We visited on Friday evening just as the dinner rush was starting. Our server was very friendly and efficient. It is on open concept however the booths are roomy and offered enough separation the noise level was not at all bothersome. We ordered our drinks and the onion dip appetizer and that was very good. For entrees we got the SOB burger and meatloaf sandwich. Both were very good and hand made patties. We had intended on ordering desert but were too full to order anything. It was horrible. Bottom line, the food was inedible. My tomato pie was mushed into a bowl and our hush puppies were burned hard rocks. They didn't even have sodas that night! Sweet Old Bills a staple spot that's been on our list to try for quite a while. We had a rare Friday evening off so ventured over there. First, we were greeted with very friendly service from the host stand to our server. We ordered our drinks and entrees after taking probably too long to look at the menu. The restaurant was getting busy. We shared the skillet cornbread and I ordered the smoked meatloaf. Something unique to me and it sounded delicious. It was super tender and I could definitely taste the smoky flavor. It was a generous portion and I ended up taking some home. Our waitress was one of a kind and super helpful! With a dairy allergy she was sure to check all of the ingredients and breads for me to make sure my order was okay with my allergen. This was SO greatly appreciated. My husband and I both ordered a burger. His was the basic plain burger, mine had chili and sale! I greatly enjoyed mine and the sweet potato fries. However, my husband was kind of disappointed that he couldn't order his burger to be cooked medium. Per the waitress they are all cooked well done, which is exactly what we received. I also would have liked it a little less done. Per the menu burgers are made to order, but per the staff this was not the case, which was slightly disappointing. The service was ok although they were a little slower than we would have liked in checking on things. We decided to split a few items to get a try of different foods. Went here on a Sunday after church and enjoyed a good meal with friends. Definitely can see why it's a local favorite. My pulled pork plate was great and loved the tomato pie and Mac and cheese! It was all delicious & served nice and steamy. My pulled pork was a little more fatty than I prefer and pulled lots of big pieces of fat out. I tried my kids chicken tenders and they were flavorful and tender. We also all enjoyed some mimosas with brunch and it was perfectly mixed with OJ and champagne. Only negative is really the price on some of their items but they follow suit with other BBQ joints. And the service tends to be hit or miss. Now, the biggest pull with this place and, I kid you not, their nachos is the best. I'd put it up against anything in the state! The most important thing is they don't stack it up (which is the dumbest thing), they lay it out wide and low so more toppings and cheese hit the chips. I had asked about one of the wine selections, but she couldn't answer the question as she told me she was only 18. Before ordering the wine, I had ordered a lemon drop martini. While the martini was half full, I decided I also wanted to take advantage of the 1/2 price wine deal. My server put the order in, then kindly told me she couldn't bring the wine unless the martini was returned or finished. Enjoyed a delicious brunch here on Sunday. They've got a seemingly tasty menu, though I can only speak on the brisket hash. When we arrived we were greeted by the hostess and seated quickly. The menu had several great sounding options, but the brisket hash called to me. I opted for my eggs scrambled rather than sunny side up. The order came out quickly in a heaping portion. So I've been meaning to try this place, finally made it last weekend and was a little underwhelmed. The food was okay, I got the wild bird* sandwich? It was in a lot of the reviews with the white bbq sauce. I'm not sure what I expected but red onion and dill pickle on a pulled bbq chicken sandwich was not it? I love Brussels, and when I saw the comment about "tempura is the only way I want them now" I figured I had to try. Now I will say there is A LOT in this appetizer, but not cutting the base off kinda made it dry and chewy? Idk. Not for me. But the sauce made them better! Our server also did not help matters, in general you need a personality of some sort to be a server and poor guy is a wet blanket. Asked for opinions of any sort on the menu, and I don't think he could've given a more generic/bland answer on all accounts. My bf got the Carolina burger and that was good. The bar&patio seemed to be hopping tho and we both agreed we'd come back for a date night sometime, maybe try the ribs since they're "best in the triad the last three years". We made an impromptu visit to Sweet Old Bills on Monday Sep 9 for appetizers and drinks. Surprisingly it was a little busy for a Monday. It was our first time visiting and after reviewing the menu in advance it was great for what we were looking to eat. It was a little tricky finding the host stand because they have two entrances, the one facing Main Street and a side entrance from the parking lot. But it was obvious we were a bit turned around but it all worked out, btw..the host stand is near the parking lot entrance on the side. We ordered appetizers for the table which were shareable portions and adult drinks. We ordered the brisket loaded nachos, spicy smoke wings and the trio dip sampler. Everything was tasty and fine for a last minute get together for good food that wasn't too heavy. The place felt dark and it was dimly lit. Have been there about 4 times. First time best Brunswick stew I've ever had. Sadly every time I've been there since they don't have it, they ran out. Was there one time and they were out of pork chicken brisket. Literally all I had to eat was sides or a hamburger. Was there Monday and they were out of Brunswick stew of course and brisket. So I got a burger, which was acceptable nothing outstanding. If it had not been for such a friendly and attentive server, this would've been a flop visit as well, but Jack was really nice. Kind of a rough experience here. First off, I'll start by saying that we went on a Wednesday afternoon at about 2pm, so not many people were working at that moment. The service started off and continued to be really slow throughout our dining experience. We almost walked out unfortunately because it took almost 15 mins for a server to come over to us and ask for drinks and apps. Not a great start. We also had to move booths because the one we were sat at had duct tape all over it, which we then placed at another table that also had duct tape all over it. The two appetizers were off. In the crispy Brussels, there were actual lemon slices in there that were deep fried too, and if you weren't paying attention, you bit into one of those with a sprout and had quite the tart taste in your mouth. The vidalia onion dip had the weirdest consistency, I'm not sure about what the base was, but it just wasn't it. It didn't melt properly. To be fair, we shared a salad with chicken + an order of cheese curds and didn't try any of the foods for which the restaurant is well known. The beer selection was okay, but as far as we could tell there's no beer menu outside of the chalkboard, so determining the rotating taps is difficult on a popular night during which the bartenders are busy and trying to do a quick turnaround on orders. She Said: First, I was happy to be able to order a glass of one of my favorite Pinot Noirs. That put me in a happy space. It's hard for us to resist cheese curds, so we shared some of those along with the Southwest Salad with chicken. The cheese curds were deep fried cheese, so it's hard to complain--though they were left in the fryer a tad too long. I wasn't a huge fan of the marinara that came with them, but the salad dressing made for a good dipping alternative. I struggled between a 3 or 4 star review for Sweet Old Bill's, because the food was solid and the location is great, but the experience as a whole left a bit to be desired. My friend and I had dinner here on a Thursday evening. Let's start with the blah part of dinner here... 1. There was live music...which would have been great if I had come with no intention of talking to my friend. The band was inside and we sat outside and could still barely hear each other. We had to yell most of the evening just to hear each other. Again, the music would have been great if we had come to hear the music, but I guess we chose the wrong night. 2. The service was super slow. However, with that said, the place was pretty packed and I only ever saw 2 staff members come outside (the food delivery guy and the waiter), so I think they may have been understaffed and busy. The pros of dinner.... 1. The service...in spite of it being slow, our waiter was super friendly, patient, and kind. He was working his butt off! 2. The burger I ordered was really good! The sweet potato fries were wonderful! 3. The location is great. Tons of parking in the lot next door and adjacent to the building. Also if you sit outside, you get to watch the traffic (people and cars) go by. We got to watch the sunset over the trees from where we sat. It was lovely. Overall, I had a positive experience. We have been discovering more of HP lately and we love it! Per a recommendation from a friend we stopped into Sweet Old Bills for lunch and I'm so so glad we did! The restaurant is quite large which was nice - it would have to be extremely busy for there to be a wait. We were sat promptly and our server was such a nice college student. She was bubbly, talkative, and helpful which is all we could have asked for. I got a margarita and while it wasn't the best I've ever had, it was still good! We also got the nachos and crispy fried brussel sprouts for an appetizer. The nachos were piled high and I've never had a tempura fried brussel sprout before but now I never wanna go back! Not to mention the sauce on the side was a great accompaniment. My husband got the Cuban sandwich and said it was a little on the dry side - needs a sauce with it. I got the two meat combo plate and it was EVERYTHING. Both the chicken and ribs seasoned and cooked perfectly, my collards made just how I like them, the Mac and cheese creamy, and don't even get me started on the Alabama white sauce. I love a good bbq spot and this one delivered. My friend had recently ate here so when a someone mentioned we should go for dinner I was more than ready. They were packed because of a final 4 game but they were able to seat us right away because the restaurant is rather large. It was busy but service was pretty quick overall. We started with the crispy fried Brussels and the nachos with brisket and they were both incredible. For dinner I got the 1/2 chicken which was moist and delicious. We finally stopped into Sweet old Bills. It's been here I think since the 80s?? It was very busy, filled with locals of all ages, and college students as well. The food was great. We went after church on Sunday for a bite. Food was just ok. On the menu it stated best BBQ in the triad for 3 years. Not sure what 3 years, but it said 3 years. It also said the smoked wings were a local award winner. We had the smoked wings they were ok. Over cooked slightly and I'm pretty sure they were smoked initially and then fried right before bringing them to the table. The smoked chicken was ok and I like the corn pudding. Everyone will say this. My grandmother's tomato pie was way better. It was way to oily for me. I'm used to tomato pie being a lighter summer dish. So I was pretty disappointed in something closer to an eggplant Parmesan. Wife felt the same way. Her burger was ok, but she wasn't overly impressed. Service was a little slow, but I think our server was stretched thin that day. Our server was super friendly, so she did well considering. Some of them were good, nice crunch but about half were very hard, like crack a tooth hard and the cheese that came with it was bland, We wouldn't recommend this appetizer. For the meal I ordered the Goat burger and they let me sub the Mac n cheese for the fries. I had such high hopes but it was just an unseasoned meat patty with barely any flavor from the cheese or the jam. My husband had the Cowboy and that was a little better but not by much. Just finished playing at a nearby kids' play park and boy were we HUNGRY! After doing a search for nearby highly rated places, we landed here. I was worried it would be way too packed to get seating at lunchtime given its full parking lot and bustle, but we were seated relatively quickly. And considering all the food we ordered, it came out relatively quickly too! I ordered ribs and hubby had a sampling of items from chicken, brisket and think ribs as well. The kids LOVED the brisket and the chicken was surprisingly well cooked too. I always find bbq chicken to be dry and lacking blended flavor throughout the bite, but it wasn't the case with this one. It was more validating that the kids actually ate a lot of the plate as well. Sweet potatoes and hush puppy sides were extra items we ordered and it's more or less what you'd expect. My feedback for Sweet Bill's. We are not from the immediate area of Sweet Old Bill's restaurant, but had a sporting event in the area and looked at ratings on yelp and decided on Sweet Bills! When we walked through the door, no one acknowledged us! At least five employees walked past us, and never even acknowledged us, or said someone would be with us in a moment! After a short wait, a man walked up to us with a very exasperated expression on his face! We had our elderly grandmother with us and asked if we could be seated in a quiet booth in the corner and he immediately said no that'll be a 15-20 minute wait because that server doesn't have availability! so he then said that he had another booth across the restaurant in the you louder bar area available! We sat down, and I looked at the menus that were all sticky and dirty! A waitress who was also the bartender, walked up to us with no smile or welcome demeanor! That continued throughout the entire evening! We also felt very rushed by her! We placed an order after asking a few questions that she didn't seem to interested in answering, and our food finally arrived! You can tell a lot about a restaurants food by the quality of their side dishes. Case in point, it is obvious that Sweet Old Bills has no concern about the quality of their food. I ordered hush puppies and collard greens as my side. The hush puppies were over cooked in old oil, were tasteless and cold. The collard greens were too salty to consume. I had their pulled pork and smoked chicken. Both of the meats were cold, dry, overcooked and tasteless. If it wasn't for the barbecue sauce on the table it would not have been edible. When we ordered the chicken, we were under the impression, based on the menu's description, that we would be getting a 1/2 chicken not cut up little bite-size pieces of chicken. When we were ready to ask for the bill, we inquired about their desserts, she said that the banana pudding and peanut butter pie was very good! We ordered them to go! The entire drive home I anticipated my slice of peanut butter pie or what I thought was going to be a slice, of their peanut butter pie. When I lifted the container out of the bag, I couldn't believe how light it was! This was no slice of pie ...this serving was barely a sliver. Maybe 3 or four bites, at best, for $8 price tag...absolutely ridiculous. As we walked to the restroom, we noticed how filthy the restaurant was and then when we went inside the restroom, we were even more disgusted! Don't waste your money or your time.
