We couldn't leave Chicago without trying a Chicago-style hot dog, so we stopped by Chicago Brewhouse and wow. Not only was the hot dog and chips absolutely fire, but the location is hard to beat. The food was very underwhelming here, but the views and ambiance were 10/10. I ordered a chicken shawarma and the chicken was severely dry. I had to request additional sauce for the chicken because it was very bland and unseasoned. The pita itself was very delicious and the veggies and fixings were great. They topped it with crumbled falafel which was a nice touch. My friend ordered the hot dog and didn't necessarily rave about it. Our meals kind of upset our stomachs afterwards. The dish consisted of a giant fried pita balanced atop a bed of stale potato chips, approximately one ounce of unseasoned shredded chicken, half of a falafel in crumbled form, iceberg lettuce, and a symbolic gesture of tzatziki sauce. The tzatziki was present only in the philosophical sense. Most impressively, every ingredient managed to avoid contact with salt, pepper, garlic, lemon, herbs, spices, or flavor of any kind. It was as though the kitchen had declared war on seasoning. The potato chips were stale. The chicken was dry. The lettuce was iceberg. The falafel was reduced to evidence. There were plenty of seats where they could have been split up and sat separately and paid separate tabs just as if they had come independently. We went here for lunch after walking around the whole stretch of the riverwalk as it's right next to it. They have both outdoor and indoor seating. We sat inside because it was a bit chilly even though it was bright and sunny. We ordered the footlong hot dog and the street corn on the cob skewers. Also the carnitas tacos. The hot dog was good. The corn had seasoning that was a bit too salty. So we scraped off all the seasoning from the corn and then ate it. Tacos were okay. Service was good. This place is a tourist trap. The drinks are very expensive even for one of the riverside establishments. We tried to get tap water with our drinks but we're told they only had bottle water which was $3.50 a bottle. My friend and I checked and restaurants serving food in Chicago have to have potable water and aren't allowed to refuse you access to it. When we talked to the manager he said they were classified as a venue so didnt have to provide that service. I would suggest going down less than 4 mins further east to The Northman Beer garden. Their drinks were 1 to 2 dollars cheaper and they did have complimentary water with the same view of the riverside. read more

The food wasn't remarkable by any stretch, but hit the spot after a busy day. The kids had hot dogs and pretzels, and I had a chicken falafel pita. Quite filling and not too unhealthy for a night out which was a plus. While I had made a reservation, I don't think we actually needed it. They turn people over pretty quick here with the limited menu and quickly served beers, so you're likely not waiting forever unless it's just the perfect night to be out. Sometimes when you want to sit on the water, you really pay a premium, and I didn't find that to be the case here. We stopped at the Chicago Brewhouse because it was right along the water, had outdoor seating available, and a decent beer selection. The food menu and pricing was as expected for the location. It wasn't cheap, but wasn't too expensive either. We ordered the jumbo pretzel and gyro sliders. Neither were anything to write home about, but were ok for pre dinner snacks. The gyro sliders needed some more flavor and the pretzel needed some more cheese on the side. Both came out hot, though, and pretty quickly considering how busy they were. Sitting outside was the move. We had an umbrella, a breeze, and the ability to people watch everyone going up and down the Riverwalk. The carrots on top of it weren't even pickled like they are supposed to be on a Banh Mi. It was definitely not worthy of being called Banh Mi. The service - OMG, don't even get me started. The river walk closes at 11PM, but they started rushing us off of the patio at 10:30PM. One busser took our water before we stopped them, and then they picked my phone up off of the table without asking. I have never felt so rushed in my life. This is the kind of experience that would usually cause me to give only one star, but their beer selection saved them - especially the Hefeweizen they had that night. My fiance and I stopped here on a Friday night so we could sit by the water and relax. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the large amount of outdoor seating by the water. Each beer was at least $10/ 16 oz. Pour, with our 4 beers totaling about $44 by the end of our visit. Our waiter was very friendly, energetic, and attentive. My criticisms are that the beer was not good. The Hefeweizen did not taste like a Hefeweizen and alll of their beer selections tasted more tart than they should be. The cider tasted like apple cider vinegar and was tough to choke down. We also opted not to eat any food there because of the prices. We're from Washington DC where were used to expensive food and beer prices, but the price didn't seem worth the food we were seeing.
