My hubs ordered the black pork and I got the mushroom risotto (so delicious but too large a portion so I did not finish!) And our kids split the curry vegetables and coconut rice. Don't let the front of the building fool you. This place is amazing. Its unique, funky interior leads to a fantastic dining experience with excellent service. Food was served promptly but not rushed. We had a table of ten with no leftovers, not a scrap left. The goat cheese pear appetizer melted in your mouth. The mushrooms with sweet potatoes was the star of the table. The shrimp risotto was divine. The chicken saltimbocca wrapped in prosciutto was outstanding. I would recommend this restaurant 10 out of 10. read more

Unique counterculture-themed Portugese restaurant tucked away on a historic street. Immediately upon entering, I felt like I was entering a time capsule for all things artsy and rebellious. The entire place is decorated floor to ceiling with copies of old newspapers and magazine covers detailing old Portugese debutantes, music records, and political cartoons. The narrow entryway has a few tables for solo diners and couples, but an even smaller hallway in the back leads to a much more spacious but equally dim dining room. The architecture is older than the art itself, and everything seems vintage - including the nude blue male statue in the corner above our dining table and mismatched wooden chairs. Don't fret if you're in a group, they accommodated a party of 10 across from us. Service is super friendly but slow-paced in Portugese fashion, you're expected to savor each dish with lengthy conversation and drink. Portions are as generous as the service. The most up-to-date menu is located online, in English too. Our favorites were the gigantic Seafood Soup and Codfish Cakes. If they were available I'd buy a box of the Codfish Cakes over the more customary Pasteles de Nata in a heartbeat. Bathrooms are located in the aforementioned narrower hallway behind a sliding door, with a common sink area and individual male/female rooms. Everything is clean, yet decor still runs true to the overall theme. Highly recommend if you're in the area and looking for a traditional meal with a twist. As we were tired from a travel day, we were happy to try this restaurant recommended by staff from our hotel. The walk was just a short block away. Thanks to another yelper's recommendation, I knew to order the duck. It was as good as described and I would definitely go back for the duck again the next time in Lisbon! A lovely hide away Taverna off the tourist trap. We showed up with no reservation but, no problem in accommodating us despite having 80 covers tonight. An eclectic mix of decoration and art work makes this restaurant feel cosy and welcoming. I started with the ceviche followed by the pig cheeks. The ceviche was lacking another zing of line but otherwise tasty. The pig cheeks was a hearty dish but again needed a touch more seasoning. Would I go back again? Of course. Went there due to good reviews. Owner or bartender (?) was surprised that we came without reserving a table to such establishment. Service did not go beyond taking our order and bringing the food. Last night we happened upon this place looking for late meal but I must recommend that you plan a visit if you enjoy incredibly prepared dishes. We started with salmon maki...it was so amazing! We ordered two entrees to share: the mushroom risotto was so creamy and hearty on a cold night while the sea bass over green pea purée was a delicate balance of flavors. We also enjoyed a bottle of wine and were provided advice on where to source nice vino locally. The lime ginger cheesecake was a wonderful finish as it was light and flavorful to end our experience. We found this restaurant on yelp and decided to try it. Almost didn't go in based on the looks, but as we were looking at the menu, the owner stepped out and invited us in. It is a small, eclectic restaurant, but we were immediately seated in a charming little dining room, and immediately greeted by our waiter. We shared fresh grilled sardine bruschetta, which was outstanding. My wife had mushroom risotto and I had pig cheeks. Some of the best food I have had the dining area was somewhat cramped, but that only added to the ambience. I don't think there were two chairs that looked alike. Came here for dinner right after landing in Lisbon per recommendation from our Airbnb host and it was delicious. Just a 5 minute walk from our flat which was a huge plus. I hadn't slept for the past 24 hrs so I was barely functioning but the food was so fresh and a great meal before I passed out lol we arrived at 9pm on a sat and there was a table available, which I was very thankful for bc I was starving. It has a mellow vibe and is quite dark inside which I appreciated. we ordered the sea bass and shrimp risotto. I think any seafood dish is safe in Portugal, and ours were definitely amazing. Thank you Yelp for recommending this fabulous little neighborhood restaurant! For starters, a salad with greens, figs and prosciutto, dressed with balsamic vinegar; octopus bruschetta. For mains: a fragrant, rich fish soup in a bread bowl with prawns and shrimp so sweet you'd think they were lobster; and cod fish on a bed of turnip greens, olive oil and garlic, served with a side of potato, cabbage and egg ("old clothes") For dessert, chocolate cups- chocolate shell, chocolate mousse and either port or Madeira. And everything was was downed with perfect white Portuguese wine. Amazing! We arrived at 6:15 pm, and were told the restaurant didn't open til 7. Pm, but they invited us in for a glass of wine while we checked out the menus - that was really nice By the way, when we were leaving at 8:15, this small, intimate space was packed, with people waiting outside- so while we were early, and lucky, if you dine at a more typical time, reservations would be a good idea! The staff here was incredibly friendly and helpful, a group effort. They are also proficient in English and several other languages- which is good since my Spanish is passable but my Portuguese is non- existent. We can't praise them enough! Beautiful hole in the wall on a street with multiple nice restaurants. The atmosphere is beautiful with rock walls, vintage pictures. I got the octopus (10/10) and my partner got the fish soup which was well seasoned (8/10). The olive, bread and fish cakes were good. The waitress was very kind and gave us a selection of wines to try. Will definitely return here! Only thing is I'm being nit picky is the temperature in the slim dining area is quite warm and stuffy. It felt like we were at an uncle's house, homey and warm. You know, where you get stuffed with food made with a lot of love. I can't remember the name of the appetizer we had, but there were six little quiche like tarts - delish! For the mains, we ordered the fish soup in a homemade bread bowl, roasted duck leg and the grilled octopus. Definitely get the fish soup!! Not gonna lie, I was a little hesitant on this one, but the server insisted that it was a must-order, and he was right. The soup was comforting, and not "fishy" at all. Perfect local restaurant. Small only 5 tables but very homey. Owner greeted us so warmly it was like visiting a neighbor. For apps we had codfish cakes at the owners recommendation which were surprisingly refined and delicious. The fish stew in a homemade bread bowl drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette was a work of art. We found this petite restaurant near where we were staying. Located off the main tourist area and has a quaint atmosphere. The menu is small with great service. We shared a sardine and pepper entree which was fresh and flavoursome. For mains we had the cod and grilled octopus with baked potato, both dishes were rustic and stunning. The owner took time to help us to stand the history behind these meals, which made the eating experience so much more. Stumbled on Anti-Dantas while schlepping back to the hotel after visiting the castle. It was relatively early in the evening and, like many other restaurants, they were just setting up for the evening... The funky interior and intimate space were inviting as well as the reasonably priced eclectic menu. The owner saw us hanging at the door, wondering if we were too early, and came over, engaging me in French... Happily I know enough French to ask if Philippe spoke English, which he did also. Funny - I look French! The menu is good solid Portuguese food but Philippe does it his way, improving it or using ingredients that are not traditionally used together. I think this is why Philipe called the taberna "Anti-Dantas" after the "Manifesto Anti-Dantas", José de Almada Negreiros' rejection of Júlio Dantas' own rejection of modernism. We decided to have more starters and share a main, along with beer and wine. Had olives, the fig and ham salad and both cod fish-cakes (traditional and modernistic). All very tasty. As we worked on the starters our main arrived - Fish soup in rustic bread - this is very tasty fish soup in a firm boule loaf, laced with thick balsamic. Dessert was two orders of chocolate ganache in chocolate shells, one soaked with Port, the other with Madeira. All very very good. A great taste of Portuguese food! read more

The vibe is like eating at someone's home table. Very friendly and helpful. We had the octopus, the tuna and the lamb chop. All came with sides complementing the main offering. All tasted excellent and were cooked perfectly, except the lamb which was over cooked. If your coming from the US or elsewhere where you are used to substantial chops these were petite.
