I tried Taco John after a fairly lengthy hiatus. Ordered the Chicken Taco Salad with house dressing, bean burrito, and taco. The taco salad was a little disappointing. Very heavy on the lettuce and could use something extra like rice to enhance more. The taco shell, which looked delicious, was surprisingly awful. It tasted like it was fried in burnt oil. Completely inedible. The taco and bean burrito were very good. Couldn't believe how much meat was in the taco versus places like Taco Bell. So much better here. Also really like the quality of the tortilla for the bean burrito. Both were winners. The service was really good as well. They welcomed me in, and said goodbye. Also very helpful with the dressing selection for the salad. This was to go, but the restaurant was very clean and well maintained. Not a lot of people, so very quiet. Overall, I would still place this pretty high for fast food Mexican, but they need to fix the taco salad shell. Yikes! read more

I eat here pretty often since it's reasonably good, cheap, and fast enough that I can squeeze in a walk at Walnut Grove Park on my lunch hour. Nutrition: Oil and salt galore. Flavor: Mostly salty, but good. This location seems to change their fryer oil regularly, so I don't encounter the "burnt oil" taste I get at some other Taco Johns. Service: They've always been friendly to me. Atmosphere: Plenty of seating. I like their music (mostly contemporary Christian). Cleanliness: Tables and bathrooms and service areas are kept clean. As with most TJs, the receipt usually comes out with tater tot oil on it, making it icky to put in my pocket or receipt file. Funny observation: They always seem shocked, I say SHOCKED, when I decline ranch dressing on my taco salad. I believe a taco salad should only have salsa. read more

Stopped by the drive thru on the way home. Tried a spicy grilled chicken burrito from their value menu and it was surprisingly good. It was spicy, but not too spicy. I also ordered their nacho chips and cheese. The cheese was pretty bland and the chips seemed overly salty. They didn't seem like fresh chips like they had in the past, they were more bulk chips you wouldn't get at the store. I have to say they were disappointing. I asked for light ice in my drink, but they filled it 3/4 full of ice. I really shouldn't expect too much for fast food, but I would have been better off stopping in Chipotle for the cost verses quality. read more

I hate giving poor reviews but I seriously. When the hours of operation are until 10pm for drive thru that should mean that they can let customers order until that point. I showed up at the drive through at 9:54 and sat at the ordering menu for 4 minutes waiting to order and nobody came on the intercom. I pulled around to the window thinking maybe they couldn't hear me. I was clearly seen and ignored and after sitting there for a couple of minutes, the what I assume was the manager simply shook her head and gestures they weren't open. At least give the courtesy to not waste my time. read more

The location is right next to my house. My order is incorrect every time. I have talked to the manager and the owner and still there is no change to the standards. I told myself I wouldn't go back again. After a month I tried again today. No sour cream that we ordered, no straws, and there is dirt in my cup (probably from Being dropped on the floor and being used anyway). Please take my advice, go elsewhere. read more

We have been going to this Taco John's location for years and have loved it. However, today our experience was beyond horrible. We spent $27.00 only to get tacos that had minimal filling, broken and stale shells. The potato ole's tasted as though they were days old, cold, soggy and spongey. Disgusting! We took a taco in an showed it to the manager and her response was sorry, but we have had to reduce portions and increase prices. Really???? That's how you want to keep customers??? Sadly, this has ruined it for ALL Taco John's as far as we are concerned. We will no longer dine at any Taco John's, ever. read more

Normally, I'm not a partaker of fast-food, but was convinced into trying Taco John's street tacos. Never again. Our dietitian (of all people) would always go here and grab me something to eat. This is not authentic Mexican but it's waaaay better than Taco Bell. Don't expect great Mexican restaurants in the Midwest. I'd always get beef tacos and Potato Oles with sour cream for dipping. The tacos are ok but the Potato Oles is where it's at! I have to say Im usually am not a big review person. Today I ate at this store. The tables had 6 feet social distance even though they don't have to. Each one was labeled clean to sit at or not for use. Employees managers all wore mask which is better than some FF. Big guy took order he needs a little training. Food was hot fresh and quick in my opinion. I ordered a Combo number 4 which was cheaper than Taco Bell $5.00 for Taco Bravo Oles and drink. I guess it has a Thursday Taco Bravo meal special. I guess they dont have condiment bar anymore but gave me options. All and all one of the better visits in the neighborhood. I will be back Thanks Taco John's for a great experience. read more

Absolutely disgusting. These are supposed to be the steak street tacos. They were completely soggy and there was no way to pull them apart. There was also a lot of liquid inside of the aluminum foil. Pretty delicious food and good service. Not a fancy restaurant of course, but inexpensive and big portions. Friendly staff as well.

First off, this rating would've been even less but They did have good service. It was a relief to see they were wearing gloves and masks. However, unfortunately the food was just not up to par -- I'm sorry but not even close. Not to mention, their menu at the drive through was not thorough and complete. They didn't have a lot of items that were listed on their website. The nachos were stale, cheese was hard, ground beef was dry and the toppings that there were played more as a garnish than an actual ingredient. They also skimped on the grilled burrito. It was pretty much eating a rolled up dry flour tortilla. There were maybe like three pieces of beef inside of at all. The taco salad bowl was completely flavorless and once again skimped on the toppings which were subpar anyway. Will not be coming back. We ended up not being able take down the food bc it was so bad. I guess this place a yet but I'm Sticking to Taco Bell. read more

Excellent service and the friendliest management and crew that a fast food establishment could offer. They serve real, freshly cooked ingredients, as opposed to Taco Bell. When craving some fast mexican-ish food, I prefer Taco John's over the Bell. In fact, it is one of the better fast food options in town. Let me emphasize that I am referring to fast food not fast casual. While tasty, this place doesn't compare to other higher priced options like Chipotle or Qdoba. read more

Most of my visits here are during breakfast, as I'm not a fan of TJ's taco meat. But I am a pretty big fan of their Potato Ole breakfast scramblers, and their breakfast burritos. And let's not forget the nacho cheese sauce. The service I get at this location has always been pretty decent, and my order has always been accurate. It's pretty salty, but I'm sure my choice of bacon on everything doesn't help the situation. One thing that always stands out for me, though, is the drive thru garbage can. It may not seam like a big deal, but it's the last thing I see of the restaurant as I'm leaving, and it is ALWAYS stuffed full. I have never seen it any other way. I don't know who's responsible for emptying it, night closers or morning openers, but it's never done when I swing through between 8-8:30AM. It's gross, and I think of it every time I am deciding where to get my breakfast. If that never gets emptied, what else is being overlooked? Otherwise, the food and drive thru employees are pretty great. read more

While I have been a customer of this franchise since the 70's, unfortunately the one I ate at the most (along Center street at 89th) is long gone. Good news is that Taco Johns is still the same and very good. I love their soft shell taco's, and also the Taco Bravo. My wife likes the Ole's & a mix of their cheese dip with some of their mild sauce mixed in. And they have fresh Pico on the sauce bar and several very good sauces from mild to very hot. They even still do Taco Tuesday and Softshell Saturday. Very good food for the money and if nothing else, very nostalgic. You cannot go wrong with this place. read more
