We have been here so many times as it's our favorite restaurant in London, but this was our first India Club dinner and wow. So happy we got to try it!! We came to Gunpowder for an early dinner before heading to Guys & Dolls at the nearby Bridge Theatre. Because the food came out fast we were able to order more as we went along, which I love. (Who knows exactly what they'll want/be able to eat right at the start?) The Rasam ke Bomb, a modern take on masala dosa, delighted my dining companion and me. The Spicy Venison & Vermicelli Doughnut was unlike anything I've tried. And the Mustard Malai Broccoli and Tandoori Chicken Chop were flavorful and unique. I'd order them all again! I left Gunpowder impressed by this very fun food (I appreciated getting a bit of flair before we even got to our show!) that was also delicious and well-spiced. read more

Gunpowder Tower Bridge gets a lot right at first glance. The location is stunning, the interior is crisp and modern, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier--warm, attentive, and genuinely invested in making the experience pleasant. But when it comes to the food, things start to unravel. We went with the £22 tasting menu, which sounded promising. The chicken lollipop was enjoyable--crispy, well-seasoned, and flavorful. But the rest? Underwhelming. The dishes seem stuck in limbo--too spicy for the uninitiated, but lacking the depth and complexity that real food lovers expect. It's the kind of menu you imagine being crafted more for Instagram influencers than culinary connoisseurs. The most perplexing dish? The curry egg masala--two hard-boiled eggs topped with a thick masala-style sauce. Not terrible, but conceptually confusing. As one friend put it, a bit too "mother and child reunion" for comfort--not exactly how I want to get my protein intake. Gunpowder is certainly a step up from Dishoom--it shows ambition and has moments of promise--but it still feels more like a brand than a bold kitchen. I went with my family and we ordered approximately half the menu to share (Rasam ke Bomb, French bean pakoras, beetroot croquettes, tandoori chicken chop, chaat, soft shell crab, grilled artichoke hearts, grilled prawns, lamb chop, chutney trio, bread and butter pudding). We enjoyed every single dish tremendously, and didn't have a single negative thing to say about any of them. Our favorites though (which we ordered a second round of because they were THAT good) were the artichoke hearts and the soft shell crab. These are not traditionally my favorite ingredients, but we were so blown away by these dishes we had to order more. The service was also impeccable- the restaurant manager and staff very diligently checked up on if we needed anything, and were very efficient and friendly the entire time. At the end of the meal they treated us with a second dessert, which was also fantastic. The restaurant was beautiful and cozy- the SoHo location isn't large but didn't feel cramped either. We very comfortably fit our table of five and it was lively the entire time we were there. The location was also extremely convenient in the heart of London. All in all, we loved this restaurant and would love to come back next time we're in the city. read more

We were a group of 10 people, for dinner and visited over the xmas break. So had the chance to try a good amount of the small and sharing plates. I must say the Reshmi Wagyu Beef Skewer was awesome - grilled to perfection with very flavorful seasoning. The Rasam Ka Bomb food shot was legit as well - a fun take on masala dosa flavours indeed. I enjoyed the masala egg curry as well! The Kerala beef fry , the Goan style prawn, and the pork braised ribs were good in concept, but it left me wanting for something - the seasoning was not too exciting to me. But overall - it was a fun evening with good food. The decor is a modern industrial look and well lit! We will be back to try more! read more

While I found a lot of the fine dining in London pretty subpar in comparison to NYC, Indian fare was the exception. Gunpowder is more of a modern take on Indian fare and it was one of our best meals in the UK. Located right in Tower Bridge, its in a newly developed area and the restaurant is swank, modern and clean. Reservations are a good idea and they'll require a deposit to hold the table so be prepared. The menu has a lot of familiar items dressed up for a more modern take (chicken tandoori, saag paneer, etc.) but the portions are more tapas size than a full entree. The flavors here are profound and really well done. Our meal spread didn't have any disappointments, it was all good. Service here is attentive and the staff here is excellent. If I'm going to gripe, the value isn't there since it's pretty pricey for the amount of food you get. If you want a good meal though, this place is a good bet to do right by you. I think if you're going to do a "modern" take on Indian food, you really have to hit it out of the park, otherwise people get upset that their favorite hearty cuisine is being done a disservice. Positives: It's in a great location, amazing walkable alley. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, and the service was great. Immediately greeted and seated. Now for the meat of the review. I found the food to be a bit disappointing, not bad, per se, but I was not wowed. The aloo Chaat was a bit too sweet and I thought a little scant. The chicken was okay and I would say that the paneer was the highlight of the meal. Overall the portions are very small and I left feeling hungry. The dishes are served tapas style so they are small but still quite pricey! Also I was underwhelmed by the rice with the gunpowder. It was an interesting experience to try but I'm not sure it would be my first stop if I visit again. read more

5 of us dropped in without a reservation. Snooty hostess told us there's no way they can seat 5 people, they can only seat 2 and 4 people. I am not from London, but this was weird to me. Went back again to ask a different host if we can be accommodated. He mentioned there was only one table like that and it ll take 10 mins. And yep, we were seated in 10 mins. Saw the snooty hostess eyeing our table later on. Didn't have the decency to come apologize either. Food was delicious. Servers didn't appear to knowledgeable about the food. One of them said they don't have "curries" while there was an "egg curry" on the menu. Being Indian and a New Yorker, I've always experienced excellent service in Indian restaurants in both continents. But here, I felt a bit weirded out by their service. Won't be coming back. Plz educate your hostess that not seating 5 people is just stupid, especially when you can seat them via a different host. read more

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, the food was delicious and the ambiance lovely. On the other hand, the service was very rushed and the pricing was very high. We went for dinner before a show at the nearby theatre. I expected a somewhat leisurely meal because we had about 90 minutes. The waitstaff kept trying to take our dishes before we were done, and it ended up feeling rushed. The food was a slightly unique take on Indian flavors. Portions are small and everything is a la carte. The value for the food wasn't great IMO. This is not a good restaurant for kids. Overall, I wouldn't go again but I did enjoy my meal. read more

One of the best things about visiting London is the Indian food. Found Gunpowder. Very hip and very good.. tried several dishes starting with aloo chaat, then the spicy venison doughnut and Maa's lamb chops. Portions are meant for sharing. Not small but not huge either. The flavors were well balanced as the aloo chaat helped cool the heat from the sauce from the venison and the pork. All were good but the balance made it great. I took a recommendation for desert and ordered the bread and butter pudding which was a perfect finish. The service was outstanding and considering the location (in the south bank shadow of Tower Bridge) the prices were very reasonable. As I sat and took it all in, it was amazing to watch the staff welcome in what I can only assume are regulars as if they were old friends they hadn't seen in years. We found this gem after sightseeing in London all morning. What an oasis of calm. The atmosphere is mellow, the decor is beautiful and the service, especially from Denzel, was excellent. We ordered the beetroot courgettes which were beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious, then we had the saag paneer which is one of the best things I've ever tasted. We would have ordered more, but we were so perfectly satisfied we didn't need to. This is an outstanding find in a city of great restaurants. Highly recommended. read more

One fatal flaw. Everything about this place was great with one glaring exception. And while I would love to give the place 1 star based on how much I missed said exception I realize that it is their prerogative to choose to not serve a major staple of a national cuisine. It is also my choice to leave (which I would have if not in a group) but regrettably I did not. So it's really my fault and for this reason only 1 star deducted. All that being said, why in the blue hell would you not serve naan, kulcha, pappadam or any bread at an Indian restaurant?! Would a Mexican place outlaw tortillas? Would a sushi restaurant forgo rice? Is there a schnitzel free German restaurant--I doubt it. It's madness! Naan is my favorite part of the meal--how else am I to sop up the delicious sauces? It nearly broke me watching these sauce laden bowls being carried away to the demise of a dishwasher. The food was great, service great, but until there is some naan on the menu I won't be back. read more

Another thing that I found appalling was that there was no advance warning on the menu that they charge a 12.5% service fee on top of the governments 20% tax.
