Since I live about a half mile from Taco Deli, I eat here about once a week. Their tacos are good but a little pricey. They do use fresh ingredients and their tortillas are fresh. Personally I think Torchy's Tacos is better. But Tacodeli is okay in a pinch. read more

Simple: absolutely the best in Austin. High quality ingredients and a stunning selection of interior-Mexican-inspired options. Try the Cowboy (pictured), Pastor, and Chile Relleno (one of the few authentic versions around). A few months ago they featured a Chile en Nogada taco. I (and my wife who is crom Mexico) was floored. Craving this unique concoction, we went back for dinner (they don't open for dinner), then went back for lunch and found they no longer had it as it was a "featured" selection. The salsas are incredible. They also have a delicious selection of refreshing "aguas frescas" (including watermelon.) Did I mention they don't open for dinner? THEY NEED TO OPEN FOR DINNER! read more

Tacodeli - "Pastor" and "Cowboy" tacos at Tacodeli - Seafood Near Me - Austin, Texas

Went for lunch. Tacos were salty. Food seemed very pricey. Salsa was good. Service was fast.

Bad service. Ordered through Door Dash. 3 tacos were not delivered, though they were reflected on the ticket. Store simply left them out of the bag. Called the store "there's nothing we can do." Obviously, I got a refund through DD, but the "I don't give a flip" attitude from the store was surprising. Will order Torchy's next time. read more

Tacodeli is easily the best taco place in the city. The menu has endless options. All the produce, meats, eggs, and other ingredients are locally grown and raised. Tacodeli surpassing quality is its fresh ingredients and excellent flavors. Read all the previous awards that have been reviewed with this place. They have multiple combonations of Steak, Chicken, Pork, Fish and wide variety of breakfast tacos. Also do not forget their 4 signature sauces including the famous spicy green Dona. There is always a daily special taco. The kitchen is just filled with great tasty creations. My favorite are: Cowboy Taco: Seasoned steak, corn, fresh peppers, onions, guacamole, queso fresco. Perfect. Al Pastor: Perfect recipe El Picosito (Mon special): A spicy sesame flavored beef, with avocado and queso fresco Chille Relleno: (Wed special) Spicy pork in a rich cochinita pibil sauce inside a poblano pepper with picked onions and queso fresco All breakfast tacos are fantastic including The Otto (black refried beans, cheese, bacon, avocado) Tacodeli is only open till 3pm but will always be packed during peak lunch hours. You can easily say the restaurant has a strong following customer base. Lastly the staff that work there is very friendly. If there was one place in Austin people needed to try, hands down Tacodeli is where you need to take them. read more

I thought this would just be another taco joint but I was WRONG! We came here for lunch and I ordered the beef tacos and queso. The beef taco had a nice flavor to it unlike other places who make them really bland or use a generic taco seasoning. My husband enjoyed what he ordered that we came back the next day for breakfast!!! My chorizo taco was so tasty! When we go back to Austin, this will be the first place we visit! read more

Somehow I failed to write a review of TacoDeli over my dozens of trips here. Please forgive me for I have sinned. I could write a long review romanticizing each taco I've cavorted with, but that would last hours. For a long time, I debated Tacodeli vs. Torchy's. In my aged wisdom, I've embraced TacoDeli as the pinnacle. Whereas Torchy's requires queso, fried goodness, anda borderline heart attack to reach the taco climax, Tacodeli does it with spice, flavor, and a fine selection of ingredients and delivers a satisfaction that lingers long after. read more

Came here with two friends and honestly, I don't remember what we ordered. Went with several that fellow yelpers suggested. Ordered about 7 tacos to taste for the three of us. Let me try to recall what we got (of course I'm checking the menu online haha). - Mojo Fish - Frontera Fundido Sirloin - Al Pastor - Mole Sirloin - El Conquistador - Lomo Especial (Sat Special) Got 2 Blue Plate combos. YES. DO IT. Spanish Rice + Refried Black Beans. Yum. They were ALL delicious. I feel like most taco places throw ingredients together without fine tuning the contents IN the taco. This place knows how to marinate their meat. They know what yummy is. Didn't even use their chili sauces (which I've read is also amazing). Just wanted to savor their original flavors. So. good. read more

Taco Deli vs. Torchy's Tacos. Austin is a taco town and there are many options. But these two are Austin's iconic local chains. Each has its merits and I frequent both....often. For me, it comes down to this: Both places have great tasting and interesting tacos. The best tasting tacos are at Taco Deli. Mole tacos, the Mexico City, Al Pastor and Akaushi Picadillo are some of my favorites. And yay for Scallop Taco Thursdays! The fact that they use locally sourced (Heartbrand Ranch, Lightsey Farms, Oak Hill Farms, Pedernales Valley Farms....just to name a few) and organic ingredients makes a taste difference. Taco Deli WINS! Taco Deli's menu is bigger and they have a daily taco special. VS Torchy's menu is smaller and they have a monthly taco special. Taco Deli WINS! I can't help feeling the hit in my wallet every trip to Taco Deli. An average of nearly $4 a modest sized taco (although some tacos are more substantial than others, i.e. the meaty pork Chile Relleno vs. the lightly filled Akaushi Picadillo). I don't need a ton to fill me up but 2 of these tacos usually doesn't do the trick (so an $8 bill that might leave me hungry, since I'm not a fan of rice/beans combo plates). Torchy's tacos are much more fat; they are stuffed so many ingredients sometimes the double tortilla can't hold it all together. TORCHY'S WINS! Salsa. Salsa is secondarily important only to tacos. Taco Deli features a salsa bar and has several options and it's fun to try a variety of them. Torchy's adds sauces to some of their tacos vs. the salsa bar idea, and you can substitute upon request. But when I just want a side of chips and salsa, hands down my go-to is Torchy's Tomatillo salsa. TORCHY'S WINS! Branding: Torchy's "damn fine tacos" and the little devil dude is cool, and memorable. It's also cleverly embedded in some locations as unique works of art (check out the ceramic mosaic and the 1st Street location). The Tacodeli Mexican dude is kind of small, not used predominantly and not so memorable. TORCHY'S WINS! Hours: why, why, why does Taco Deli close so early? Boo. TORCHY'S WINS (by default)! Atmosphere: both offer dog-friendly patio seating at most locations. Taco Deli's Spyglass location and Torchy's 1st Street location are my favorite "Austin Cool" spots. TIE. read more

It's no surprise that when the wife asks for queso, and knows that you are gonna be driving near there, that she will ask for a Tacodeli stop on the way home. It's also no surprise that while there for said queso you will order at least two different tacos to go. What might surprise you is that you have the will power to wait until you got home to eat said tacos. What's my point, in a land filled with great opportunity for delicious food, and also some awful ones, it's good to know that with certain places, the surprises that you encounter are the ones you make yourself, and not the ones you find in the bag when you get home. Another great meal, Tacodeli! !! read more

Being originally from Mexico, I'm immediately very suspicious of any Mexican restaurants, especially taco places, in Texas - where many restaurants serve hard shell things with ground meat and shredded lettuce and try to pass it for Mexican food (ditto for the yellow melted cheese with floating pieces of vegetables that Americans try to pass as Mexican food, seem to love so much and incorrectly refer to by the very generic word "queso"). Well, Taco Deli is a very satisfying taco joint, even for the suspicious Mexican. Only catch is that you have to remember to order the corn tortilla, because otherwise they'll default to flour (what the!?). Try the chicken mole, or if you go on a Tuesday, their achiote chicken tacos. Yummy. The salsas are very good, especially the Salsa Doa (green, very spicy) or if you think you can handle it, order the Habanero salsa (they keep it hidden in the back, lest they accidentally kill a customer). It's crazy spicy and it stinks just as much coming in as it does going out. A friend of mine said that salsa is bad for your fingernails... go ahead and figure that one out by yourselves. Some other comments: They don't open for dinner. The staff is friendly They hang pictures of the cooks on the walls. They get pretty crowded. read more

A local favorite that embodies Austin in many ways. Fresh farm-to-kitchen ingredients, local suppliers, unique combinations, and of course, gluten free. It's what you think of Austin... in a taco form. This location gets pretty packed on weekends but their service is fast enough that it's not a problem. And because it's Austin, you WILL see yoga moms who bring their gym bags and yoga mats into the restaurant while they eat. The tacos here are not as "heavy" as some places, which can be good or bad depending on your perspective. I have a big appetite so I only come here if I'm looking for a lighter meal. 3 tacos are enough to keep me content for about 2 hrs max. 3 tacos from Torchy's would last me longer for the same price. So yeah, you get the point. If you want fresh, you gotta pay. With that said, most of the options here are pretty solid. I'm personally a fan of all 3 of their seafood tacos and the local favorites like the Cowboy and the El Conquistadors are safe options as well. Their breakfast tacos are slightly boring. Don't get me wrong, their freshly scrambled fluffy eggs are awesome. But still, the taco as a whole is boring. I wish their hours could be longer, so that I can come here for some healthy late-night snacks... but I get it, their ingredients would probably be considered "unfresh" by then. read more

Lots of bfast taco competition in Austin, but these folks never disappoint. Otto and Jess Special dressed with doña and roja are my go to!

I have a hard time putting Taco and Deli together and imagining anything good (can you imagine a pastrami taco???) but one bite of a taco at Tacodeli will erase any misconceptions. The food is fantastic. I especially like the Cowboy Taco Plate or the Fundidos plate. While it may be a little challenging to navigate the Mopac/Burnet intersection to get to it - it's definitely worth it. This is another place that gets a large lunch crowd so a little early or a little late would be best. read more

today I went to TacoDeli for the first time. I had a Puerco Verde Taco, and a Happy Taco. They were both delicious, nice and greasy, a bit salty, but still delicious. Unfortunately, the cashier couldn't hear over the noise in the dining room or in the kitchen. Also it took twenty minutes to get the order out. It was lunch time and saturday, but still..... and the rice and beans kinda suck. But Yay Tacos! my mother did get to eat with her dog at the table outside, so I guess that is good. It was a small dog, so I wouldn't advise bringing large dogs that can jump on the tables and gobble up everybody's food. read more

I really want to like this place because they have some good flavoring going on but the price of these tacos do not even compare to the quality of them. I don't believe it's worth it. Like i said taste is good but they're sloppy tacos. I tried breakfast tacos this time thinking you can't go wrong with that right? But I got skimped on one of my tacos and the other was all smashed and all over the place. Although the mash potatoes taste good, I think cut potatoes would be better for breakfast tacos. 2 star just because of the taste. One thing to note for sure, DO NOT GO ON A SUNDAY. We ordered at 11am and my order said it would be ready at 11:40am for 4 breakfast tacos and a small queso but when we got there we had to wait an add. 12 mins. Ended up eating at 12pm, so much for breakfast. read more

TACO TOWN thats what i call this place cheap breakfast tacos creative menu good salsa I really wish this could have been my northside answer to torcys but taco deli does not quite do it. The food was good and the prices were good too. So why am i complaining? OK the queso that was on my taco was grainy like it was derived from powder. Not sure if this is the same as their regular queso but if so that sucks. I will go back, and this time have a cowboy. I also wish you could get any taco any time, unfortunately you have to wait till 11 for the specialty stuff. read more

In my opinion, the delibelly (a pork belly and avocado taco served on Wednesdays and weekends) is the best taco in Austin. Almost everything else Tacodeli does is also good, but that's in another world. In general, Tacodeli is upscale/gourmet tacos which have a small number of very good ingredients per taco. You'll get chicken mole with a bit of cilantro and a dusting of queso fresco or shrimp with cheese and poblanos. It makes a very different taco than the other places. In particular, I love to switch it up between Torchy's big tacos with lots of ingredients and Tacodeli's smaller tacos with fewer, but higher-quality ingredients. My favorite tacos are the delibelly and the chicken mole, but the hanger steak and ceviche are also way up there. The only downside to Tacodeli is that the prices are a bit steeper than most taco joints. It takes at least 3 tacos to make a meal for me and that winds up running $12 without adding a drink or chips. That's pricey for tacos, but they are *really* good tacos. read more

I love the flavor of the ingredients in the tacos and the quality of the tortillas. It's a little pricey than some other taco places but it's because you are paying for high quality ingredients. Some of the staff is very nice and friendly/helpful. Then there are some other staff members that could use some customer service skills. They need a reminder their in Austin and get a lot of visitors. Back to the food. I thought the quality of the steak meat in the tacos was amazing. The guacamole and the queso fresco were on point. I thought the Cowboy was way too spicy for my taste. If you like spicy things I would definitely recommend. Overall the food there is amazing. I will come back when I'm in Austin. They are only open for breakfast and lunch. They close at 3pm. read more

Let me start out by saying, this place has great breakfast tacos. The staff is pretty dang awesome also, very polite, all smiles, sense of humor all the while with professionalism. Their queso is pretty good, albeit I have had better. I do like the wheat tortilla option though. The quality of food is really good. The thing is, I like to eat what I pay for or better, the unexpected - Woah this is way worth more than I paid for. While Taco Deli serves some great protein and other items in their tacos, and I mean some awesome quality ingredients, the portions are soo small, they should be priced slightly lower - even being the high grade quality they use. The beef, shrimp, chicken, pork, vegetables - so fresh and so dang good - its hard to describe. The salsas here are blandish also, I am an avid fan of salsas - we are in Austin, Texas...come on - kick up that taste! The ambience is a bit to be desired as well, seems sooo... chain like. I have always heard the great controversy - Torchy's Tacos or Taco Deli. Now that I have tried the breakfast and lunch menu from Taco Deli, I can put in my opinion. Hands down without a doubt Torchys is better. read more

What I find most appealing, other than the tasty tacos, is that no matter how busy they are they take the time to put your plate together with some pride. The staff is friendly and hip and seem intelligent beyond the job at hand. Each day of the week features a couple different tacos. I love the Dellibelly on Wednesday and the Ceviche on Friday. I love that they use vital farms fresh eggs and that they sustainably source their ingredients. Delicious and healthy options for all...even with food sensitivities..there are easy modifications. Really good... I ordered the Sirloin Egg and Cheese bfast taco and the pork belly special they had. Woah the meat was tasty. Well seasoned, well cooked... not dry, great texture. The flavors were balanced and not over eggy, not over cheesy. The pork belly was cooked nicely as the fat was rendered down so it was a nice balance of juicy fattiness, and still meaty and not overly greasy. The corn tortillas were also really nice. I've tried a hand full of times to check this place out but the hours are odd and I always show up after they close. I was starving and everything on their menu sounded delicious. I decided on the most popular Otto( refried black beans, avocado, and lots of the most delicious CRISPY! bacon) and the Frontera Fondido(portebellas, Monterrey Jack cheese, with sautéed poblanos & onion) Man! I am getting hungry again just thinking about it!! Needless to say, it was scrumptious! I was surprised at the small size (compared to Torchy's for example) but it was plenty filling. Bison tacos? Catfish tacos? Pork belly tacos? Scallop tacos??? It's TOO MUCH!! My taco senses are overloaded! Has my quest to find a worthy adversary to the indomitable Torchy's Tacos finally come to fruition? For their part, Taco Deli has not made things easy for me; but alas, quests are not meant to be easy. First, they cleverly designed their website to be ABSOLUTELY USELESS; very non-mobile and non-Firefox friendly. Second, they stealthily placed their North location into some sorta Bermuda Triangle of navigation. Follow the Yelp map and you will be summarily FOILED (they must protect the scallop tacos from the unworthy masses)! Forced to regroup, we followed a tip from Steve B.'s Yelp review and finally found our way to the taco promised land. Now the hard part; which of the dozens of unique yummy-sounding tacos will be chosen to do battle? I went with the Bison, the Mojo Talopia, and the Catfish (curiosity got the better of me). But wait! Yet another challenge. Which of the 4 unique sauces will tempt me? Quickly eliminating the Mild and the Habanero (duh!), I grabbed the Medium (pretty good), and the creamy green spicy "Dona" sauce. The dialogue went like this: The Wife: "watch out, the Dona sauce is supposed to be really hot"; Your Hero: "wow, this sauce is really good..(short delay), OUCH!". The tacos (see photo) were all pretty good. Head and shoulders above most, but ultimately failing to reach the lofty pinnacle set by Torchy's. My favorite of the 3 turned out to be the Catfish; but eat it quickly, before the river of sauce\grease turns your whole basket into mush. The Bison was also a worthy contender. Will I be back? Yes, often. Is the Dona sauce my new favorite? Hell yes! (and ouch!) Will I ever choose Taco Deli over Torchy's? Nope! ... And so the quest continues. read more
