As a burger aficionado, I'm not at all extremely particular about the build of beef licious salad covered in bread, however, this place gives me a new class of lessons I hadn't known I'd be so late for! Upon entering the enticing brick and mortar arena of class and burger, I went to my go to. Bacon. A bacon cheeseburger...as is. And what I was given wasn't so bad. Of course mustard, ketchup and some mayo is like the common denominator for my interest, however , this placed offered an alternative and it bothered me a tad bit. Yes, there is decor and artsy menu options Yes, there are live philodendrons cascading the walls BUT. a lady wants mustard on her burger...a lady wants lettuce and tomato without asking! Didn't even know there was a Small Cheval in Hyde Park, so I was very excited to stop by and try it! I've had Small Cheval before, just at the West Loop location, but Hyde Park was equally as great! It still has that old timey yet nice look inside. The girl at the counter was great. There's some seating on the inside, but plenty of outdoor seating which also leads to the park next to it. As for the food, I really enjoyed it! I got a single cheeseburger, but I realized why they push the double. The buns are so big you barely taste the meat! I also added lettuce and tomatoes. Decent fast food in Hyde Park. In my opinion it's better than Five Guys. Good burgers , good chicken sandwiches , decent fries. I'm picky with fries. I really liked the chicken sandwich. Had to try it since it's "famous". Husband got the double cheeseburger. We cut our sandwiches in half to enjoy the next day. He tried as is for first try but will pass on sauce for second time. Yes this means there will be a second time. (And more). Sandwich/ burger heats decently in microwave. Not a terrible wait time for food. Can be busy but the staff rock. Took our food to go. Walked about 20 min home (warm day). I would probably bring something to keep food warm when we go back in winter. read more

This spot has a great outdoor space with plenty of picnic tables--it's cute and perfect for summer! I had the single deluxe cheeseburger ($8.99) and fries (~$5). First of all, that bun is huge! It definitely dwarfed the single beef patty. The beef was cooked medium and was pretty juicy but the burger was lukewarm and I didn't feel like the beef was particularly special or well-seasoned. It was fine, like a backyard burger. I did like that there were a decent number of pickles included and plenty of lettuce (iceberg, though). I prefer Shake Shack's burgers with their higher-quality toppings and potato bun. Fries were hot and somewhat crispy--not super crispy, but that garlic aioli can right plenty of wrongs! I have to admit that this is a cool spot in an area with a lot of neat businesses. I had my elderly client in the area, and she loved revisiting her old neighborhood. They touted this as a neighborhood favorite of theirs and I cen cerainly see why - quality burger beyond your standard Five Guys (which I would consider "higher-end" of fast food - so definitely felt like I was getting a good product and for a fairly reasonable price! As someone who's been a regular for a while, you all are too expensive to be playing these games. Look at the pictures. What were you all doing in the kitchen? These are simple basic things I asked for. The chicken is gristly and hardly coated... it's not even warm-- then you forget the cheese. They do have a lovely outside patio with tables that I'll have to check out when it's a bit warmer outside. I had a much better experience at the Hyde park location vs the old town location. I love that they have spreecher root beer on tap. The rainbow birthday cake concrete was absolutely phenomenal. Knocked it out of the park, I was I could get a quart of that to take home. I got my fries well done, and I thought they were exactly as advertised - crispy, crunchy, perfect. They gave me lots of garlic aioli and I probably went through 3-4 of those little cups on my fries. The burger was also delicious, although I think I'll keep with the single, just a personal preference as the burger was delicious and perfectly cooked. The dijionnaise is delightful as always, and the amount of lettuce is always perfect. I had a pick up order, the guys at the counter were delightful. I'll be honest, it's not my favorite cut, but it is tasty. The milkshakes were excellent. It had thick chunks in the milkshake, yet it was still drinkable through a straw. Overall, this place is a very good option for intimate 2 person hangouts or by yourself. And it has solid seating for a large group. I will warn you that the seating options are mostly outside with just a handful of indoor options. I grew up on the south side and so I wanted to go to Small Cheval Hyde Park because I just love the area. The space is small but so welcoming, warm, has some nostalgic aesthetics, and it's just cool. The staff was awesome, it was busy, we went for lunch on Friday and the energy was so positive and energetic. It was easy to order and the food came out in a timely manner. The burger looked perfect, the bun was perfect, and the flavor of the burger was delicious. We ate out in their outdoor seating area and it was perfect. I saw many others ordering the chicken sandwich, I was ballsy and asked a customer how they liked it and she said it was great! I want to try the next time I'm in town! read more

I've been to Au Cheval in the West Loop, but was in the area so we stopped in for lunch at Small Cheval. We placed our order at the counter, and the guy taking the order was super friendly. I actually ordered water, and he let me know that he could just get me a cup of water instead if I wanted which actually saved me a couple of bucks. After placing our order, we sat at the bar stools facing the street. The food took about 15 minutes to be ready. The cheeseburger was delicious and so were the fries. The fries are definitely large enough to share. The burger did taste slightly different than the one from Au Cheval, but still very good nonetheless. The incredibly friendly service really stood out though. When in the area, I'd definitely stop here again. read more

I had one of the most bizarre dining experiences here. I ordered a burger, fries, coke and my friend ordered a chicken sandwich and a beer. She got her beer, and we sat down to wait on the rest. When our food came, it didn't come with the coke. No problem, we go up to remind the cashier about it -- it was a busy day so I totally understand things get lost in the shuffle. But the cashier tells us no, we didn't order a coke, and that if we had ordered a coke she would have given it to us at the front when we paid. (This spot has one of those electronic devices that shows you your order as the cashier is entering it, so I saw that she rung in the coke, but must have forgotten.) I decide to just forget about it, it's a holiday weekend and I understand she probably doesn't want to be working, and it's a lesson to me to always ask for a recipt. Anyway, we get the food. Burger and fries are fine, nothing to write home about. The chicken, however, is very good. If I ended up here again that's what I would get. We finish our meal and I decide I want to try the ice cream. I go up to the front, and as I do, the cashier looks up, sees me, and then turns around to do something else. I get to the cash register and I see her fumbling around behind the counter refusing to make eye contact with me, presumably because she thinks I'm there to complain about the coke? I wait there for a few minutes, because I really do want this ice cream, and it's not until other people start lining up behind me that I see her go to the back, tell another team member "I can't handle this," and then he comes over to take my order while she opens another register. I just wanted to order ice cream! The ice cream, I will say, was phenomenal. I purposefully waited a few weeks to post this review because I'm not trying to get anyone in trouble. I have to imagine the management must have really strict rules about process and how food is sent out for someone to be that upset about someone requesting the drink they ordered. Will I return? I could see myself, if I was already on 53rd, stopping here for a quick treat since the ice cream really was quite good. If I was with a friend who wanted to go here, I wouldn't say no, and I would get the chicken, but I'm not making an effort to go back. I believed the branding and marketing and trusted the reviews. It wasn't super hot and it was dripping with juices or leaking water or oozing its essence into my take out bag. The best part of this culinary experience was a wonderful staff and a clean and inviting atmosphere. I also liked the beeper-- it was cute. The patty had no flavor or seasoning and was finally getting ready to get down with the finest man in the world but when he removes his garments you realize there's only a Vienna sausage. So you excuse yourself to a bathroom and pretend your Gram grandmother just fell of the bed so you can leave. There was no mouthwatering aroma; not even from the onions; and though the burger was Instagram-ready it wasn't what I expected based on most reviews. I won't be back, except to to accompany an unsuspecting frenemy. Five Guys down the street is much better; and I suppose so is a Nicky's Big Baby or any of the greasy spoon spots with crowded lobbies and hungry customers. Years ago I swore off visiting any of the small Cheval because although sufficient for hunger if you've ever had an au Cheval burger before this place is a mere shadow of the decadence of the real thing. With that aside what drove me here was the Wagyu truffle cheese burger. This tasted like the regular burgers from here so I'm not sure what's to justify the up-charge. As someone who covets real wagyu as well as real shaved truffles this burger had neither flavor. Was still a decent burger but nowhere near worth the price. One of the reasons I swore to not visit was also the fact that every time I get food from here it always lukewarm. Fries were ok, nice crispiness.
