A Taberna da Rua das Flores is a neat cozy restaurant fairly close to the city center of Lisbon where you'll feel at home with some dishes that seem simple but are flavorful! No reservations and cash only so expect a wait, but easy to use that time to grab a drink nearby and get cash from a nearby ATM. We went on a late Thursday and it was about a 1.5 hour wait or about 30 min after our quoted time, but fortunately, we had no plans. The menu is ever changing and written on a board that the server walks through, which can be intimating because you essentially have to order on the spot while the server is holding the heavyish sign and you don't have any time to marinate on the menu. Fortunately you can ask for help and can't really go wrong. Our dishes were very well cooked and tasty. Would recommend if the wait isn't long! read more

This place offers a fantastic overview of Portuguese food in Lisbon. The wait was more than an hour - totally worth it, and easy to do in a neighborhood full of cheap fun bars. So many good dishes, it was hard to decide. The menu changes daily on a chalkboard, in Portuguese but happily translated to English by your server. They are smallish plates but very satisfying. We had mackerel crudo, seared corvina, seared filet mignon (they called it something else but that's what it obviously was), and pheasant stew. Everything was delicious, especially the corvina and steak. The dessert (a crumble cake with pumpkin compote) was great as well, as was the bottle of light red wine. 58 Euros for all of this is very much worth it. Doesn't look like much from the outside. Indeed it is a bit hard to see it. Very small. Maybe 8 tables at the most and most seat 2 so not good for big groups tho a party of four was there. You wait outside and they let you know how long it will be. We were lucky-seated right away at 1:30 on a Wednesday. Place stayed full the entire 90 minutes we were there. Service is great-casual yet intimate. Very few menu items tho always something vegetarian. They read them to you in English or Portuguese. We had two appetizers-the shishito peppers and the tuna croquettes. Both were reasonably sized and delicious. We shared the cod salad for lunch. Tastes better than it might sound-chickpeas, cod, egg and red onions in a light dressing. Dessert was the star-Rabanada d requeijao which was like French toast sort of with an amazing orange cheese alongside. Now those dishes may not be there when you go, but go you must. I don't know that I'd say this is a "must do" while in Lisbon, but if you are a foodie, it's a good solid option. I love A Taberna da Rua das Flores modern twisted on classical Portuguese dishes. There is the Menu of the Day the only menu that is available which features fresh and seasonal ingredients. No reservations taken, I would suggest drop by a little earlier and leave your name and they would give you and estimated time when your table will be ready. Menu in Portuguese only but our waiter was really nice and went through the whole menu in English which made our decision easier instead of just close our eyes and point. We ordered three items to share and most of the dish were enjoyable and the taste were quite unique with the use of different ingredients. Service is top notch! So glad we wandered into this restaurant on our first sleep-deprived day in Lisbon. At first I was a bit taken aback by the shabby-chic ambiance and the servers carrying around the menu on huge chalkboards. But once I adjusted, and peeped the dishes my fellow patrons were consuming, this turned out to be a great start to our vacation. Very nice place and good food offered. 5pm opens in afternoon, if arriving there just in a opening time you won't wait in a queue. They change menus every day. For this time, I highly recommend the duck with seaweeds and roasted vegetables. The duck is really muscular and tasty, seaweeds balance its flavor, like an Asian fusion. We came here our first night in Lisbon and were blown away -- not only by the food, but also by the atmosphere, the prices, and the service (relative to what is typical across Europe, although we found that the service was generally very good throughout Lisbon). (As one example of the latter -- the menu is just a board with probably 15-20 items on it. When we sat down, the waitress went through each one in English. When another couple sat down next to us, the same waitress then went through each item again, this time in French. Maybe that's more normal than I'm giving credit for, but I was seriously impressed.) Anyway, on the food -- we got the mackerel tartare, the ceviche, the tuna steak, and the fried goat cheese balls. The three fish dishes were all incredible -- absolutely top of the line seafood for (what we consider, being from New York) very low prices. I'm really not even sure which was my favorite, although it would probably be between the mackerel and the tuna. We were (somewhat surprisingly) stuffed by the time we got the cheese balls, and I'm not the biggest goat cheese fan to start with, but I still enjoyed them as well. This is one of the best places I've eaten at period. I would eat here over many of the Michelin restaurants I've had. It's a local food (ie they offer wine and food from close around the Lisbon area) and a rotating menu that constantly changes (so much so that they don't print out a menu but just have several chalk boards). The short of this review is this: if I'm ever in Lisbon again, I'd come here. Sure, the near 2.50 hour wait was bonkers (Monday). But the scallops were unreal, the tuna was a bit of a letdown, the okonomiyaki interpretation was nice and the cheesecake dessert was a nice finish. This upped the ante and got me more excited for my meal! The lunch menu was pretty limited which I was disappointed with. EDIT: OUR FAVORITE MEAL OF 2019!! So wonderful! Our 3 year old and 10 month old loved every single dish at this wonderful little restaurant. For that itself, this place is a winner! After a long day of wandering around Lisbon with two little ones, we didn't really look at reviews. We just showed up with our huge stroller and two tired kids. We were seated right away, and even though this place is not your every day 'show up with noisy kids' joint, the staff was wonderful, welcoming, and accommodating. They tucked our massive stroller away and made us super comfortable. Within minutes of us arriving, all 7 or so tables were suddenly full and the doors closed. Guess we got lucky!! The food was sublime and absolutely deserving of all the great reviews. As folks have noted, the menu changes every day. The small plates are brought out one at a time. A treat in itself, allowing us to savor each course. We had the grilled octopus with roasted chestnuts, deep fried mackerel, and chicken satay. All the food was beautiful, unpretentious, and simply excellent. But the mackerel was the best of it all- just a giant pile of the freshest little fish deep fried to perfection. We are realizing now that we got lucky even getting a table when we did (Friday night dinner). Overall, the welcoming staff, the awesome food, and the unexpected kid-friendly approach really puts this away as our favorite meal in Portugal. read more

It's our first night in Lisbon and we wanted to have something Portuguese. We found Taberna da Rua das Flores before we left on a couple websites... Eater I think, and we were excited to give it a shot. First off... Get there early. We put our name on the list when we arrived at about 6:30 and we had to wait for about 45 min before we were seated. They don't take card, so it's an opportunity to go and pull some out. Their menu changes daily and don't worry if you can't read it in Portuguese, they explain each dish to all their customers. We had a couple of wines by the glass and ordered razor clams, fried stingray, fried zucchini flowers (which, hyperbole be damned, we're one of the best things I've ever eaten), and pork ribs in a sweet soy sauce. We capped it all off with an amazing slice of chocolate cake. My God, was this place amazing. But again, get there early, get you name on the list, because we saw them turn away so many people, or tell people that they could expect to wait two send a half hours. read more

The best thing about this restaurant is the atmosphere. Very cozy and charming and feels like quintessential Lisbon! The food is pretty good, not great. What really irked me was this: We arrived at 7:15 and were told it would be over an hour's wait and to come back at 8:30 and we would be seated by 8:45. We were ok with that and went out for a drink while we waited. When we got back at 8:30, no tables were ready yet. A man standing outside the restaurant was having a glass of wine so we asked the server if we could get a glass too. She said no, it wasn't allowed which we would've been ok with if that was the rule (we didn't know what that man was doing there). But then he said, "I'm the owner and I'm going to break the rules for you. What kind of wine do you like?" After we told him he went into the kitchen and brought us one glass to share and we thanked him. How nice of him, right? I guess he left after that because we never saw him again the rest of the night. Then we waited a long time without getting seated--no apologies from the either of the two women working there--and we finally got seated nearly an hour later than we were told, at 9:30. Like I said earlier, the food was ok some dishes better than others but nothing amazing. Then when the bill came, they charged us for the glass of wine the owner brought us! I asked the server about that and she said, sort of nasty, "Well you had that glass while you were waiting." It was really the strangest thing ever! I would recommend Prado over this place by a long shot. The wait staff at Prado are so friendly and the food is much much better and you won't have to wait if you have a reservation (Taberna doesn't take them) and Prado was overall a great, fun experience (check out my review). read more

This restaurant feels like it's on the Michelin path in that it is a dining experience that made me feel more in touch with Lisbon and Portuguese culture. It is a small restaurant with 7 tables so if you are committed to eating here you must arrive at it slightly before their first seating at 5:00pm. The staff were lovely and walked us through the daily menu on a board. When we left at 6:30pm they were already running out of dishes because they may only serve a few portions of a given dish per night. We loved the experience of being there while actually having left disappointed by the food. It was good but none of the dishes we got was noteworthy. With the care that they appear to put into their restaurant I trust we just came on a slightly off day or ordered the least exciting items. I'd tell you what we got but the menu changes so regularly it wouldn't help. I'd be interested to return again to give the food a second try. I was excited to try this place due to the promising 4.5 star reviews. Instead, we walked away feeling that it was completely overrated, a little overpriced for Lisbon and totally not impressive. - Three out of the four dishes we ordered were not bad but not exceptional. - service was ok, they explained everything on the chalk board menus in English - The first two dishes came at without much delay but took FOREVER AND EVER for the third and fourth dishes to come out. As such, we spent 105 minutes at the restaurant for 4 small tapas (even though we could have finished in about 30-45 minutes). Not sure why the kitchen was so slow - not sure what is the first 4€ charge on the receipt since we were also charged 4€ for 2 bottles of refillable water - the mackeral tartare with seaweed, ginger, sesame was pretty good but not anything special. - the pink swordfish was a bit tough and the sauce tasted like chutney...not all that. - the stir fried tofu shreds with bean sprouts and bok choy took about 5 years to come out. Nice ish flavors but can't understand why an Asian stir fried dish would take that long to cook. - flank steak was over cooked and super tough. A hidden gem in the heart of Lisbon. One of the staff at the hostel I stayed at luckily recommended this restaurant! The restaurant is hidden off a busy plaza, and is absolutely adorable once you go in. It has a cozy, and elegant charm that enhances the dining experience. The menu is quite unique and you will definitely be able to try something you would never find in the states! The food comes as small tapa like plates so you can try multiple items on the menu. The staff were also very welcoming and did a fantastic job at translating the menu and explaining all the menu items. Also the staff made sure to address any food allergies and accommodate the dishes/point out which dishes fit your dietary restrictions. Eating dinner here was certainly a perfect way to spend my last night and Lisbon, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic meal!! read more

My wife and I and my 2 sisters shared 4 dishes: A cod salad with chickpeas, stewed beef with mash potatoes, grilled octopus served with spinach & roasted sweet potatoes and a roasted vegetable salad. Every dish was done to perfection and prepared with care. The ladies running the taberna all spoke English. They explained that they have a different chef for lunch and dinner and that the menu changes some every meal depending on the chef and availability of fresh local ingredients. We can't wait to go back again this week to try their other offerings. Dinner was fabulous! We ordered from a tapas style menu. Every dish was amazing. We started with a mackerel tartare - best mackerel I've ever eaten. We finished with a wonderful figs with goat cheese tapa that is out of this world. We have 5 more days in Lisbon. A truly phenomenal restaurant! You rock Babara! This is my favorite place in Lisboa and I found it by chance thanks to yelp! I was looking for seafood, looked it up. And came across this little gem. Came here around 4:30 pm. It's in between late lunch and dinner. In between the lines out the door-oh so crazy time. So in between, there was no one in the place when I first arrived. But within twenty minutes, this place filled up. And was packed for the day! Ahh. Staffs - everyone is oh so nice, friendly and speak perfect english! Not that english speaking should be your prirority when exploring a foreign land but it helps immensely. And they are all so nice with amazing recommendations. Menu- each waiter bright this giant chalk board with the menu of the day. Each waiter know what's in each dishes. They will explain it all. The chalk board isn't that tiny either. It's as big as me if not bigger. They have about 15-20 items on there. I think I tried at least 90% of the menu. And I still didn't get enough! Drinks - wine wine and more wine. I love homemade wine. I often ask for house wine to get a taste of local wine. We had a good 2-3 bottles of their house red. It was nice, spicy and rich. Perfect to pair with all of their food. And also perfect for winter. yummmm! Now lets talk food. This is Portugal. They are more diverse than most places. No really! Think of all your favorite dishes from around the world, and add little tasty magical touches on it. And viola! They had about 20 items on the menu on my first visit here. I had 18!! They are tapas style and most are small portion. Except the steak! That was big! Best - they have a poke/sashimi style dish with amazing fish, seaweeds and dried shrimps on it. It tasted wayyyyyyy better than it sounds. So refreshing, tasty and amazing. Steak frites - this was super rich and super taste. Steak is so lean and prepared right. Pho ca- this was my favorite. So good, I had it twice in one night. Think your regular pho but small. Add seafood, tomates and few portugese spices. Wow! It is amazing. So fresh, to tasty. So beyond great. Just a perfect amount of noodles and seafood. I also had a few meat, chicken piri piri, seafood dishes I can't recall. But all were so wonderfully amazing. Paired it all with their homemade red wine! Ahhhh it was magic. So magical, I even had a dessert to prolong this amazing dining experience. Such a beautiful setting, beautiful food and great service! Ahhhh! It's a must!!! A total must. This was one of my favorite meals on our trip to Europe. We came here at 9:30 pm on a Monday night, thinking we had beat the dinner rush but we were wrong - they quoted us an hour wait. It was totally worth the wait, and once they gave us 1/2 liter of wine for 5€ which we could drink outside the restaurant while waiting, the time passed by pretty quickly. The ambiance inside is fairly dark and intimate, with candles and space for around 30 people. It's not very big and most tables are meant for 2 or 4 people, so if you have more than 4 people, you may want to go elsewhere. They don't have printed menus, and everything is written on a chalkboard and the waiter comes and tells you about their dishes. I am pretty sure the dishes rotate fairly frequently which is great. Mackerel Tartare - I don't really like mackerel, but this was really delicious and not super "fishy-tasting" like most mackerel is. It was served on top of a bed of seaweed, some tomatoes and sesame seeds sprinkled on top and on the sides. I'd recommend getting this if you like tuna tartare and the sort. Scallops wrapped in bacon - Normally, when I order scallops, I'm used to one or two scallops for a lot of money. This dish came with 4 scallops, decently sized, wrapped with bacon on top of some creamy sauce. This was probably our favorite dish of the night. Make sure you get this if you like scallops and/or bacon! Seared Tuna - This was good, but probably my least favorite dish of the bunch because I prefer my tuna to be more rare, and this was pretty cooked all the way through. I'd probably choose something different next time. Flourless Chocolate Cake - They were out of the passionfruit dessert I wanted to try (we did eat here late), so we opted for the chocolate cake instead. My boyfriend loved this dessert, and I love anything chocolate, so this was a win. It was rich, dense, and chocolatey, with powdered sugar sprinkled on top. I'd definitely come back here again if I come back to Lisbon and have recommended to a few people. For the quality of the food, it's reasonably priced - we probably spent around 50 or 60 euros for 2 people, which also included 1L of house wine. Just be prepared to wait at least an hour during dinner time, but know that the time can be passed quickly if you order wine to drink outside! read more

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I am a repeat eater. If I love it, I'll be back. Sometimes in the same day. Sometimes in the same 2-3 days. As for this place? This place is incredible. So good we went back TWICE! We went right at the start of our trip for dinner and then on our last day, we went again for lunch. Had we been around for dinner, I would have gone back. Yes. It was that good. The service here is incredible. Even when they have a liiiiiiiiiiine out the door, they are kind and sweet and will bring you wine. Uhm. YES. AMAZING. And we waited 1.5 hours for dinner but it was so worth it! So yes, this means they don't take reservations but it's worth the wait- so don't get impatient and wait it out! The menu changes almost daily depending on what they get at the market and all of it is good. ALL OF IT. I know, there's a lot of caps in this reviews and lots of !!!!!! but the whole experience of eating here was incredible. For dinner, we had the clams with bits of fatty bacon in a delicious broth. Their version of fish and chips and a side of vegetables. And dessert was their famous cheese, honey and almonds. All of this was incredible. I can't repeat that enough! For lunch a few days later, we got the squid ink pasta with clams and the salmon which was perfectly pink in the center! Again.. it was incredible. A bit of a tip, if you go early enough, like.. 6.30 to 7PM, it's pretty chill and you don't need to wait. If you want dinner from 8 to 10PM, well, get ready to chill and take in the surrounds because everyone in Lisbon wants to eat here. OR you could do the lunch thing, again with a different daily lunch menu and no wait at all. Oh! And the bread, olives and oil. You get it immediately when you sit down- if you don't touch it, you won't be charged. So it's up to you if you want it or not! Each plate was thoughtfully created, elegantly arranged, and brought by friendly staff with none of the attitude I have come to expect from trendy little restaurants in Washington and New York (yes, especially Ines!). Stopped by on two occasions and the whole waiting list is ridiculous, you need to jump through hoops to eat here. -1st time came on a saturday at 6:30pm and they weren't taking anymore guests on the waiting list. -2nd time (wednesday), called ahead and was instructed we could come at 6 and put our name on the list. but when we came a little past 6pm, they said they don't take names until all tables are taken, and that they weren't even open yet? You could blame the misunderstanding the 2nd time on language since neither my husband or I speak fluent portugese, but i left defeated. Wow! This place was pretty impressive, definitely my top eating spot in Lisbon! We got there at around 19.15 on a Tuesday night and put our name in the book for a 45-60 min wait. We strolled down the hill to the Time Out Mercado da Ribiera and grabbed a beer from the do-it-yourself tap. By the time we got back we had burned off enough hill climbing calories to feel guilt free ordering to our hearts content. :) And we did! Everything is served tapas style and our waiter recommended we order around 5 dishes. The place is tiny and seating is very limited but the wait is soooo worth it. How I wish we had discovered this place in our first night! Food was delicious, the presentation was beautiful, the service flawless. read more

We stayed on the same block of this small neighborhood eatery and it was an amazing meal shared with friends. They only have limited space so expect to wait. We put our names down and went back to where we were staying for 1.5 hours. The menu is always changing day to day or hour to hour depending on what they have but trust -- it's all good. Had a few delicious vegetarian options for our friend (which hasn't always been easy in Portugal).. should be 5.5 stars!! read more
