Stopped by city BBQ to pick up a pound of pulled pork. It has become a bit of a tradition over the last 5 years to make Brunswick stew on New Years Eve, and City BBQ has become our go to spot to get the pulled pork from. Staff is always friendly, and quick to get orders out. They are open 7 days a week, sell meat by pound and have fair pricing. On top of that, their food, and sides are always delicious. Stopping in on New Year's Eve day, it was a very quiet, so they were quick to help me and quick to get my order out. The cashier was friendly, and when ringing me up, noticed I still had birthday reward on my account, and asked if I wanted to add it. I came in for a pound of pulled pork , and left with the pork and a bonus apple cobbler! As far as BBQ, although it's a chain, City BBQ is probably my favorite BBQ spot in the area. Pretty good grub. The Mac n cheese was great and gooey. I ordered the bama pulled chicken sandwich. Ample amount of chicken, the type of bama sauce threw me off a little. I've had Alabama White Sauce multiple times before. Sandwich was still good though. Only thing, a better check of the pulled meat. I had a 2-3 inch bone in my sandwich when I was chewing my food. I was excited to try the brisket chili! Well, flavor is great! BUT, I had 1 piece of brisket in the whole bowl!!! It was a bowl! NOT a cup! Geez! Also, not many beans either. It was more like a soup that didn't come with crackers or cornbread. My husband purchased a "side" cornbread for $3+ which is crazy expensive in my opinion. I was very disappointed. I guess I have high standards that "chili" is going to be thick and hearty. For the price I would go for a sandwich next time where I know it will have enough protein on it. Having spent a good amount of time in the Lone Star state of Texas, I've been exposed to some amazing BBQ Texas-style. City BBQ kinda reminds me of some BBQ places I'd eat at in Fort Worth or down towards Waco. Good smoke and good meats. I'm not going to downvote them for it being hot inside, hey Texas gets hot, you just deal with it. You come to a place like this for pork burnt ends, for BBQ chicken, for smoked turkey breasts. Today was my first in-store experience! I had previously tried their food via catering when I had another job located right around the corner from this one. I really liked the interior of the store and thought it was quite impressive; they had numerous interesting decorations that made the space unique. Today, I got the Texas-style hot dog, which was more of a smoked sausage with slaw. I liked it; I wasn't particularly hungry today due to the extreme heat, and this was nice and reasonably light. The slaw gave the dog a nice crunch and freshness. The sausage had an excellent smoked and pork flavor, and it was done, as the casing had a nice crunch when I bit into it. I also got the fried okra, which was a bit disappointing, as it wasn't super crispy, even though it looked like it should be. Other than that, everything was fine. I didn't really try the sauce, because I didn't get a menu item that needed sauce. I will be coming back and trying something else next time! read more

Not the greatest City BBQ franchise out there. They do have smokers with wood onsite, some of their locations get their BBQ from centralized kitchens or other restaurants so that means they actually have a real pitmaster on site. The BBQ is just average as far as BBQ goes...I like to think of this place as the fast food of BBQ...kind of like a Panera, just a bit more upscale than other fast food restaurants but not as good as a locally owned unique restaurant. Their chicken nachos were pathetic....it was mostly chips and sauce, very little toppings almost no meat. They did not hit the spot. The strawberry cobbler was huge and a lot of food and decent, but it was more of some type of moist cake versus a real cobbler. I like the fact that the restaurant uses reusable plates and dishes but the cobbler comes in a thick one-time-use plastic container which is a shame. Service was a bit slow for a restaurant that was at maybe 25% capacity. read more

I picked up my ordered to notice individual serving sized banana puddings, not a qt. When I arrived home, it turns out the banana puddings have caramel as an ingredient. No where on the website nor my order did it indicate caramel. My family didn't mind, however, if you are going to substitute an item, it should have been brought to my attention at time of pickup (write on receipt or bag as a reminder). The hostess did not even acknowledge us. I had to ask, 'Do you order here?' and then she put her phone down. The floor was sticky. The tables were sticky. There were no knives on the boom and only two f forks. The place was basically empty on a Saturday at lunchtime. The hush puppies were super dry but tasty. We came at 4pm. After the lunch rush. Weird that their plate container is totally full and they have no trays clean. However. This may explain the dry food. I loved everything about City Barbeque. And before you ask, yes I did get a salad - but it was the best salad I've had at a restaurant in a long while due to the smoked chicken on top. Blew me away! And for less than $10... are you kidding me?! I'll be getting this all the time on workdays. Service was very friendly and quick. There's a nice patio outside we enjoyed, and plenty of indoor seating. There's even a drive thru! Someday soon I will have to go try the barbeque because it looked incredible. All of this is to say that this place makes no pretense of trying to dethrone a local favorite, which is just as well as the meat quality here cannot touch the likes of Black Powder or Biscuits, Brisket, and Brews. What it lacks in bona fides, it makes up for in convenience though there is still room for improvement. Enter City Barbeque, and you'll be greeted by a hunger-inspiring smell and a large digital menu. There are salads and sandwiches though the meats are likely to be the main draw. You can do them ala carte, by the pound, or in a sampler platter. Should you save room for dessert, chocolate cake, cobbler, and banana pudding are available as well. For our first visit, my wife and I split a City Sampler (4 meats/2 sides/1 bread) and a Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich. We opted for brisket, pulled pork, smoked turkey, smoked sausage, fried okra, hush puppies, and Texas toast. We didn't have long to wait for our food, and we found an impressive array of sauces (sweet, heat, vinegar, mustard, and more) to pair with it. The food proved to be a decidedly mixed bag. The brisket was legitimately good, probably the best I've had at a chain. The Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich was tasty as well, offering mayo and creamy slaw to offset a less saucy chicken breast. Its heat + sweet pickle combination remains a winner. The turkey and hushpuppies held their own. On the other hand, the sausage, while flavorful, was very salty, the okra was forgettable, the pork was dry, and the "Texas toast" was only a hot dog bun. City Barbeque probably won't be your first choice when a barbecue craving hits, but the ease of ordering, quick turn-around, and number of menu options mean that it shouldn't be ruled out, either. I've eaten several times at City Barbeque and have always been well pleased. The employees are courteous, knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. Today, though, they outdid themselves. I hosted a small party with 10 guests and ordered the 8 - 10 person dinner from them yesterday. They advised on the available choices and options, suggested portion sizes, and scheduled delivery, accommodating our delivery time. Everything arrived on time, well packaged, and included all necessary condiments. The delivery man was cheerful. Charge was reasonable with no surprises. Decided to try this place for New Year's game day lunch. I am glad I did. Since I had never visited, I needed help ordering. The counter service was knowledgeable and very helpful. The clerk even pointed out that I didn't need extra sides because my order had enough. I can't tell you how much that simple point made me trust this restaurant. I'm always fond of a BBQ smokehouse that offers more than traditional NC pork. I'm a huge fan of Brisket, but most BBQ places I've been to in NC loves to smother it in sauce. I prefer dry rub for all of my smoked meats. So being that City BBQ offers dry rub and sauces on the side is a huge plus. Everything was pretty good, collards a bit salty.
