Super small place but it is amazing! We went to the door, the host said we could eat there but would need to leave within and hour and a half because he has a party. No problem! We had the aubergine, octopus, cod, fitters, pork belly, and the white sangria because it was really hot outside. And to be honest, everything was fantastic. The service was very attentive a fun atmosphere. I highly recommend this place if you're in Lisbon! read more

Best meal I've ever had and the waiter was so nice and helpful! Need to try the pork cheek!!!

Food was excellent, octopus was amazing, paired with local wine and beer. Service was outstanding and ambiance was cozy in a traditional neighborhood near the river. read more

Food is authentic and you will dream about it seriously. Had the garlic shrimp, mushroom and coriander rice, baby squid. White sangria and a beer plus a basque cheesecake to round out our order. Please get a reservation if you want to try this stellar experience! read more

Sal Grosso - Coriander, mushroom rice garlic shrimp with baby squid. - Portuguese Near Me - Lisbon, 11

We made a reservation and cake per the great ratings and were disappointed not even because of our expectations because there weren't any. What we ordered: 1) Codfish Confit 9.50€ 2) Stingray 8.50€ 3) Catch of the week 10€ 4) Codfish cake 7.50€ 5) Tomato and Fig salad 6.50€ I am not kidding but the tomato fig salad was the best dish we had here and the only dish we would order again. The service was not attentive and not really friendly. If you do have to choose one fish dish. The stingray had a white wine sauce that was nice. Rest assured was mediocre. read more

The food was amazing and different. Make sure you have a reservation in advance or you might not get a seat. My favorite dishes were the orange salad and the bacalhau a bras (cod fish with potatoes and egg). It was a small restaurant and the menu seems to change, but I enjoyed tge intimate setting. The service was excellent and hopefully one day I can visit again and try other items on their menu. read more

I feel like I went to Portugal solely to eat. I ate really well the whole time. And I'm not exaggerating when I say that this: this is the best meal of that whole trip. This place is tiny and it was incredibly busy when we got there. Like, I put my name down, my husband and I went for a walk, we came back, waited some more and almost gave up waiting kind of busy. But it was so worth the wait! By the time we sat down, I was ready to order the whole menu... And I didn't. But I definitely ordered way more than was appropriate for two people. Their menu changes everyday and is written on a chalkboard. We ordered the following: Tomato & fig salad - loved this nice mixture of acidic tomatoes, sweet figs and salty cheese. Inked cuttlefish - beautifully cooked and served with roasted potatoes and a tomato & parsley relish on top. Smoked pork belly - I love pork belly but tend to think people prepare it a little too carelessly because oftentimes, people don't make the effort to balance out its richness. That wasn't the case here. The pork belly was perfectly rendered, had a beautiful smokey flavor that wasn't overpowering and was complemented with a green salad with an acidic dressing that cut through the richness. Oxtail - Beautifully rich and an absolute dinner-ender (we had no room for dessert after this), their oxtail was tender and wonderful. Served with a couple of slices of what I think were pears, it was a great dish to end the night on. Overall, this is an intimate place I really appreciated. It was thoughtful and creative without being fussy. Despite the long wait, once we sat down the ambience was more akin a beloved neighborhood taberna than an exclusive stuffy restaurant. This was my 1 year anniversary dinner spot with my husband and I'm really glad we picked well. We thought it was all memorable and delicious. read more

Family run business. Menu is on the board. Changes based on what's available. We ordered the lamb stew, smoked pork belly, corn bread and beans, fries, sting ray and squid rice. All were delicious. Sting ray was the least fav. For dessert, had bread pudding - yummy. They also brew their own beer - which was very good. After lunch, they brought a bottle of wine and brandy for us to partake and complete the meal. For a party of 4, the bill was about 49 Euros!! Really worth it. Delicious meal. read more

Tiny restaurant serving our best meal in Portugal! * * * EXPERIENCE * * * Please make a reservation - this place is tiny and opens at 8 and it filled up not long after opening while a long line was outside. There's only one server too and she was busy running around all night but service was super good - polite and informative. * * * FOOD * * * Cod Fish Confit: A Hands down the best cod fish we had in this trip - it was steamed then grilled on the outside, with some beans and vegetables underneath. The amount of saltiness was just about right, the texture was not too hard as cod fish tends to be, the flavor from the sauce completely soaked the fish... lovely. Dice Tuna: A- It's a bit on the salty side, with strong garlic and onion taste, very very tasty. I would say this is not my favorite style of how tuna was prepared however the flavor alone was wonderful, the pickle added special flavor to it. Stir Fried Pork: A Once I took a bite I could feel the fatty tissue soaked with the semi-charcoal-y, tomato kind of sauced, it's super crunchy on the outside too, with the green onion and pepper as supplement, it's very tasty. Fried Quail: A- The lean meat was very tender which it's hard to achieve, it's slightly on the sour and salty side, a lot of garlic was used. If you are a quail fan you will love this dish. Picked Rabbit: A I have never had cold rabbit dish before... the meat texture was similar to duck's, and since rabbit could be gamey they added some pomegranate to it which was clever, personally I don't have a problem with gamey meat but the balancing of the two elements was another level. Oxtail: A I believe it was somewhat red wine braised and the flavor completely dissolved into the meat, texture was super tender and the meat was fully separated from the bone, with a slightly grilled taste on the outside. Wonderful dish to close the night. With all these plus a nice bottle of wine, it cost only 68 euros. With excellent food and service and reasonable price, this place was hands down my favorite restaurant experience in Lisbon this time. I will definitely go back! read more

Amazing little restaurant in Alfama neighborhood of Lisbon. All of the dishes we had were very delicious and authentic to Portugal. There restaurant is quite small, probably only 6-7 tables so definitely recommend making a reservation on their website if possible. Extremely friendly staff. Overall a must go! read more

Avoid this. Please. I caught food poisoning here a week ago that put me in the hospital. Had the steak tartare, bone marrow. Could have been a number of items. I wouldn't wish this on my enemy. Worst I've ever had in my life. read more

Straight Up.... you need reservations. My partner & myself, Twice, attempted to barge the doors for seating with no avail. The place smelled amazing. Seating is extremely limited. Next time. (sad face emoji). You still get 4 stars baby. read more

Definitely one of our more enjoyable meals in Portugal. Service was a bit slow and disjointed but friendly. Every dish was good no disappointments at all but the standouts were definitely the sting ray ( not even a huge fan of fish ) and the pork belly. Reservations are a must since the space is so small, saw multiple people turned away. read more

Made a reservation 6 weeks before. Tried to confirm the day before- no one answered email or call. Took Uber there to confirm time. Got called 2 hours later that power out- no dinner. When told that next day was our last in Lisbon, manager said he'll try to get us in next day- to email him, which I did (he had texted me their email). I got no response (again) to emails and several phone calls. I understand that things happen but the lack of communication is unacceptable. read more

Favorite restaurant in Lisbon! Really amazing spot. Definitely make an rsvp in advance and bring cash.

Very small popular restaurant. Excellent food. Would recommend calling for reservations. Had the Bacalao O Braz (hope I spelled that right) and it was excellent. read more

This was the best meal I had in my life. The octopus is amazing, the cod fritter are unbeatable and let me tell you, the eggplant is perfect! We loved this place and it was super cheap. If you are in Lisbon at all, go here over anything else. Best seafood and tapas in Lisbon. read more

I really don't have much to add to what's written already. This and its sister restaurant were recommended by the chefs at A Taberna do Mar, so we decided to go. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. My only problem was that I wanted to try everything on the menu. If you're going to go for dinner, know that you should try to get a reservation. And you should definitely try to get one at 7PM. Later than that and you're waiting for the first seating to finish up, which can take a while. read more

Remember to get a reservation as there is not much seating in the restaurant. The line is well formed 40 minutes before the place opens for dinner service. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. We tried many of the items on the menu and all were very delicious. Favorites were the shellfish and seafood. Made friends with the couple sitting next to us as well read more

Literally up the street from Santa Apolonia station, this was one of the memorable meals on my trip as it fit into the "cozy neighbourhood-y" restaurants category. Food was great, service was sweet, & prices were reasonable! One server's English wasn't the best, but no big deal. The roasted chicken dish was very well-marinated and I had the pork cheek which tasted like beef brisket - very tender! It dark gravy though was a tad on the salty side. Like most places in Lisbon, fries were very good! I'd definitely go back as it met all my requirements for places that I enjoy dining at when I'm travelling. :) read more

This is such a great restaurant. You really need a reservation, though we lucked out and got a table due to someone else's cancellation. The menu is written on the wall. Each dish was surprising, without being fussy. Everything was prepared perfectly. I almost forgot to add - and the prices were totally reasonable! read more

Words cannot do this place justice. I am always skeptical of places that have 5 full stars and few reviews, but Taberna Sal Grosso exceeds all expectations and delivers so much more. This will be a restaurant staple that I will continue to think about for a long time. If you find yourself in Lisbon you have to make eating here a priority. I promise that it will deliver on every level. Whether it's the house wine, the fresh catch of the day, the perfectly prepared side dishes, or the unbelievable deserts Taberna Sal Grosso will become one of those experiences you will think about when you want to remember why Lisbon is such a special city. All I can say is it will be the biggest mistake of your entire trip to not make a genuine effort to eat here. read more

By far the best of all the hidden gems in the Alfama neighborhood. It's a small little place only about 200m from the Santa Apolonia train station. You're greeted warmly at the door (assuming you made a reservation) and are seated at your table. The menu is written on the board and we were greeted by Phillip. He was fantastic! He answered our questions and was very patient while my group and I figured out what we wanted to order. We ended up ordering the squid rice, sting ray, lamb, pork belly, and bread and beans as a side. They were INCREDIBLE. My favorites being the squid rice, pork belly, and lamb. They are must haves if you stop in here! We also made sure to order a glass of each of the types of beer that's brewed in house. They were both fantastic and soon the second and third glasses were coming! We ended the meal with some complimentary brandy and house wine while we wolfed down two orders of the bread pudding for dessert. Some of the best I've managed to have. In the end, our bill ended up coming in at just over €60.00 for the four of us. Not bad for the area given the quality of service and food. Sal Grosso is one of my motivations to make sure Lisbon becomes a regular vacation stop. Eat here and you won't be disappointed! read more

This was such an amazing place. Small and welcoming with a short wait. The food was great with a great variety. The staff as well as other patrons were delightful. We shared cod confit, mackerel and a tomato and fig salad. We had 2 beer and 1/4 litre of wine also coffee and tea. $35 euro was more than reasonable. read more

While on a week trip in Lisbon, we accidentally came across one of the best meals of our lives. This place may look like a mediocre hole in the wall from the outside but they're cooking up some of the best food I've ever had. 5 star quality dishes IMO. We had the oxtail and the octopus m, both unbelievably amazing. Makes you want to try everything on the menu and I'm sure it'd all be just as great. The hospitality was also fantastic our server was a delight. After the meal he recommended we try their sister restaurant Sal Mourna (5 min walk away). We went the next night and enjoyed a meal of equal satisfaction. I highly highly recommend both of these restaurants!! read more

Bruno and the other chefs at Sal Grosso delivered a truly exceptional dining experience. You must (read: must) have a reso for more than two people. We saw two couples seated without, but many more turned away. We had the oxtail, roast chicken, meat platter, black pudding, fries, fig and tomato salad, mackerel with greens, among others. We had two vegetarians, which made ordering from the menu a bit more difficult, but they made some modifications and were very accommodating. I do wish they had more vegetarian options so that we didn't put them out (and because all of the veggie dishes were awesome). The service was absolutely doting, and we never waited long for anything. Which is amazing because they're also cooks - you will see them at the back, in the kitchen. They serve their own house-made blond and porter beers. The lemon mousse was also incredible, and they offered a few tastes of authentic Portuguese spirits to finish our meal. It was a really tremendous experience, and one I strongly recommend to anyone visiting Lisbon. Many thanks to Bruno, Pedro, Vitor and the team! read more

I'm usually wary of fine dining establishments located near major transit hubs, but my friend recommended we stop by Sal Grosso while visiting Alfama from NYC. And it was the best meal I've ever had in Europe--seriously! Not only food-wise, but in terms service. Small plates--each with well-defined taste palates--extremely friendly service, and a great local vibe combined to make this an unforgettable meal experience. If you're like me and sometimes find yourself scrambling to sift through reviews while on the road, trust me...this place is legit and worth waiting outside to enjoy the food & ambience! read more

Great little restaurant! Highly recommended so we went to check it out. Make sure to book a reservation as only about 6 tables. We lucked out and after waiting a half hour there was a reservation no show. Shared a table "family style" with two other families from Germany which was a bit awkward at first but once introductions were done ended up being a great experience hearing about their travels and home. The food and wine was amazing. It was more of a culinary experience than a meal. The waiters popped by to chat, danced to the music while they got dishes ready, brought some Port in the house at the end and ensured everyone had a drink. Really fun first evening in Lisboa and the best meal we had in our 5 days here. Very cheap for the experience too. Great night read more

If I could give 6 stars, I would! First of all, if you love the experience of food, come here. If you want a quick place, move on... be prepared to wait, but the best things are worth waiting for!!! I had a party if 4 for a 2:00 lunch. After about a 20 minute wait, in a quaint street, we were seated by Sara, and Bruno took our order. Bruno, along with Victor, are the two chefs, and please let them explain the dishes...they explain them with such detail and elegance that you will want everything on the menu! My group was feeling adventurous, so we ordered the duck liver, pickled rabbit, pork cheek and oxtails (along with a recommended wine). If I could describe the food-gasims that we had sitting around that table, eating, drinking, and discussing the food with the friendly, multilingual staff. If you are anywhere near the Alfama area, you have to take the time and stop at this tavern. This was a true Lisboa feast!!!! read more

some of the best food i had on my entire trip! it's tiny, so reserve in advance (i messaged them on facebook) but be prepared for some of the best home-style portuguese food ever. the menu is really heavy on meat and seafood (just the way i like it). i particularly loved the oxtail, the duck livers, and the roast chicken-- probably one of the only times i loved roast chicken at a restaurant! also enjoyed the octopus risotto and fries. their sangria was light and refreshing-- you can order half-liters, which are perfect for one person. and for dessert, the chocolate mousse is out of this world. read more
