Beef short ribs and collard greens
    Kendra R.

Another awesome visit. This time, my friends and I decided to order several entrées and extra sides so we could have a little tasting experience and try a variety of dishes. One person in our group has dairy restrictions, and the restaurant did a great job accommodating her. All of the dishes that included dairy was served deconstructed so she could enjoy the components that worked for her dietary needs without compromising the rest of the dishes. For our mains, we ordered the beef short ribs with creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, and gravy, along with the half chicken with baby squash and green beans. For our additional sides, we had the cornbread with honey butter, collard greens with smoked turkey, and creamy mac and cheese. Everything was good, and everyone enjoyed their meals. You can really taste that home-cooking influence in the food. The flavors are comforting and familiar, but you're still getting that elevated restaurant experience. The half chicken was the standout dish of the night. It was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Everyone at the table agreed that it was our favorite. Our least favorite was the short rib. It was tender and cooked well, but we all felt like it was missing something. We couldn't quite put our finger on what it needed. After looking at photos from other diners, I noticed the gravy was incorporated in the rib. That may have been the missing element that brought the short rib together and given it that extra layer of flavor we were looking for. Overall, another good experience. I look forward to returning to try a few more things from the menu.

It was Highly recommended for me to have dinner here while in Chicago and they did not disappoint. No reservation but I always get lucky rolling solo and got a seat at the bar. Dimly lit vibey setting. My server/ bartender was very kind and gave me good recommendations. They fried green tomatoes are a must get! So so good. The short rib were good but even better when I heated it up the next day! Maybe because I was full off the fried green tomatoes. But the next day it was so tender and melt in your mouth. Both cocktails I had were delicious and well balanced.

The vibe was pretty relaxed and felt like you're in a family member's home. Service was fine with good pacing and consistent water refills, but nothing memorable. 6/10. The Biscuits (6/10) were soft but pretty bland on their own. Spreading the pimento cheese on made it much more flavorful. The Gizzards (7/10) had a perfectly crispy exterior and chewy texture. The chewy rice and sauce underneath added more flavor and texture which I liked. The Short Ribs (9/10) were the best dish. The meat fell apart with a rich, savory sauce. The creamy spinach and mashed potatoes made each bite richer, while the crispy onions added a nice crunch. The onions were a little oily but still worked well. The Fish & Grits (7/10) had tender fish with buttery, nicely textured grits. The crab étouffée added a savory sauce that gave the dish much more depth. The Mac & Cheese (6.5/10) had a nice browned crust and creamy cheese underneath, but the pasta was softer than I like and needed more salt and pepper. The Cornbread (6/10) was very buttery and soft with little crust, but the sweet honey butter was the highlight. The Blueberry Cobbler (5/10) had a pastry topping and a warm, very sweet blueberry filling. Overall, as someone who grew up in the South, I wasn't particularly impressed. Everything was decent and alright for what it was, but nothing I'd really rave about except for the short ribs.

THE HYPE IS REAL YALL!! The food was genuinely one of the best southern food I've ever had (coming from someone from the literal south). I had a 8:30pm reservation but they keep seating up until 9 when they closed; with a 15 min buffer. Everything had to be order all at once, including drinks and food. The dark interior is honestly very aesthetic and adds a moody vibe. I had the fish and grits, which was a HUGE portion, and the cornbread was insanely good as well. I was between that and the biscuits. I recommend the uncle honey as a drink because the flavors mix together so well! Also get the Millie's pudding (banana pudding) for dessert! Prices are also so reasonable for the portion size as well. Highly recommend going if you can get a reservation; which are sometimes hard to do. Will be back!

Enjoyed visiting Virtue. A friend told us they had a great meal when they went so it's been on my list since then. I was able to find street parking about a block away which was great!! I like the look of the restaurant starting off with drinks I really liked the bizzy Izzy it had bourbon, sherry, pineapple and lemon. The other drink was beautiful and had nice flavor too but I think maybe all the egg white foam was a bit much for me after a few sips. I love the combination of flavors in it rum pomegranate and lime. For a starter we had the honey butter cornbread it was delicious light and buttery with a perfect amount of sweetness. The green tomatoes with shrimp was delicious as well I only wish it was bigger it had a nice cornmeal coating on the tomatoes and a tasty light herby sauce on the shrimp great pairing!! The Mac and cheese had a nice thick crust and the inside was a super gooey saucy Mac and cheese. I enjoyed it my mom thought the crust was a bit too thick. I also really liked the blackened catfish it had a very light delicate soft texture. The seasoning was light as well but it works because it tastes so clean and it forms with an its own sauce and rice that reminded me of a risotto and barbecued carrots. I kinda wish I would have gotten the collard greens I heard they were good but was already getting full. I'd definitely go back and enjoyed the meal!! It was nice to share dishes to try more of the menu

My bestie from Los Angeles is here!!! She wanted to go here for dinner and why not? I love Hyde Park! The restaurant is so beautiful and I felt like a hug when I came in! Warm, inviting and you feel at home! Very much soul and love here! We had amazing service, our waiters were attentive and gave great recommendations! The food was incredible! Can't wait to return!

My boyfriend and I made this reservation before traveling into Chicago and it was the best decision we could have made! We were lucky enough to be staying at a hotel on the same block making it in incredibly convenient getting there. Our server and overall service was attentive, welcoming and friendly. The food was incredibly memorable and extremely well prepared! There were so many great things to choose from. The gumbo was an absolute perfect choice to order and the short ribs were perhaps the MOST tender I've ever had in a restaurant! All in all, we LOVED our visit, would recommend and would return when visiting again!

Definitely a special restaurant. Super busy even on a week night. We had made a reservation a few weeks in advance but it still took about 20 minutes to get seated. Loved the plating of the foods. What we ordered: Blackened catfish: Carolina gold rice, barbecue carrots Mac & Cheese: as it should be Short rib: served with creamed spinach, potatoes, and caramelized onion gravy Biscuits: served with pimento cheese & honey (probably my favorite thing we had) Millie's puddin': Banana pudding, Nilla wafers, cool whip

I ascended. I was born and raised in South Carolina so I had high hopes and Virtue did NOT disappoint. We started with the biscuits and pimento cheese which I highly recommend. The biscuits were drop biscuits which is my preferred style (over flaky layers) but the pimento was a creamier texture than I usually like (I like a shred of cheese here and there). We also split the gumbo which skewed more red beans and rice, however, that's NOT a complaint I was in heaven especially with the large chunks of meat throughout. We split the short rib entree and didn't even need a knife to divvy out portions it was so incredibly tender. The mac and cheese side was godly and the collards were very flavorful--the turkey that came with it was also super tender. We ended the meal with very traditional banana pudding which I don't usually like but I was borderline cleaning the bowl. Please go here you can't order a bad thing, seriously.

Every time I come here it's always the same, amazing food and amazing service. For it to be late, they were packed! I had a 930 reservation, and they closed at 10. Service was great as usual. They were very attentive. The ambiance is beautiful and inviting. I ordered the short rib which was amazing as always! I also got the cornbread and Mac n cheese. Loved both as usual lol. My friend ordered the ny strip, and it was delicious too! That was my first time trying it, and it was seasoned so well! I was very impressed by it because I don't hear people talk about the steak often when they go there. For dessert, I got the carrot cake which was good as well. Overall I enjoyed my experience, and I'll continue returning.

5 stars, easily! Virtue is upscale establishment offering attentive service, high quality food, and bold flavors. My friends and I visited on a Friday night and it was buzzing and lively! I highly recommend a reservation because it is THAT good so it will be packed! We were seated at the time of our reservation and greeted by the pleasant wait staff. Our server was able to offer us various highlights and recommendations! The food was ABSOLUTELY amazing! Bold in flavor, shareable portions, and filling! Checked every box, hit every spot! Everything we ate was amazing from the Biscuits, to the Short Rib, Chicken, Fish n Grits all the way to the Vanilla ice cream! No notes. I HIGHLY recommend and will certainly be back!

Overall, I had a really great experience at Virtue! Our waiter was lovely and the ambiance is great. Although some of the tables are slightly too close together for my liking, but no one sat next to us for most of our meal so that was nice. My other complaint is that our appetizers came out before our drinks which I didn't love. However, the appetizers were so good I was distracted from the fact that I didn't have a drink until the drink actually showed up! For an appetizer, we had the gumbo and the biscuits with pimento cheese. Both of these options were delicious. The biscuits were buttery and the gumbo was flavorful and was served piping hot. Next, we had the short rib with the mac and cheese and the collared greens. The short rib was very good but was perhaps a tad dry. But when eaten together with the potatoes and spinach, it was perfect. The mac and cheese was slightly too salty for my taste which was a disappointment because I typically love every mac and cheese I come across. I don't think i'd get it again. The collared greens were tasty but I wish there was more turkey. The turkey was delicious.

I can see why Virtue is a highly rated spot in Chicago. The food and service were extremely good. I didn't try a specialty cocktail but I did my go to of a side car and it was made just right. If you're thinking about going to Virtue think no further. I would try happy hour so you can try more things and get a better bang for your buck! The ambiance is also very nice. Almost like you're in a family members home.

How do I make a reservation for January 20 for 6 people at 6 pm?

The reservation fee is applied to the final bill.

How far in advance do reservations open up?

Hi Erika, We take reservations 30 days in advance.

    Do you need reservations?

My meal came out first, and I had to wait quite a while for my sister's chicken biscuit. When it finally arrived, the chicken was not cooked all the way through. My pancake and bacon were both good. I like to be left alone for the most part, and they did just that. My waiter would pop in and out at the perfect moment. I would give the ambiance a 9/10. I loved the hints gold and the dark teal(?) wallpaper

I had the pineapple sweet potatoes & Mac & cheese for sides & yummmmm. The cornbread was also very good! It's not really a dine in restaurant although you can sit inside & eat. It was chill. The service was cool, they were working hard but still friendly. It's a little pricey but the amount of food makes up for it. I had enough to eat the next day & share lol.

The fish is fried well and the hot honey sauce was a good addition, but not amazing. Just regular hot sauce is good for the fish. The green beans are seasoned well and not spicy in my opinion. The mac and cheese was decent. Not award winning, but good. The pineapple sweet potatoes were fantastic! We ordered an extra side, but they forgot to include it. The initial delivery took so long that we didn't bother to ask for them to send it. The corn muffin was also really good! If you're visiting Chicago, I wouldn't say that this is a must-visit place. Check it out, if you have time!

I came here with some of my trainees after a field trip to the Science and Industry museum. There were 12 adults and we spent about $300, which wasn't bad considering your meal comes with two sides and cornbread. I ordered the baked turkey wings with collard greens and white rice. It was so delicious! I couldn't eat it all because the portions were huge! A lot of my trainees needed to-go bags because it was so much food in those containers. The peach cobbler is amazing too! Not too peachy and not too much breading--a perfect combination. The chef was grateful for us coming in and talked to us too! The host was a sweet man and hooked some of my trainees with some sweet tea on the house. Just beautiful people bringing delicious food to Bronzeville.

2.5 stars. Lissen…read more.. it's overpriced. Food was decent enough, but at $30+, I was expecting more. So much more. Menu is written on a whiteboard which allows them to just erase the item when it sells out. But, a digital display would elevate the ambiance and lend a more polished feel. Details matter, especially when you're asking customers to pay premium prices. Customer service was really rocky to start, but the gentleman with the locs saw my face, heard my comment, and quickly adjusted. Much appreciated. Keep that same energy for ALL your customers. What we ate: Delicious: peach cobbler (fantastic!) Decent: short ribs, Mac n cheese, green beans, cornbread muffin Don't bother: collards, salmon One major gripe: at this price point, being served in takeout containers with plastic cutlery cheapens the experience. Invest in real plates and silverware -- your margins can surely support the upgrade. If you are going to automatically grat a dine-in check, then your patrons should sit at clean tables and be greeted by a smiling face. Neither of these were part of my experience. But I also didn't see the gratuity on my check. So, there's that. Clean tables and a warm greeting are basic expectations -- not bonuses -- especially if an automatic gratuity is being added to dine-in checks. (Although curiously, I didn't see this reflected on mine.) As for the $1 price tag on a small 16 oz bottle of water -- yes, you're making a solid markup. But why not reinvest a few cents more in a larger, sport-cap option? Small touches like that make a big difference in perceived value. The space was nearly empty during my visit, but I can imagine it picks up post-Sunday service. Still, the lack of energy in the room matched the food: fine, but not worth rushing back for. Nothing Would I return? Maybe. But I'm not in a hurry.
