Veeraswamy has been on my to-do list for years and each time we visited London something came up that prevented me from coming here. Not this time! We made it here before a theatre engagement and were blown away by the incredibly attentive service, amazingly kind and knowledgeable staff, and above all the mind blowing food. Expect a premium experience (and corresponding prices) here, but also expect you time here to be more than worth the cost. Begin with a 'guard' at the ground floor entrance that will guide you upstairs to the restaurant itself, which has a nice view of Regent Street down below. Their coconut chicken curry, rogan josh, and duck vindaloo were truly memorable. Plating and presentation were very elegant. The wine list here is solid, with several bottles/glasses available at reasonable prices. The only slight complaint I might have would be some of the other guests that we saw. There were some people here heavy on the expensive purses, garish jewelry, and goofy plastic surgery - I worry that people like that aren't here for a life-affirming meal but for other reasons like 'being seen' or 'because it's expensive.' This was the best Indian food I've ever had in my life. We started with wine and the papadum, which offered 3 uniquely flavorful chutneys, in addition to different shaped papadum than I have experienced before. We got the chicken makhani, spiced naan, and the lamb en croute. This was the perfect combo, with the buttery naaan the perfect vehicle to dip in the chicken makhani sauce. This was my favorite part - tender chicken thigh in a luscious sauce, amazing. The lamb was a fun presentation and the sauce reduction on the side perfectly Complemented the rich gamey lamb. My husband and I were talking about how this is one of the few fine dining experiences that is really "craveable" - most leave us impressed with having a new experience, but this food was so mouthwatering, I only wish we lived closer so we could eat here more often! read more

4/5 Very good! We had a reservation for 9pm on a Wednesday and when we got there the restaurant was still pretty full. We went here at the recommendation of a friend and when I looked until I was admittedly a little nervous because it seemed like a popular place for tourists and visitors to go. However, I do believe that some places are popular with tourists for a reason, and Veeraswamy did not disappoint. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was delicious, flavorful with good sized portions. My only critique is that I wish it was a little bit spicier for an Indian restaurant but perhaps that has something to do with how they likely cater to a lot of tourists/visitors? My favorite dish was the lamb we had. Very tender and flavorful I was slightly disappointed in the Masala Chai I had to end my meal. It was very spicy and seemed a little watery tbh. My husband and I had a fantastic dinner at Veeraswamy while in London last month! The restaurants interiors truly transport you to India and add so much to the overall dining experience. We were seated in the Verandah Room which had a great view of Swallow St. We placed an order for drinks- I had one from the seasonal cocktail menu and my husband had their gin and tonic - both were great with fresh garnishes that really added that "something extra" factor. We both started with Mulligatawny Soup- really good and also filling! I had the prawn curry that was in a tomato based sauce which I enjoyed- the spices and flavor were spot on. Service was fantastic and we had a great time! Before leaving we noticed that Veeraswamy is at risk of losing their location due to a rent/landlord issue- I hope that they are able to retain their space as it is so special! read more

The ambience is intimate and exquisite! The staff is uniformed professionally and greeted us kindly. We were late for our reservation due to horrible traffic. We called and informed them of our delay and they were accommodating! The cocktails were superb! The appetizers were delicious and well presented! What can I say about a restaurant that has been open for 99 years and has a Michelin star? There's a reason they are still open and thriving. Firstly, this place is so elegant. From the doorman welcoming you downstairs to the service as soon as you step out of the elevator. Everything is done with precision and elegance. The drinks are amazing. And the food...the flavors are unlike anything I've had in Indian food. The chicken momos were excellent! The lamb biryani was perfect. The lamb curry was some of the tastiest lamb I've ever had. And the Vindaloo sauce that came with the duck was divine. It can get very expensive when ordering drinks, appetizers, and entrees but it is 100% worth it! Especially when celebrating a special occasion (my husband and I went on our honeymoon). It will forever be one of the most memorable meals we've ever had, and we cannot wait to return next time we are in London! read more

A very large, extremely touristy restaurant, probably seating over 200, in multiple dining areas. With children welcomed. Not surprising - it's only two blocks to Piccadilly Circus. Sadly, I found the servers to be inconsistent and not communicating, six (!) servers asked me the same question in the first 10 minutes. And then nothing for 20 minutes. There is visibly a brigade system, captain, servers, bussers, etc., ...but obviously not stringently enforced. Uh oh. Strange, for a restaurant that claims to have been serving for 99 years. Unfortunately, I was brought 2 starters at the same time, so one got a little cold. At least, almost all the mains are served in warming server plates. The food was not bad, but there seemed to be an overemphasis on the sauces: The Bhalla Papdi Chaat - lentil dumplings served "splashed" with yoghurt & chutneys. Sorry. I meant, "drowned." Or, the Nargisi Lamb Kebab Curry, a minced lamb kebab stuffed with a quail egg... Not Scotch eggs, not at all. Nope. This version is floating in a Curry sauce soup. The sauce emphasis is... quantity. Definitely one of the best Indian foods I've had. Regarded as one of the oldest Indian restaurants in uk, one Michelin star is nothing to scoff at. All their dishes are executed at a high level. Greatest experience from the porter downstairs...very welcoming , to the lady at reception who took our coats and took us to a table to our main waitress, Drashti very attentive, friendly and with good recommendations for me, to Salfaz , kind and helpful...GREAT service 10/10!! Having just landed from a red-eye flight from San Francisco, the first thing I needed to do is to find a great place for dinner. All of my friends told me that London has the best Indian food and one of my colleagues recommended Veeraswamy. I didn't have reservations but they were able to take me at 5:30 pm. The signage is a little inconspicuous and I almost missed it. The host welcomed me by saying "This is the best Indian restaurant in the world. We are not going to disappoint." They quickly sat me down and handed me the food and drinks menus. I saw that they had a four course tasting menu and that's almost an automatic thing for me to order. For my non-alcoholic drink, I chose the classic mango lassi. The tasting menu started with an amuse - a really small cup of fragrant Mulligatawny soup. That was just amazing and I knew that this was a great choice for my first dinner in London. The appetizers included a Tiger Prawn and Chicken Tikka Masala - both were just excellent and full of different flavors. The main course was four different curries (lobster, chicken, lamb and pineapple) with some naan and their tomato rice. I was just blown away by the different curries. My favorite was the lobster curry and I couldn't stop dipping my naan in it. I am just stunned by all the flavors from the various curries and the balance accomplished in each dish. Indian food in the US doesn't come close. Dessert was chocolate ganache - not particularly Indian but it was definitely a Michelin-level dish. The mango lassi was very tasty as well. Service was just excellent and the meal cost me about 95 pounds. The best part is that I didn't have to pay all sorts of fees and gratuity like in SF. The dining room was elegant and it's the type of anachronistic ambiance that I really enjoy. This was definitely a Michelin star dining experience. Highly, highly recommended. read more

Everything was delicious. The menu was labeled with a variety of codes (for vegan, vegetarian, dairy free, nut free, and gluten free), to help those (like me!) with allergies or dietary preferences. It's entirely possible to have a full vegan or vegetarian meal here. I'm surprised more reviews don't mention that. Fully vegan, the pineapple curry side dish was a standout! The service and decor are great. Lots of reviews mention this, so take our collective word for it. Sitting in the main dining room overlooking Regent Street, it felt lovely to enjoy a slow and savoury lunch whilst people rushed by below. A few drawbacks: my table expected the duck vindaloo to be spicy, and it was not. We would have liked to see the dessert menu labeled with allergy information, and it was not. We also wish the restaurant provided all-gender/non-gender binary toilets, and it currently does not. Other than that, tip-top food. Stumbled upon this restaurant yesterday and search of Indian food. As Destiny would have it, Veeraswy is the oldest Indian restaurant in London and has a rich history. There is a sense of classiness, and all the staff, including general managers are extremely professional and attentive. The food was delicious, but expect to pay accordingly, as there was a minimum of £55 per head although we probably spent over 300 pounds, including the drinks with the party of three. There was really nothing missing from this Michelin-star historic London restaurant. The atmosphere was inviting without being a pedantic homage to India as is common in Indian restaurants. The food was excellent. We had the muligatawny (awesome) chicken masala, the mixed bread basket (which was way too much for a party of two - one selection would have been a better choice), the samosas and a lamb shank breaded, fried and with a delicious, savory sauce. The chicken and lamb were tender and delicious. The fresh, aromatic spices popped with every bite. The service was professional and friendly from the door to the good-bye. As told by others, the oldest Indian restaurant in London! So it was a quick yes to give it a try! When entering the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a "bouncer" and they'll want to make sure you have reservations. Once he knows that you're on the list, he'll phone the front that guests are arriving and send us toward a set of elevators to the restaurant. Once you get to the main entrance of the restaurant, someone will there to greet you and walk you to your table. As you do so, you'll notice very nice decor and ambiance. It's a very fancy place that's for sure. It's hard to recall everything we ordered since it was a large group and we ate family style, but I have to say that everything we ate was delicious. The service was on par, it felt like we had a group of personal / dedicated waiters or bus boys because they were ready for any questions or requests at a single wave of a hand. Of course, with the fancy ambiance, delicious food, and superior service, expect the bill to be a shocker. I'm glad I've had the opportunity to try the place once. With prices this high and publicity this good, you know you're going to have a great experience. Tucked away in a secluded corner near Regent Street, you kind of have to know what you're looking for to find the door leading up to the restaurant. Thankfully, there is almost always a doorman dressed in fancy clothing and a light-projected sign on the ground in front of the entrance. If you're still having trouble, look for the alleyway that leads to Gaucho and the Hagen coffee shop. The restaurant itself is pretty darn gorgeous on the inside, and the secretive nature of its location adds more to the mystery that makes it one of those "special" places only the locals and well-informed tourists know about. The menus are broad, and while you're not likely to find anything "reasonably-priced" here, I assure you it's well-worth a splurge to come try it at least once. For your pre-meal aperitif, they have a gorgeous selection of high-quality wines, handcrafted specialty cocktails, and some authentic non-alcoholic beverages that go well with the food you're about to eat. Th starters range from well-known favorites like samosas and naan bread, to some lesser-known specialities that you'll need to ask your server about for the full details of why they're so popular. Given how large the menu is, they slice it up into more than just starters, mains, and dessert; they give you a wide selection of meats from lamb, chicken, and seafood, to more vegetarian-friendly options, including sides smaller dishes for the less-hungry. I can speak for the cocktails- which are perfectly prepared- the pistachio chicken which comes in a green curry sauce, the lamb shank which has a delicate sweetness, and the lemon rice which has a nice, delicate fragrance. Everything is amazing, however, at almost £5 for one slice of naan, I'd say the portions do not justify the prices. Is it pricey? Yes. Is it worth it...? You decide. Almost a 100 years old! Granted I'm from Miami, an Indian food desert. Previous best Indian was in Singapore, but veeraswamy was the best Indian experience I've had so far. The first dish we had was scallops, good but the weakest dish we would have here. The crab briyani and the lamb shank in pastry were phenomenal. Service was adequate without being overbearing. Best Indian food I've ever had in the best setting. I went for dinner 8 years ago for work, and back again a couple of weeks ago with my husband and he was so impressed. We had a great dinner, one of the best we had on our whole 2 week trip to Paris, Amsterdam, and London. 5 stars, worth taking a date or group for a special occasion or just when you want incredible food. No complaints. I also messed up the time of our reservation (booked 10p but meant to book 8p) and they were able to accommodate us at the time we showed up. Really appreciated that since we had plans for the other evenings we were in London and wouldn't have been able to eat here this trip if they wouldn't have been able to fit us in. read more

Magnificent meal in the oldest Indian restaurant in the UK! Greeted downstairs by a doorman and then a hostess, after which we took an elevator up to the beautiful space where we were greeted again and escorted to our table. As an appetizer, I had the mulligatawny soup -- I love this soup, and find it's different every time I have it. This one was probably the best I've ever had. My partner had (and loved) the crab cake (I don't eat seafood, so you'll have to take her word for it!). After that her main course was the Lobster Malabar Curry -- a splurge, and worth it, she said. I had the vegetarian platter -- a few smaller options, including a dal, that was phenomenal. We shared a garlic naan (they pre-cut it and refer to it as naan "fingers") and then didn't bother with rice, which I'd recommend doing. We were definitely full -- but not disgustingly so, which I feel often can happen when you have naan AND rice. The last thing I'll write -- which I've written in other reviews -- is how much it bums me out when people come in to nice restaurants dressed so casually. This is a lovely restaurant -- the decor is beautiful, the folks who work there are dressed beautifully -- the patrons should make at least a little effort. Two British men sat next to us wearing shorts and graphic t-shirts, and it was disappointing. Sorry to be snooty -- but it's an expensive restaurant, and so if you can afford to splurge and go to someplace like Veeraswamy, you can afford to throw on some pants and a button-up shirt. #rantover Service was amazing -- everyone who worked there was so polite and helpful.
