The food at this location is great! My issue is they are charging for bread?! Like c'mon seriously the bread is mandatory and now you're charging for it. Although the price isn't much it's the principle! I know the economy is not the best but this is just outrageous. I could understand if there was a charge for an additional slice of bread, but not the initial slice. I don't think I'll be going back the prices are already high and this just put the icing on the cake. I'm pretty sure they don't care about losing my few dollars just thought I would make others aware. read more

Harold's is a South Side institution and this place is an excellent place to satisfy your craving. Harold's was designed for each franchise to develop its own ambiance/vibe - it was specifically trying to avoid the cookie cutter molds you see from other fast food places. This is probably why it's a bit inconsistent from location to location; this franchise is great. My usual order is a half chicken meal with both mild and spicy sauce. I thought this came out great - it has the same excellent taste as the other Harold's places I've been to. It's been rated as one of the best Harold's in Chicago and I think the ranking makes sense. The location itself is very clean and everyone was very friendly. There are a few tables around but it's not designed for you to dine-in; it's made for takeout. Harold's cooks its meals to order so expect to wait at least 10 minutes. It's not as fast as your other fast food franchises - but most fast food places don't cook your meal to order so I think it's well worth the wait. They also accept grubhub orders here if you don't want to order at the counter and wait. I think it's definitely worth the wait - Harold's is something I try to get whenever I am back in Chicago! read more

Best Harold's in the city. I always used to get half white, salt/pepper and hot on the side. After a while I started getting mixed buckets because I could eat it and not have to cook for a couple days. The breading is nice and if you get your sauce on the side the chicken stays crispier. Livers are good and I like their okra too. There's no real consistency between different Harold's locations. Some are terrible. Some are decent. Some are real good. This location is my favorite for the consistent food quality. P.S. I know where they get their hot sauce and buy it to use at home. It's really good stuff, similar to Frank's but more vinegar and spice. read more

Hard to understand complaints about Harold's, this one or any of them. There can be some inconsistency between locations, sure, but overall it's exactly what you're looking for if you're looking for fried chicken. Complaints about speed of service also annoy me somewhat: this place is an institution. Honestly, if you really think about it, you are probably also slow. The service was slow when I went, but I also don't blame them from mostly switching to a pickup-oriented service model that assumes more time between order and pickup than what happens when you order in person and wait in the restaurant. The "slowness" is also the reason the food is so fresh. I ordered a white 1/4 dinner. Excellent. It was so perfectly fried, I was shocked to see there were almost no bones left when I was done. As a former Chicagoan who doesn't get to have Harold's whenever I want anymore, I'm happy to see this institution surviving despite the past few years. read more

August 13, 2022, dining after parade with the lovebugs. It was the kids and I first time in Chicago, but not bay's. As a foodblogger and foodie, I eat by researching reviews, food pictures, and presentation of the food first-hand. This establishment is a Chi-town staple; but the wait time was not bad at all. Not sure if it was meant to dine-in because they had the bigger tables blocked off. On the other hand, there were 2 smaller tables visible, but already occupied. We cleaned the tables off and sat down after the previous customers. Then proceeded to wait for our food to be ready. I ordered 2pc catfish and 2 wings (lemon pepper), came with order of fries. My food was seasoned well, not salty at all - just bursting with flavor. Of course I'd visit Harold's Chicken #88, considered to be the best of all the Chicken Shacks. Harold's Chicken Shack was explicitly called out as the place to go for Chicago's take on fried chicken when I visited Skydeck earlier. The breading, the crispiness, the crunchiness is perfect. They've got the right amount of salt in their fried chicken. The fries are well done. The sauce is legitimately spicy; there's a clear difference between spicy and mild. What's great about the mild sauce is that it's not a sweet sauce--it is actually "mild." Main downsides I see are the unusually small amount of coleslaw and the current tax due to the wing shortage (20% tax is hard to chew on). The 1/4 chicken dinner is what I'd recommend people get. Gotta love Harold's. Especially at this location. It's conveniently located near the Cell, and unlike other locations, they actually have good customer service. After I ordered my chicken dinner, she politely advised it would be 15 minutes. It was more like 25 but that's ok. You know you're getting fresh fried chicken at the end of the day. Their credit card machine actually worked and I asked for extra hot and mild sauce on the side and I was prepared to pay for it, but they never asked me for additional money. As for the chicken? I mean damn. Freshly fried golden chicken covered with fries and plenty of mild and hot sauce covering everything. Definitely no skimping going on here. You can either eat the bread at the bottom during your meal or wait to the end once it's sucked up all the mess from the food. Gotta love Harold's man. read more

Our team decided to stop by there to grab some food. They said the service was friendly. They also grabbed me some takeout. I only wanted a piece of chicken and to try these things called taffy grapes. He came back k with a 2pc, fries and the grapes because this location doesn't see one piece of chicken. The chicken was tasty, reminded me of Popeyes. The fries not so much. They were soggy, but they included all these sauces and they did the trick. Their sauces are really good. I tried bbq and another sweet and tangy one. Now I've never heard of a taffy grape until being here. They were pretty interesting. It was basically green grapes dipped in a Carmel flavored chocolate shell with crushed peanuts on top. They tasted ok kind of like a candy apple bite. Overall the food was ok. Great chicken! This is the best Harolds I've had in a long time! I've been to probably 7 different locations around the city and South suburbs. Didn't have to wait long for our food. Got there around 2:15 pm on a Sunday afternoon. Adequate sized pieces and generous serving of fries. Also gave me a good amount of sauce. I usually have to ask for more at other locations. Cool photos of Black celebrities and historical figures on the wall. There are tables to eat inside and it looked clean. read more

Harold's is a Chicago staple but let's be honest, all Harolds are not the same. Downtown is not as good as the south, south, south side (Kanye West voice). When I get Harolds normally I get a three-piece but this time I went with a four-piece dinner. Typically, a dinner comes with french fries, one piece of bread and a small coleslaw. I requested extra mild sauce, that the wings be fried hard and added lemon pepper... I was taught by some of Chicago's finest how to eat this and eat it right! I'm not sure if I was just HeMan hunger but it was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious delicious!! I went right in and the next thing I knew it was gone; I was still hungry and as I sucked the mild sauce off my fingers and shook my head I just keep saying out loud that was fire, dang that was good. The chicken was crispy on the outside yet supremely juicy on the inside and seasoned for the Gods!!! I would highly recommend this location. The store was clean and the service was on point. My grandmother lives by this Harold's which is why I have come here a number of times. I really like their catfish here, perfectly seasoned and cooked just right. They have all of the other signature Harold's items, and for the most part, the wait isn't too long. However, I did notice a new COVID tax/fee, which I wasn't too happy about. This was my First time checking this Harold's location out. I had ordered one of their shrimp specials, that came with fries and bread. The shrimps were ok, just didn't like the thick batter. A new Harold's chicken shack has just opened up around the corner from my place and I am sure glad it finally did. The chicken is as fresh as it can get, right out of the deep fryer and into your hands. You can choose to get the sauce on your chicken or on the side. Their dinner items all come with fries and coleslaw I opted to get the 8 piece mixes bucket for $15. The chicken thighs were a little dry but still very delicious. The wings and drumsticks were spot on especially with the spicy sauce. The reason why I gave it only 4 was because the coleslaw was so tiny that what's the point of even giving it out. read more

I've eaten fried chicken before but never had them at Harolds. I enjoyed every bite of my three piece dark meat wing dinner. They asked me how I wanted the dinner - They raffled thru a bunch of options and I asked for the normal. He stood there for a second and smiled. I waited 15 minutes and received a gold mine. The wings came out smelling scrumptious - I could not wait do dive in the wings, that were soaked with bbq sauce. This is a really nice, recently renovated Harold's Chicken Shack with a few tables and chairs. The interior is nice and clean. We ordered three half chicken dinners (mixed dark and white). Don't kid yourself when you think you're getting coleslaw. It's a Mcdonalds' ketchup sized plastic cup of coleslaw. The white bread at the bottom of the chicken helps soak up the mild or hot sauce. Mild sauce is like a combo of bbq and ketchup, hot sauce is like a vinegary tabasco based sauce. Beware they don't give you plastic bags, your food gets shoved inside a paper bag that gets greasy by the time you drive home. All part of the experience, my friends.
