In Lisboa Portugal for 3 days, through a YouTuber we found this tapas place 12 minutes away from our Hotel Mundail. Through narrow and hilly streets we finally sat down. Upfront was told no credit card. Which is ok for us. A friendly waitress carried a black board with today's menu on it. Lots to choose from. I assume they change their menu often whatever is fresh that day. Delightful taverna serving up phenomenal Portuguese food on a rotating menu in an adorable, cozy space! I came to Rua das Flores for dinner a few days after Christmas and immediately fell in love with the bustling, hole-in-the-wall energy. There are no reservations, so you should aim to arrive just around when they open; we got pretty lucky and only had a ~15-minute wait even though we got there around 7:30. As we were waiting, our host also kindly reminded us that they are cash only and pointed out the nearest ATM if needed; I would recommend having at least 20-30 euros per person -- the dishes are each 10-20 euros each and pretty small, so you probably need 1.5-2.5 dishes per person. Once you do manage to get inside with cash in hand, though, the restaurant is gorgeous. We were seated at a small table in the back, right next to the server's kiosk where they pause after grabbing dishes from the kitchen to add utensils, etc. It was super fun to be so close to all the action, and we also got plenty of inspiration from the beautiful, mouthwatering dishes coming out of the kitchen. They bring around a lovely chalkboard menu, which includes about 10-15 dishes of the day; they only have menus in Portuguese, but the servers are super helpful and are ready to translate / explain everything. My mom and I decided to split three dishes between the two of us. I would recommend getting four or five for two people -- we didn't feel ravished by the end, but we could definitely still eat a bit more. Everything on their menu is also incredible, so it's certainly not challenging to pick a couple more dishes to try out! The dishes also came out as they were prepared, so you can easily start with a smaller number of dishes and add more if you feel like you need to. We decided to triple down on the seafood and got the miso scallops, fried squid sandwich, and ginger garlic shrimp. The miso scallops were some of the most incredible scallops I've ever had -- the scallops were SO tender, and they were packed with a delightful earthiness and saltiness from the miso. The four scallops are served with a bed of seaweed in the center, which is also tasty and really amps up the flavor of the sea; do be careful as you sample the seaweed, though, as it's all resting on a bed of salt, so the bottom layer will be extra salty. Next came the fried squid sandwich, which was probably the one and only time I've LOVED a sandwich. The squid was fried to golden perfection, with such an incredible crunch on the outside and tender, slightly chewy squid on the inside. It was paired with mayo and a few other sauces that have escaped me, which amped up the flavor and also helped prevent the sandwich from feeling too dry. What really impressed me, though, was the bread; the squid came sandwiched between two slices of Portuguese cornbread, which were slightly sweet, slightly salty, and simultaneously both soft and pillow, as well as strong and hearty enough to hold the sandwich together. It was truly a work of magic. Our last dish was the ginger garlic shrimp, which came with six plump, tender shrimps poached in a lovely ginger, garlic, and chili sauce, and topped with toasted coconut flakes for a bit of a crunch. The shrimp were phenomenal, and I loved the added texture and hint if sweetness and fruitiness that the coconut offered. All in all, can't recommend Taberna da Rua das Flores enough! So delicious, with a mix of both traditional and fusion Portuguese dishes, and such great vibes. We spent our last dinner in Lisbon at this restaurant and I am so happy we came! When we went on a Wednesday night, we lucked out with being able to get a table for three right away. The restaurant was pretty busy throughout the night, but I think it was just timing. The food was fantastic and there's something for everyone on the menu. We lean more pescatarian/vegetarian, so we didn't even try the meat dishes and we still left feeling full and satisfied. I really like the umami flavors used throughout, especially in the scallops. Service was great initially, as they come over an explain the chalkboard menu and make recommendations on what to get. Towards the end, it was a bit hard to track down our waiter and get the bill. I'd chalk this up to a cultural thing though, since Americans are usually the ones trying to rush instead of relax. The ambiance is charming and great for a cozy dinner. We came here on our first night in Lisbon. We arrived 10min prior to 7pm, waited till someone came over to ask about us. Luckily for us, the wait was only 10min, we walked up the hill to the small square there, walked back, and we were seated promptly at 7pm. (There's another review saying they had two seatings, 5:30 or 7:30, that's not the case. You put down names, the waiter tells you the wait time, then you come back at your time. People were continuously seated throughout the time we were eating.) In terms of menu, it's all fresh and posted on a board. We were slightly disappointed they didn't have razor clams or tiger prawns. We got crudo, octopus, mushrooms, and pork rice. Plate came out one at a time. Our favorites of the night were crudo and pork rice. Crudo had some Thai flavor in it with a hint of spice, we drank the broth as well because it was that delicious. Pork rice had a lot of acidity, in a good way. Octopus was a bit one noted in terms of texture, and lacking some salt. It is a small restaurant but I wouldn't call it tiny. I think given the amount of tables, it can seats 30-40 people. By the time we left, a bit after 9pm, there was a long line outside the door. So come here early if you want to try. Warning - be prepared to wait if you don't come before opening. We didn't come early enough and we were second in line for the 2nd seating at 7:30pm. They do seatings for every 2 hours so if you didn't make it for 5:30pm seating then you will make it for the 7:30pm and so on. They also have a sister restaurant that is not far from here. The service is impeccable. They come around with a blackboard of what is on the menu and they let you know how many dishes you should order depending on your party. The service is very friendly and nice. They know their dishes really well here. We ordered the razor clams (14), scallops (14) and steak sandwich (15). We had the flourless chocolate cake (5) to finish. We actually wanted to order more but we knew our stomachs would not hold all the food. The razor clams and scallops were VERY ADDICTIVE. They tasted super fresh and were simply seasoned but tasted complex. The scallops were so creamy. Not fishy at all but SO CREAMY. The steak sandwiches was very hearty and way too big for 2 people to finish. It comes with 2 and cut into 4 so it would be perfect for a group of 4. I wanted to try practically everything else on the menu but we were already so stuffed at this point. The flourless chocolate cake was recommended by the server and boy does she have good taste. It was creamy and rich. Not overly so that you didn't want to continue eating it. It looks thin but is enough for 2 people. The decadence of the dark chocolate was the perfect finish to the meal and went really well with the wine that we had chosen. Overall - I want to keep this place as a hidden secret but so many people already know about it. The food is delicious and it's not overly priced for what it is. I headed back up to Praça Luís de Camões where I found a seat and people watched. When I returned to the restaurant, I was seated and my bread/olives/water were set down. I love the small plates concept, the rotating menu, the no paper menu, the creative dishes, the service, the warm and fuzzies I got when eating...everything is A+. If you are a couple or 1 person (don't know how a group would be accommodated) and don't want to be turned away at the door, it is very simple--arrive no later than 10 mins before the door opens (but really 30 is probably ideal if you will be in Lisbon during high season, i happened to be here in low) 12:30p for lunch, 6p for dinner. That will most likely get you in the door once you are on queue or allow you to join the waitlist for a spot later during the lunch or dinner window. Simply come back at the time they provide and voila! The menu changes often so I won't get into how amazing the dishes were. I am certain you will enjoy your experience. They recommended ordering 2 or so dishes, but I got full with just one and bread and wine as a solo diner. My loss! Ps some reviews here have mentioned bad customer service. I see what's going on... they have about 8 tables and want to control occupancy because of the way they take orders. They come to your table and explain the entire menu from a chalk board (perhaps a dozen items). It's all written in Portuguese. Ordered and the food came pretty quickly. This was my last meal in Lisbon before an early flight, and I really lucked out at 5:30PM on a Friday because there were plenty of open tables inside (we had previously come around 7PM and were told the wait was an hour plus). The menu changes daily, and the waiters really take the time to explain the menu to you in English. Everything sounded delicious, but we narrowed it down to four items between the two of us. Since my friend had just come here a couple of months ago and raved about the scallops, we got those to start. They were wonderful little mouthfuls of umami, so much so that we found ourselves licking the shells. Next the grilled octopus and sweet potato was my absolute favorite. It needed a little more salt, but the octopus was cooked perfectly and had a beautiful smoky flavor. The sweet potato was crispy and caramelized in just the right way. I could've eaten 3 more plates of this. The fried mackerels were perfect--fresh, crispy, and well-seasoned. I was amazed at how easy it was to wolf them down without having to worry about the bones. Finally, we got the pork ribs with teriyaki sauce, which were the only miss of the night. They were massive, and we were surprised to find they were deep-fried. They were a little over-fried, as the meat was tough and really hard to pull from the bone. There was also too much batter, and they were overall too greasy for us. We wished we had gotten another seafood dish, since it seems like that's what they do best. Overall, we really liked this place and wanted to try everything they had to offer. Nothing makes a place better than being rejected. This place does not take reservations. Our unsuccessful attempt was at around 7 pm when apparently all the tables were booked already by hungry people who waited in line at around 5:30 pm. Hearing this advice, we came back the next day at around 5:35 pm to confront the line. It seemed like everyone on line was able to get seated at 6pm. There are probably three factors for why tables are hard to come by: 1) The space is very small, and seems to do best for parties of two. Even the waitress mentioned that it gets rather stressful to seat bigger parties. 2) They have a unique way of presenting the menu. There is no paper menu; no QR code. The waitress/waiter brings over a huge chalkboard and goes through all the options for the day to each individual table. This accommodates the changing menu that is rumored to be different every day. You can imagine how this becomes a bottleneck and how it slows down the service. 3) The food!!! We each got two glasses of red wine to pair with our four tapas. They recommend about 3-4 tapas for a table of two. A. Scallops - There were four scallops in its shell with a delicious butter concoction. I only wished this came with more scallops. It was that DELICIOUS. B. Razor clams - The sauce over it was very simple, which amplified the unique taste of the razor clams. It was topped with very salty kelp pieces, which was a perfect contrast to the simple tasting razor clams. C. Swordfish over cauliflower puree - I do believe this was my favorite dish on the entire trip. The fish was medium rare topped with toasted caramelized sweet capers. Who knew capers could be this good! The cauliflower puree was simple and creamy. The plate looked clean after we devoured it so did the plates on other tables. D. Fried tapioca block - I loved how she recommended this dish to us after we asked for a vegetarian option. Haha. No leafy greens here. It was very good with a jam topping. E. Serving Lisbon for ten years, and consistently full despite a no reservations policy, A Taberna da Rua das Flores takes Portuguese Ingredients seriously. So seriously, in fact, that Chef and owner André Magalhães sources much from his own gardens, makes his own Olive Oil and only sells Wines from local vineyards including those of his wife. What all this means for those lucky enough to get a seat is wonderful food with context but no pretense, and a global perspective derived from Andre's travels atop an encyclopedic knowledge of the country he calls home. Not far from Largo do Chiado, a cash-only policy and long lines justified by prices far outpaced by Products, décor is reminiscent of old Taverns while the chalkboard menu changes daily such that there are virtually no "daily" dishes. A self-taught Chef, though various stages in Michelin-starred Kitchens have given Magalhães an uncanny knack for showcasing Portugal's bounty, dinner begins with Bread and Olives followed by whatever is freshest at the market that morning. Difficult to highlight just one dish, this day's menu unlikely to ever be replicated again, early highlights included an elderly Oyster served alongside Seaweed foraged with it followed by a lightly poached Scallop and raw Marlin nearly orange in color thanks to its diet of Langoustines. Pouring Wine at fair prices, a crisp White holing its own against Grilled Lettuce topped in Sardines plus intense Garam, whole Conch proved a very special treat before moving on to crunchy Frog's Legs in Sweet Potato Starch and an African Satay atop the Greens. Serving 2018 Espera Castelão prior to a fried Cube of Cheese, the smoke exaggerating spicy Tomato Jam, Cherry became more prominent with Eggplant sticks followed by Beef Tartare and a decadent Pork Rib. Not forgetting Taberna da Rua das Flores' Mackerel Tartare, a "signature" that André admits changes regularly, one might be surprises how well powdered Sea Lettuce pairs with roast Pig, and to finish do be sure to ask for Goat Cheese Brulee with Figs if it is available. read more

Apparently solo diners are unwelcome here. Waited in line with others to get on the waiting list and when I got to the front, they refused to put me on the list because I asked for seating for one. That's a first! But I asked nicely. Or maybe they just didn't like the way I looked? But I showered and had clean clothes on! They told me to come back in an hour and a half and "maybe" they'd put me on the list. Small plates, all made fresh with products and wines from Portugal only. Only beware is a small place and cash only. We were a group of 4 and shared 3 small dishes: mussels, rabbit, and tuna. Best meal we've had in awhile. Everything is good, especially the seafood. Whatever the other reviewers say, show up even 15 minutes earlier. Prawns were top-notch: both in terms of size and flavor, practically mini-lobsters. Save some bread for dipping--even more flavor in the sauce as some of it doesn't make it through the shell. Razor clams were almost as good. Super tender and delicious. See note above re: bread. The peixe Tahiti was delightful and delicate: like a ceviche with coconut milk and red pepper (not very spicy, just a hint of heat). The fried eggplant with honey was light and airy. Something very different! Don't worry: you control your own sauce, so it won't be too sweet. We got the katsu chicken for our son. Moist and crisp, though maybe you could get this dish anywhere. Lastly, we had the duck thigh with cherries. Quite savory and a good foil to all the seafood. Service was very friendly and helpful. read more

This place came highly recommended by a local, but 2 things to know ahead of time: - No reservations - Cash only.l On a Saturday night, we waited about 30 min for 2 people around 8:30pm. The space is super small - under 10 tables. In the back, they did have a larger round table that fit 8 people, but I think tapas are easier to share with 2-4 people anyway. One of the staff members was giving us attitude when we came back to check on the wait list, but the rest of the staff made up for it. Our server (maybe the owner?) personally came and explained the menu to us one item at a time in English, and she was super friendly. In addition, they paced the food well and offered to change the plates in between each course. Wines by the glass are cheap and are generous pours. - Pao artesenal, azeite, azeitoneas: olives, bread, and olive oil to start - Paleta de tomates: super sweet and fresh tomato salad with basil and their own version of pesto - Camarão a Taberneiro: grilled prawns with a slightly spicy dipping sauce . The prawns were really sweet and fresh - Casquinhas: crab meat mixed with a batter, refilled into the body shell, then deep fried and topped with a spicy sauce and a brown sauce like soy sauce paste. It was an unexpected but interesting preparation, served with some orange wedges on the side - Alcatra fumada: Smoked veal, seared medium rare, with a really fresh salad with roasted fennel, caramelized onions, green garlic, fruit - we weren't sure what to expect when she first described this dish, but it was so good - Ameijoas a bulhao pato: steamed clams with garlic, onions, cilantro - Chocolate cake: flourless, intense, with cinnamon Highlights were the tomato salad, prawns, and veal. All of the food was great. It's not super traditional, per se, but the flavor combinations were really good, and there was a touch of some Asian flavors in some of the Portuguese style dishes.
