If you've never been to London and you like Indian food, you can't miss dishoom. It's just always going to be good. Going with more people means more dishes, or order a little extra since it makes for great leftovers. 2 people, dine in, June 2024. This was enough for some leftovers Vegetable samosas (3pc) - 8/10 Chili broccoli salad (half) - 7.5/10 Paneer roti - 8/10 Chicken ruby - 9/10 Black dahl - 10/10 Jasmine rice - 7/10 Plain naan - 6/10 The vegetable samosas were a nice starter and came out almost immediately. Filled with spiced peas, carrot, potatoes and a perfectly fried outside. The sauce was a little too sweet. These were good though I'd be open to trying something else next time. They also came out almost immediately. The rest came out all together. The paneer roti was fantastic. Lots of flavor with soft paneer. A little heat but not bad. It comes cut in half, which we then cut again, eat ate 1/4 and saved the second half for leftovers. I loved this with both the green and spicier red sauce. The chicken ruby is just down right delicious. The sauce isn't as creamy as what you'd get in the US and the flavor is a bit deeper/more developed. The chicken is also cooked perfectly. You could easily order this dish with rice as a single person for one very good meal. The black Dahl I could eat every day. I love the texture, the mild spice, and warmth this dish brings on a rainy London evening. It's pure comfort in a bowl. I've been to dishoom twice and both times I've gotten this dish. The broccoli salad is just okay but it's nice to have something fresh, raw, green, and crunchy. I like it. There isn't an overwhelming flavor but it's a nice addition to the heavier items. I prefer the jasmine rice as I wasn't impressed with the garlic naan last time. However, with multiple dishes, 1 bowl of rice isn't enough to eat with leftovers so we got the plain naan to go. I was here last week and been to this place a few times before. Highly recommend reservation or be ready to wait for 1-2 hours. The spicy prawns on app menu and chicken roomali roti are my fav. We had a fabulous dinner here with the seven of us. Our waiter did a fabulous job of recommending a variety of dishes, and they were all really delicious. Favorites were definitely the black daal, the ruby chicken for the kids, and the specialty lamb. Even if you don't like daal, I would definitely try this black daal. It was unlike any other I've ever had. The lamb was stellar and the Ruby chicken was very much like a chicken tikka masala. This is a great place to try interesting things and some old standbys. We waited about 30-45 minutes and then they told us that we were able to wait inside and order drinks at the bar if we'd like. Upon going inside, they will give you a buzzer. An hour has passed and I noticed a few parties that arrived after us, have gotten seated already. So I went to ask the hostess when was our table going to be ready. Well guess what? They have forgotten about us and apologized and said they would give us the next available table... Overall I think we waited about 2 hours to be seated. (Outside & inside total) Food was definitely NOT worth the wait! I had high expectations for this restaurant due to so many great reviews and the popularity of this place. And if you're like me, you will soon realize that locals don't really use Yelp there. I had reservations for one (glad I did) and was able to eat around 5:30. Service was great, as were the drinks and the food. Everything is very streamlined here. Even the cocktails are pre-portioned and pre-made for the most part. You can order something from the menu and it will come out pretty quickly. The kitchen (which you can see on your way to the restrooms) looked very efficient as well. I ordered the cheese naan (a must!), samosas, the black lentils, and the ruby chicken. I will say I was pleasantly surprised by a few things: 1. The accessibility: 30ish minute wait at prime lunch time, and we were able to sit at the bar and have a drink beforehand. 2. The drinks: I had a phenomenal espresso martini and my friend also raved about her old fashioned 3. The vibe: it comes across like a borderline theme restaurant but in a very tasteful, not tacky way. Now onto the food. I'll sum it up by saying that it was unequivocally above average, but I've had better Indian food at the same price point or cheaper without having to seek it out. We ordered: 1. Their breakfast though, THAT is well worth the price and quite yummy. But again, if there's a line for more than 30 min, I'd probably think twice. Some perks though: 1. Dishoom is a very nice upper-end Indian restaurant for those who crave flavorful food. We ended up showing up without reservations with a group of 7 and found a table within 20 minutes near Christmas time! We also let the waiter know that it was my mom's birthday and they had great dessert options to celebrate. The wait staff was very competent and accommodating as well. They made great recommendations based on our dietary restrictions that day and were very careful with cross-contamination information. We ordered Vada Pav, mocktails, and 2 vegetarian curries. The size of the dishes were a little small but were flavored well. I'd definitely come back again! We arrived in London with Dishoom on our list of places where we wanted to eat. Living in the Bay Area and NYC, both of which have sizable Indian populations and/or access to what are considered "good" Indian restaurants in the U.S., we enjoy Indian food (from the various regions of the country) and were excited to be able to compare Dishoom to other places we've eaten. We were pleasantly blown away. We ordered the okra fries, chilli broccoli salad, chilli butter-bhutta, prawn koliwada, garlic naan, basmati rice, and chicken ruby. All the dishes were a 10 out of 10, and there was so much more on the menu that we wanted to try! For newcomers (like us), I strongly suggest making a reservation (which for groups of less than 6 people, I think you can only make for times prior to 5:45pm), or better yet, coming with a large group of friends (so you can make a reservation even after 5:45pm and so you can try as many dishes as possible!) I make this suggestion because every day we passed by Dishoom (St. Martin's location) and the line after 6:00pm was such that people were waiting for more than an hour for tables. That being said, as an Indian I have to say it's not the most mind blowing food and it gets overhyped mostly by non Indians. BUT no doubt about it the service, ambience and food make for a very enjoyable experience and the menu is quite varied and interesting. We wanted to opt-in for their All-Day menu but was told that it doesn't start until noon. We killed time by walking around the city. When we came back, the hostess told us there was a 45 min wait. We did not mind waiting as we thought the wait will be well worth it. We sat by the bar and the gentlemen running the show were very friendly and welcoming! Ambiance (5/5): The ambiance is very lively! It is also extremely spacious inside and we felt very comfortable during our visit. Service (3/5): Our server was kind at first but once we placed our order she was no where to be found. She checked up on all the surrounding tables multiple times but not once did she stop by our table. It makes me wonder if it's because the other tables were constantly ordering food and we were not. Additionally, I had to ask another waiter to have my water refilled as she was no where to be found... I was waiting for about 15 minutes for water! Food (4/5): Now on to the food! The vegetable samosas were my favorite-- they were crispy and full of flavor. It paired well with the chutney. The chicken tikka was underwhelming and quite frankly nothing memorable. Furthermore, the Chicken Ruby was full of flavor but there were literally three pieces of chicken inside the dish. We were very disappointed as it was obvious that they were skimping on the portion. I can tell the Ruby had a delicious curry flavor but the portion size was so small, you could barely take in the flavors. One thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the fact that you have to PAY for rice. As someone who is Iranian-American, my ancestors would be rolling in their graves knowing that a restaurant was charging almost $6 American dollars for RICE that should already be included with a stew-like dish. We all know that rice is one of the cheapest ingredients and is a staple in many cuisines across the globe. Again, this makes me wonder if the owner is trying to pocket money from tourists/locals knowing that people will feel obligated to purchase a side of rice with a curry or stew. After going to the King's Cross Dishoom earlier in my trip and loving it, I had high hopes for this location. While the food was again amazing, I had a few letdowns in this experience leading me to 3 stars: - I arrived around 11am hoping to have breakfast/brunch. I was told the wait would be around 30 mins. When I was finally seated, I was told the kitchen was changing from breakfast to lunch, so I could only order from the lunch menu now. I was offered free chai but had to wait at my table without being able to order food for another 20 mins. - This location does not offer bar seating for food, only drinks (unlike King's Cross where as a solo diner I was able to eat at the bar). So I had a whole table to myself, which was a little awkward. If you're trying to come for breakfast, come early! The kitchen closing / changeover is a pain and I'm still disappointed I couldn't try the breakfast menu. Overall a sub par experience compared to my previous Dishoom visit. read more

This place is quite popular and they only do walk in for dinner so come early or after 9p to avoid the rush. When we got there it was a 15-20 minute wait for a party of 2 and up to 50 minutes for a party of 5 from what I overheard. After getting in line a server comes around to take your name down. Then you wait until it's time to go inside and you're handed a buzzer to wait a bit longer by the bar area. They have plenty of non alcoholic cocktail options which was very nice. I went with a na mojito and was happy with it. Beers are bottled and cocktails are premixed. For dinner I got the ruby chicken (like butter chicken) with 4 pieces of chicken and a cheese naan. The ruby chicken was just slightly too spicy to my taste so I don't know about ordering this if you can't handle spicy. I asked about adjusting spice level and they can't so it seems food is also premade. The cheese naan was more green onion than cheese so I don't understand the popularity, it was just ok. My partner got chicken tikka (grilled chicken, no curry) and he was very happy with it. This dish was definitely spicier. He also got a side of marsala sauce £5. Service was fairly good with someone checking in on us frequently. Although they got our order wrong and forgot I ordered the ruby chicken. Overall it was ok. Wow, this was a great find in London! It's near the Soho Carnaby area! We had an amazing meal here! All the restaurants in the area were packed but we were able to get a table at this restaurant! We tried to eat at a different location the day before but didn't have reservations so decided to try it at a later date with reservations. Staff is super friendly and nice. I was seated within 5 minutes of getting there. The restaurant was dark and brown. So be prepared to pull out those phone lights. I was surprised with the menu, honestly. A lot of items were reference as Persian. I didn't quite get that. I ordered a beer which was served Luke warm with a warm glass. Like who does that? I ordered the paneer tikka and their house black daal. Ordered rice and a naan as well. They give you a little platter of chutneys. They all tasted interesting. The paneer was ok. The daal was creamy and rich. Naan was lathered with yummy butter. Everything tasted like something I can get elsewhere. I don't understand the hype. Dishoom is famous for good reason, it's hands down one of the best Indian Restaurants I have ever been to. The hype is worth it & a must try when your in the area. Loved this location as its Less busy I've heard then some of the others. But again, timing is everything. We made our reservation a few days in advance and chose a weekday for a late lunch. Probably the smartest time to go as a late lunch while people are working is going to get you in and out. We were told though they'd be very busy regardless for an early lunch or around dinner time so just be mindful that getting a reservation is everything. Another reason this location is prime is there is so much shopping near by it helps to kill the time if you have to wait. Service was lovely. From the hostess to our waiter everyone was so friendly and nice. The hostess took us 20 minutes early to our reservation which can be unheard of at some famous spots. Super nice and accommodating. Our waiter was adorable, he was so friendly and helpful on guiding us through the menu and ensuring we didn't over order LOL trust me our eyes were bigger then our stomachs. The interior is very cozy. Yes it's a big busy restaurant but the dim lit lighting and atmosphere does create a more intimate vibe that I was surprised about. They have outdoor patio seating in the middle of the restaurant which I thought was nice. Also super cool is when you go downstairs to the restroom that's actually also the floor where the kitchen is! Open kitchen concept it was amazing to watch all the cooks and food coming out, unexpected but very neat. The food is a solid 10/10. Life changing? I didn't think so but delicious and comforting, I would definitely come back again or recommend it as a must try for an amazing meal in town. Here's what we ordered (everything was delish): -Hot Chai drink to start 4/5, super comforting and good flavor, not too harsh with the chai flavor -Chicken Ruby: 4/5. A classic delicious creamy tomato chicken dish (comfortable to chicken tikka masala for those looking for it on the menu). The only reason for the doc of a star was there was literally only 4 small pieces of chicken in the sauce. Really surprising on the lack of protein portion in this dish. -Shrimp Masala: 5/5. Amazing charred flavor and amazing spice. A favorite dish of the afternoon. A nice balance to all of the saucy dishes. -Black Daal: 5/5. The BEST DAAL I have ever had in my life! So unexpected but highly addicting. You must include this with your order. Not too spicy but extremely flavorful and tasty. All of the sides were great as well, lovely little sauces to accompany our meal, great classic rice, and the garlic naan was another addicting side, we had two orders!
