Went to Virtue for the first time 2 weeks ago. Our son had gone with his girlfriend in the fall and found the food to be terribly salty, but he wanted to give it another try. Service was very slow, but the place was busy so we understood. Kitchen was extremely slow. Again we understood. Our food was very good. After watching desserts pass by our table all night we flagged down our waiter to order. We were told that we'd have to leave without dessert or coffee because our 90 minutes was almost up. We told him that most of that 90 minutes was spent waiting to order and waiting for our food. He spoke to his manager who confirmed that we'd have to leave. Terrible business model. With so many restaurant choices in Chicago, we won't be returning. read more

THE HYPE IS REAL YALL!! The food was genuinely one of the best southern food I've ever had (coming from someone from the literal south). I had a 8:30pm reservation but they keep seating up until 9 when they closed; with a 15 min buffer. Everything had to be order all at once, including drinks and food. The dark interior is honestly very aesthetic and adds a moody vibe. I had the fish and grits, which was a HUGE portion, and the cornbread was insanely good as well. I was between that and the biscuits. I recommend the uncle honey as a drink because the flavors mix together so well! Also get the Millie's pudding (banana pudding) for dessert! Hailing from the South we were like okay let's see if the food was worth all the hype. Honestly, it is not. It's just basic "elevated" soul food. Not sure why it's called that. Enjoyed visiting Virtue. A friend told us they had a great meal when they went so it's been on my list since then. I was able to find street parking about a block away which was great!! I like the look of the restaurant starting off with drinks I really liked the bizzy Izzy it had bourbon, sherry, pineapple and lemon. The other drink was beautiful and had nice flavor too but I think maybe all the egg white foam was a bit much for me after a few sips. I love the combination of flavors in it rum pomegranate and lime. For a starter we had the honey butter cornbread it was delicious light and buttery with a perfect amount of sweetness. The green tomatoes with shrimp was delicious as well I only wish it was bigger it had a nice cornmeal coating on the tomatoes and a tasty light herby sauce on the shrimp great pairing!! The Mac and cheese had a nice thick crust and the inside was a super gooey saucy Mac and cheese. I enjoyed it my mom thought the crust was a bit too thick. I also really liked the blackened catfish it had a very light delicate soft texture. The seasoning was light as well but it works because it tastes so clean and it forms with an its own sauce and rice that reminded me of a risotto and barbecued carrots. I kinda wish I would have gotten the collard greens I heard they were good but was already getting full. I'd definitely go back and enjoyed the meal!! We were lucky enough to be staying at a hotel on the same block making it in incredibly convenient getting there. Our server and overall service was attentive, welcoming and friendly. I'd recommend visiting Powell's or the Osaka Garden or some other places around the neighborhood to make a trip of it. I was surprised by how weak I felt the desserts were, but maybe we misordered or were just too full. I would definitely order the carb items and gizzards again. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Restaurant can be a little loud. Recommend making a reservation exactly one month in advance. Every time I come here it's always the same, amazing food and amazing service. For it to be late, they were packed! I had a 930 reservation, and they closed at 10. Service was great as usual. They were very attentive. The ambiance is beautiful and inviting. I ordered the short rib which was amazing as always! I also got the cornbread and Mac n cheese. Loved both as usual lol. My friend ordered the ny strip, and it was delicious too! That was my first time trying it, and it was seasoned so well! Overall, I had a really great experience at Virtue! Our waiter was lovely and the ambiance is great. Although some of the tables are slightly too close together for my liking, but no one sat next to us for most of our meal so that was nice. My other complaint is that our appetizers came out before our drinks which I didn't love. However, the appetizers were so good I was distracted from the fact that I didn't have a drink until the drink actually showed up! For an appetizer, we had the gumbo and the biscuits with pimento cheese. Both of these options were delicious. The biscuits were buttery and the gumbo was flavorful and was served piping hot. Next, we had the short rib with the mac and cheese and the collared greens. The short rib was very good but was perhaps a tad dry. But when eaten together with the potatoes and spinach, it was perfect. The mac and cheese was slightly too salty for my taste which was a disappointment because I typically love every mac and cheese I come across. I don't think i'd get it again. Yelp Top 100 nailed this one!! What a delicious meal! We were sat at the bar since the place was justifiably packed. Our bartender/server was great throughout the night. We enjoyed both of our drinks: Apple Jack and Southern Flower. Neither was too sweet and both were good enough to get again. I went on Easter Sunday with friends. From coming in to leaving, every staff member was amazing, welcoming and a special shoutout to our server Lenny. Lenny was so knowledgeable about the menu and was able to answer any questions I had as a first time guest. The flavors reminded me of a home cooked meal in my great grandmother's kitchen in northern Louisiana, or my great aunt in South Carolina. I come from a family with deep southern roots, so I appreciated the flavors rooted in Black Americana culture. It was like I was experiencing food and history. I think we cracked the code for the best order possible: Start with the biscuits and, if they're in season, the fried green tomatoes (soaked in buttermilk till they're tender and coated in a crispy cornmeal crust). I've seen every season of Top Chef and this Carrot Cake won Chef Demarr Brown a challenge. It was pretty spectacular. We were so excited to eat at this acclaimed restaurant during our visit to Chicago, and Virtue did not disappoint! We started with the biscuits with pimento cheese - buttery and flaky, and the pimento cheese was whipped and had a very subtle kick. The fried green tomatoes with gulf shrimp and remoulade - so light and fresh despite being fried, which balanced well with the creamy remoulade. The fish & grits - NO NOTES. Simply perfection, one of those dishes that will stick with you for a long, long time. The grits on their own were perfectly seasoned with a nice toothy texture. The crab étouffée was max crabby, and the blackened seasoning on the fish did not overwhelm the other flavors of the dish. The short rib was very well done - super tender fall-apart meat and paired with smooth mashed potatoes. Technically cooked well, but otherwise nothing about was super unique. We ended our meal with the banana pudding - a great classic that had tons of banana flavor and it was a huge portion. Definitely save space for dessert! We weren't shouting to talk but we had to ask the server to repeat himself several times cuz we couldn't hear over the noise, We had the cornbread which was wonderful. the gem salad is huge. A meal by itself. We also had the mac n cheese which really was melted cheese with some macaroni. More like a pasta fondue. The gumbo serving is large and no seafood though. The catfish is a filet and really tender. The fried green tomatoes were undercooked. The chicken is roasted so I went for the gizzards which were tender and nicely fried. They have a great cocktail and wine list. The noise level was the really turn off for us old folks. Also the AC in there is way insufficient for the number of guests. Mac and Cheese - 4/5 - it was really tasty, but tooooo rich - you honestly can't eat more than one or two bites of this. The first few are great and then you really feel it. Beef Short Rib - 4.5/5 - the best beef short rib I've ever had. This was so tasty, and had the perfect texture... I enjoyed every bite. Service - 5/5 - Everyone was friendly and helpful, really appreciate the good service. Ambiance - 5/5 - Nice lighting, good character and feel.. perfect for a date or a night out.
