We've driven past Sweet Old Bill's many nights and been intrigued by the outward appearance. We finally decided to stop and try it out. Most unimpressive was the service. The staff all seemed bored or unhappy, looking at their feet and mumbling. Even the one wearing a "manager" label acted this way. The food came quick but was unremarkable. The Cole slaw was nasty, too heavy on the mayo and tasted like it had been uncovered in a fridge for several days. Our server was unaware of current beer tap offerings and not helpful. The mixed drink was mediocre. The building itself was nice and attractive, but between lackluster service and mediocre food/drink, we were disappointed and not likely to return. read more

I have been in High Point for 5 years and never been here. I have heard it was good and it was! We came for lunch. I ordered the salad since I had a big breakfast. The fried goat cheese was too die for! The vinaigrette was a little on the salty side but still yummy. I had the Foothills pumpkin beer since it is Fall Only bummer is they don't do beer flights. I did try my husband's bbq and it had a lot of flavor and was not dry. The homemade coleslaw was very good as well, so were the hush puppies. Apart from the barbecue, my husband ordered the brisket the brisket was cooked to perfection. it practically melted in your mouth. The mac & cheese had a great taste, but it was slightly on the dry side. For dessert, we got the banana pudding, which was delectable however, I prefer big pieces of Nilla wafers in my banana pudding, and this one had them chopped up into little pieces. A delicious meal at Sweet Old Bill's. We did not have reservations but they were able to seat us with only a 5 minute wait. Our server was absolutely wonderful. I did not get his name but he had a salt and pepper beard and provided stellar service. We were visiting for a wedding and wanted to get BBQ. He kept our glasses filled the entire time. BBQ was insanely good. Ribs are only served on Friday and Saturday and thankfully we showed up on Friday night. I got the big boy which gives you 3 meats and 2 sides. Tons of food at a great value. Sweet bills is in high point and was pretty aesthetically pleasing. Not too much to holler about. I ordered the burger that had goat cheese on it. The burger was pretty tasty. The fries were good. The pork skins were amazing. The only downside to this place was that there were gnats everywhere and the entire time you were eating you were fighting off the gnats. Service was pretty friendly and efficient, although our server kept giving us very odd. Looks every time they come to the table. Not too bad to grab a quick burger, but I probably wouldn't come back to eat inside unless they were able to control the bug problem. read more

This S.O.B. is a place where on any given visit you could say either.. S.O.B!! That was delicious! or S.O.B... this wasn't what I had hoped for. So to those in charge of this S.O.B. I implore you to find out where the inconsistency is happening so that I can trust you as a go to place for consistently good food! Thankfully, today, I am here to write about the ideal experience. Where the food comes out hot, the service is friendly and prompt, and the meat is not dry in any form. Specifically, want to speak for my favorite item on the menu... the brisket nachos. Y'all, when this place is on, and those shredded bits of beef brisket are tender, this is an appetizer built for kings that can also easily be two meals for someone. The key to greatness is a thick and flavorful queso, tasty crema, and an outstanding chimichurri recipe that I would love to have a copy of. Pair these on a good beef day, and S.O.B!! This stuff is amazing!! Also, I'm a big fan of a Reuben, and this was one of the better ones I have had. Good portion of meat (house smoked pastrami), melted swiss, right balance of sauerkraut and 1000 island dressing on toasted marbled rye bread. Bingo. Way to go S.O.B!! Again though, it just doesn't get executed every time on the meats. More care needs to be taken to ensure they don't get dry, especially brisket which is prone to it. This was perhaps our last time at SOB's but it was our best. With the graduation today of our beautiful niece (Lexi Jack) from High Point University, we may not be this way again. We had an expanding group of HPU graduates and family members at our large table and Emily handled things flawlessly. The food was delicious. I had the wings with sirraccha sauce and a huge wedge salad. The salad even had some small, crunchy onion rings in it instead of bacon. My dear wife had a pulled pork platter which was melt-in-your-mouth good along with collard greens and sweet potato casserole. Hubby grew up visiting family in the area, and was craving some local barbecue. We saw this place earlier, and the motel manager recommended it, so we came for an early dinner, and it was an EXCELLENT choice! We started with drinks, a Heineken (unusual!) for Hubby and a Strawberry Rita for me. He ordered a sliced brisket plate with mac and cheese and green beans, while I chose the 1/2 pound pulled pork plate with tomato pie and sweet potato fries. Both plates came with a complimentary small cup of coleslaw. Service was fast, and the food was delicious! The tomato pie was fabulous and unlike any other tomato pie I have eaten. The beans were good and the Mac and cheese was was next level. The service was decent but the back row we sat on had a leak about. My mom mentioned it but didn't seem to bad. I tried Sweet Old Bill's to go tonight and was not disappointed. I had the BBQ plate with fries and baked beans. Everything was still warm when I arrived home and tasted good. The BBQ was a little dry and they did not include any type of BBQ sauce. I used my own sauce at home and BBQ. Was perfect. The fries were very tasty and the baked beans were terrific. We stopped at Sweet Old Bills to check off another spot on the barbecue bingo going on in High Point. It was a great visit. Sometimes when we go there's a very long wait but not on this occasion. It's a quiet Thursday that feels like a Friday. The weather is turning slightly to the autumn cool, and it seems most of High Point has left for the beach or the mountains. This is a perfect day to try Sweet Old Bill's, which usually has customers spilling out of its open windows and patio area. I was seated inside at a booth by friendly and attentive staff. I was apprehensive after reading reviews reflecting service can be hit or miss. I guess I chose a 'hit' day. The menu looked so good and I finally settled on brisket, a personal favorite and recommendation of the waitress. Food came out quickly and was absolutely scrumptious. The sweet potato fries were perfect and needed no dipping sauce. The cowboy sandwich with very light bbq and cole slaw, (lightly pickled?) red onion and fresh jalapeño on a toasted bun was so good I ate the entire sandwich. Don't know how I'll stay awake at work now. Hehe. The check was brought out quickly and the waitress checked on me several times. It was a peaceful lunch up until the end. At that point I got my money's worth with lunch and a show. An angry 'Karen' barged in from the patio and was screaming at the wait staff in a very quiet restaurant. She was using every foul word she could think of and I couldn't help but think she was acting in this over-the -top display. Her beef with the wait staff was that they weren't fast enough with her split bill from what I could gather between F bombs and exclamations that she spends thousands of dollars there. I felt sorry for the staff and manager who all kept their cool and treated her with respect. They all deserve 5 stars today. read more

We tried the pork rinds with beer cheese. If you love pork rinds I would order them. There were very fresh and the cheese yummy. I ordered the smoked chicken with tomato pie and corn pudding. You also get a little slaw with your meal. It was a little too tangy for me. The corn pudding was really good and it was not too sweet. (3.75 stars) Sweet Old Bill's had been on my to-try list for quite some time, but mixed reviews made it less than a top priority. After finally hitting it up for takeout, I'm glad that I did. It isn't the best barbeque in the area, and it will probably drive diehard Lexington traditionalists up the wall, but it's tasty and well-rounded. Sweet Old Bill's bills (pardon the redundancy) itself as "burgers, brew, and cue" and a good assortment of all three can be found here. The menu boasts everything from the requisite pulled pork or chicken (in sandwich or platter format) to homemade pork skins, redneck charcuterie, and more than a half-dozen burgers. There are also several salads and a Tree Hugger veggie burger for those so inclined. My wife and I opted to split a large brisket nachos and a pulled pork platter with tomato pie and sweet potato fries as the sides. Everything was ready when I arrived for pick-up, and though I didn't linger long, the restaurant looked like the kind of place that would either be a lot of fun or headache-inducingly loud at full capacity. Staff were friendly, and they appeared to be following COVID precautions. The sides outshine the meats at Sweet Old Bill's, and that may be the cause of some of the mixed reviews. That isn't to say that the meats are bad - they are neither tough nor completely flavorless - but rather that no one will confuse them for Black Powder Smokehouse's offerings. The gooey, cheesy tomato pie is transcendent and the sweet potato fries are better than most. The nachos come nicely loaded with corn, black beans, jalapenos, and cheese, but the chimichurri is the flavor that stands out the most, for better or worse. There are cheaper options than Sweet Old Bill's, but you get a good amount of food for your money. The $12 pulled pork plate included a half pound and two sides while the $14 large nachos yielded two entrée-sized portions (and leftovers). It's just kind of mediocre. The environment is loud and cold. The service was okay. I don't blame the serving staff. When we were walking in, a girl was walking out that was definitely over served. The parking isn't very good either. I don't plan on going back. Not impressed at all with it. It just isn't worth it. I expected more. Sweet Old Bills is a staple! I have been numerous of times and every time I have a great experience. I tried the ever fresh salad for the first time and it was delicious. In the past I've gotten the yard bird, tomato salad, pulled chicken/pork plate and those have all been very yummy. We also tried their brand new cheese curds which were so delicious. My new favorite place in High Point! My favorite has been Tipsyz Tavern and they are now a close second. This place caught me off guard and I want to go back tomorrow! We arrived and were seated right away. The parking lot is small and I was worried the place was packed full because of how many cars were outside! But the place is large and we didn't wait. Nate served us and he did a good job. We had everything we needed or asked for during our visit. We ordered Brisket Nachos and a Pimento Bacon Burger to split. Both were very solid choices and we ate every bite!! It is a nice clean restaurant with a great menu full of options. They even offered a touch free menu to order drinks which was Covid friendly. Sweet Old Bill's has been open about 3 months, and offers a variety of smoked meats, typical of the recent influx of smoked meat emporiums that seem to be everywhere. And like most of them, there is some good, some bad, and some ugly, because when you try to be all things to all people, it rarely works out across the board, and that is especially true when it comes to barbecue - one size does not fit all! This is an acknowledged, certified old fart review - I am that, don't deny it, openly embrace it! I have spent a considerable segment of my life eating barbecue - Eastern NC (old school, cooked over hardwood coals is my favorite & most frequent), NC Lexington (next), Memphis (Charlie Vergos Rendezvous, Corky's and more) , KC, SC (even some of that mustard based crap), Georgia, Alabama (bbq pork and bbq chicken with white sauce, Dreamland ribs), Texas Brisket (especially the Ft Worth and New Braunfels areas), barbecued mutton in Kentucky, and even barbecued baby goat in Mexico. All this has done one thing, and one thing only - it has defined my personal tastes and preferences for smoked meats. Palates vary and that is just the way it is, obviously some like the barbecue here. The smoked meats that I tried here (pulled pork, beef brisket, and pork ribs) are a mixed bag, and the best of the lot (the ribs) is only on the low end of good - all pretty typical of this style barbecue restaurant, much like Mac's Speed Shop & others of that ilk, but not quite at that level, frankly. The pulled pork ( was relatively tender, though the texture of pulled pork is not something I find enjoyable on the average, and this version was unsauced out of the kitchen for the most part, and was especially bland Liberal doses of the table barbecue sauce, salt, and hot sauce helped, but you're really just masking the lack of smoked pork flavor - almost literally putting lipstick on the pig, as it were! At $12 for the pork and 2 sides, it is not an inexpensive lunch alternative! The brisket was overcooked, dry, and lacked tenderness, with too much char for my tastes - burnt ends are one thing, this was overkill. The ribs, as I said were average, but at least were not drenched in a sweet, sticky sauce. The combo platter of ribs and burnt brisket was $16, also not much of a value meal! The sides - fries, collards, slaw, potato salad, and baked beans - were generally in line with meat, average or less. The place is attractive, the service attentive, but I came for the food, and left with more disappointment than anything else. read more
