Some friends and I visited Chicago recently and were looking for restaurants to have dinner. When I saw that Virtue was Black owned and operated, I made a reservation. I'm glad that I did. We were greeted upon arrival, and seated shortly thereafter. Our server, David came over and spoke to us about the menu selections. We were extremely satisfied with his service. I was truly impressed with Lou, who I assume was operating in a managerial capacity. He went from table to table checking in with the guests to find out if anything was needed. He removed plates of finished food from tables, and even explained the desert options to us. Well done. The food was delicious! I usually have to add salt to my food. I did not have to add anything here. The food was perfectly seasoned. We all enjoyed our choices. I would highly recommend this restaurant without hesitation. read more

I was excited to visit Virtue because it is a Michelin Star rated restaurant plus I love supporting Southern inspired cuisine. Although I was rooting for my experience to be stellar my experience at Virtue was disappointing. Lets start with what went well. The restaurant has dinner only hours so be mindful of that. We didn't have a reservation so we were seated at the bar. Our bartender was kind and kept her area spotless. Fist bump to her for having tweezers to hand me my straw for my cocktail an intricate detail that warmed my little germ averted heart! She took our order right away! We were off to a good start than things went downhill from there. I'm very mindful of criticizing service times but sad to say service was significantly slow! We ordered the biscuits and cornbread as appetizers; biscuits took 30 minutes to arrive. Cornbread was delivered with my entree which took another 45 minutes. My server was not communicative about the wait times, maybe if he was I would have had a different perspective. In terms of my dishes I found that the biscuits were too dense and the cornbread needed more sugar. I didn't like the pimento spread that came with them. I tried doctoring it up with the local honey that was offered by my server, to no avail. I enjoyed my entree, catfish was packed with flavor but a little on the spicy side. The spices are ok with me because of my southern roots but some may have found it to be too spicy. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed my brown rice, it was fluffy, moist, and flavorful. It was not bland at all! I enjoyed the smokiness of my grilled carrots! Another awesome visit. This time, my friends and I decided to order several entrées and extra sides so we could have a little tasting experience and try a variety of dishes. One person in our group has dairy restrictions, and the restaurant did a great job accommodating her. All of the dishes that included dairy was served deconstructed so she could enjoy the components that worked for her dietary needs without compromising the rest of the dishes. For our mains, we ordered the beef short ribs with creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, and gravy, along with the half chicken with baby squash and green beans. For our additional sides, we had the cornbread with honey butter, collard greens with smoked turkey, and creamy mac and cheese. Everything was good, and everyone enjoyed their meals. You can really taste that home-cooking influence in the food. The flavors are comforting and familiar, but you're still getting that elevated restaurant experience. The half chicken was the standout dish of the night. It was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Everyone at the table agreed that it was our favorite. Our least favorite was the short rib. It was tender and cooked well, but we all felt like it was missing something. We couldn't quite put our finger on what it needed. After looking at photos from other diners, I noticed the gravy was incorporated in the rib. That may have been the missing element that brought the short rib together and given it that extra layer of flavor we were looking for. Overall, another good experience. I cannot stop thinking about this place. We were able to snag a last minute reservation and I am so grateful to have experienced this masterpiece of a restaurant. The vibes were very calming. I felt like I was in a smooth oasis in the middle of Chicago. The artwork reminded me of my grandmother's house. We started with the fried green tomatoes. They were topped with shrimp and absolutely delightful. The short rib was obviously the star of the show. It was tender and full of flavor. We also really enjoyed the chicken. The macaroni and cheese was probably one best I've ever had. The steak was okay, I would probably skip it unless you don't want anything else on the menu. The vibe was pretty relaxed and felt like you're in a family member's home. Service was fine with good pacing and consistent water refills, but nothing memorable. 6/10. The Biscuits (6/10) were soft but pretty bland on their own. Spreading the pimento cheese on made it much more flavorful. The Gizzards (7/10) had a perfectly crispy exterior and chewy texture. The chewy rice and sauce underneath added more flavor and texture which I liked. The Short Ribs (9/10) were the best dish. The meat fell apart with a rich, savory sauce. The creamy spinach and mashed potatoes made each bite richer, while the crispy onions added a nice crunch. The onions were a little oily but still worked well. The Fish & Grits (7/10) had tender fish with buttery, nicely textured grits. The crab étouffée added a savory sauce that gave the dish much more depth. The Mac & Cheese (6.5/10) had a nice browned crust and creamy cheese underneath, but the pasta was softer than I like and needed more salt and pepper. The Cornbread (6/10) was very buttery and soft with little crust, but the sweet honey butter was the highlight. The Blueberry Cobbler (5/10) had a pastry topping and a warm, very sweet blueberry filling. Overall, as someone who grew up in the South, I wasn't particularly impressed. THE HYPE IS REAL YALL!! The food was genuinely one of the best southern food I've ever had (coming from someone from the literal south). I had a 8:30pm reservation but they keep seating up until 9 when they closed; with a 15 min buffer. Everything had to be order all at once, including drinks and food. The dark interior is honestly very aesthetic and adds a moody vibe. I had the fish and grits, which was a HUGE portion, and the cornbread was insanely good as well. I was between that and the biscuits. I recommend the uncle honey as a drink because the flavors mix together so well! Also get the Millie's pudding (banana pudding) for dessert! Enjoyed visiting Virtue. A friend told us they had a great meal when they went so it's been on my list since then. I was able to find street parking about a block away which was great!! I like the look of the restaurant starting off with drinks I really liked the bizzy Izzy it had bourbon, sherry, pineapple and lemon. The other drink was beautiful and had nice flavor too but I think maybe all the egg white foam was a bit much for me after a few sips. I love the combination of flavors in it rum pomegranate and lime. For a starter we had the honey butter cornbread it was delicious light and buttery with a perfect amount of sweetness. The green tomatoes with shrimp was delicious as well I only wish it was bigger it had a nice cornmeal coating on the tomatoes and a tasty light herby sauce on the shrimp great pairing!! The Mac and cheese had a nice thick crust and the inside was a super gooey saucy Mac and cheese. I enjoyed it my mom thought the crust was a bit too thick. I also really liked the blackened catfish it had a very light delicate soft texture. The seasoning was light as well but it works because it tastes so clean and it forms with an its own sauce and rice that reminded me of a risotto and barbecued carrots. I kinda wish I would have gotten the collard greens I heard they were good but was already getting full. I'd definitely go back and enjoyed the meal!! I ascended. I was born and raised in South Carolina so I had high hopes and Virtue did NOT disappoint. We started with the biscuits and pimento cheese which I highly recommend. The biscuits were drop biscuits which is my preferred style (over flaky layers) but the pimento was a creamier texture than I usually like (I like a shred of cheese here and there). We also split the gumbo which skewed more red beans and rice, however, that's NOT a complaint I was in heaven especially with the large chunks of meat throughout. We split the short rib entree and didn't even need a knife to divvy out portions it was so incredibly tender. The mac and cheese side was godly and the collards were very flavorful--the turkey that came with it was also super tender. Food was DELICIOUS!!!! First time here, and I'm so glad my brother made reservations since it was getting busy. Upon arrival, we were greeted by two friendly greeters. We arrived 20 minutes before our scheduled reservation, but we were seated within five minutes of arriving. The server, David, greeted us promptly when we were seated. He mentioned that if you're ordering appetizers, they should be ordered with the main meal. While we looked over the menu, water was offered. I ordered Blackened Catfish over brown rice and carrots. The catfish was tender and perfectly seasoned. My brother had grilled flounder with creamed corn. Like the catfish, the trout was tender and well-seasoned. The corn had a slight sweetness. Roger had Short ribs and mashed potatoes. The ribs were tender and did not need any sauce because they were seasoned well. We also ordered a side dish of Macaroni and Cheese. It was delicious! A mixture of Gouda cheese and other cheeses. Very creamy! The top layer cheese was baked perfectly! If you know, you know, it's all about the top layer of cheese The APPETIZERS: The Gumbo was spicy but delicious! You only taste the spice at the end . It's not overly spicy; it's just right. The fried chicken gizzards were tender but could have used a bit more seasoning. It was served over brown rice and gravy. If I'm not mistaken, there were maybe 8 or 9 gizzards. The fried green tomatoes were perfect! From the seasoning to the grilled shrimp on top. Oh yes, grilled shrimp with this delicious sauce drizzled over the tomatoes. 3 or 4 shrimp. They were delicious! I've never had fried green tomatoes served w/grilled shrimp--definitely a must-try if you've never had it. For dessert, pineapple upside-down cake with coconut cream on the side. It was soooo good! They could have removed the coconut cream, as it was not needed. And it was a shareable portion for 2-3 ppl. There were other desserts, such as Blueberry Cobbler, Key Lime Pie, and Vanilla Ice Cream. If you're in the Hyde Park area, give these folks a try Oh yeah, the Manager, Louis, was walking the floor. I spoke with him briefly From what I observed, it's a very casual dress code--jeans, shorts, blazers, etc. And I loved the quotes on the outside window of those who were killed, like George Floyd and Sandra Bland. Overall, I had a really great experience at Virtue! Our waiter was lovely and the ambiance is great. Although some of the tables are slightly too close together for my liking, but no one sat next to us for most of our meal so that was nice. My other complaint is that our appetizers came out before our drinks which I didn't love. However, the appetizers were so good I was distracted from the fact that I didn't have a drink until the drink actually showed up! For an appetizer, we had the gumbo and the biscuits with pimento cheese. Both of these options were delicious. The biscuits were buttery and the gumbo was flavorful and was served piping hot. Next, we had the short rib with the mac and cheese and the collared greens. The short rib was very good but was perhaps a tad dry. But when eaten together with the potatoes and spinach, it was perfect. The mac and cheese was slightly too salty for my taste which was a disappointment because I typically love every mac and cheese I come across. I don't think i'd get it again. I'd recommend visiting Powell's or the Osaka Garden or some other places around the neighborhood to make a trip of it. I was surprised by how weak I felt the desserts were, but maybe we misordered or were just too full. I would definitely order the carb items and gizzards again. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Restaurant can be a little loud. Recommend making a reservation exactly one month in advance. They were very intentional from check-in to sitting down to being seated to be created by the waiter, ordering food food being placed at the table, clean up the check, and when you were leaving, it was an overall amazing experience. Greeted by two lovely hostesses, the music inside was vibing which prepared me for a lively experience. The restaurant is decorated with beautiful works of art. For the meal we shared the flounder, which was sautéed and served on a bed of sweet corn. Excellent! Although the flounder was a generous serving size, it was so yummy, we wished we had not shared it. For sides we had the macaroni and cheese and the greens. Both were excellent. The sides are sharable sized. The service was great. We were greeted almost immediately by our server who was knowledgeable about the menu. After ordering, our food came out in about 15 minutes! We enjoyed both of our drinks: Apple Jack and Southern Flower. Neither was too sweet and both were good enough to get again. It was hard to decide what to eat, but we settled on the Blackened Catfish and Short Rib with a side of Mac & Cheese. I honestly can't pick which main dish was the better of the two because both were just perfect and satisfying. The mac & cheese was also really good, but we wished they had a smaller side dish because it was a lot on top of everything else. It had such a nice crust to it though! I went on Easter Sunday with friends. From coming in to leaving, every staff member was amazing, welcoming and a special shoutout to our server Lenny. Lenny was so knowledgeable about the menu and was able to answer any questions I had as a first time guest. The flavors reminded me of a home cooked meal in my great grandmother's kitchen in northern Louisiana, or my great aunt in South Carolina. I come from a family with deep southern roots, so I appreciated the flavors rooted in Black Americana culture. It was like I was experiencing food and history. I tried Virtue twice because I thought I was harsh on them my first visit. This is a nice restaurant. The bartenders are excellent and provided a wonderful service experience during both my visits. I enjoyed the cornbread, gumbo, fish and grits. Everything tastes good. But for the price, it's certainly underwhelming. Maybe I'm biased because I'm from the south. If you don't have the opportunity to eat southern style food regularly, you'll love Virtue. But if you come from a family of southern cooks and/or have traveled extensively throughout the south, the flavors may not wow you. read more

All of the food was well seasoned, cooked to perfection and had good portion sizes. I ate the gumbo, the fish + grits, the mac + cheese, collard greens w/ smokey turkey, and the cornbread w/ honey butter. Omg, omg, omggggg like my friend and I were in a food trance because it was SO good. It is rare to go to a restaurant where ALL of the food items that you try are good. Ok the vibe, the service, the drinks, the food, all 100!!!! The catfish is soooo good. The only bummer is that they're only open for dinner! I wish they had a lunch. One of the truly good southern cuisine places in Chicago. read more
