If biscuits were crack this spot would rival Nino Brown's operation in New Jack City.
With a touch of butter and sweet maple syrup, it makes you wonder why anyone would want to undermine these biscuits with gravy and sausage. Like steak, ice cream, or threesomes, not everything is better with sausage and gravy. [Though I suppose if the biscuits were into it I'd try anything once.]
I'd liken the home fries to the painkillers you find from your wisdom tooth removal two years ago. Really good, but not quite good enough to have your teeth pulled again just to get more. Almost though.
As for the rest of the fair, I thought they executed as described and overall did pretty well. Eggs with peppers were provided as described. I didn't like some of the ingredient variations as much as I thought I would like the parmesan cheese on the italian scramble, but other ingredient combos worked really well together like the 18th street scramble.
The main criticisms of this place concern service, atmosphere, waiting in line, and the prices. I have one minor critique, but address those raised by others first.
Service: The place is often busy and the layout does not make it easy for staff to maneuver, especially when the entrance is clogged with waiting patrons. I would have liked to have my coffee refreshed a bit more, but overall they were quick to take orders and serve quickly when ready. The staff was friendly and even provided me a sign-up to get a free birthday meal. Free birthday meal? That's some serious customer service in my book.
Atmosphere: The place is not big and they have good food so it is often crowded. But unlike someone you have to date for 3 months to uncover why they are still single in their 30's - it's not like you can't tell right away how the atmosphere here is from the moment you walk in...
Wait: Lines suck but are fairly predictable. And most things of value are worth waiting for. [Baby take me back please!! I'm right here waiting for you outside your house just like yesterday - Let's not throw away what we built over the last 3 months!]
Prices: Wanna cheap breakfast? - Go buy a dozen eggs and a pound of bacon and a loaf of bread. Combine ingredients to taste. Cook. Top with cheese. It's that simple. SMC is a unique spot in a competitive industry that operates in an increasingly high rent area. Their meals are priced similarly to most brunch places in hip hoods.
My only gripe concerns table justice. Some tables have much better room than others, so you may wait 30 minutes and get a less desirable table while someone who comes in 25 minutes after you and only waits 10ends up with a better table because it became available after you were seated. [Injustice!] The less desirable tables also allow fellow diners to hear your conversation. However, if your own table conversation is so boring you find yourself listening to others' conversations in close proximity, or notice others listening to you, then you may simply need more interesting conversation topics/partners.
[Likewise, if your dining party is so boring that you are staring at the walls and judging the decor, you may just need a more interesting dining party.] read more
