How could I pass this place almost every school day for almost 2 years and not stop in until now? Well now that's changed. This is a great greasy spoon that quite literally has everything. Only downside is the limited seating. Really nice staff. Good tasting food (that may or may not be good for the arteries but so it goes!). They also serve crinkle cut fries which is a bonus for me. Hubs got the Chicago dog. I got the Philly cheesesteak. My stomachless self was able to pretty much eat all of it (albeit slowly). We enjoyed our lunch for sure. Looking for a place in Hyde Park with a true Chicago hot dog experience? Today I was on 53rd St. and went into Nathan's. Hallelujah! I got two Chicago hot dogs and french fries and a drink for ~$13 before taxes, cc surcharge and tip. I went to Nathan's to try Chicago food on my vacation, in lieu of taking all the travel time to go to places like Mr. Beef and other far flung locations that I knew were famous for certain dishes. Big Mistake!!! Nathan's Italian Beef sandwich looked camera-ready, but the taste was just "okay" -- as was everything else I ate at Nathans Chicago during the week I was staying a couple of blocks away. If I had known ahead of time, I would never have cut corners and taken the lazy route, sacrificing great authentic Chicago food, like Mr. Beef, for the convenience of walking 2 blocks. I am glad I decided to go all the way to The Weiner Circle to have their SENSATIONAL "Char Dog With The Works" and their hand-cut, seemingly double-fried DELICIOUS fries! And the $5.75 Special I had from Harold's Chicken Shack (also on 53rd St., near Nathans) was one of THE BEST experiences I had in Chicago: The food, and the staff and all the other customers at the Chicken Shack were just wonderful and a great "Welcome To Chicago!" I recently stopped in to Nathan's again this weekend and wanted to give my review an update! The alfredo is still top tier, so I highly highly highly recommend. It's made to order and the portion is generous. I love the containers they come in because they're reusable, as well. I didn't realize how much Nathan's offered until I saw their menu in person. Although the alfredo is my tried and true, I'd be interested in trying other things! Also, while I was waiting, the staff made conversation with me and was just super hospitable with everyone that walked through the door. He even closed the door because I said it was chilly outside! If you're going to charge for bbq sauce, the LEAST you can do is cover the fries with the sauce. I'm so glad I didn't pay extra for cheese and receive it close to cold. The char polish is regular size, not footling for $9 plus. Do yourself a favor and save your money. I have to admit, I'm a fan of all things consistent. I'm also a fan of things that know what they are and don't try to be more than that. This Nathan's, for example, isn't high end cuisine. It's casual dining to its core. I have not tried to eat the Jamaican cuisine, I stick to the grilled chicken pita sandwich with tomato, lettuce and onions, along with ranch dressing and fries. It won't win any awards for design, but when you need food and are in the area but don't want something heavy...I frequent this spot. People I know have had other of the American-ized dishes and have not complained. read more

This was my first and last time. I think they just have a menu of stuff and don't know how to really make them. They do not care if it looks delicious or not. I ordered a Philly cheesesteak and received this with barely any meat and was told "it's 4 ounces". Maybe Babas and other joints spoiled me because they always fill up the bun fool of meat and etc. The cashier was nice enough to charge me $3 something for every meat and add it to my sandwich. read more

I've ordered from Nathans a few times, had the Jerk Chicken a few times because Uncle Joes doesnt deliver. I also tried the Curried Chicken. The Curried Chicken was not that bad, The sauce needs a little work though. The Jerk Chicken on the other hand, lets start with one time I ordered it the chicken was over cooked I called them they replaced it but it took them 2 hours to do so. The second time i ordered a Half all white they sent me a half all dark, and the guy wanted to argue me up and down I ordered all dark (but my receipt said all white half to prove it). the jerk sauce tastes funny and bland. Ive been to plenty of jerk places before and even dated a caribean woman who jerked Chicken every weekend. So I dont know what this is they are calling jerk sauce and or Jerk Chicken they need to take it off the Menu because it sucks. Today I tried giving them a chance to redeem them selves, since I havent ordered from them since the summer of 2017. This place doesn't have a mission statement. Foods range from jerk chicken, burgers, hot dogs, gyros, etc. I only came here because I saw Jamaican on the front of their store. If ur gonna sell us on that then it must be damn good jerk chicken. I don't recommend it tho. I'd try something different on the menu but doesn't seem like a lot of people go here. The cashier and cook were Mexican n said there tamales were homemade. I ordered 4 tamales and 2 Chicago style hot dogs with cheese fries. Right after swiping my card for 28$ things went south. The microwave buttons were beeping n the door shut, I looked over n saw my tamales being nuked to hell. My hotdogs came out a bail with Cafeteria water in it and my hotdog bun was all pale and covered in flower so much I was choking on it. Pretty expansive menu, with a few hilarious specialty burgers (including the Hawaiian Burger with pineapple slices) -- I generally go for the Gyro, which they do well, but have also enjoyed their jerk chicken pita, the burgers, the burritos, the fries, and especially dig their Super Taco. Compared to its competition in the grab-and-go casual category (Wingers and Red Snapper) the quality is remarkable and consistent. I never leave this place without the homemade ginger beer. If you're the kind of person who's more interested in a greasy hole-in-the-wall place than a Michelin Star restaurant, you're in luck at Nathan's. The owner has always been courteous to me, but as a very small and busy operation they're sometimes just too busy. My #1 complaint: STAY OPEN LATER!!! You know that Seinfeld episode where Kramer tells Jerry he should return fruit that he doesn't like? And Jerry responds with something like, "No, that's where I draw the line. Fruit's not something I return." Well, I have the same policy about take-out food and, really, food at any restaurant. Tastes differ widely, the cook might have had an off day, and unless it's utterly inedible, I just figure out how to deal with it. I mean, I once got food poisoning at a place and I didn't even ask for my money back then. Today, I felt compelled to break my rule. I went to Nathan's, ordered the goat curry with red beans and rice as well as a beef patty. I was under a time crunch because I needed to be back at 3, and I was there at 2:20 or so. Gave my order, and was told it would take ten minutes. I'll be the first to say I did ask about the status of the order a couple of times, and the guy there was super sweet and assured me I would get it in time. A few minutes later, I hear the ping of an oven, and am given my order. I walk out happily and reach home in time. It's foul. The patty was nuked to flaccid yellow mess, no crustiness to speak of. The goat curry? Steaming hot, but mostly a pile of what I'm guessing is a premade curry sauce out of a bottle, and the meat was toughtoughtough. I try, I really try to eat a few spoonfuls but it's disgusting. Spicy, but disgusting. I do the unthinkable and call and tell him it was really bad. Before I can even ask about getting my money back, he snaps, "You were in a hurry!" I'm flabbergasted, but finally ask, "Okay, can you tell me how my not being in a hurry would have made this better?" It's goat curry. It's not as if they're able to make it from scratch in ten minutes. It's a fast food place. I'm okay with that. Uncle Joe's is the same way, but it's delicious. This, not so much. At all. He keeps trying to argue and I finally tell him I'll just yelp about it. To be clear, if he'd just said, fine, you hated it, bring it back for a refund or something else, I would have still yelped but said, hey, they were fair about it. And maybe the other items are better. But "You were in a hurry!" is a pretty shoddy excuse for a fast food place, you know? Now I have to figure out if this ghastly brown mess can be rescued or not. I suspect not. Eat here at your peril. Or maybe just skip the whole Jamaican menu. read more

I wanted some Caribbean food, so came here on a whim the other day. I was super confused by the menu over the counter, which advertised hot dogs, burgers, and gyros... aka no where near Caribbean. The actual Caribbean menu is tiny, and off to the right. I ordered the goat curry and my friend got the Jerk chicken. For a fast food place, this place wasn't that fast, and we were there for at least 10 minutes before our food came out. I was not a fan of my curry... there was plenty of goat in it, but it looked as it they had dropped thick brown mystery gop on it. My friend's jerk chicken was similar. For $10+, I can get a much better tasting meal elsewhere. Could not finish it, and neither of us felt like it would be worth it to bring back the leftovers (even though they were already packed in the default to-go bags). The interior of the place is pretty basic. There are only a few tall bar tables next to the windows to sit at (and the tables don't look like they're wiped down that often throughout the day). All in all, don't think I'll be coming back here, even though the other reviews seem to suggest it would be better for burgers. read more

Their fries are decent, so if you want cheap fries... there ya go. If you want a good neighborhood burger, go to Five Guys. If you want good neighborhood Jerk, go to Uncle Joe's. The Jerk Chicken was HORRIBLE. It was completely tasteless, dry, and the skin was rubbery. It looked old and I could also tell it had been frozen. How the heck do you make TASTELESS JERK?? You can't even call it jerk unless you prepare it with like a dozen spices! It was inedible, and the rice was just as tasteless. The plantain was undercooked. I ordered a slice of sweet potato pie, and when I tasted a small piece of it - I threw it out. It was (in keeping with the theme) TASTELESS. But the twist on that was the texture. It was gummy and pasty like flour or something had been added to the filling - YUCK. The only reason I even ordered from Nathan's was because Uncle Joe's doesn't deliver and I didn't feel like walking there in the bitter cold. That'll teach me to be lazy! DO NOT... I repeat... DO NOT order Jerk from this place EVER. Just go to Uncle Joe's and deal with the super long wait. At least you'll get a decent meal. read more

I am so disappointed- I hace been a fan of Nathan's since High School (over ten years) Tonight I called for a delivery order and the Guy was so rude to me. He yelled at me twice and when I asked him to stop raising his voicehe said no- do you still want your order. This is not the first time I have had problems order from this place. I have seen this place many times but never went into the place because it didn't seem like a place I would want to get food from. Mostly because I really couldn't see in that well and I didn't get the concept of Chicago Style and Taste of Jamaica. While reading a review for Wingers one of the reviewers were saying how expensive they were and how inexpensive Nathan's was and this week heck this year I am on a budget and I saw all the great reviews so I decided to give it a chance. The regular burger was only 3.49 and it was good it was not mind blowing but hey it was tasty for the price. My daughter got the Mexican Burger and she devoured that burger so fast as she raved at how great it was and it was only 4.99. Neither of our burgers came with fries or a drink but they did have combos. The fries were only a 1.59 and they were really good. Because of all the different types of food they make it had an odd kind of smell but our burgers looked and taste fresh. I can't believe I didn't take a picture of our burgers but next time I will because I will definitely be back when I am in the area. Enjoy! read more

Can I have a #24 please? Its the same dish I get all the time!!! What is it you ask? Grilled vegetables and grilled chicken on a bed of Spanish rice. Its fresh, healthy, and awesome. I have tried the jerk chicken and plantains before and they are good as well. If you want a fresh and green salad they have those as well. I'm 22 & i've been going to Nathan's since I was 10, despite the awful ass service I have always frequented it because of the chicken pita sandwich & the lemonade, but as of late, as i've grown older I can't deal with the rude assholes that make & serve the food & I haven't visited as much. As i've said i've been going here for years so I am a fan but they are just so rude for no reason, i don't know how they stay open. For example, I called a week ago around 9:45 to ask what time they close (which is at 11) & the guy who answered was so rude about finding out what time they closed and telling me. I ordered Nathan's while my 2-year-old was in Comer Children's Hospital, and they awesomely deliver to the hospital! The food was good, but the most awesome part was that I asked if I could get a few extra cucumbers on my hot dog since my little guy was asking for cucumbers but they were not on his hospital menu (they are his fave). Well, when I opened my bag to eat, I saw that the good folks at Nathan's sent over an entire tray of cucumber slices for my son! Sampling the "Jamaican" side, I'm impressed. The Jamaican dinners come in very large portions. $7-8.50 buys an enormous mass of meat, rice, and beans. I have a relatively large appetite, but could not finish the curry goat in one meal. I doubt anyone will confuse their grub for Rajun Cajun, but it's spicy, cheap, and massive. I tried something different for once and it reminded me why I stick to what I know chicken and veggies over rice sounded delightful it shoulda been called chicken rice and peppers there was like one piece of squash. It needed a sauce cause it kinda dry. The chicken could of been moister yeah a sauce would made it way better. The cabbage on the other hand was plain ole aweful it was so spicy it ruined my pallet had my entire mouth on fire I wanted to rinse all that bullshit off of it.
