I have been going to this location since it opened so I reached out to them personally about this issue. No response, which is disappointing. They have switched to bigger buns, which are just too much bread. I thought it was lazy that they didn't even spread the sauce around at all. I could barely detect the grilled onions and I asked for extra pickles but got just a few. Because of all of this, the burger was dry and flavorless. Overrated. I visited Small Cheval for the first time and was underwhelmed by the experience. It wasn't bad. There simply wasn't anything special about the food. Upon arrival, there was a ten-minute wait. There was only one guy working the register, so it took awhile to get to the front. They should've had an employee walking the line and taking orders in an effort to speed things up. I ordered two single burgers and an order of fries. I opted to forgo the drinks and walked across the street to CVS where they had two 20-ounce sodas for $5. Why would you pay $3 for a can of soda when you could get more for less? The burgers were okay. They were definitely smaller than I anticipated. I had a burger a couple of weeks ago in the south loop at Mark Weather Tavern that was twice the size, tastier, and cheaper. It only cost $7 due to the happy hour special. My sister didn't like her burger so she ended up just picking at it. I liked mine but that's not saying much. I wouldn't go out of my way visit Small Cheval again nor would I recommend it to anyone. There are MUCH better burger options in the city. This place must be relying primarily on it's name recognition because $25 for two mediocre burgers and a small order of fries is insane. The fries were decent, but again, nothing spectacular. The location is obviously the selling point. Hyde Park is a beautiful area to sit outside and enjoy a burger. The inside of the restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and fairly spacious for the neighborhood. The patio has generous seating with plenty of shade. Terrible!!! Brought my son here before a show because I was hearing that they have the best burgers in Chicago. The one star is for the cashier who took our order. He was very nice. I paid $50 for a single cheeseburger, a double cheeseburger, one order of fries, and two drinks. The burgers are advertised is coming with sauce, grilled onion and pickle. When we sat down and started to dress our burgers, I realized they forgot the onions on both so I went back inside and he took our sandwiches back to fix the order. I took the burgers back to our table, we open the buns again, and still no onion. I felt like this was a prank! I go back up and I say to the guy that maybe I am misunderstanding something because again, there are no onions. With a gloved finger he points out to me the 3 specs of grilled onion on the sandwich as if this is the normal amount that goes on their burgers. I asked for two cups of grilled onions and by the time I finally got them and sat down, our burgers were cold. On top of that, they were not very flavorful. The only seasoning I could taste was salt. The pickles didn't even have a pickle flavor! My son thought the fries were nothing special and we have very standard lemonade with way too much ice which gave us about three gulps of lemonade. First of all these burger's are incredible! The consistency of the melty cheese to double patty was amazing. This location had such wonderful food! The fries were crispy and seasoned just the right amount. The service was fast paced and customer friendly! They worked as a team despite being slammed right after we took our order. Didn't even know there was a Small Cheval in Hyde Park, so I was very excited to stop by and try it! I've had Small Cheval before, just at the West Loop location, but Hyde Park was equally as great! It still has that old timey yet nice look inside. The girl at the counter was great. There's some seating on the inside, but plenty of outdoor seating which also leads to the park next to it. Decent fast food in Hyde Park. In my opinion it's better than Five Guys. Good burgers , good chicken sandwiches , decent fries. I'm picky with fries. I really liked the chicken sandwich. Had to try it since it's "famous". Husband got the double cheeseburger. We cut our sandwiches in half to enjoy the next day. He tried as is for first try but will pass on sauce for second time. Yes this means there will be a second time. (And more). Sandwich/ burger heats decently in microwave. Not a terrible wait time for food. Can be busy but the staff rock. Took our food to go. It definitely dwarfed the single beef patty. The beef was cooked medium and was pretty juicy but the burger was lukewarm and I didn't feel like the beef was particularly special or well-seasoned. It was fine, like a backyard burger. I did like that there were a decent number of pickles included and plenty of lettuce (iceberg, though). I prefer Shake Shack's burgers with their higher-quality toppings and potato bun. Fries were hot and somewhat crispy--not super crispy, but that garlic aioli can right plenty of wrongs! This might have been the best burger I've ever had no joke -- idk if it's because I ate it seconds after it was prepared but straight up a religious experience The burger was soft, melted in your mouth, and flavorful. The onions were perfectly caramelized and distributed in every bite. I had a much better experience at the Hyde park location vs the old town location. I love that they have spreecher root beer on tap. The rainbow birthday cake concrete was absolutely phenomenal. Knocked it out of the park, I was I could get a quart of that to take home. I got my fries well done, and I thought they were exactly as advertised - crispy, crunchy, perfect. They gave me lots of garlic aioli and I probably went through 3-4 of those little cups on my fries. The burger was also delicious, although I think I'll keep with the single, just a personal preference as the burger was delicious and perfectly cooked. I'll be honest, it's not my favorite cut, but it is tasty. The milkshakes were excellent. It had thick chunks in the milkshake, yet it was still drinkable through a straw. Overall, this place is a very good option for intimate 2 person hangouts or by yourself. And it has solid seating for a large group. I will warn you that the seating options are mostly outside with just a handful of indoor options. I grew up on the south side and so I wanted to go to Small Cheval Hyde Park because I just love the area. The space is small but so welcoming, warm, has some nostalgic aesthetics, and it's just cool. The staff was awesome, it was busy, we went for lunch on Friday and the energy was so positive and energetic. It was easy to order and the food came out in a timely manner. The burger looked perfect, the bun was perfect, and the flavor of the burger was delicious. We ate out in their outdoor seating area and it was perfect. I've been to Au Cheval in the West Loop, but was in the area so we stopped in for lunch at Small Cheval. We placed our order at the counter, and the guy taking the order was super friendly. I actually ordered water, and he let me know that he could just get me a cup of water instead if I wanted which actually saved me a couple of bucks. After placing our order, we sat at the bar stools facing the street. The food took about 15 minutes to be ready. The cheeseburger was delicious and so were the fries. The fries are definitely large enough to share. The burger did taste slightly different than the one from Au Cheval, but still very good nonetheless. I had one of the most bizarre dining experiences here. I ordered a burger, fries, coke and my friend ordered a chicken sandwich and a beer. She got her beer, and we sat down to wait on the rest. When our food came, it didn't come with the coke. No problem, we go up to remind the cashier about it -- it was a busy day so I totally understand things get lost in the shuffle. But the cashier tells us no, we didn't order a coke, and that if we had ordered a coke she would have given it to us at the front when we paid. (This spot has one of those electronic devices that shows you your order as the cashier is entering it, so I saw that she rung in the coke, but must have forgotten.) I decide to just forget about it, it's a holiday weekend and I understand she probably doesn't want to be working, and it's a lesson to me to always ask for a recipt. Anyway, we get the food. Burger and fries are fine, nothing to write home about. The chicken, however, is very good. If I ended up here again that's what I would get. We finish our meal and I decide I want to try the ice cream. I go up to the front, and as I do, the cashier looks up, sees me, and then turns around to do something else. I get to the cash register and I see her fumbling around behind the counter refusing to make eye contact with me, presumably because she thinks I'm there to complain about the coke? I wait there for a few minutes, because I really do want this ice cream, and it's not until other people start lining up behind me that I see her go to the back, tell another team member "I can't handle this," and then he comes over to take my order while she opens another register. I just wanted to order ice cream! The ice cream, I will say, was phenomenal. I purposefully waited a few weeks to post this review because I'm not trying to get anyone in trouble. I have to imagine the management must have really strict rules about process and how food is sent out for someone to be that upset about someone requesting the drink they ordered. Will I return? I could see myself, if I was already on 53rd, stopping here for a quick treat since the ice cream really was quite good. If I was with a friend who wanted to go here, I wouldn't say no, and I would get the chicken, but I'm not making an effort to go back. Nope. If I closed my eyes as I took a bite I'd have thought I was eating a circus clown"s rubber chicken that he had slipped in between a hamburger bun. I'm sorry--the burger wasn't tasty. I believed the branding and marketing and trusted the reviews. It wasn't super hot and it was dripping with juices or leaking water or oozing its essence into my take out bag. The best part of this culinary experience was a wonderful staff and a clean and inviting atmosphere. I also liked the beeper-- it was cute. The patty had no flavor or seasoning and was finally getting ready to get down with the finest man in the world but when he removes his garments you realize there's only a Vienna sausage. So you excuse yourself to a bathroom and pretend your Gram grandmother just fell of the bed so you can leave. There was no mouthwatering aroma; not even from the onions; and though the burger was Instagram-ready it wasn't what I expected based on most reviews. I won't be back, except to to accompany an unsuspecting frenemy.
