Sal Grosso was the one place I couldn't leave Lisbon without visiting. There's nothing on the menu that isn't phenomenal, everything that we ate was absolutely delicious. It was an amazing opportunity to learn more about traditional Portuguese flavors. The waiters are super helpful and willing to help walk you through the menu of traditional dishes. With how friendly everyone was this restaurant feels like you're having dinner with a restaurant full of your close friends.

Reservations is a must. They take cards, just not Amex. Bring a phone because they don't give out menus and you might need to take a photo of it to order from. Everyone was very accommodating and nice. Very quaint and intimate dining experience. The white sangria with mint was really good if you like sweet wines. The red sangria has autumn vibes with cinnamon and orange. Both are very good. The cod fritters were nice, not oily, and perfectly breaded with aioli sauce to spice it up. The pork belly over salad was really good. Tender, fatty pork over fresh greens, almonds and citrus slices. Very satisfied with it. The aubergine with yogurt was very umami and a bit tangy from the tomato sauce and yogurt. I liked it. The octopus with sweet potato hash was good. The octopus was a bit chewy, but I'm not accustomed to eating octopus so maybe that's just how it is. The mash was great. Sweet and flavorful. We also ordered the mushroom rice. It wasn't what I was expecting, but it was okay. It looked more like a risotto, very liquidy and quite tart with lemon zest. Overall,a great meal to jump start our time in Portugal. Very charming and food centric.

Genuinely one of the best meals I had in Portugal. Sal Grosso is an adorable, cozy, hole-in-the-wall taverna serving up some of the best traditional Portuguese food I've had in Lisbon. It can be a smidge hard to spot; it's tucked away in a little side street, with a simple, unassuming wooden sign marking their storefront. I probably would have walked straight on by if it weren't for the giant line of people forming as we all waited for the taverna to open at 7 PM. Given how popular it is, you absolutely need to make a reservation; even though we got there right at opening time, we heard several groups get turned away because the place was fully booked out for the night. Thankfully, we had a reservation, and we were invited into the coziest little restaurant; the simple, rustic wooden tables were pretty tight together, with just barely enough space to shimmy through the tables. The menu was displayed on a giant chalkboard, which spanned an entire wall. And the menu was as delicious as it was expansive. Sal Grosso serves small plates, so our server recommended that we get 1.5-2 plates per person. My mom and I ended up getting four plates to share, which included their fried baby squid, aubergine with chili yogurt, garlic prawns, and octopus with sweet potato. The plates came out as they were prepared, starting with the baby squid, which was fried to a perfect, crispy, golden brown, and tasted wonderful with a hint of lemon or the dipping sauce they offered on the side. Next came the garlic prawns, which were perfectly tender and had a TON of garlic flavor -- I swear there must have been an entire head of garlic in there. The sauce was pretty light, making it the perfect accompaniment to the fried baby squid and to the more unique, heavier flavors that came with our remaining plates. Next came the two stars of the show -- the aubergine and octopus. The aubergine (or eggplant, for my fellow Americans) was insane...genuinely one of the best ways I've seen someone prepare a vegetable. Mind you, I'm typically an aubergine hater, so I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this. The eggplant was perfectly cooked to be tender and soft, and entirely lacking in the bitterness or weird mushy texture that aubergine so often has. This soft center paired wonderfully with a perfectly crispy shell, almost as though it was flash fried. The exquisite combo of textures was almost rivaled by the balance of flavors; the eggplant itself was coated in a delightful chili sauce, which was salty, spicy, and umami, and it was all served on top of a bed of yogurt. The creaminess and tang from the yogurt was yet another texture and flavor to even further level up the combo the eggplant had created on its own...truly one of the most life changing vegetable side dishes I've ever had. Equally life changing was the octopus. Sal Grosso offers a giant serving of octopus, with two lovely tentacles served over a bed of sweet potato mash and topped with chopped tomatoes, garlic, herbs, and a light broth. I always find octopus to be a bit of a risky order, since it can be amazing when done well, but chewy and rubbery if done even slightly incorrectly. But, that wasn't a concern at Sal Grosso...they absolutely knew exactly what they were doing. The octopus was SO tender, while still retaining a bit of springiness and a great bite. The broth was delightful, and the tomato / garlic / herb mixture on top offered a great pop of freshness. I loved that neither accoutrement overpowered the octopus and really let the natural flavors of the seafood shine. It also paired wonderfully with the sweet potato mash, which was rich and creamy, with a few small chunks of sweet potato left unmashed; the sweet potato was remarkably easy to eat -- I could've easily downed multiple plates of it -- and made a great texture and flavor break in between bites of octopus. All in all, I truly cannot recommend Sal Grosso enough. It has some of the best food I've had in my life, serving up one of the top 20 meals I've ever had (and probably top 5 in Europe), and the space is so cozy and the staff so friendly. If you want a delicious meal with a traditional Portuguese taverna experience, Sal Grosso needs to go on your Lisbon bucket list.

This was definitely one of, if not the, best meals we had in Lisbon. Incredible flavors that truly exemplify Portuguese cuisine, and while also mixing it up enough to keep it interesting. It's a small space so make a reservation! The staff was kind and helpful suggesting what to get. My one regret is that we didn't save enough room for dessert!

10/10 make a reservation NOW. Everything I ate was phenomenal and I'm so happy that my sister was able to snag a reservation for 7 of us the night before. It was truly meant to be as this was an unforgettable experience. I love the casual ambiance to the well crafted and well presented dishes. I don't think you can go wrong with anything, we thoroughly enjoyed every single dish and recommend them all. Best of all the waitstaff/service was very kind and welcoming and the prices were affordable. If I ever return to Lisbon, Sal Grosso is definitely at the top of my list. Every dish we tried was so yummy there. The cod was our favorite! If you are looking for authentic cuisine while visiting Lisbon, this is the spot. We were lucky to get a reservation since they went viral on social media. It didn't sound like they take walk-ins as they were turning people away. It's a small restaurant with limited seating. Service was friendly and quick, food came out in a timely manner. Highly recommend!!

I failed to do more research on Sal Grosso before going in, but this restaurant does a more modern take on Portuguese pesticos, whereas I was looking for something more traditional. We ordered cod fritters, garlic prawns, wild boar, 1 pork belly, and 1 oxtail. Out of all of these dishes, the garlic prawns were our favorite. We found nothing special with the other dishes, however, and we were really indifferent towards our meal. I did not care for the flor de sal wine, and its was my least favorite wine on the trip.

Made lunch reservations here and it was one of our favorite restaurants in Lisbon. It is super duper tiny with a very non-descript exterior. You'd probably miss it if you weren't looking for it. Reservations are almost necessary because the place is so small. The orange salad and beef cheek were stand outs.

Extraordinary food! Everything we had was just fantastic. We ordered: bread, the diced tuna, the mini fried squid, the orange salad, the chicken in pepper sauce and the passion fruit crème brûlée. My only complaint was that the skin of the chicken was not crispy, but I took it off and the chicken below was fall off the bone tender. I will suggest that even if you don't think you need the bread, get the bread...you need it to soak up all the amazing sauces. The service when we first sat down, left much to be desired, however, both of the servers warmed up and were awesome! One of them even brought me a small taste of the white wine sangria...it was refreshing but sweet. I had the house white wine, it was also quite delicious. Everything is very reasonably priced. I would return if we ever find ourselves in Lisbon again.

    Cod confit

Everything about this place was spectacular. Traditional Portuguese with a modern twist. We had the beef cheek, octopus, cod confit, and eggplant w smoked yogurt. These were all of the recommendation of our waiter who was also bar none. I normally hate eggplant, however this was very good. Overall, a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone in Lisbon. P.S.- try to get a reservation at the original location if you like the authentic feel, however the new location offers the same incredible food with a modern ambience.

This was one of my favorite meals in Portugal. Lucky for you it's right by the train station so you can have a meal right after coming in from Porto :) The standout items were the eggplant in yogurt sauce, cod croquettes (it was nice to have an upleveled version), oxtail, clam rice, and oddly the basil mousse for dessert(?!). The servers were so friendly and accommodating with our luggage. And the meal was pretty inexpensive considering how much we ordered.

Taberna Sal Grosso is a modern taberna located in the alfama district serving petiscos, or small plates. The food was delicious! We tried the baby fried squid, beef tartare, octopus rice, and the pork cheeks with mashed sweet potatoes. Standouts were the beef tartare and the octopus rice. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. It's a small spot so I definitely recommend getting a reservation. We got super lucky on a Saturday afternoon late November for a seating without reservations (a table didn't show up)! We arrived just at opening for lunch and was third in line after a table of 2 and 3. We were a table of 4 and we were seated around 15 minutes after opening (they give reservations 15 minutes to arrive). They do have a second round of reservations so you get a bit more than an hour to eat, which was plenty of time for us. Service was friendly and the space was cozy and comfortable. Definitely recommend trying this spot out if you're in Lisbon!

My friend found this restaurant prior to visiting Lisbon and reserved it for her birthday. I think she either found it online or on IG. We took an Uber to make our reservation because it is located up high if you were to walk in this area and lots of steps. They sat us and it is a very small restaurant. It took a minute to order but we ordered a lot, I read up on reviews because coming here and I really wanted to their orange salad (could have gotten it without pork belly), we really liked the Garlic Ray, we got the octopus and cod dish which are very traditional Portuguese dishes. We got pork, beef, and risotto. We all liked the garlic Ray, risotto, and orange salad. The beef, pork, and octopus dishes had a lot of flavor and we were so full at the end of the night. We got a glass of red to go with our food. Service was pretty slow, we ordered bread because we were starving in the beginning that never came and that's probably because we ordered too much.

It's rotisserie chicken doused with a spicy hot sauce so what's not to like? I knew it was a Portuguese-originated dish, so I looked for a place famous for it. Here on a Sunday evening, there was quite a queue extending up the cobblestone alley, so I realized this must be the place. Although it was at least thirty people deep, it didn't take more than twenty minutes for Jamie W and me to secure a table upstairs. It was a homestyle dining room set-up that hovered between cozy and crowded depending on the fluctuating volume level. Interestingly all the servers were male, and while ours was the most junior, he consciously followed the behavior of his veteran brethren. There was no question about our main course, the 13,5€ Frango Assado No Espeto (Roast Chicken on the Spit) (Photo 7). It was tender and succulent enough albeit a bit under seasoned, all the more reason to pour a liberal dose of the piri piri sauce (Photo 8). Our sides were simple but shareable, the 3,2€ Batata Fritta (French Fries) (Photo 9) and the 4,3€ Salada Mista (Mixed Salad) (Photo 10). Both were fine, though we really wanted to try their Cream Spinach. They were already out of it in the kitchen. We were quite satisfied nonetheless, and their service pretty much worked like clockwork. A small line of one or two groups at a time formed throughout the night. We were seated outside and there was a street performer with an acoustic guitar - def added some great vibes to the night. It was a chilly December night but the heater provided *just enough* warmth. We ordered the codfish cakes which were alright - nothing too special. Since it was a little cold out, I also ordered the chicken broth. It was bland, but good in its own way. There was some rice and chicken bits in it that tasted really good. The rotisserie chicken that they are known for was EXTREMELY salty. We were a group of 6 and ordered 2.5 rotisserie chicken (so 5 pieces) but this was actually way too much. It's a little better (but still salty) if you don't eat the skin, but that's the best part given how crispy it was! I tried to drown out the saltiness by using the piri piri sauce and it helped a little bit... but biting into the chicken meant biting into the undissolved salt bits. Given how salty it was, we could not finish it at all and left behind 3 pieces. Service itself was meh. They made sure to inform us that the tip was not included in the bill.
