The food was horrible! I saw a couple of reviews and thought maybe I could try it since I'm not a pork barbecue person but I do like to try different bbq non-pork products. My friend got the large rib tips and I got the chicken tips. She was big-time pissed off because she said the meat was either old, and they reheated it or it was a bad piece of meat - tough and overcooked. I been going to Honey for years. I went on 11Mar 26 and ordered an extra large rib tip and when I got to work, first of all the meat quality was not the same. It was more fat than lean meat. I came here for two reasons: 1) Reputation and 2) it took forever to get our food from the place around the block whose owner attended an HBCU. I ordered tips and link. Honey 1 serves some good tasting rib tips and some damn good links. They're customer service is also excellent. I ordered one large and one small rib tip and link combo. The pricing isn't that bad, but you don't get a lot of food for the money being spent. I almost finished my entire large combo, and for the same money at a different location, there was still half the food left. It's also the not best tasting rib tips I've had, but they were still good. The sauce was good but could have used some more sauce. The sauce was more on the sweet side, as described but they're "honey 1" name. I do prefer a spicier sauce, but it was still tasty. The meat also wasn't as tender but still had a nice Smokey taste to it and a couple of burnt pieces. The links however, were very tasty. They had a soft chorizo type of bite to them and also came with a kick. I also wish this could have added more fries. I would recommend Honey 1 BBQ to others and wouldn't mind coming back. Lately, I've been trying to do a better job of rating restaurants relative to their direct competition. Reading reviews comparing neighborhood favorites to Michelin stalwarts compelled me to rant in a few reviews, lol. Also it's probably a reflection of my food addiction that I've grown to understand the nuances of local cuisines so intimately. For example. ..reviewers often complain about the two slices of white bread accompanying fried chicken and fried fish in Chicago. The bread is there to absorb the excess grease from the fryer. You wouldn't want your food sitting in a pool of grease would you? Some eat it. Some don't. Another regional thing people don't seem to grasp is Chicago Style BBQ. For decades, long before Smoque BBQ & Green Street Smoked Meats, Chicago's BBQ scene was established by black owned BBQ joints on the South and West Sides. Many of the black families in Chicago have roots in Mississippi and that influenced the BBQ. The legendary Lem's BBQ brothers came from MS. In Chicago you'll find Aquarium Smokers, wood fire and "mild sauce" (no, this doesn't mean mild bbq sauce). The cut of choice is the rib tip and the cooking method is actually hot and relatively fast, not the low and slow style most are accustomed to. Hot links and chicken wings also beat out full slabs in the pecking order. Sides typically include fries, coleslaw and white bread (if you count that as a side, lol). ..that's it. No more complaints about mac n' cheese, baked beans or corn bread being missing from the menu. These are not those kind of places. Also on a side note. ..please stop complaining about BBQ not being fall off the bone tender. Any true pitmaster will tell you that is not the goal. In fact, 100% of BBQ judges will penalize competitors for "fall off the bone" BBQ. Ribs shouldn't be tough, but should have "bite". ..competition judges literally expect to see where they bit into the rib. Now after that long history lesson of a rant. ..Honey1 is a very solid Chicago BBQ joint, 3.5 stars. Not as good as Lem's, but better than Kenny's and in the same class as Alice's. Though I'm not a huge fan, the hot links are their specialty. They cut them into bites unless you request them whole. This place is cash only, but there's an ATM. If you are visiting Chicago there are better options, but Honey1 isn't bad at all. Not worth a special trip. I rounded up because the service is actually friendly. Worst barbecue I've ever had... They were out of slabs of pork ribs, so I ordered the brisket. It was tender, but very greasy. They serve it on a bun, with frozen crinkle fries. I also ordered a small side of beans, and a small side of coleslaw. If you want me to bring you down a real pot of barbecue beans, let me know... Yours were gelatinous and flavorless. Pretty good. Came here on a Sunday bcuz Mr J's was closed, this was a good choice. As some of the reviews mention, they need to further critique the sauce it is a bit bland. Otherwise, the ribs are juicy & tender. It seems no one ever gives enough fries these days, but even those were on point (still was a slight crispiness to them). Was looking forward to having some authentic barbecue during the Labor Day holiday, but this unfortunately was a disappointment.
