rite of passage for tourists and there are multiple locations across London to check out so you have many opportunities to try it! We waited about ~30 minutes and another group waiting in line said it was "worth the wait" and they weren't wrong. There were only 2 of us and we feasted like queens. You must get the okra fries, chili cheese toast, ruby chicken (this is THE dish), and chili broccoli salad. If you have room for dessert, I highly recommend the kulfi which is pretty much like ice cream but in a popsicle. We also had the methi gosht and paratha along with the gunpowder potatoes, but that isn't anything to write home about. The service was friendly and efficient. The actual restaurant itself has darker/dimmed lighting inside and I felt like we had to use our flash to look at the menus (or maybe our eyes are just that old). Overall, it was an amazing experience and I would recommend coming here at least once during your trip to London. IYKYK, Indian food in the UK is a must! It was so hard to decide where but my friends and the internet recommended we try Dishoom. Oh my gosh this place is so dang good! Reservations are a must because this is one of the most popular places to get Indian cuisine in London. We arrived before our reservations and sat at the bar. Once our table was ready, we were seated. The restaurant is quite massive. The bar is reminiscent of a typical pub--dark, cozy, old school. As you walk into the dining side it's bright, lots of plants and art, and mismatched tables and chairs for ranging party sizes. Service is fantastic, all of our waitresses are kind, accommodating, and fun to chat to. Everyone who helped us were efficient. We shared family style, ordering the Chef's Caranby Special, Makmali Paneer, Chicken Ruby, House Black Daal, Garlic Naan, and Basmati Rice. Hands down, my favorite curry was the black daal. It is so freaking addicting--creamy, rich, and delicious. The other curries were superb with a hint of spice, plenty of seasoning, and decent meat portions. Our starches were all great accompaniments. For dessert, they had some of the Coconutty Fruit Crumble. I took a bite and the crumble was good--sweet, coconutty, and filled with fruit. I decided to order a House Chai with Oat Milk. It was one of the best chais and a mixture of all the goodness--sweet, spicy, bold, and creamy. Dishoom is a well loved restaurant chain in England. Their Caranby location is off Kingly, which is a walking only path. Make reservations in advance! By the time we left there were at least 40 people waiting outside because it's that good. Dishoom was definitely one of the most recommended restaurants for us to try when we were in London for our first time, and I'm glad to say that it did not disappoint! We made a reservation for lunch at this location (Carnaby) on a Monday and it wasn't too busy at all when we arrived. The interior is a bit dark but part of the main dining area does open up to a bright and well-lit section which was nice during the daytime. We started with the okra fries and pau bhaji, both of which were super flavorful! For the pau bhaji, the combo of the somewhat spicy mashed vegetables with the buttery buns was an absolute delight. Then for the main courses, my fiance and I shared the black daal and the methi gosht with paratha (which is the cafe special at the Carnaby location). We were super glad to have made a reservation for an early Tuesday dinner. 30 mins after we were seated at 5:30PM, the whole place was packed and a queue had begun forming outside in the street. The restaurant is comfortable but feels small and cosy. We had a super friendly server who offered a great tour of the menu, and gave us some advice on how to order for 2 people. Well, the choices were excellent, but we did end up with wayyyyy too much food, so be careful overestimating your appetites! To kick things off, the Chota Papad was a fun, 3D-take on the poppadom, and came with great chutneys. We enjoyed the Carnaby Chef's Special, Methi Gosht with paratha; super tender lamb and great warmth. It's offered in a half-portion if needed. However, the top dish for us was the Chicken Ruby. To this homecoming Brit, it felt like a "proper" curry and had a lovely nostalgia of high street Indian restaurants of the 90s. We were talked into adding a small plate, and really loved the Fish Amritsari - but this, plus a roti, took the volume of food over the top for us, so we were sad to walk away from the leftovers. Next time, I'd stick with one entree, one small plate and the magical hexagonal poppadom bites. Sometimes the lines get long but it moves fast. Their house chai is an absolute must and it is bottomless! They have the recipe right at the entrance. My mom and I typically always order the same things whenever we go to Indian restaurants: chicken tikka masala, naan, and basmati rice. The goan monkfish curry was delicious, but had such a nice sour cream taste to it, it was addicting. The chicken ruby was not as heavy as a tikka masala but had plenty of spice. And the chai I had was honestly, perfect for my tastes. For dessert, we had the Kala Khatta Nice Cream, which is interesting. It was really like eating a raspberry creamsicle with salt sprinkled on top. Even the menu warns you the taste might be weird at first, but you'll be hooked. With all of these niceties being said, I will say, the food was good but there is another restaurant in my heart that takes the place of best Indian food in the UK. I had high expectations, and the staff were all lovely as was the decor, but I was just very underwhelmed with the food (especially at the price point). We didn't have reservations and queued for about an hour on Saturday night, which is to be expected for someplace so popular and didn't damper our experience. The interior rooms are dimly lit and I really liked the ambience. The cocktails were also great with interesting, subtle twists on traditional favorites. I had the espresso martini and my boyfriend had the margarita. Both were great and we were looking forward to our meal. While nothing was bad, nothing was great either. The butterflied prawns were flavorful, but overly cooked and overpriced for only four medium-sized prawns. The Ruby Chicken and chicken and mango salad were our favorites from what we ordered, but while tasty, I wouldn't go out of my way for either. We ordered a side of garlic naan to sop up the sauce and it came out room temp/cooled and didn't even taste garlicky. After getting many recommendations on Dishoom, we had to make it work. And so for our one week trip to London, I looked at all of the Dishooms in Central London for reservations and the latest one I could get was 4:30 PM on a Friday, (everything else was booked) and so, that's what we did. We ate scantily all day awaiting our early dinner at Dishoom -- and it delivered. Having tried Indian in London before, I knew it was some of the best... but Dishoom went beyond. With four of us, we ordered a lot. By far the best dish was their signature Black Daal. It was buttery and smooth, and it melts in your mouth. I could had eaten the whole thing myself. (In fact, I swiped the last few bites despite my full belly!) The next best thing? Probably the New Keema Pau, which was this ground lamb with fluffy toasted buns. Delicious. And the next best thing? The Monkfish Curry. The fish was perfectly cooked -- and we kept eating the curry even after the fish pieces were all snatched up. We also had the chicken tikka, okra fries, gunpowder potatoes, mattar paneer, grilled greens, and the warm aubergine chutney. All were great as well, although the aubergine chutney was a little intense. But it was still interesting to try. Even though we ate at 4:30 PM, we feasted and stayed full well into the evening. I will definitely come back upon future returns to London. Perhaps I'll make rezies ahead of time so we don't have to eat so early (but honestly, I'm getting old and eating at 4:30 isn't actually that far off :P) Go eat there.
