It's hard for me to slam Tacodeli. Partially because insulting Tacodeli in Austin is like burning the flag and partly because the tacos they sell through coffee shops etc throughout town are pretty fabulous (especially the migas and cowboy). But frankly, I'm just disappointed in the actual restaurant. My wife and I saw an obstetrician at NAMC, so we were up here pregnant and hungry quite often. I don't understand why their tacos would be 1) less good when purchased fresh 2) more expensive when purchased fresh 3) served up with such self important detachment. The person behind the counter is always busy doing something else and quite rude, but I like the people who actually bring the food. The "Vaquero" simply stinks when made fresh and the whole experience just bugs. I'm sorry Austin, this is another one I JUST DON'T GET. read more

TacoDeli or Torchy's. TacoDeli or Torchy's. This is now the difficult decision I have to face when craving tacos during my visits to Austin. Can't I just have both at the same time? The TacoDeli in North Austin is located right off of 1325 and Mopac. It's in a great location with plenty of seating in and outdoors. I do wish to check out the other two locations and after this review, you know I'll be doing that in no time. The food is great. I tried the Heather (veggie taco but comes with grilled/fried queso fresco) and it was awesome. The grilled queso fresco took this taco to another level. I had a bite of the Frontera Fundida Portabella taco and also thought it was great. The other two tacos I had were the bean and cheese (amazing) and the potato and cheese. The potatoes in the taco weren't diced potatoes but instead were fresh mashed potatoes. At first I wasn't sure what to think about it but as I kept eating and eating, I liked it more and more. You have your choice of tortillas and I got the whole wheat flour tortillas which were perfect. There's about 4 salsas to choose from but the Dona is king here. It's second hottest next to the habanero (which is good) but the Dona is the way to go. The Roja salsa is also very tasty. The Verde salsa isn't bad. I highly recommend choosing the Honey Limeade as your drink of choice. It's refresing and delicious. Ask for no ice because you get more and the drink is already chilled. I can't wait to come back to try out more delicious items here. I hear the tacos are the way to go and I want to try more breakfast varieties. I'm hungry after writing this review but luckily I brushed my teeth already so I won't be having anything to eat right now, but if TacoDeli was in front of me, I would've already started eating it before I finished this review! read more

I love TacoDeli but this location TOTALLY skimps on ingredients compared to the original. We normally get them from the south location for office breakfasts and the Jess Special always leaves me full. I come here and I have to order two to get to the same level of fullness. Plus, its crawling with people in a bad way...you cannot get in and out of the parking lot. For breakfast tacos near home ( I can walk here which is what is an extra bummer about the lack of body in the taco) I'm totally going to stick with the La Fogata truck in the parking lot next door in front of Dallas nightclub. Taco Deli is pretty much Torchy's arch nemesis in Austin. Both are really great places to eat with well prepared and tasty tacos. Both are great lunch places because they provide quick service for those of us on 1 hr lunch breaks. Or those who just need food on the go. In my opinion, after eating at both places, I prefer Taco Deli Tacos over Torchy's. The main reason is that it's just not as oily and messy. Not that a Torchy's taco is drenched with oil and falls apart while you eat it (sometimes), but there's a lot more going on with it. Taco Deli just comes off cleaner, but just as tasty. One downside? Taco Deli salsa. It's good. It's very good, but it's nothing compared to Torchy's salsa and sauces. I typically get the pulled pork tacos, which are always delicious, savory and well prepared. Taco Deli might not be the best tacos in town, but they're a wonderful default spot to go to if you're in the mood for great tacos. read more

Um so there seems to be this rivalry between the cult of Taco Deli and a little other taco place here in Austin that drizzles their tacos in queso. Gross. And besides, Huffington Post agrees with me. They rated Taco Deli #1 in the USA. Taco Deli attracts those who have a more refined taste for quality. The taco specials can not be beat. My husband and I love the Ceviche Yucatan, and the Pork Belly. Taco deli has locally brewed kombucha to boot. Every wood table is hand painted by a local artist. And the staff are so sweet and silly. They have theme days to dress up. None of these office space-esque efforts like big corporate places have. The staff come in with cat ears one day, and something else completely random the next. They enjoy their job and it shows. They are always super friendly and it gives the place a truly Austin feel. One of the best possible ways I can imagine to start my weekend. read more

Taco time!! Taco time. I like tacos and this place has great choices. So I went here a couple of the yelp reviews. That yelpers for a great find. The extras are splendid. You can add creamy mashed potatoes to a taco. How can you not love that. Plus the Otto taco is a upgrade from the boring bean and cheese. Let's not forget that greasy perfectly spicy chorizo. Great breakfast taco selection, and even better hot sauces. I love getting the creamy green one, which looks mild, but has great heat. I had the migas taco w/ bacon my last time in, which isn't as good as Jalapeno Joe's, but still delicious. I mean, how can you go wrong with pico, eggs, cheese,and tortilla strips all scrambled together in a taco and then add bacon to it? You can't. They also do tacos of the day, which I've heard can be quite tasty. I'm told the scallops one is awesome. This location gets crazy busy, but they do a decent job getting your order out. I always make sure to arrive before the 11:30ish lunch rush to order and eat in a reasonably comfortable space. This place really needs a bigger space overall! I think there's something for everyone here - the DeliBeli (pork belly) special on Wednesdays is hard to beat. I'm also a fan of the happy taco (chicken). While I'm not a fan of raw onions or spicy food, I find that I can eat both of these without burning my taste buds. There's just so much tasty going on, I don't notice the microbits of heat in these particular tacos. First off i gotta give a big shout out to Anna G. for informing me that there even was a Tacodeli up north. Apparently i had been driving by this place for who knows how long without noticing it... So i hit up Tacodeli on the was back to the Pflug and had the Sirloin Egg & Cheese taco and the Migas taco. Loaded up with salsa and took em' to go. Wow, very good. Shoulda got 2 of the sirloin tacos. So I'm becoming a huge Tacodeli fan. The vibe here isn't as here cool as the South location since it sits right off of MOPAC. How excited can you get about that. Been to quite a few taco places in town and this one still has my vote! to start off...i have to give extra kudos to the red sauce...it makes me drool just thinking about it. this sauce has this unique "meat" flavor to it, and everytime i leave i have to fill up like 10 togo containers so that i can save some for later. the tacos are huge. they def stuff it with flavorful meats and fresh veggies to your likings. I like how this place offers the choice of flour, wheat or corn tortillas (no additional charge). The staff is great and service is fairly quick. My favorite taco here is the Cowboy--marinated meat with freta, avocado, and cilantro i believe...it was just fantastic. all their meats are seasoned very well and its dripping with juices. Beware that if you come here around lunch time...there will be limited seating and you might have a wait for a bit. BUT its worth it! read more

If you enjoy instant mashed potatoes that taste like uncooked grits, this is the place for you! I have never seen liquid instant "potatoes" on a breakfast taco. It looked like a pound of queso was dumped on top of my eggs. This has to be the worst breakfast taco that I have ever partially consumed in my life. My soggy tacos aside, this place has one of the least appealing ambiances ever. I've been to plenty of crowded, noisy places but this one was a chaos bomb in the worst way. The setup of the place is just insane. People waiting for food by the salsa bar which is also by the trash cans which also serves as the hallway to the restroom, patio, and employee entrance/exit area. So people with open sauces are banging into people fumbling with cash and receipts coming from the register. On top of that, there's nosystem to get your food except employees screaming inaudible names across the restaurant. I had no idea what they were screaming and no idea how the people outside on the patio were ever supposed to get their food. I not even adequately describing the level of noise and utter confusion in every direction. I do t know why anyone would come here. read more

Oops... looks like Torchy may have some competition. A bit packed & cramped due to the apparent popularity but worth the wait. And I appreciate how the extensive menu is categorized. It presents another one of those welcome challenges to explore further options. Tried the Space Cowboy with marinated portobellos & guac with crumbled white cheese. Delicious except that the guac tasted a just touch heavy on the lime juice (forgiven this time). And the Chicken Mole with diced onions & cilantro is remarkably simple but soooooo very satisfying. I don't get the hype about this place. Got the Migas plate and was disappointed. The black beans were just so salty. The liquified mashed potatoes took me by surprise..... Tasteless and I thought it was melted Swiss cheese for a second. The plate had me thinking ," why would you do this to migas?" Like I am all for taking a new spin on plates but I am confused about this one. This place made me create a yelp account so that everyone could know how delicious it is. I was looking for something interesting for lunch on yelp and everyone seemed to be raving about it. As soon as I walked in, the awesome aroma of seasonings hit me. I think I knew right then this would be a great lunch. I ordered the cowboy and mojo fish as a Blue Plate (2 tacos, rice and beans, + drink). I didn't expect much for the mojo fish but it was surprisingly flavorful. My husband and I are basically obsessed with this place, and we eat here at least once a week. We'll wake up late on a Saturday, look at eachother and say, "TacoDeli?" And it's totally a "Is the Pope Catholic" kind of question, because we are addicted to the stuff. We both have about four favorite tacos that we rotate through... the tacos are pretty much all unbelievably delicious. Just pick a couple that sound good, you can't go wrong. The tacos are where it's at. Don't be a fool and order a salad or a torta the first time you visit. That being said, I do really like the chicken salad. The queso is also awesome. Be warned that this food in no way resembles the Tex Mex I grew up eating in South Texas. They use refried black beans (fried in something healthy, I'm sure), queso fresco, and mashed potatoes in the breakfast tacos. The only thing that really bums me out about Taco Deli is that it's so freakin small! It gets wall-to-wall packed during weekday lunch. Sometimes we get wedged in next to a table of IBM people, and then we have to listen to them talking about work, and that is something that brings me down when I just want to relax and eat tacos. But, back to the pros: it's cheap, the employees are really nice, and it's clean. Eat there, you will become addicted like me. And then maybe they will open up a bigger new location :) read more

Love this place! It is always my go to for tacos. They use farm to table ingredients that are always fresh and delicious! The carne asada tacos are my favorite. For a salad I always go with the Espinaca with sirloin added and Jalapeño ranch! I have one of the 2 at least once week! Their staff is always happy to help you and very social! read more

I went there today cause its literally across the street from my house. I got the Mole tacos.. one sirloin and one chicken.. they were absolutely disqusting. It was probubly by far THE WORST service i EVER had. the only thing i enjoyed was the chips and queso.. the people were horribly unprofessional. it was too small of a space for as many people that were there. there werent even many people there, the place is just so small it makes you feel like your suffocating and people are breathing down your kneck.. I took ONE bite of each of them and threw them away. I spent 18 DOLLARS. for what i could have gotten and enjoyed for WAY less somewhere else. i do NOT recommend this place to anyone. prefer it gets shut down and something better is put there. Thats just my review. Sucks when i read good things about a place and go try it, for something new.. and it just totally bombs like this place. Somehow I failed to write a review of TacoDeli over my dozens of trips here. Please forgive me for I have sinned. I could write a long review romanticizing each taco I've cavorted with, but that would last hours. For a long time, I debated Tacodeli vs. Torchy's. In my aged wisdom, I've embraced TacoDeli as the pinnacle. Mojo Fish! Mojo Fish! It's not uncommon for me to chat "Mojo Fish!" at least once a week at the office. I've gotten the work gang hooked on these tasty, cheap tacos. Other recommendations -- any breakfast taco with potato. Instead of lame tots or hash browns, Tacodeli puts creamy mashed potatoes in their tacos. Their queso is also addictive. Mix it with the dona salsa for an extra hot cheesy experience. The service is awesome. This place is a gourmet restaurant disguised as a taco stand. You are simply not going to find better tacos in Austin. And yes, that includes Torchy's (which I also love, but not quite as much as Tacodeli). I've eaten here many times, and I've yet to encounter an item that I didn't absolutely love. My personal favorites include the Guacasabi Tuna, any of the Mole tacos, and...last but not least...the Happy Taco. How do they get something as simple as chicken, mushrooms and onion to taste that good? I have no idea, but I am drawn to it like a moth to a flame. So, why not a five star rating, then? As it turns out, Tacodeli, at least in this location, is a bit of a victim of its own success. If you're going there for lunch, either get there before 11:30, or plan on spending an extra half hour finding parking, standing in line, and finding a place to sit. The dining area could be double the size that it is now, and would still be packed to capacity. And when the ordering line is backed up, you can bet that the kitchen is soon to follow (although, considering the circumstances, they do a pretty decent job of getting the food out as quickly as they can). When your food does arrive, it's delivered with a friendly smile by the really cool and helpful staff. They are all superb. One last bit- I don't really know whether one could really call this a complaint, but God in Heaven above, do I wish this place was open at night. They are currently only open until 3PM, and with food as great as this, that's a mistake in my book. read more

Tacodeli vs. Torchy's Tacos. Tough decision, but Tacodeli wins out for me. When I have guests in town, I always take them here. Every time, I get strange looks when I tell them we're going to grab tacos, but they all understand why after they take that first bite. The scallops tacos are my absolute favorite (only on Thursday), but the Cowboy taco is a very close second. Both are a perfect blend of flavors and fresh ingredients that's like eating a slice of happiness. If you're craving a cowboy during breakfast time, order a Vaquero and add sirloin. Yum. With the new renovations and expanded seating area, it's much easier find a seat inside. I know i'm in trouble when the staff knows me by name and my order before I've said a word! read more

If you crave tacos, this is one of the top places to go. They have daily specials, and their manu is top notch. I have yet to try something I have not thoroughly enjoyed. Many are the weekends when I will look at my companion, raise an eyebrow in query, and mouth "Tacos?" The refried black beans make me feel like I've never had a breakfast taco before. Taco Deli North, thank you for existing. You may be one of the only things that helped ease my transition to North Austin! As much as I miss the south location, the food is equally as delicious at this location. As I said in my other Taco Deli review: "The Jess Special is by far my favorite breakfast taco, but I do love their bean and cheese as well. I love that they source their eggs locally and do their best to support other local vendors. For lunch, I just adore the queso, I could drink it with a straw, but choose instead to drink their delicious aqua fresca from a straw (watermelon, pineapple mix). The heather and the mojo fish are amazing, but as everyone says, so is the Cowboy if your feeling the meat craving. Best of all are the people that work there - super friendly and fantastic! This is going to be very anti-Austinite of me to say, and is going to make me very unpopular, but I don't like Tacodeli. Whew. I said it. When I last went I got The Vaquero and The Otto and neither were really that great. Maybe it was because I had the notion that these were the "Best Breakfast Tacos in Austin" which I do not agree with. The salsas, however, are good! I actually like the tacos they offer at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Guadalupe, but I can never seem to get the same thing at the actual location. I particularily love the cowboy taco which comes with perfectly seasoned, juicy tendeloin chunks, grilled corn and carmelized onions. sometimes they also have a daily speacial that features a scallop taco that is divine. This was my first time trying the Tacodeli, our office is at 9000 Burnet Rd they are at 12001 Burnet Rd so it should be easy right? Nope traffic at 12:15pm on Burnet Rd suxxors. Plus coming back the little U lane under mopac was closed so I gotta wait at 4 horrible lights to get back on Burnet. I was told to try the Frontera Fundido Taco - $2,95 Sirloin - Grilled Chicken or Sirloin ($2.75 chicken) garnished with sauteed poblano pepper and onion strips glazed with melted Monterrey jack cheese. Plus I had already ordered a Mexico City ($2.75 Sirloin/$2.50 Chicken) which is Grilled Sirloin with diced onion and cilantro. Both were excellent, the sirloin was grilled perfectly and it is alot of meat. I have to say I did not notice any cheese on the Frontera, but it does say, "glazed." They have a very interesting menu which you can find on their website. They had three kinds of salsa you can pick your own. I tried the salsa verde, which was ok, but the salsa dona was excellent. It is sort of a green creamy salsa with a bite. Really good on the sirloin. The only negative from my point of view was that it was horribly crowded, and the owner or manager was sitting there having a business meeting with a Realtor right at lunch time. Dude, schedule your meeting a 2pm not during the lunch rush! Go make my taco! If you order to go, there is no place to stand while you wait, they need a microphone so peoples can stand outside and hear their name. When I go back it won't be during the lunch hour (I can go to lunch whenever I want) and I will probably just get one taco and a side of chips and salsa or rice and beans. I want to go back and try one of their breakfast taco specials. El Popeye - $2.50 - Spinach and scrambled egg breakfast taco with crumbled queso fresco Mexican white cheese. All in all it was great food. I dogged the manager earlier but he also has a damn good eye. All the front-end staff were home grown Austin hotties. Nice job on that. Yes, I remember being intimidated by the menu. Lots of weird names and weird combinations. However, like eating at Uchiko, you just have to trust the chefs and roll with it. They know what they're doing. They seriously do. In all the times I've gone and eaten there, I can only think of a couple of tacos I didn't like and wouldn't eat again -- but they also happen to be some of my girlfriend's favorites. The cowboy taco may be one of the culinary world's finest creations. The brazo fuerte queso is also amazing. I eat here too often according to my pocketbook but not often enough according to my palate. Online ordering is generally the way to go because the lines can be ridiculous and the space gets cramped quickly. TACO DELI!!!! Why can't there be tacos like this in California?! The taco's at Tacodeli, are the best taco's I have EVER tried! This is a must try spot in Austin, TX for anyone that decides to come here! So I came and ordered the Frontera Fundido Sirloin taco, and Carne Asada taco. The meat is soooooooooo tender and flavorful. Just thinking about the taco's here makes my mouth water. I am the biggest sucker for Mexican food, and Tacodeli is pretty amazing. Tastes amazing too. I would recommend coming here a bit early, because the lines get pretty long once you hit the lunch rush. By the time we were done eating, the line was far out the door.
