I have seen so many great reviews about Virtue, so I had to come check it out myself! I arrived without a reservation and it was an hour wait for the bar. I came back and was immediately greeted and given an intro about the menu, which was very helpful. I went with the fried green tomatoes and short rib. The tomatoes weren't my favorite but the shrimp and remoulade was good. The short rib was the star of the show! The meat was tender and seasoned. The potatoes, gravy, and spinach were a perfect complement! The bartenders were very kind and helpful even though it was busy!
Overall, I had a really great experience at Virtue! Our waiter was lovely and the ambiance is great. Although some of the tables are slightly too close together for my liking, but no one sat next to us for most of our meal so that was nice. My other complaint is that our appetizers came out before our drinks which I didn't love. However, the appetizers were so good I was distracted from the fact that I didn't have a drink until the drink actually showed up! For an appetizer, we had the gumbo and the biscuits with pimento cheese. Both of these options were delicious. The biscuits were buttery and the gumbo was flavorful and was served piping hot. Next, we had the short rib with the mac and cheese and the collared greens. The short rib was very good but was perhaps a tad dry. But when eaten together with the potatoes and spinach, it was perfect. The mac and cheese was slightly too salty for my taste which was a disappointment because I typically love every mac and cheese I come across. I don't think i'd get it again. The collared greens were tasty but I wish there was more turkey. The turkey was delicious.
I can see why Virtue is a highly rated spot in Chicago. The food and service were extremely good. I didn't try a specialty cocktail but I did my go to of a side car and it was made just right. If you're thinking about going to Virtue think no further. I would try happy hour so you can try more things and get a better bang for your buck! The ambiance is also very nice. Almost like you're in a family members home.
This place is outstanding! First time here but won't be my last. This black owned gem is in the heart of Hyde park and it is absolutely top die for. The food was amazing we had Mac and cheese, greens, cornbread and fish. The service was impeccable and the staff was amazing.. the ambiance is lovely, great for couples and groups. I will be back. We meet Lou the manager on the way out and he was so gracious...truly a wonderful experience
Holy guacamole. If you haven't been to virtue, you definitely are missing out! Top notch service. Excellent food. Ive come here twice now and each time has been great. The drinks are yummy. It is definitely a social atmosphere so dont expect intimate and quiet. I'm a tequila drinker but that Uncle Honey was IT!!
Yelp Top 100 nailed this one!! What a delicious meal! We were sat at the bar since the place was justifiably packed. Our bartender/server was great throughout the night. We enjoyed both of our drinks: Apple Jack and Southern Flower. Neither was too sweet and both were good enough to get again. It was hard to decide what to eat, but we settled on the Blackened Catfish and Short Rib with a side of Mac & Cheese. I honestly can't pick which main dish was the better of the two because both were just perfect and satisfying. The mac & cheese was also really good, but we wished they had a smaller side dish because it was a lot on top of everything else. It had such a nice crust to it though! This place did not disappoint at all! This is a must stop if you are in the area and I highly recommend everything I tried. You'll be happy you did!
I went on Easter Sunday with friends. From coming in to leaving, every staff member was amazing, welcoming and a special shoutout to our server Lenny. Lenny was so knowledgeable about the menu and was able to answer any questions I had as a first time guest. The flavors reminded me of a home cooked meal in my great grandmother's kitchen in northern Louisiana, or my great aunt in South Carolina. I come from a family with deep southern roots, so I appreciated the flavors rooted in Black Americana culture. It was like I was experiencing food and history. There's so many wonderful things I could say about Virtue. I am looking forward to coming back the next time I'm in town. Thank you for bringing this gem to Hyde Park.
I absolutely will be back to Virtue. The short ribs were so tender you can cut it with a fork. Literally, everything I had drinks included (Uncle Honey & Peach Tree Fizz) was good. My Mom was going nuts about how good the fried green tomatoes are. The greens tasted like my Granny made them in the back. Yes, it might be pricey..but treat yourself cause it's sooo worth it!!
Get your reservation early! I've been wanting to try this place for a while and glad a landed a reservation. The food was absolutely delicious. Started off with the gumbo which had an incredibly rich roux. It was a little too spicy for my liking but SO good! Ordered a steak, short rib, both very tender. We got greens, Mac, and cornbread which were all very delicious. Loved the crunchiness of the outside of the cornbread, but the inner cake-like texture, very moist and buttery. Got the banana pudding which was more pudding than banana, but was alright. Service was fantastic from the hostess to the servers. I would definitely come back!

The mac & cheese lacked the soulful Southern depth I was hoping for -- overly cheesy with very little texture from the noodles. The collard greens with smoked turkey were unfortunately too acidic and fell flat in flavor. Still, Virtue's warm atmosphere, polished service, and standout mains make it a restaurant worth experiencing in Chicago's dining scene.

I've seen every season of Top Chef and this Carrot Cake won Chef Demarr Brown a challenge. It was pretty spectacular. My only complaint was give me a bigger portion and some more of that carrot caramel sauce. Also had the gumbo which was also delicious. I look forward to returning for a full meal and another piece of that cake.
Our server Joe was great and the hostess was welcoming, great service! The short rib was outstanding. The meat was fork tender, spinach was creamy and I loved the sauce at the bottom of the plate. We also had the cornbread, which could have been larger but it was pretty deep so it's not as small as it looks. The interior is colorful and classy. I highly recommend.

The short rib was everything you hope for--fork-tender, incredibly flavorful, and served atop a bed of creamy spinach and garlic mashed potatoes, all finished with a rich, savory gravy. The service was impeccable. I don't think I've ever had my water poured with such elegance--it felt like I was being served a fine glass of champagne. The Uncle Honey was delectable. A well balanced elixir that Leone floaty and aligned with the flow of the evening. From the hostess to the server, every member of the staff was a true professional, delivering top-tier hospitality from beginning to end. The key lime pie was the perfect ending to an outstanding meal. And the music? Absolutely flawless. The playlist flowed seamlessly from one great song to the next, creating an atmosphere that had me wanting to sing along and celebrate the entire time. Every time I come here it's always the same, amazing food and amazing service. For it to be late, they were packed! I had a 930 reservation, and they closed at 10. Service was great as usual. They were very attentive. The ambiance is beautiful and inviting. I ordered the short rib which was amazing as always! I also got the cornbread and Mac n cheese. Loved both as usual lol. My friend ordered the ny strip, and it was delicious too! That was my first time trying it, and it was seasoned so well! I was very impressed by it because I don't hear people talk about the steak often when they go there. For dessert, I got the carrot cake which was good as well. 5 stars, easily! Virtue is upscale establishment offering attentive service, high quality food, and bold flavors. My friends and I visited on a Friday night and it was buzzing and lively! I highly recommend a reservation because it is THAT good so it will be packed! We were seated at the time of our reservation and greeted by the pleasant wait staff. Our server was able to offer us various highlights and recommendations! The food was ABSOLUTELY amazing! Bold in flavor, shareable portions, and filling! Checked every box, hit every spot! Everything we ate was amazing from the Biscuits, to the Short Rib, Chicken, Fish n Grits all the way to the Vanilla ice cream! No notes. I HIGHLY recommend and will certainly be back! read more

Wow. What an experience. From the ambience + decor to the service to the food + drink, I enjoyed it all. I really hope that they open a restaurant in DC because I don't know if I can afford to fly out to Chicago every time I'm craving their food, haha. All of the food was well seasoned, cooked to perfection and had good portion sizes. I ate the gumbo, the fish + grits, the mac + cheese, collard greens w/ smokey turkey, and the cornbread w/ honey butter. Omg, omg, omggggg like my friend and I were in a food trance because it was SO good. It is rare to go to a restaurant where ALL of the food items that you try are good. We started with the honey biscuits and pimento cheese, which were nothing short of addictive--soft, buttery biscuits with just the right touch of sweetness paired with rich, flavorful pimento cheese. They set the tone for an incredible meal. The roasted half chicken was perfectly cooked, juicy, and comforting in the best way. What a treat! This restaurant deserves all of the hype and then some. I felt lucky to get in on a Saturday evening because virtue is always busy. Upon entering I couldn't help but acknowledge how stunning the restaurant is. I love the attention to detail especially regarding the art. To avoid waiting my friend and I sat at the bar. Our bartender Henry was extremely kind and helpful going over the menu. We started off with drinks. I don't recall my drink but it was really good. We chose the friend green tomato's. These were delicious the shrimp was a nice touch and I'd order them again. For entrees we got the short rib, blackened fish, greens and Mac and cheese. The short rib was so tender and flavorful it's served with creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. Ugh my mouth is watering thinking about it. The greens so good I added vinegar but they didn't need them. The star was for sure the Mac and cheese my goodness super rich and creamy. My friend really enjoyed her dish she cleaned her plate. We were so full that we couldn't order dessert but I can't wait to go back and save room. read more

I finally made it back to Virtue with my best friends, and it still does not disappoint. The food was incredible...everything was on point. We sat on the opposite side of the restaurant this time and had an amazing experience. Our server was funny, attentive, and checked on us often. He even helped me remember song lyrics while we were joking around, which made the night even more fun. The ambiance is dark, rich, and sultry...definitely a place to dress up for. Expect to spend around $100-$150 per person, depending on what you order and if you get drinks, but it's absolutely worth it. Virtue is that perfect spot for great food and even better vibes. I've been here for a date and now with friends, and both times were flawless. You can tell they truly care about your experience. We tried several dishes, laughed all night, and had an unforgettable time. I can't wait to go back. read more

Still an amazing meal and got to meet Chef Damarr! Shout out to Henry for great service and the crowd and vibe was nice for a Friday date night. The gumbo is hands down my fave thing on the menu - I think about this gumbo all the time. But everything else we had was top notch too. - gumbo - I ate the whole thing myself and didn't split it - short ribs - a repeat that I love. Meat is SO tender and the grits are amazing - scallops - almost sold out that night and we can understand why - corn bread and honey - addictive - Mac n cheese - really rich and creamy - banana pudding - almost had no room for dessert but this is a favorite Drinks were solid and chef told us about the new bar they opened several months ago. I was super excited to try this place because of the segment on "Somebody Feed Phil" and man was it worth the hype. Virtue is a warm and inviting gem in Hyde Park close to campus. Service was outstanding and it feels homey inside. Everything we tried at was absolutely delicious. The mac and cheese, cornbread, and collard greens especially stood out--each dish was packed with flavor and perfectly cooked. You can really taste the care that goes into the food. Had a dinner reservation for 5:30 pm, it was already quite busy at the time and only got busier into the evening. We got the gumbo, short rib, Mac and cheese, and collard greens. Everything came out in a timely manner, and the service was very nice. The food was all delicious - the gumbo had a kick to it and was very flavorful. The short rib was cooked very well and super tender. The Mac and cheese was so cheesy and the baked crust on top was so rich but delicious! The collared greens were good as well, but we were already so full and could only eat a bit of it. Virtue is exactly who yall said it was. Excellent food, wonderful service, and mature vibes, overall great experience. We started with the gizzards over rice and a sauce that was both sweet and savory. For our mains we went with the short rib which was so moist, the potatoes were real potatoes that were creamy and well seasoned, there was also spinach and that was also well seasoned. The chicken dish had just the right amount of heat and I enjoyed the sweet potatos that accompanied that dish. That macaroni was out of this World delicious it was just the right amount of cheese with a baked top. The greens were good as well. We ended dinner with a great tasting banana pudding. We had such a great experience here! The food was absolutely delicious and the service was just as impressive. Everything came out hot, fresh, and full of flavor. We ordered the gumbo, gizzards, and beef short rib -- and honestly, every dish was a hit. The gumbo was rich and perfectly seasoned, the gizzards were crispy and tender, and the beef short rib just fell apart with every bite. You can really tell the food is made with care. I am dairy-free and they were able to accommodate that without sacrificing any flavor or quality. Our server was friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. Virtue was nothing short of an amazing dining experience. Located in Hyde park they take soul food to another level with a fantastic menu. They rotate their menu based on the season and what's available. So depending on the time of the year you may get a different menu. A very popular spot I highly recommend reservations you may be able to get a spot at the bar if it is just you. The food and service was fantastic and I really loved everything I had. From the start with the appetizers the fried green tomatoes and gumbo. My entree with the short rib, cornbread, Mac and cheese. Everything had great flavor and have great portion sizes to share. Read a lot about this place before coming to Chicago, so had to try it out! Food - 4.5/5 Cornbread - 4/5 - This was really good and the butter was so tasty, however, I think there's a bit too much. It would be better with maybe like a tablespoon or two of butter, in my opinion. Mac and Cheese - 4/5 - it was really tasty, but tooooo rich - you honestly can't eat more than one or two bites of this. The first few are great and then you really feel it. Beef Short Rib - 4.5/5 - the best beef short rib I've ever had. This was so tasty, and had the perfect texture... I enjoyed every bite. UNFORGETTABLE!! I had the absolute pleasure of dining at Virtue in Chicago for Valentine's Day, and let me just say -- it was an EXPERIENCE. From the moment we walked in, the ambience set the tone. The lighting was intimate without being too dim, the music was soulful and perfectly curated, and the energy in the room felt elevated yet welcoming. It struck the perfect balance for a romantic evening. The décor and artwork were stunning -- a beautiful fusion of African American heritage and West African influences. It felt intentional, rich, and culturally grounded without being overwhelming. Every detail added to the warmth of the space. Now let's talk about the service. Our server, Freddy, was AMAZING. Attentive without hovering, knowledgeable about the menu and wine list, and genuinely pleasant. He made our Valentine's experience feel special and seamless. The food? Exceptional. Every bite was flavorful, thoughtful, and beautifully prepared. You can tell there's passion in that kitchen. We started with one of their popular small rations, hot biscuits had a lightly crunchy top and were soft and moist inside, with a side of house made pimento cheese. This place is well loved and there's a reason why. Servers were hugging their regulars, and it was such a homey environment. Reminded me of my favorite restaurants in Harlem. Owner and team takes it beyond just food - you're here for an experience. Started with the drinks which were so fresh and managed to be sweet without being too sweet. Ordered everything at once so they created the ordering of items. It was the last of the summer menu so we tried the sunchokes salad (5 parts of the sunflower), which was laid over yogurt and herbs- so fresh! Also got the biscuits to start and man, I would eat these everyday if I could (shout out to the pastry chef). Maine were short rib (so tender) and fish & grits (bursting with flavor, blackened was a hint of heat but nothing too crazy). I need this fish & grits when it's 10 degrees out because I felt HEALED. Mac n cheese on the side was fire, with at least 5 different cheeses im assuming. Ordered the 7up cake with blueberries and ice cream and it was so light and airy, my favorite kind of cake! I made a reservation to celebrate my friend's birthday and we were very much looking forward to dining here. We were all coming from out of town and had heard great things. The ambiance when we walked in was relaxed elegance. It was a beautiful open dining room with large windows and stunning artwork all around. We arrived right on time for our reservation and had to wait a little bit to get seated as the host stand was pretty busy. Once we were seated, we were greeted by our server and given suggestions from the menu. We ordered a number of dishes off the menu including the blackened catfish, the half roasted chicken, the salmon, the gem lettuce, the collard greens, the Mac and cheese and the cornbread. Everyone enjoyed the food with the standouts being the salmon, the blackened catfish, the gem lettuce and the chicken. The sides were ok with the standout side being the cornbread. Our server was great, but towards the end of the night is when things started to go sideways. My friend had ordered another drink and we were also paying for the check when her drink arrived, as we were feeling rushed to vacate the table given the time limit imposed. We paid the check and my friend went to ask the host if she could finish her drink at the bar. The host gave her a bit of attitude but when my friend explained she just would stand by the bar and not sit down, that seemed ok. My friend quickly finished her drink as she felt quite uncomfortable given the exchange with the host. The fact that we felt extremely rushed towards the end of our meal and the exchange with the host left a bad taste in our mouths. The food was really good, but I don't know that I would return the next time I'm in Chicago. read more

PHENOMENAL experience, from the most delicious plates we've had in our year in chicago, to the top-notch professional but homely service. we came celebrating a graduation and our server, freddy, was great! he gave good recommendations, explained their menu well, and checked on us often without becoming bothersome. a wonderful touch was that the other staff running the food knew exactly who ordered what in order to drop it off rather than playing the "auctioning" off our food game. ambience was wonderful, nice decor and music. but the FOOD. holy moly! we've lived in hyde park nearly a year and i'm upset it took us this long to try it! the short rib was incredible, flavorful, tender, to die for. the MAC AND CHEESE! omg! i didn't know mac and cheese could be so flavorful. the cheese sauce was rich and creamy, and wonderfully seasoned. and finally, the banana pudding was the PERFECT way to end the meal. they served some kind of ice cream on top which was probably the most delicious vanilla ice cream i've ever tried. it tasted buttery and rich and smooth. so so good. it even came out with a "congrats!" message for our grad celebration. to top off the experience, what appeared to be the manager of the place came and congratulated us personally, bagging our leftover boxes without us even asking, and being SO kind and welcoming while chatting with us. you can just tell this place really cares about their guests. overall, a truly delightful experience. this place is more than worth all of the hype you here. thank you virtue for the wonderful way to end our celebration! read more

I had 4:30 pm reservations at Virtue since all the other times for the day were booked, and I'm so glad I was able to get in. My dinner partner and I weren't very hungry after a late brunch, so we decided to share a few appetizers. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, mac & cheese, and cornbread. Everything was fresh and made to order. The cornbread arrived hot with whipped butter, slightly grainy in texture, but still delicious. The fried green tomatoes were perfectly seasoned, with firm tomatoes inside and a crunchy exterior. The remoulade paired with them was spot on. The mac & cheese was creamy, cheesy, and baked to perfection. For dessert, we shared the banana pudding, which came with a thoughtful birthday wish and candle from the staff. That small touch made the evening feel extra special. Overall, I truly enjoyed my visit to Virtue. The service was warm, the food was memorable, and the atmosphere made for a great dining experience. I'm looking forward to returning to explore more of their menu. read more

Yes, but mostly if you are a carnivore! There's greens and turkey, vegetables, rice, meat, and desserts like ice cream, but check the season.
