PRETZEL BITES
Alyssa T.

We visited Sweetwater Tavern twice during our stay in Chicago because it was conveniently located near our hotel, and we're glad we did! The menu features classic American cuisine that's a step above your typical "tavern" food, with plenty of delicious options to choose from. The service was outstanding on both visits. Our servers were friendly, outgoing, and offered excellent recommendations that helped make each meal even better. Everything we ordered was delicious, but the standout for us was definitely the pretzel bites with beer cheese--they're a must-try! If you're looking for a casual spot with elevated American comfort food, great service, and a welcoming atmosphere, Sweetwater Tavern is well worth a visit.

The food here is is amazingly amazing, Vetto was our waiter and he was superb, the ambiance was terrific. I love all the tv's I was able to watch the Bears game on many screens. My drinks were great.

On a long weekend for St. Patrick's Day amidst a crazy busy crowd - I'd argue this was our best meal of the four days we spent in the Windy City. All three of our crew loved their dishes - including a few specific to St. Pats (the Irish Mac and cheese). I, of course, had the cajun chicken linguini. It really hit the spot after not having pasta since home. Not overly spicy - but the sriracha cream sauce caught my attention right away - great flavor! There was a large volume of peppers and onions and a smaller amount of chicken - but overall it balanced well. Check out Sweetwater if you are in town!

We walked from The Navy Pier and needed to stop for some late night bites because we were naturally hungry. The late hours really was a winner. We were seated and received good service. Our food came out pretty quickly. The restaurant has a full bar, music and dim lighting. This was my first time dining at this restaurant chain so I will definitely return.

Stopped in to watch a sports game, and they hooked us up with a booth with a personal TV - score! We ordered pretzel bites and my partner had a few beers. They were out of the first beer he ordered, the back up IPA option was ok. Service was prompt for the most part. Pretzel bites were really tasty but needed more cheese sauce for the portion! Bill was higher than expected for what we ordered. Overall it was a solid place to watch the game, really appreciated the booth view of TV.

Sweetwater Tavern was a disappointing experience. Before I dive into the negatives I'll highlight the pros of the restaurant. The inside of Sweetwater Tavern is massive, so they could easily accommodate a variety of party sizes. The Strawberry Basil Margarita I ordered was strong and tasty. The biggest disappointment is that they don't have a happy hour. My friend and I only visited Sweetwater Tarvern because we were interested in going to a happy hour. On their website it states to ask the bartender about their happy hour specials but the bartender told us they don't have happy hour. We opted to stay since it was late and we would miss any other happy hour in the area. The food was subpar at best. I ordered the Nashville popcorn chicken and it came out fast. I will say the chicken tastes like how they make it in Nashville, extremely spicy but flavorless. I could only eat a few before deciding it wasn't worth it anymore. For the price of the dish ($14-$16) they should take a few moments to season the food. The chicken tasted like frozen chicken so I don't recommend it. Overall the drinks were decent, but for the price I rather find a place that has equally good drinks and food.

My review is based on service, not the food. I'd give the food an 8/10 just because the meat was missing tenderness. It was flavored well however it was dry and I would've loved some broth to go with it even though I know it's a flatbread. I also had the bottlenectar beer, which I highly recommend. We arrived after 11pm, close to last call and our server, you could tell was not happy. Walking to this location wasn't the best idea but it was 12min from the hotel and from the moment we walked in we felt rushed. At that point we should've known better and gotten a pizza somewhere to go. We were halfway through our meal when the sever came up and placed the ticket on the table. No big deal we kept eating and talking. She came up a couple minutes later and goes so we closed 2 minutes ago and I'd like to check out now. Wow! I am not used to that kind of service. I understand people want to go home but definitely not what I want after a day of travel. Needless to say it didn't leave any good vibes or needing to go back.

I hadn't been to Sweetwater in quite some time but decided to stop in before seeing Gary Owen at the Chicago Theatre. We arrived about an hour before the show and were seated promptly. We had a reservation too. though. The restaurant was crowded, but our server greeted us fairly quickly. He was affable, attentive, and efficient. The menu isn't as expansive as in years past, so I just opted for the burger with fries. It was better than I anticipated. It was tender and flavorful. The fries were good too. My brother had the bang bang shrimp which he really enjoyed as well. I had a piece of shrimp but I didn't care for the sauce that was poured over it. The shrimp itself tasted fine. We had drinks as well, but I can't recall exactly what my brother ended up getting. He asked our waiter to surprise him. He didn't like his drink, so we traded. I ordered the spicy margarita but didn't care for it. The atmosphere was lively, but it still felt cozy. Turns out Sweetwater is still a solid place to have a drink, catch a game, or enjoy dinner.

Stopped in for lunch with coworkers from our Chicago hotel. Was within walking distance, that was good with the cold weather. Inside decor was very nice. Service was great as well. I got sweet water burger with tots. It was cooked perfect and great flavor. Thick burger non of this smash crap. Tots was crispy.

While our waiter as ok, when my salad arrived it already had the dressing mixed into the WHOLE salad! The waiter stated it is that way unless the customer indicates they want it in the side. How am I supposed to request on the side if it's not indicated on their menu it's tossed in????? I read the menu again before writing this review and it's not indicated anywhere the dressing is premixed into the salad! This is a very dumb practice! Prices are very high as well. No thanks!

Always a favorite stop for us! They consistently have the Hefeweizen we love, and the food never disappoints. Highly recommend the burgers, they're absolutely delicious. If you visit during brunch, don't miss the mimosa flights and the Bloody Mary that's practically a meal on its own. Plenty of seating options, including a great bar area, so you'll always feel comfortable.

Looked like a great patio spot so we stopped here while deciding how to spend the rest of the day. Appetizers: Bang bang shrimp 4/5 Fries 4/5 Baked spinach dip: ooh the bread is Soo good 5/5 cocktail: blueberry mint G&T: Botanist gun, blueberry syrup, mint, lemon juice and tonic water 10/10. Not a gin girlie but I really loved how refreshing this one was. Patio: nice and breezy with street views

I think there were some kind of corporate happy hour happening in the back, but a friend and myself just came in for quick drinks. I usually don't drink on the weekdays, so I ended up just getting an iced tea and him a tequila soda, but because I don't drink, we decided to get an appetizer and we browsed the menu for a minute and ended up splitting the Parmesan chicken egg rolls. Truthfully, I really just wanted to see what that would entail because it seemed a little disgusting or maybe even some kind of high-food, but to my surprise, it was actually a really crispy skinned pizza roll. I'm pretty sure it had been previously frozen, but in that moment- served with a side of marinara, I didn't really care. It was full of gooey melted mozzarella cheese and almost like a breaded chicken nugget center. Pretty decent as far as bar food goes. They also had crab rangoon to which I thought, "hmm are they doing a little too much?!" I'm sure drunk me would have gotten them years ago so what can ya do. Overall, quite a positive experience. The bartender was really sweet and everything wasn't super expensive. I've been in the neighborhood for such a long time, but I've actually never been here and I'm glad I came on a night that it wasn't chaotic.

I want to preface my review with the positives, Londyn was our server & was truly so kind, thorough, and friendly. The restaurant itself is clean & all tables have clear views of the TVs on game days. Now for the room for improvement- the food was very underwhelming. Being from the Chicago area previously, I regularly advocate for the Chicago food scene, and this unfortunately did not meet those standards. We ordered the Brussels sprouts, buffalo cauliflower, wings, and sesame ginger salad: -Brussel sprouts: tasted like they weren't seasoned just air fried and drenched in balsamic dressing -Buffalo cauliflower: soggy, unseasoned, runny buffalo sauce -Wings: PERFECTLY CRISPY, but no flavor (we ordered lemon pepper & buffalo) -Sesame ginger salad: sloppy mix of vegetables tossed in an overly sweet sauce with no sesame or ginger flavor in sight If you're not going to eat, this is probably a great spot, but from a food standpoint, there is room for improvement.

The first thing I noticed walking in was the ambiance. Nice decor with a city hotspot feel. We had a teen and tween with us and both found something on the menu. Most of us ordered bowls with sesame sauce which were delicious. We each ordered different meats with our bowls and no complaints. My son had a crispy chicken sandwich which he devoured and my daughter had a quesadilla which they prepared especially for her without any sauce. Everything was tasty. We had a problem with our order when my daughter found a small piece of plastic wrapper in her food. We told our waiter and he immediately informed management. The manager came over and offered a new plate but my daughter was fine having the current plate. So instead, she comped her meal and gave her a choice of dessert with a gigantic milk. Despite the minor glitch, this place deserves 5 stars for the way they handled this issue. We feel they went above and beyond to remedy the situation. If only all restaurant management were like this. If we are ever in Chicago again, we will be back.

Travel is hell when you have celiac. I am sensitive to the parts per million level and one bad bite…read moreof food can keep me up all night, or send me to bed or the hotel bathroom for days. I will spare the details. I am not a gluten free trendy who has a pastry for desert; this is an issue that's followed me my whole life. Usually when trveling, I end up eating carrots, rotisserie chicken and coldcuts when my supply of hard boiled eggs runs out. Every now and then I hit the jackpot. I arrived in Chicago on a Thrusday afternoon in September and first thing, set out around the neighborhood to find a restaurant where I might be able to eat. All the usual kinds of places (naerly all of them corporate) were out of the discussion when I spotted Doc Bs at 55 E. Grand Ave. The exterior was low-key but for some reason I was drawn to it. I went in to check the place out. Usually this part of the discussion goes like a legal deposition. "What do you know, and how do you know it?" I asked for a menu; I was handed one and began to read carefully. Among other things, they offered a kind of rice bowl dish, a bit like hot poke (the Wok Out Bowl). It came with a diversity of sauces -- Curry, Sesame Teriyaki , Sweet & Spicy Thai, etc. I said, "Which of these sauces has no gluten?" "All of them," said someone named Cassandra, responding in a confident voice. She was the general manager. "Our company takes food sensitivity very seriously. We also have gluten free deep fryers." I pushed a little harder: Cassanda said she could account for every ingredient in every dish on the menu. Right away I was having a 1 in 1000 expeience. Even in the top tier of places aware of the gluten issue (which is no longer vogue), I am often saved by a server who has a clue what goes into the food. Cross-contamination is an issue; as is ignorance about product. Gluten-safe dining is usually based on a stripped down menu; and some places commit outright fraud by neglecting to mention known issues in the kitchen but still saying GF on the menu. My theory of keeping gluten out of restaurant food is **start with none, and add it only where you need it**, which is nearly in nothing. She said that's exactly what we do. My second theory of gluten free is **parity of experience**. That means that everyone at the table has an equivalent experience. The whole table does not enjoy sumptuous deserts while the GF person gets canned pears. At Doc B's I could eat anything on the menu, including French fries and chips and salsa (small, taken-for-granted pleasures by most diners). My third theory of gluten free dining is **no gluen free upcharge.** It's tacky, and adds insult to injury (especially when a GF bun or bread is subpar, as was NOT the case at Doc B's). Doc B's got 100% on all counts. That and the food was consistently excellent. I ate there seven times over five days trying many things (but having a lot of Wok Out bowls). I sent several people and brought four different friends, one of whom had such such extreme dietary restrictions he could usually order an apple. They accommodated him perfectly, with a positive attitude. And there you have it. This gets the highest possible rating from the Gluten Avenver -- seven stars. -- Eric F Coppolino

Luckily the window high top bar-seats were available. Not great for catching up in conversation over a meal, but it was better than the a fast food place nearby. The food was great! We had the guacamole as an appetizer - if you don't like cilantro - you will want to avoid it. It was an interesting appetizer, as it came with sweet potato chips. Both were good...not sure it pairs well. (I saved the guacamole for my burger) I had the wedge burger, primarily for the egg. It was great! The burger was perfectly cooked as was the sunny side up egg. I ordered it with a side of fries. Perfectly cooked fries. They give huge portions. I was able to share with my friends. I ordered a cranberry and tonic for a beverage. It was great, however, they served it in a "bar" glass, so it was not a lot of liquid. I had to order two. I prefer pint glasses for non-alcohol beverages. Tasted great, just needed more. Prices are reasonable for a city restaurant. Without tip for 4 adults, 4 entrees and 1 appetizer and soda-water beverages. It came to about $130. Parking...If you can walk or take a ride share. It's the city and parking options aren't great.

Alas, although not totally misled by the reviews, the place was good but not great, perhaps the least favourite of our meals during this 6 day trip to Chicago. We reserved at 4 pm but the place gets quite busy. Do know when you reserve, you are charged a $10 per person cancellation fee. Because past reviews said their fee was not refunded, I made sure to make a note with the hostess to ensure my refund. It did appear within a few days on my credit card. Purple Pig has a Mediterranean menu and has daily specials. Many plates are meant to be shared. The space is a combination of regular tables, high tops and a long bar. Our initial server was pretty helpful. However, he disappeared mid-meal; apparently there was a shift change which he did not announce to us, nor did he introduce us to his replacement server, who only appeared when I asked for our waiter. The most attentive staff were the bus people. Here's what we ordered, with recommendations from our (first) waiter as to how much to order: 1) Grilled broccoli. Anchovy vinaigrette, apples, garlic and breadcrumbs. Fine. 2) Bucatini. This was a daily special. It was supposed to come with guanciale, onions, tomatoes and basil. What we got instead was the other pasta special, which was spaghetti with lobster, green beans and tomatoes. This confusion was when we asked for our waiter and had the replacement waiter appear like a stranger at our table. We ended up getting comped the lobster pasta and also received our original order. It also looked like spaghetti, not bucatini, but the ingredients were as expected. Both pastas were fine. I did not notice any green beans in the lobster pasta. Note both pastas were served with a HUGE pepper (poblano?) on top and we were warned they could be spicy. 3) Half duck. Greek yogurt, smoked trout roe + brioche buns. A huge serving. The duck was glazed with a sweet glaze, which I preferred to the yogurt. The alleged brioche buns (there were 3!) tasted not like buttery brioche, but like day-old supermarket dinner rolls. I only took home the unfinished duck, but even that had a strange texture. 4) Halibut. With potatoes, tomatoes, olives, fennel and lobster butter sauce. Only got a taste of this, it was okay. An adjacent table ordered a pistachio panna cotta for dessert that looked good, but perhaps overpriced at $21, so we passed. Again, a good but not great meal. I would return, but would try other things.
