This was our first introduction to Portuguese food, and it was wonderful. There was a good selection of tapas, and we mostly went for the seafood. I really enjoyed their fried items. The choco frito had a light batter on top and you could tell it was really fresh because it was so light and bouncy. The bolinhos de bacalhau were also a highlight; creamy potato filling with codfish mixed in. The asparagus and jamon with scrambled eggs provided a nice balance to our meal. I'm always a sucker for well made scrambled eggs. My favorite dish by far was the arroz de pato. It was packed with smoked duck flavor, and accented with charred sausage and bacon on top. The dishes were on the smaller end, so we ended up getting 5-6 dishes for three people. read more

Stumbled on Carmo after searching for Tapas and wine. Couldn't be happier with this choice. They have outdoor seating across the street (wasn't aware) which was a special treat. Our waiter (didn't get his name) was awesome. Everything he suggested was spot on. We started with the Cod Carpaccio. Wonderful. Then we had the Shrimp in Curry sauce with rice. Amazing dish. Of course some French Fries. Dessert was the Pistachio trio. Again, amazing. I would def recommend this restaurant if you're looking for Tapas and Vino. read more

My favorite thing about traveling is the opportunity for human connection with an amazing people. While on our trip to Lisbon, we found our favorite place there as well as our favorite people. Anifa, what can I say about the most amazing human, who took time to sit and chat with every patron and regale us with stories of his life, travels, and listened to ours without judgement and with a very keen love of life. My friend forever after our trip. Everyone should have a friend like Anifa. Yash. The drinks made by Yash were short of heavenly. The world's famous mixologists have nothing on him. I know he will be a great man in any career he so chooses, and the world will be better for this. The food was amazing, every dish exquisite. The BEST Seafood Risotto I have had in my entire life. Nice space but the food was disappointing. Everything we had was deep fried, which kills any subtlety to the seafood. Cuttlefish was a bit chewy and the cod was overcooked so it was not flaky but dry (and also had too much bite to it). Chorizo was served flambéd but the flavor was nothing to write home about. It has a great view of Lisboa rooftops and the Santa Justa Lift. I had a green smoothie with basil and lime -- it was very refreshing. We dined early like nerdy tourists but we had the restaurant and waitstaff to ourselves. The dark wood interior had a chill vibe only enhanced by the bossa nova music playing the the background. We had a view outside our table overlooking the Chafariz do Carmo (fountain and tree-lined square). The sparkling sangria made it a little celebratory and we enjoyed the chouriço and tempura green beans starters and the pork cheeks, and shrimp tagliatelle entrées, which were all on point. I ordered a side salad with my meal and he didn't bother to tell me my meal already included one. Pleasant dining room with open windows. Crocante de queijo de cabra e molho do chef (Crispy typical Portuguese cheese and chef sauce) - the cheese had a strong taste but paired well with the chef's sauce. Bochechas de porco com pure de alho frances (Black Pork Cheeks with leek purée) - the black pork cheeks were tender but tasted gamey. The sauce over the pork cheeks was good. The leek purée was unique but a bit bland. Risoto de Tamboril com limao (Monkfish Risotto) - the risotto had a few pieces of monkfish and two shrimps. The shrimp was mushy so I could tell it wasn't fresh. The monkfish was good though. Overall, the risotto needed a little more flavor. read more

My wife and I had just arrived in Lisbon on September 19 from the US, ready for a long overdue, COVID delayed anniversary trip to experience Portugal. This was our first time to Portugal and we had a friend recommend Carmo, and it was a short distance from our hotel. We chose to sit outdoors in the plaza, our server tended to us right away. They do not have a wine list, but our server walked us through her selections. I selected their Vinho Verde, which was my first time trying this Portuguese specialty and I was glad I did. Of course, I had read about the restaurants that put Couvert on the table, but this was not Carmo's way, the items were on the menu, but only for you to order. To start I had the Portuguese cheese board (Tabua de Queijos Regionals) which came with 3 delightful cheeses, my favorite was the harder yellow cheese with red rind (a white brie like cheese and a soft very fragrant cheese was also included). Due to my jet lag, I forgot to ask what they were exactly. My wife had the tempura green beans to start and they were delightful. For the mains I had the O Nosso Bachalhau à Brás (Shredded cod with onion/potatoes/egg) and my wife had the Grilled Salmon catch of the day. Both dishes were perfectly prepared. My dish was both light yet completely satisfying. No desert this night other than port. To finish the evening, we both had a house port while listening to a busker play jazz standards on a guitar in the plaza. It was a fantastic first evening in Lisbon thanks to Carmo. The best dinner during this 4 day visit to Lisbon was at this place - the Carmo Restaurant: nice and with a relaxing ambiance (particularly after the neighboring table's party that appeared to harass the waitress had finally collected their last dimes, payed and left). Outdoor would have been possible but in the evening, it suddenly turned out to be rather fresh/chilly. The food was delicious, well balanced, full flavor. Salada Queijo Cabra (goat cheese salade with grilled eggplant), Azetonas Temperadas (seasoned olives), Bacalhau Confitado (cod with leak puree) were excellent but not the only choices. I had dinner at Restaurante Carmo after seeing all the high praise from other Yelp reviewers but somehow missed the review from my own Yelp friend. After having dinner here, I agreed with her assessment. The food was good (not enough to get 5 stars) but the service could have been better. We walked in to find no one at the front. I tried to look around the corners and no one else is around but there are patrons sitting inside. Two waiters walk by without acknowledging anyone at the front. A few minutes later, the host walks by and asks if we have reservations. We did not, but there was a table available anyway. Afterwards, it took a while to get menus. It was as if it was their first dinner service and the staff was making rookie mistakes. We ordered the prawns in a white wine sauce with garlic and cilantro and the octopus on a bed of rapini. The prawns were surprisingly small, but plentiful. The dish would be better with larger prawns. The octopus was great. I liked the tenderness of the octopus, but not the best I've ever had (that honor goes to the octopus I had in the Azores). I did not like the rapini, however. I don't think the two flavors go well together. To summarize, the food was okay. The service could improve. read more

I went very hungry and told my server as such. My portion was very small. I forgot what it was called - I think something with cod. The food was less than lukewarm when it finally arrived. The wine was decent. The service was very, very slow. The creme brûlée was some of the best I've ever had - it had soft pear on top. I probably would have enjoyed myself more if I ordered two of everything and had faster service. Probably not the best place to have your first meal after a long international flight due to the slow service and tiny portion. I had to ask for my check three times. They open at 7 pm so take note of that.... they have an outside terrace were we have our bottle pf wine and some appetizers... on that side, the garlic prawns were... well, of the best I've had ever.... and trust me I've had many all over.... so much so that I had to order the same as my main course. Prawns were al dente, garlic was not too overpowering, the red pepper was delicious and fresh.... the broth... yes broth and not oil alone was very good.... Can NOT miss this plate! The Cod croquettes were good but not on our favorite side.... we also had some ribeye as we do not eat everything on the menu... no pork and my wife no seafood as well!! First, some general advice for first time American visitors to Lisbon. Eat breakfast. Lunch is not served until noon precisely. Trying to find any restaurant in Lisbon open for lunch before noon is impossible. Brunch seems to be strictly an American concept. No big deal, but if you've skipped breakfast, the half hour between 1130am and noon can seem like a lifetime and no one is permitted to be seated until the magic moment. Anyway, such was our experience here. Once seated, our overall experience was good. Hungry, we over ordered on appetizers thinking they would arrive ahead of our entrees. Skip the cheese, olive and bread platter. Very small portions and not worth the cost. And we were surprised to find bones in our lukewarm pasteis de bacalhau. However our entrees were well worth the wait. Having recently over indulged in Portuguese food, I ordered the the steak burger. My dining partner ordered filet mignon with the traditional egg on top. Neither of us went away hungry. And my burger was perhaps the best I've ever eaten. read more

4.5 stars! Restaurante Carmo serves beautifully-plated traditional Portuguese dishes with bold flavors in a cozy, romantic setting. The waiters were so friendly and attentive, and you get fantastic value for the prices here. My favorite dish of the evening was the grilled cuttlefish salad--I was astounded by the bold, herbal flavors of the firm (but not chewy) cuttlefish, which paired so nicely with the greens, the bitter endive leaves, and the cherry tomatoes; and to boot, you get a surprisingly generous serving of the fish with the salad. We continued with the sauteed mushrooms with goat cheese, a classic Portuguese dish that was filled to the brim with deep umami flavors and was perfect for eating with bread! For our entree, we got the slow-cooked cod with leek puree. The fish fillet was seared perfectly and had an amazing crisp crust. As to be expected, the cod was a bit on the salty side, but the flaky, tender fish made for a nice complement to the relatively bland leek and potato puree. Pairing these two elements of the dish yielded absolutely perfect bites with just the right combination of flavors and textures. Overall, I'd highly recommend Restaurante Carmo for its simply yet tasty food, warm hospitality, and great value--this is a great place to come if you're around the central area of Lisbon! read more

This restaurant is in the square close to a military museum. Somewhat hard to find since there are many. I ordered the octopus. Normally I don't like octopus in Canada but I was told it's amazing in Portugal so here we are. And it was amazing. The meat was delicate and flavourful. We really do it no service in Canada. It was really good. It came on a bed of potatoes which were whole small yellow potatoes that were slightly mashed, drenched in olive oil and garlic and salt. Amazing. Best potatoes ever. The spinach also had similar flavours. It's amazing how delicious such simple ingredients could be. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Had a lovely lunch here after visiting the convent and archeology museum just across the square. The space is rustic but very clean and the acoustics are good. The service was charming and attentive. The food was an eclectic mix. The homemade liver pate served with bread is a speciality of the house and a lovely surprise. Cherry tomatoes in the Cesar salad was a little less lovely surprise. I was in Lisbon for a full week, and this was the only restaurant I hit more than once. The main reasons I did so were the variety, portions, and service. The menu had too many items that looked delicious for me to order in one visit, so once they delivered on taste in round 1, I was fairly confident I would return. I was right. Portions were very generous, perhaps the largest portions I had for petiscos (tapas) style serving while in Lisbon (and I had petiscos pretty much once a day). The service was prompt, friendly, welcoming. The wine is cheap, and the cocktails are huge. My only quip was the seating could have been more comfortable. Items I ate: - Gambas Ajillo: huge portion. Biggest portion of shrimp I had in Lisbon, with absolutely delicious oil/sauce that was excellent for bread dipping. I ordered this on both trips. - Chicken Wings: very tasty. Not super spicy, but if you love wings you won't be disappointed. -Sauteed mushrooms with sheep cheese: exactly as you'd imagine. Came out piping hot and melty. - Roasted chorizo with pineapple chutney: I am a chorizo fanatic, and I was unsure whether I would care about the chutney, but it was a great paring. The chorizo was rich so the chutney balanced it out. Also, enormous portion. See photo. - Clams: so tender and juicy. Maybe the best clams I've ever had. I also ordered these on both visits. - Mussels: get off my back, I love shellfish ok?! I remember these mussels being huge and good. I'm not sure what makes me feel this way, but I usually find larger mussels to be the tastiest. - Croquettes: awesome, hot, great texture. Tomato jam was a hit. And bonus, they came with a small salad, so hey! I ate a vegetable too. What a plot twist. All of the dishes above are on the "typical tastes" portion of the menu. I didn't even make it to the conventional entree portion of the menu, which had several things that sounded delicious as well. read more

This is a cute intimate little restaurant next to the museum of Carmo Archaeological Museum. Across from a park this is the perfect setting a an amazing dinner in Lisbon. Prices are reasonable and food is absolutely delicious. Had the garlic prawns cabbage soup and fresh olives. A bottle of red blend wine made it all the more perfect. Service was just excellent. Stopped by here with my fiance for some traditional Portuguese fare! We came here on a Wednesday night and it seemed pretty busy, but we were able to get a table right away. Apparently they take reservations, so that's an option as well. We ordered: -Codfish cakes with garlic/coriander rice: The cod fish cakes were nice and crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Balanced well with the rice. Bacalhau is usually pretty salty, but these seemed just right! -Caldo verde: A smooth potato-y soup with splashes of kale and chorizo. It was delish and rich. -Monkfish rice with prawns: Good tomato and saffron flavors in this stew. Quite yummy! This was definitely enough for 2 people. The above was satisfying for 2 people.
