After getting many recommendations on Dishoom, we had to make it work. And so for our one week trip to London, I looked at all of the Dishooms in Central London for reservations and the latest one I could get was 4:30 PM on a Friday, (everything else was booked) and so, that's what we did. We ate scantily all day awaiting our early dinner at Dishoom -- and it delivered. Having tried Indian in London before, I knew it was some of the best... but Dishoom went beyond. With four of us, we ordered a lot. By far the best dish was their signature Black Daal. It was buttery and smooth, and it melts in your mouth. I could had eaten the whole thing myself. (In fact, I swiped the last few bites despite my full belly!) The next best thing? Probably the New Keema Pau, which was this ground lamb with fluffy toasted buns. Delicious. And the next best thing? The Monkfish Curry. The fish was perfectly cooked -- and we kept eating the curry even after the fish pieces were all snatched up. We also had the chicken tikka, okra fries, gunpowder potatoes, mattar paneer, grilled greens, and the warm aubergine chutney. All were great as well, although the aubergine chutney was a little intense. But it was still interesting to try. Even though we ate at 4:30 PM, we feasted and stayed full well into the evening. I will definitely come back upon future returns to London. Perhaps I'll make rezies ahead of time so we don't have to eat so early (but honestly, I'm getting old and eating at 4:30 isn't actually that far off :P) Go eat there. Don't worry about what time it is. Anytime is a good time for Dishoom! read more

I arrived at 11:40 and was told there was no server for the outside area until 12:15. Could I get on a wait list, I asked. No need. So we walked around Carnaby Street and returned at 12:09 to find all the outside tables were taken. I saw a table open up and was told that it was too small for our party. I went back again and told the hostess we'd make it work, and by then I think my pestering had worn her down and we got a table. Yay! This shouldn't have happened in the first place but yay! Otherwise we would have been waiting around an hour and this might have messed up our plans (we had tickets) for later in the day. We got our perennial favorite, Gunpowder Potatoes, as well as my husband's new fave, a lamb dish (though I can't remember the name now). We also tried the Channa Salad and the Ruby Chicken. The latter included only about 5 not large pieces of chicken, so a little skimpy for the price. And as always I delighted in their Chocolate Chai (the best anywhere) and had another Chocolate Chili Pudding, even though I'd had one a week earlier, because I loved it so much. read more

Absolutely fab. butter chicken is unreal and everything is just so tasty. get the chai!

This place gets busy but the line moves fast when there's a wait. Service was friendly, helpful with suggestions and our food came out fairly quick. Everything was hot and flavorful, some of the best Indian food I've had. Because it's so busy it is crowded and noisy, so not the place if you're looking for a quiet dinner, not obnoxious but very lively. Highly recommend and would visit again. read more

We stayed in London 4 nights and every time we wanted to eat here it was too busy with a line out the door with people waiting to get in. Last day we were in London, we went at 2pm and no lines! Meal was good and had nice service. read more

Unbelievable. Some of the best Indian food I have ever had and I was very concerned about the Q and not being able to make reservations coming from New York where I make reservations for everything, but it was a super simple process. The staff was so friendly they handed out warm drinks while we were waiting in the cold and then you get sent to the bar once you're able to get inside the drink options included chai, fresh mint tea, or sherry And they said it was going to be about an hour wait and I think in total we waited about 25 minutes and had a great conversation with the line manager. Now onto the food, the lamb Samosa and chef special with lamb absolutely stole the show. They were incredible. I also loved the chicken biryani and the vegetable samosas and of course the garlic naan was delicious where the restrooms are when you go downstairs separated is the kitchen and you can see them making the fresh on and it looks incredible . The Dehue chicken tikka was also delicious but something that I didn't realize is that there wouldn't be sauce with that just something to keep in mind, but it was incredible and super flavorful. I feel like the Soho Carnaby location has slightly less of a vibe compared to the others, but it was still incredible inside beautifully decorated. The drinks were delicious and the staff was phenomenal. read more

I love this place so much I went twice in three days! It gets a long line so prepare to wait or arrive early. The staff does a great job of getting people in and sat they even serve drinks in line while you wait. Chicken Kathi Roll is a must as is the chicken Ruby. Everything on their menu is so flavorful it will literally leave you coming back for more. read more

So this place is definitely a tourist spot, but they do it well with the ambience, low lit lighting, and food. I like the touch with offering warm chai or sherry the people waiting on line. It shows that they are appreciative of your patronage. The food is honed down to a well executed formula especially with the daal. I don't know if I've had better black daal before. One star off--What lacks however is the 2 hour seating limit rule. I understand that diners shouldn't linger. However, on busy nights where you can't find your server to order some more dishes (mainly dessert at end of meal), it leaves a sour taste in my mouth because you're basically kicked out despite wanting to order dessert and being refused because you literally just made it 2 minutes short of the two hour limit! read more

We've stopped in several times & tonight we took a couple of first timers, before the rush. We were asked the standard "have you ever been here?" & for the first time ever, received zero response from the staff when we noted we had first timers... she just turned & walked away - no welcome, no get bent, nothing. We explained how it works & eventually ordered. Our food was great but I don't think the service won over this couple as repeats. It's lousy, as staff are usually amazing at giving the run down & tips when we bring in someone new. Total was $145/ 4 with bar drinks read more

If you're in London you definitely have to make a pit stop for Indian food. As for Dishoom, this place definitely checks that box of semi-upscale good Indian food, but honestly nothing that would truly blow your mind compared to some mom and pop shops you may be able to find in other areas. The environment definitely gives tourist friendly and the interior is elaborately designed, however I feel like the portion sizes are definitely lacking and with prices being a bit higher than your conventional Indian spot makes this place slightly underwhelming. Food is still decently good but I feel like you should be able to find a better deal. read more

Ah. Loved Dishoom Covent Garden and booked a reservation at this location since that was full. We were seated near the front. It's missing the dim, sort of charm that the Covent Garden location has. Not sure if my memory of Dishoom failed me, but I found the food quite underwhelming and the vegetarian options so slim. I asked the waiter for a main entree recommendation to pair with the veggie biryani and he recommended potatoes. Was an odd rec in my opinion and I last minute remembered the daal and ordered that. Sad, but may have to leave my memory of Dishoom behind. read more

My son has lived in Edinburgh for the past 3 years and when we visit him there, we always make a reservation at Dishoom for a special family dinner. It is consistently the best food and atosphere of any restaurant in Edinburgh. So, when we met up with our son and his gf in London this summer, we booked a reservation at Dishoom Carnaby. We booked an early dinner reservation before before going to see Moulin Rouge nearby at the Piccadilly. Not surprisingly, Dishoom Carnaby met all of our big expectations after our numerous meals at the Edinburgh outpost. We enjoyed the casual environment of this Dishoom and loved where we were seated, in a back area with a glass ceiling and overstuffed wooden couches nearby. It was 4 in the afternoon, so the afternoon light made for a nice, casual atmosphere. The black daal is magic. I don't know what they do to it, but holy cow, it's just the best thing on the menu! The chcken tikka was moist and perfectly seasoned. We fought over the gunpowder potatoes and raita! And the jackfruit biryani was new for us and very yummy. Dishoom is also all about the drinks! I started with a Sunny's star martini and ended the meal with a naughty chocolate chai. After the amazing service that is typical of Dishoom, the wonderful dinner, the perfect atmosphere in a gorgeous pedestrian neighborhood, and the naughty chai, we all rolled out of there in perfect form for an evening of Moulin Rouge. Best night of our entire London trip! Once again, thank you Dishoom! read more

Was beyond excited to try Dishoom, as it was my first time in London and I knew Indian was ironically enough one of the best represented cuisines in the UK. I'd been recommended Dishoom, and I came prepared to try all the signature dishes and drinks. The curries were honestly nothing special. It obviously wasn't bad, but I felt it was too salty most of the time, and the small serving sizes and the lack of sufficient complimentary naan/rice for the price were off-putting. The chicken ruby in particular felt overrated. One thing that isn't is the black dahl, as I am a lentil lover and I can easily eat multiple orders of that dish myself. Cocktails, lassis, and the ambiance were all 10/10, however. Great experience overall, but the food just didn't reach my expectations by a tiny bit. read more

Service: amazing service very kind and patient. My father said a racist joke and they still were kind. The service here is honestly kind of slow it took them quickly to take 1 thing out but than didn't come back for like half an hour kind of disappointing, but hey they were pretty packed. Food: I ordered the lamb chops and the spicy curry with garlic bread. I really loved the curry and the bread. It was an amazing two things to put together. The curry was supposed to be spicy, but it wasn't that spicy, but it worked well. The bread probably helped with the spice though and my drink. My father enjoyed the Trini chicken and the chili chicken. It was really nice and he enjoyed the true essence of Bombay spicy food. My sister ordered the lamb chops. She thought they were kind of charcoal tasting, and the chicken tikka had a bit of spice if you're not looking for any spice, don't get it. My brothers food was chicken and it was not distinguished on the menu as spicy. He was caught off guard by the amount of spice contained in it although it was Indian food just beware of that. He had to gargle down four water bottles. The sides of rice were very nice and he was glad they added a lemon to deal with the spice. Just caught him off guard a little bit. I thought that the bathrooms required me to go past the kitchen, which delighted me because I got to see the inside of the restaurant industry, which was very entertaining and busy. There was a long wait, but the staff provided drinks outside and allowed me to order some snacks at the bar Which delighted me. The lamb chops were cooked deliciously and had a little bit of spice in addition to the provided sauces, which delighted me. And finally, the soup that I ordered was not delicious. However, the rest of the meal made up for it. Fantastic. And I must applaud the restaurant for using Florida Keyna a wonderful choice of rum. It delighted me. Overall a delight time and experience with the family and a great meal, I recommend the experience if you like Indian food or want something different. read more

Dishoom Soho is undeniably beautiful. The décor is rich with vintage Bombay charm, the ambiance thoughtfully designed, and the service warm and attentive. But beneath the surface, the food falls flat--and for a restaurant that's constantly hyped as one of the best Indian dining experiences in London, that's a problem. I ordered the Wrestler's Naan Roll--a naan breakfast sandwich with a side of baked beans and mushrooms. It looked promising but tasted like something my non-desi friends might have proudly whipped up after a deep dive into Chef Sanjeev Kapoor's YouTube channel. Chef Sanjeev, to be clear, deserves better. The baked beans tasted straight out of a discount tin--one-dimensional and overly sweet. I'd be happy to pass along my mother's recipe: a touch of garam masala and a splash of Worcestershire sauce can transform a humble dish into something memorable. Sadly, that kind of nuance was nowhere to be found. The chai? It was fine. Comforting, but unremarkable. If Dishoom is serious about delivering a standout experience, even small touches--like offering maple syrup instead of sugar--could elevate the tea beyond the ordinary. Ultimately, the food lacks depth and complexity. Dishoom feels more focused on maintaining margins than culinary magic. Perhaps it once earned its acclaim, but those days seem long gone. London truly does have some of the best Indian food in the world--but you won't find it here. Skip the photo op and seek out something real. read more

Make a reservation and just go for a bit of an early dinner, best way to avoid the lines. That said, it's so worth whatever that wait is. Having been to other Dishooms, this one feels the same, the menu's consistent, it's great. I love their Keema pau to start and then have to get a chicken ruby. Can pair that chicken ruby with a grilled item or two or some daal. The one thing Dishoom doesn't really do perfectly is cocktails. They're fine but I've never been overly excited about the cocktails. But who needs 'em, spend the time eating food not drinking! read more

Popped over at 6pm on a Saturday as a party of 1. There was already a line forming but it wasn't bad at all! We were given a complimentary glass of hot chai tea while we waited (nice touch). Once you get inside, you're given a buzzer and encouraged to get a drink at the bar. I'm not a big drinker but they had a lot of unique cocktails so why not! The bartender was very nice and helpful and I was seated within 10 minutes of hanging at the bar -- nice! It was unfortunate I was alone bc I wanted to try many dishes but had to be mindful. Very hungry, I ordered the lamb samosas as a starter, and the chicken ruby with plain naan. My waiter was great and he mentioned that this restaurant concept incorporates Iranian influences. I thought that was cool being from LA (big population in Orange County) and thought perhaps that's why a lot of my favorite Indian dishes were not on the menu (such as saag paneer and saag alloo). Given my limited experience of the menu, I just thought it was okay. The samosas were pretty thin philo dough w/ ground lamb that tasted more like beef. The chicken ruby was nice but didn't stand out to me (basically tikka masala if you had to compare). The naan, although I saw it being made in house downstairs, was also nothing to write home about and dry flavorless (no butter or whatever others were mentioning on their reviewed). I'm grateful to have the experience, and would for sure come again, but will make sure I dine with others so I can try a variety of dishes and have a better formulated opinion. Service was great and atmosphere hip and trendy, but not pretentious. PS - was told they're opening in NYC read more

What a treat! Surely one of my favorite London experiences ever. The curry and the naan was a standout. What an amazing meal! I love good Indian food and their take on Indian dishes was just great. The black dal was the favorite and the chicken ruby was second favorite. This was the second Dishoom I've ever been too and while it has the same vibe as the other, it's quite unique at the same time. I purposefully scheduled a 16hr layover in London just so I could come into the city and enjoy this food. I ordered the lamb vindaloo spicy and was sweating pure happiness the whole time. The waitress saw me fighting delicious demons and kept my cup filled. She recommended the mango kulfi and I couldn't think of a better way to end the meal. I will be back. read more

Everyone knows about Dishoom. If you're visiting London on travel or asking the locals for food recommendations after relocating you are definitely going to hear about thiis upmarket chain more than any other restaurant. And, it's for good reason: Indian and Indian-adjacent food is to the Brits what Mexican food is to Los Angelinos, and unlike most other recs in this category Dishoom is likely to please your senses beyond the food because the attention to the experience is top notch; you can find tastier eats than Dishoom but you'll be unlikely to find them served in a space like this until you rank up to the likes of Gymkhana. The first thing you're going to hear about in regards to this instituion are the lines and how to avoid them. It's best to take note of this information because it's true at all of their locations: show up for breakfast or lunch and you're likely to walk right in but make the mistake of arriving at 6PM and you'll be in for a long wait. This seems part of the branding and you'd think they could have sorted out this issue after opening a bunch of locations in the city but it is what it is. There are plenty of good things on the menu but I'm going to be boring and just recommend the same things everyone else does: Black Dahl (a savoury lentil based soup that has deceptively deep flavor) and the Ruby Chicken which will serve your butter/tikka masala needs quite well. Cocktails here are also on point so get adventurous and try some interesting ones! This is a rare occasion where I'm going to agree with the locals: Dishoom is good and worth a visit! read more

I bought into the hype of this place. We decided to come here for dinner. We were told the wait would be 30 to 40 minutes and ended up waiting about 55 min. I felt like they tell you a lower time and so you become committed to eating here if it exceeded their estimates. Many people were angry bc they had waited a long time. When we finally got seated, we quickly ordered bc we were hungry. We got this red chicken that was okay. The main dishes don't come with any rice, roti or naan. You have to order this separately. We also got the tandoori chicken which was dry and a little burnt. The okra fries were okay. Nothing remarkable. Service was okay. We didn't get a second refill of water. Ambiance is nice. read more

Food was delicious, but we were surprised by how many items were spicy when it was not designated as spicy. We had also asked the server and he said not spicy. We had two kids with us, 10 and 13, and they both found it to be too spicy. My 10 year old doesn't eat spicy but my 13 year old eats kimchi and Korean tofu soup at medium spiciness so I was surprised that he couldn't tolerate the spice. We ordered the Chote Papad, Ruby Chicken, Gunpowder potatoes, Black Dahl, Chicken Berry Britannia and garlic naan. Everything had a little kick to it except the garlic naan and ruby chicken. The adults loved the food, but I wish we had know it was so spicy so we could have ordered more non spicy items for the kids. It's definitely more of an adult restaurant given how flavorful the food is. read more

Nearly 14 years ago, Dishoom changed the culinary landscape in London in regards to Indian food. Their combination of traditional homestyle cooking mixed with a vibrant yet retro décor plus expertly crafted cocktails proved to be a winning recipe that now has made them a staple throughout the country. Naturally, we had to order a smorgasbord to sample a little bit of everything. For Small Plates, we started with their signature Okra Fries in addition to Lamb Samosas and the Chili Chicken. I've never been a big okra fan but that all changed with one bite. Crispy, spicy, crunchy, savory - everything you could ask for in a single bite. Easily the star of the appetizers. For the Main Courses, we ordered the Murgh Malai, Chicken Ruby and the Chef's Special Salli Boti. The Murgh Malai was some of the most tender and flavorful chicken thighs I've ever had in my life. They weren't kidding when they said they marinate it overnight in garlic, ginger, coriander and cream. Couldn't get enough so we ordered a second portion. The Chicken Ruby is as similar to a Butter Chicken as they offer which makes it incredibly popular and rightfully so - it was quite delicious. Salli Boti is their take on a Parsi classic. Braised lamb in a rich and flavorful sauce served with buttered Roomali Roti. It's cliché to recommend the Chef's Special, but it's worth it. Last but not least - dessert. How could I not order the Basmati Kheer (rice pudding). Silky smooth caramelized basmati rice pudding cooked in a vanilla infused coconut milk topped with a blueberry compote. The perfect way to end the meal along with some tea, of course. read more

You first have to wait in line outside. The hostess was really nice. We were offered a small cup of chai while waiting. We waited about 30-45 minutes and then they told us that we were able to wait inside and order drinks at the bar if we'd like. Upon going inside, they will give you a buzzer. An hour has passed and I noticed a few parties that arrived after us, have gotten seated already. So I went to ask the hostess when was our table going to be ready. Well guess what? They have forgotten about us and apologized and said they would give us the next available table... Overall I think we waited about 2 hours to be seated. (Outside & inside total) Food was definitely NOT worth the wait! I had high expectations for this restaurant due to so many great reviews and the popularity of this place. Unfortunately, food was just ok to say the least. Not one item stood out. Maybe we didn't order the right items but we've had better Indian food back at our local Indian restaurants at home. We got somosas and okra fries for appetizers, chicken berry britannia, chicken ruby, masala prawns, daal, and of course can't forget about the naan. Food was mediocre and did not live up to the hype. read more
