This place is tucked away just out of sight, around the corner from a theater and less than a block away from the popular Avenida Liberdade. Stumbled on this place when searched for a popular steak sandwich only to discover this spot is a meat lover and seafood paradise! The variety of seafood rice dishes are large and perfect for sharing. The steak is served on a board, with fries and a small salad (which is barely a salad). I had a great dinner here. A Gina is located in an odd nook to the side of a theater and dance club (?). Some sort of venues w quite a bit of music that wasn't at all unwelcome during the meal. I started w the croquettes and a bottle of vino verde recommended by my server. The croquettes were filled w a pleasant sausage and, interestingly, were served on a bed of ketchup and mustard. Loved A Gina! We sat in the covered outdoor area with cute greenery and fun lights decorated throughout. We ordered the berry red sangria which was delicious. They gave us bread as a starter and we could also add a meat + cheese board to go with it. I got the grilled lamb chops that comes we with a salad and fries. Walked to restaurant from our hotel on the beautiful Av. da Liberdade. We kept following the arrows on buildings pointing the way; keep going, don't give up! Eventually you are rewarded and find your treasure!! We were seated immediately. I had soup and the Sea Bass. The whole fish was split down the middle and split apart. There are bones so be careful! The parts of the fish that were exposed to the flame were cooked nicely and had a nice grilled quality. Under that, the rest of the fish was more moist and less interesting to me. So everybody raved about this place and told us to go but be prepared because she got big portions, etc. But when we got there the server was extremely helpful. She helped us pick out a nice wine and we were with another couple so we each shared their chicken dinner. It comes with a very small salad and french fries. You have to love a place that is tucked away in a small forgotten plaza, but is worth the effort to find as the food was great, the service terrific and everyone is so friendly you feel like you are having dinner at someone's home. Lucky for me this place was located right behind my hotel so on the day I arrived in Lisbon and lacked the energy to wander too far, I saw this place from my rooftop and decided to give it a try. If you go- you may want to make a reservation as they were able to accommodate us as we went early (around 6pm) but by the time we left, there were people waiting for tables. There is a cute patio area but it was cool on the night we were there so we sat inside. Lucky for us our table was located right in front of the kitchen where we could watch the husband and wife team serve up some amazing food. Know that the chacuterie plate that they put on the table as well as the bread comes at a charge so if you don't want to eat that, wave it away and they will take it. The servers speak very good English (our server spoke American) and when I asked him where he learned to speak it, he told me he watch a lot of American movies with subtitles. Fascinating! The table wine is cheap and the food was delicious! We ordered a couple of their kabobs, one beef and one seafood (which was basically squid or octopus) They came hanging from a kind of hook and were served with rice, crispy potatoes and some tomatoes. Really good. We also had dessert which was a piece of cake recommended by our server. Also delicious! Our entire bill for all that food and drink was only 60.50E which was a really good deal. We weren't sure what our experience would be when we went to A Gina. We were seated at a large communal-type table. None of us spoke or could read Portuguese. We were a little concerned that we'd be ignored or treated contemptuously, you know, "those Americans." When the server arrived, nothing was further from the truth. She looked a bit tired but the young woman spoke pretty decent English and actually took the time to explain items on the menu. The food, pretty good! Priced in Euros, seemed rather expensive on the menu but when the gigantic portions showed up on our table, we realized that we were getting really good value. Homemade cooking and huge portions ! We loved our first night dinner at A Gina's. A bit tricky to find location and if you get early enough you can do outside seating and if not inside is just as authentic. The octopus was a full octopus and the Portuguese style made it amazing. never leave a good review unless you're certain about a place and I think that's why there are so many good for reviews in general. Please read the postscript to my third visit here. I noticed that many of the poor reviews cited an under-performing and unwilling waiter and I believe he still there, but fortunately I did not have to deal with him. The server on my first visit was average by Portuguese standards, the second was probably one of the most extraordinary servers I've ever seen in my life. He was a frenetic powerhouse of energy, too much so, attentive to everyone. Flirtatious to those in need, assistive with tottering old ladies and he possessed a good gift for BS with the guys. If the food was so-so, certainly not bad, the service today was uplifting and added a star to my rating. It was extraordinary. Certainly my two visits here suggest a place that is worth a visit if you need a low-key and relaxed atmosphere to unwind. THIRD VISIT: I should never come back to a particular place after a good experience.. Steak was tough, the same waiter had crashed and was a jerk and the closure mechanism for the front door was evidently broken since it slammed incessantly. My waiter was the worst offender, though many customers gingerly closed the door behind them. Important lesson in Europe: never tip because people here really don't care about their jobs. Only tip if they've done extraordinary service. Fortunately, I'll leave Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde behind. One final note. He offered me bread and butter and did not inform me that I was going to be charged. now I wonder if this is the same waiter that was frequently mentioned in numerous pie reviews. He was very friendly and helpful, but overall the service was ok. It was pretty empty since we had an early dinner (around 6 or 7), but it started to fill up as it got later. We were a party of 8, so we sat on the outside patio. The restaurant has a nice exterior decor (can't say anything about the inside since I didn't see it). I ordered the golden sea bream. It was good, but a lil salty. For dessert, we had flan. The flan is not a flan (might be Portuguese flan? I wouldn't know). It was much tougher than the flan that I think of, but the taste was good. Great choice of hamburgers in a nice cozy environment. I've been here twice. First time I tried the codfish burger. Good though a bit salty. This time I had the Alheira burger (new on the menu).
