Great little spot on George Street up from the heavily trodden tourist favorites that if it wasn't for Kyra, I wouldn't have tried. As someone else posted, the red sangria is refreshing especially on a warm Florida evening. They have a unique drink menu that uses vodka and gin that is produced locally in St Augustine. The wings are flavored with datil pepper BBQ sauce but don't worry, they aren't too spicy but just in case ask for sauce on the side. Our service was excellent, she continually checked on us,was attentive to our drinks which is a plus to me. I don't like to have to ask for refills, a good server can see if my glass is empty. The prices are a little steep on the food menu for the locals but given it is a specialty spot, I can understand. If you'd like a quaint little spot to sip a refreshing drink and catch a local performer,then add this place to your list. read more

This was a very good place to go eat if you're staying in town. The atmosphere and the Baja tacos were the best part. The two sides (beans and rice) it came with, weren't that good. The salsa was delightful and different. We were walking down St. George in search of food after a horrible dinner experience elsewhere (Centro, and the review of that is posted on Yelp as well) where I couldn't even eat. We have walked past Taberna del Caballo a thousand times, but I guess I assumed it was just touristy. I couldn't have been more wrong. From the moment we walked in we were treated wonderfully. The music and atmosphere were great, and our waiter was awesome. But best of all was the fabulous, reasonably priced food. We started with the Spanish Tapas platter. I ordered the small, and when it came out, it was so huge my husband was convinced there was a mistake and we'd received the large. We were thrilled when the check confirmed that it was the $10.00 version. A bargain for sure--chock-full of luscious Spanish salamis, apricots, figs, walnuts, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, excellent cheese with a balsamic reduction drizzle, and crispy baguette toasts. The cocktails were amazing, including my new favorite summer cocktail, the Old Spaniard. Aged rum, prosecco, mint, triple sec, and lime. So, so good! For dinner I had the MTR burger, described on the menu as "A 1/2 lb. Proprietary Blend of Brisket, Short Rib, and Chuck with Crispy Serrano Ham, Lettuce, Garlic Aioli, and Choice of Cheese on Toasted Brioche Bun". I have to say, I think they managed to beat Moxie Kitchen + Cocktails here, which until now has had my favorite burger. This thing was to die for. Juicy, garlicky, smoky, meaty...YUM. lol, this is hilarious, we were ushered into this place by the very handsome guide that we werep listening to in the Colonial Quarters tour because in Florida it rains everyday. so we started with the garlic wings sweet Jesus! That sauce was awesome. Just a slightly sweet garlicky warm flavor and the avocado sauce that accompanied it was a bowl full of creamy buttery heaven. Absolutely awful - take it from a local. There are so many wonderful restaurants in St. Augustine and I can assure you that this is not one of them. We waited to be seated only to be left to track down a hostess and be told to seat ourselves. Wait for food wasn't too long unfortunately. Guacamole tasted old and looked slimy. Chips were far past stale. Then the meals arrived and to our dismay the fish was rubbery and cold in the fish tacos and the steak in the burrito was barely edible mystery meat that was also very cold - the cheese on the burrito was not even melted. Thankfully the waitress grabbed her manager who apologized but was still snippy with us. We couldn't believe they still charged us for the drink and guac after such a terrible experience - we even heard a large table next to us expressing the same issue. First and last time I make that mistake - luckily Cousteau's waffle bar saved the night. read more

Got a BOGO deal on admission thru a Local Flavor website so I was stoked about that since we also had to pay admissions to go to the Fountain of Youth, Castillo de San Marcos and the St. Augustine Lightouse. I didn't realize that the place is only open during the tour times and as the ticket office lady explained, it is not a living museum, but rather you go and take a 45 minute guided tour to see everything. So we had about an hour to spare before the next tour started so we decided to eat at one of the taverns for lunch. We ate at the British pub and ordered the fish and chips. They were recently voted for best fish and chips. I must say, I have to agree with whomever awarded them this because it was the best fish and chips I've ever had. Even better than the fish and chips I had when we were in London. The batter on the fish is outstanding. It's super crispy and lightly seasoned. The fish was moist and flaky and could not have been cooked better. I ate mine with malted vinegar and used the tartar for the chips. My husband is not a vinegar type of guy and grew up in New England so he was all about the tartar sauce. He agreed too that this was the best fish and chips he'd ever had. After lunch we met Grimm the tour guide inside the quarter and on to the tour we went. It was a great tour, Grimm was really funny and knowledgeable and made learning fun. At the end of the tour we were welcome to hang around and go back to spots we wanted to explore more so we did. It was a rather severe disappointment to us when we saw that Taberna del Gallo (http://www.yelp.com/biz/taberna-del-gallo-saint-augustine#hrid:DGtonm_b7WL3VQ2fHjo5MQ) was no more. It was a favorite of ours, in its attempts to remain somewhat period-authentic with no artificial lighting or visible electrical items of any kind (I remember even the cash register was hidden behind a towel when not in use). Lit entirely by candlelight when the sun went down, we found the tiny little bar irresistible when we went out looking for a drink during our visits to St. Augustine. Taberna del Caballo is what became of Taberna del Gallo (I guess they didn't want to change the name TOO much), and the miniscule bar has been opened up by removing the separation between it and the place next door. They are now a full restaurant, with the bar operating pretty much as it did previously except with quite a bit less effort going toward period authenticity. The additional rooms are naturally lit as before, with large, low openings in the walls for light and breeze. Decoration is sparse but the overall feeling is still cozy and enjoyable, with the two additional rooms holding four tables each. This offers a great feeling of privacy when you have the only occupied table in a room. There is a large outdoor area as well. We only stayed for a drink, since we hadn't planned on food being served there. It's a nice looking place, worth checking out as you're passing through. We'll probably check out the food next time. It's lacking some of what made Taberna del Gallo so special to us, but this new incarnation is nice in its own right. read more

On a busy Saturday night, after arriving in St Augustine, most restaurants around St George St had a wait so we were relieved to find that this place could seat us right away. Things got off to a rough start with photo-copied paper menus in such a blurry, small print, we couldn't read them. Server offered no alternative but we found menu online on our own. We ordered chips and salsa and our drinks, then two entrees. Chips came w/no salsa or salt. We sat there quite awhile, trying to get our server's attention to let her know. Once she was made aware, she brought both, but with no apology. My cocktail arrived about half way through the chips and salsa. Food was average, at best. Our dear server really was struggling. Table next to us never go their coffee and ended up just asking for the check. If I lived in St Augustine, I would not return to this restaurant. read more

First time in St. Augustine, my wife and I looked at the menus of several places, but this one called our attention. The prices seemed right and the restaurant looked good, too. The place had plenty of beautiful plants that we could appreciate from the entrance and there were more around the outside sitting area. Moreover, there were a few Spanish paintings inside and temperature was a little cooler, which was very refreshing. We had passed by another restaurant that was on a second floor, where we thought we were going to melt. In addition, the server was great, we had gotten to la Taberna del Caballo quite late, so she told us in a polite manner that we had about 8 minutes to order anything we wanted (food or drinks). We were very happy to have a table and have the opportunity to order dinner, we have been to restaurants where they turn people away when they come so close to the closing time. Either way, our server was friendly and attentive, her name is Kelsey J. We are so grateful! And we were not expecting our chicken sandwiches to be so good, specially the bread! Had the Baja Fish Tacos which had Flounder as the catch of the day. The fish was extremely well seasoned and the side of rice and beans was also well done. The chicken club was huge and well worth the price. The chicken bowl was a total miss though, no flavor on it whatsoever. The chips and salsa were delicious. The outside seating was beautiful and there are several instagrammable areas. The service was extremely slow during peak time but the server kept checking on us and apologizing so she made it all worthwhile. read more

This place takes you back to the colonial years, located in the St Augustine Historic District ,you are surround with many shops and restaurant but once your inside you forget the year your in. We were sited in the outside area but the entire place is completely lit with candlelight inside and out witch makes it so romantic and cozy. We went in for some Sangria and then decided to order the Plato Del Capitan, which is a platter with a variety of cheese and meats also warm Cuban bread cut in slices, perfect for two to share. The Sangria was very tasty and came perfect with our platter. The downfall to this place is the service. The hostess was very quick and sitting us down. but the waitress would disappear for long periods of times. I can tell you if the service would of been better we would of probably stayed for a couple of more drinks. Good brews like Stella and Estrella are available on tap and several others are available in the bottle. The hamburgers looked really good, though we had just eaten lunch so we have only been here for drinks. I love that they have the "Shut the box" game to provide some small entertainment and the bar staff is friendly and efficient. The board outside advertised the best sangria in town, so I opted for a glass of white sangria. While it was better than others nearby, I would not grant the "best" around title. It was very fruity, a little too sweet, but refreshing. Yes there are "banos" behind the bar in an open courtyard, but I do not get why that is the featured photo. I am a Cuban sandwich junkie. So I tried their's. It was very good with two major complaints: The pickles were minimal and it needed mustard in a bad way. Everything else was excellent in preparation and flavor. It just needed stronger condiments. I would try it again, but would ask for extra of both. I am pretty sure that would make it the best in town. I will compliment the goat cheese appetizer. That was excellent and I would recommend it in a heartbeat. The spinach dip was pretty much flavorless. Moving on to the drinks, the dark and stormy was downright addictive. Service was excellent as Carrie was on point, knowledgeable and friendly. I recently visited this restaurant with my family. We were a party of 6 with two children. We arrived around 6:00 and the place wasn't overly busy or crowded. Once we sat down the tables did begin to fill up. Once we ordered our food a couple tables next to us ordered their food. We waited over an hour and a half for our food. At least two tables that ordered after us got their food first. We complained and the manager apologized but the food was still delayed. We asked for the food for the kids to be brought out first and since they ordered one chicken taco and a cheese quesadilla figured it would be easy. It still took over 10 minutes from that point. The manager did take 50% off the bill but that was too little too late. The waitress couldn't help what the kitchen does but didn't seem too concerned about the delay. She basically avoided us. We finally got the food and were out by after 8:00. I won't be going back. read more

Overall: Fun, colonial tavern atmosphere with good food and delicious cocktails. Food: The food here surprised me. The tavern sits on the main drag of historic St Augustine, and right next to the colonial park. I really expected bland, touristy type food. Boy was I wrong! Our group shared their garlic wings, shrimp and grits, taberna chopped salad, and datil bbq flatbread. All were delicious. The garlic wing were flavorful with just a touch of heat. The shrimp and grits were delicious and in a non-traditional, creamy "red-eye gravy." The datil bbq flatbread would make a good appetizer or light lunch. The BBQ pork was well seasoned and slightly spicy; paired with the pickles onion and arugula made it perfect. The salad was refreshing and cool. The avocado dressing was light and I liked the addition of kalamata olives. Drinks: Their ginger beer is homemade, if you like ginger and rum - definitely order their Dark and Stormy. The Old Spaniard is good, but it's very much a "martini" type drink - so be prepared to a strong kick. The Queen Anne is good for a sweeter drink and the St. Augustine Mule is refreshing. Service: Service is on the slow side, but it's a very busy location, and we were also their late (9pm) so it was not unexpected. It was very busy when we're were there. Atmosphere: We were here after dark and it definitely has an old world, colonial feel. So much of the lighting is lantern and candlelight that it feels authentic - like you have been transported back to colonial St Augustine. It's a bit loud, and there is live music, but it's a tavern so you come for that reason. It's casual, and pirates are welcome. We sat outside and ordered two red house wines and a pan con tomate (flat breat with tomato sauce ) which tasted a Lil bland and looked more like a tiny pizza.. I do local tours downtown and I do bar crawls. This is one of m favorite places to take people because it right on St. George in the Colonial Quarter. They have such a relaxed vibe. You can literally hide in one of the corners to have drinks and chill. They have the best sangria in town. Seriously, its been voted on. It is on the sweeter side but very delicious.
