This used to be one of the best chicken spots in Chicago, but now it's barely comparable to your average wing stop. They ditched the delicious recipe, they ditched the actually pieces of chicken, with the slice of toast, and instead give you some basic wings with sauces that do absolutely nothing for your taste buds. The Nashville hot dry rub is terrible, zero flavor. The biscuit has no actual flavor. The service is worse than a McDonald's. You'll hear an ongoing beeping alarm as you try to dine in, that they say is from a bad drink machine? And not sure how they wash their hands with no soap in the washroom. I got a delivery order from this restaurant on a Tuesday night. I got the spicy chicken tenders, they were spicy but not as spicy as they are labeled. It's a smoky heat, and they are in a dry rub. The chicken is well cooked, although there were a few tendons I had to eat around. I also got the fries and a chicken Caesar salad wrap. The wrap was dry, lacked Caesar dressing, but had all the right components. You can add a side of sauce and you should. It may be better if not delivered. I also got the kids chicken tender meal, it comes with three small chicken tenders, fries, and a biscuit. They looked crispy, and good. I would probably eat there if I were to revisit. read more

This is a nice little fast food-ish chicken restaurant. You can get chicken wings, chicken tenders, or a chicken sandwich on a biscuit or bun. Of course, I had to get my sandwich on a biscuit, which are huge by the way. They have a few signature chicken sandwiches to choose from. The Carolina Style was calling my name so that is what I went with. I also got a side of fries. It took them about 15 minutes to have my food ready. My sandwich was so delicious. It was packed with flavor. It was also fresh and hot. There is metered street parking and commercial parking lots available for those that are driving to get here. Ordered Roost Chicken & Biscuits for my lazy Sunday meal, and it did not disappoint! I'd heard great things about this spot in River West, so I had to check it out. I went with the 3-piece tender chicken sandwich and a side of mac & cheese. The chicken sandwich was amazing! I got to customize it and chose a brioche bun, spicy seasoning, ranch sauce, and added pimento cheese--and wow, it hit the spot. I love pimento cheese, and it took the sandwich to the next level. Plus, it was a pretty big sandwich, so even if you're really hungry, just a sandwich and a side is a solid meal. Not knowing that, I also ordered extra chicken and got the 3-piece tenders. They were hefty and cooked perfectly! I had them with Alabama white sauce, which I highly recommend if you've never tried it before--so good. The mac & cheese was super cheesy and delicious too. I love fried chicken and I love biscuits. Service was a bit slow due to the amount of takeout orders perhaps. But, this is a decent spot for both items. The chicken spicy level 3 of 5: Good texture, but no flavor in the breading or sauce. The biscuit 4 of 5: nice, buttery salty biscuit, but it could of been a bit bigger to fit the chicken better. This was one of my first stops once getting to Chicago. We arrived and it was empty which was concerning but I wasn't going to let that stop me. The cashier struggled answering my questions and seemed to be guessing more than giving an accurate answer. I ended up walking away because ever answer was beating around the bush kind of response so I let the person I was with complete the transaction. The space was decent. They had a fair amount of seating not huge but not tiny. Simple dining room but serves its purpose. For food we got the house style on a plain biscuit and the sunrise on a jalapeño cheddar biscuit. The house style def would have been better fit for a brioche bun over the biscuit. But that wasn't a recommendation the cashier could assist with. The sunrise breakfast sandwich did great on the biscuit. But over all I have 2 big issues. 1) the biscuits even though it looked like they came out a hot box sat on the counter and became cold. 2) the same for the sandwiches themselves. They moved so slow and no urgency that the food was like warm. I ordered hot sandwiches I expected hot sandwiches. The flavor was good but the template was lacking. I've had hotter sandwiches from delivery orders and considering I ate at the restaurant I'm not sure how they managed it. It's my favorite food in the city, bar none! Moving away from being right across the street has been a real struggle. The staff are always nice and orders are ready quickly in person or online, despite being cooked to order. That means great things for freshness and quality since your food hasn't been sitting. They're available with typical food ordering apps, but ordering directly from them gets you rewards pretty often for $ spent or birthdays etc. Chicken and waffles are my favorite combo. If you go the sandwich or strips route, get 1 of every side, they're all excellent. Recommend for hangovers or as general comfort food. I wish they were open later on Sunday nights, but if you prepare order of time you can grab your food right under the 7pm deadline. We ordered the House Style Sandwich with both bread options: Buttermilk Biscuit and Sweet Brioche. We did prefer the Brioche as it paired better. The biscuit wasn't bad but a little dry and broke apart a bit while holding it up. The Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding was just a bit too sweet and over baked, so I wished we tried the peach cobbler instead. Tried this for the first time yesterday. Greeted upon walking in, which was nice. Since I've never been here, I was asking for some advice and suggestions and I was given the "well, It just depends on what you're in the mood for." I don't like that answer because number one of course it depends on what I'm in the mood for and number two I've never been here so I'm not entirely sure what I'm in the mood for which is why I'm asking for some suggestions or advice. Anyway, after some back-and-forth, I settled on a biscuit sandwich with pickles and hot honey, and a side of mac & cheese. The chicken was incredibly bland, as was the biscuit. As a chicken sandwich, I would give it zero stars. The main reason for this is that the pickles were the most overpowering taste. I love pickles, but for a sandwich like this to work all the flavors need to come together to create something where the whole is more powerful than the parts. About halfway through the sandwich, I realized this was not going to be the case so I ate the chicken separately - zero flavor - then I ate the biscuit dipped in the overflowing hot honey sauce - not bad, but not in the top 10 biscuits I've ever had or anything like that - and then I finished off the pickles which were delicious. All in all the chicken sandwich, at least in the way I ordered it, was not good. I finished it because I was really hungry, but I had no taste of anything after having finished it and I didn't feel like I've eaten anything. Totally unsatisfying. As for the mac & cheese, certainly better than the chicken sandwich, but not really anything to write home about. If the sandwich was zero stars then I'd say the mac & cheese was maybe two. This location is horrible in terms of parking and traffic; the cashier was nice; the food was lousy and bland. Not worth the 30 minute drive each way. This leaves my two current favorite chicken sandwiches the same: hot chi chicken, and small Cheval, with Budlong coming in third. I have wanted to try Roost for a while now. Tucked away on the edge of River West and West Town, I would see the business as I drove to my son's house. This cute, uniquely shaped restaurant looks colorful and inviting. Al fresco dining is available on the quiet side of the building. Parking is easy so there is no reason not to stop in. When I walked in, the guy up front was so friendly. He greeted me warmly, chatted with me while I waited and said goodbye using my name as I left. The chicken, fries, mac & cheese and biscuits were a hit. The pickles looked amazing so I asked for extra. Sadly, there were zero pickles in the bag. I made sure to ask the girl bagging the food if all items were in the bag, since there were several different things. She assured me my order was complete. She was distracted and chatting with colleagues, which is kind of what prompted me to go over the order. When we were unpacking our bag and I discovered our missing pickles I called the restaurant. Although they were open, there was no answer to my call. It definitely did not ruin our meal, but man those pickles looked good!! I have now decided their biscuits are the best in town! I see 6 staff and I am wondering how is it that this is taking so long! They are so slow. I watched the person making a sandwish take two minutes to spead a sauce in the bread. They don't feel any pressure to be efficient or prioritize an order over their curiosity about what the other staff is doing. I also saw a person come and ask for their order, the person making sandwiches stop to say "that is not ready" to the costumer then to find out later that her orders was already there waiting for minutes. I've been on the hunt for some good chicken sandwiches, and this place on halsted grand & milwaukee is the first place I tried out. They seem to offer a good selection of chicken sandwiches with a basic heat level, all the way up to holy cow hot. I got the sunrise chicken sandwich, comes with an egg. Biscuit is spot on. I was craving some crispy fried chicken and once I finally decided where to go, I chose Roost based on proximity. I'm super happy I went with roost! I ordered online and estimated pickup time was 20-30 min. This location is pretty small with seating for maybe 4 people total. I ordered the 1/4 white fried chicken with original seasoning, a side of Mac and cheese and a can of coke. My food was ready when I went to pick it up and they keep it in a warm spot. Used to be fry the coop but the Mac and cheese here is better so I'm a convert. You can choose how spicy your chicken and sauces is which is great for multiple people. The heater- chicken sandwich with blue cheese and coleslaw on a brioche bun. Tried it Nashville hot which is 3/4 heat level. At times the bites made me cough or eyes water but the blue cheese and coleslaw balanced it really well and Sometimes you want that mouth inferno feel. I certainly would not go to the next heat which is XXX (4/4). Also had the tenders spicy (2/4) which was nice. Had with the chipotle ranch which was excellent and kicked it up. Side of Mac and cheese was killer. It was less of a soup and more of a solid which is how I prefer Mac and cheese. It's a little peppery but not spicy. Definitely a hidden gem in the neighborhood. Really good sandwiches n fries. My son and I stopped by the Milwaukee Ave location after one of his bball games. We tried the Carolina Style & Panama City sammies. Both of 'em were very tasty. Went to Roost on a pre-study day whim this past weekend and definitely do not regret this decision. I had the Carolina style chicken biscuit, while my boyfriend got the Sunrise chicken biscuit. For sides, we got french fries and peach cobbler. First--everything here seems entirely homemade. The atmosphere of the restaurant screams Southern home cooking. The Carolina style chicken biscuit was perfectly cooked, though the biscuit did lack some structural integrity and could've been a bit bigger/thicker in my opinion. The chicken was crisp, had a perfect amount of breading, and didn't seem greasy (although the chicken was covered in a sweet/spicy glaze). Most importantly, as a self-proclaimed pimento cheese connoisseur, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and authenticity of pimento cheese considering that we are ~800 miles from South Carolina. The fries and peach cobbler were also above average. However, I personally was not a huge fan of the peach cobbler, and found it a bit too sweet and mushy for my liking. Hands down the best Southern food I've had since my move to Chicago, and truly a taste of home. Look forward to returning and trying some of their other fried chicken meals! read more
