Our food arrived without utensils, and my friend eventually had to get up and ask for them. The most concerning part was being given water cups brought over from another table that already had water in them--we honestly couldn't tell if they had been used by previous guests. Went for a brunch date with my friend and our teen girls to catch up and chat with them before they headed off to college. Our waiter was okay...nothing special, it was hard to flag him down. Cute walkable spot near McCormick. Arrives just after 11 am, perfect time for brunch. They have a happy hour that starts at 12:30pm and it gets busy! We sat at the bar and it's small with maybe 12 seats with 4 being on another bar facing a different direction. The bartenders were great and talkative. They were just making cocktails from the moment we sat down. It was a little hard to get their attention but eventually we got it. I ordered a latte and that didn't come out until I asked when my food arrived. The barista had forgotten me but it came out eventually and it was good! The food was delicious and full of flavor. We went here for breakfast while in town for a convention. I had the catfish and grits, the teen had the French toast, and husband had the Michigan Ave. breakfast. French toast was 'the best ever' from the teen. I enjoyed the catfish and grits but the edges of the catfish were thinner and overcooked and chewy. The sauce on top had great flavor and a lot of crawfish in it. Grits had good flavor too. The Michigan Ave breakfast was nothing special though as it was just normal breakfast food and seemed to have fell short a little. The coffee, mocha, and hot chocolate here were all awesome. Now I would've given this place five stars but I'll walk you through my reasons why. We hoped off the plane and went straight to this black owned business. Being from the south we love good food and I just knew this place would touch the spot. Upon arrival we were told our only seating options were outside or at the bar. With the bar being a little smaller in closed , we chose to sit outside for fresh air and it was such a beautiful day. While sitting outdoors we attracted all the bees, which could have due to them having flowers surrounding the patio but it was nothing we ever experienced down south. We did order outside the unlimited mimosas ($40pp) a cup of gumbo (which was asked to be my appetizer), and two catfish and grits. The drinks came out immediately and the gumbo as well. I won't lie y'all I damn near licked the bowl clean. The balance of flavor , the spice. It was perfect! While sitting outdoors my bestfriend received her fish and grits with a side of potatoes. Her fish and grits were fresh but the potatoes were cold. While eating between the fresh food and the flowers the bees found us, which freaked us out a bit. So we asked to move in doors. Which was accommodated and we ended up at the bar. While moving to the bar our waitress did say to us "well that's what happens when we sit out doors" ... maam maybe because of the city we are from and the government possibly killed all our bees, we don't have that issue when sitting outdoors , but anywho we go inside. We are sat at the bar where my food arrived more than 20 min after my bestie finished her food, which made her uncomfortable because now I feel rushed to eat since she's already done with her plate. I also noticed the other family sitting outside was accommodated indoors so I'm guessing the bees bothered everyone that morning. The staff at the bar were super friendly. Loved every last person. I was shortly notified that they are not allowed to help us because we are with another table. As I wrapped up my meal I decided to go to the restroom (super clean). When I came back my bestie notified me that we would have to leave because it was stated our 90 min was up. I pulled up the time stamp for arrival and we have at minimum 30 minutes left ( plus my food came out late so I've been timed when my food was delayed is insane to me) but no biggie because now I'm ready to go. Before leaving the young man at the bar (who wasn't supposed to help us) brought me a cake which was sweet. We got our bill from the waitress and we I asked her why my bill was $100 when i calculated $80 she gave me so many reasons for up the up charge. Now because I'm not from here I was not going to argue, I paid my bill and texted my receipt to myself and I also tipped. Come to find out the restaurant charges 20% gratuity for meals automatically although it's was just two of us. If I had known that I wouldn't have given an extra tip. My total was $106 after tip. Overall the place is beautiful interior, nice music and the food is amazing. I will say the customer service and the timelines of the food arrival should be approved. Brûlee was such a vibe. Everyone was so sweet and they definitely made us feel at home as we were visiting from out of state for our anniversary. We went on a Thursday for brunch. The restaurant wasn't crowded but I'd still suggest a reservation. The hostess and our server, Amber, oozed with hospitality and personality. We ordered catfish and grits and they happily subbed the sauce that comes with it for another sauce with no seafood because of our allergies. The dish was well seasoned and the grits were so creamy and delicious that they accommodated us and gave us another serving. We also ordered an avocado turkey sandwich on the softest bread. We were able to sub the fries for the delicious smokey collard greens. The sandwich was so big that I took half to go. We also got a cocktail called the Goddess that was picturesque, smokey, and STRONG along with a non alcoholic Dragon Splash they had popping boba. We lived the atmosphere, the service, and the food. I went as a recommendation from a friend who lives in the city. Let me start with the positives: The staff were wonderful! Everyone was polite and offered great customer service. It was quite busy and they were managing the capacity so well. We did not have a reservation but were able to be seated within 30 minutes. That was truly appreciated. The catfish was flaky and the crust was crispy. The things I did not quite like; I shared some gumbo and the French toast with my sister. The gumbo was very salty and did not have an authentic taste. I had the macaroni and cheese and it was not seasoned and looked as if the cheese wasn't baked through. The seating is very compact near the bar area, which did dampen the experience for us. One Star -- My First Ever There are better options nearby. That's the most important thing I can tell you about Brûlée. Ten minutes after walking out, my wife and I were seated at another nearby restaurant beginning what turned into a fantastic 5-star brunch. That review is coming. That will be my 23rd Yelp Brunch review. This one is harder to write. Slow service happens. People have bad days. In 246 yelp reviews. I rarely, ever gave a restaurant less than three stars. Brûlée earned my first one-star review. That's especially disappointing because I really wanted to like this place. I live in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, my experience went sideways before I made it through the front door. At the curb. I'm backing into an open, clearly marked city-metered parking space near the restaurant when a man comes toward my car, arms flailing, shouting that they use that space for valet parking. I rolled down my window because I wasn't sure what was happening. It looked like a city parking space. The sign said it was a city parking space. The city parking app certainly believed it was a city parking space, because it happily accepted my $7. The valet wanted $15. I couldn't understand how I was supposed to pay $15 to "valet" my car in a public metered space I still had to pay the city to occupy. And what happens when enforcement writes the ticket? I paid the meter, parked, and went inside. Inside, things looked promising. The restaurant was more than half empty, which made what followed even harder to understand. There appeared to be plenty of staff, and we were seated at a nice table. My wife and I decided to make a festive Fourth of July brunch of it. We ordered several dishes to share--fish and grits, breakfast potatoes, a strawberry and apple salad, signature waffles, and more. We specifically hoped the salad would come out first. Then things got bizarre. About five minutes after we ordered, a tall gentleman and his companion sat down across the aisle from us. Almost immediately, there was what I can only describe as a welcoming committee. A woman managing the floor warmly greeted him. Several other staff came out to say hello. Everyone seemed genuinely excited he was there. Maybe he was a local celebrity-- it's Chicago, you never know who is sitting at the next table. I have no idea who he was, and frankly, it doesn't matter. What happened next does. A server came out carrying a strawberry and apple salad, stood between our tables, and announced the dish. The gentleman indicated, essentially, "Yeah, over here." And onto his table it went. My wife and I looked at each other. That looked remarkably similar to the salad she had ordered. Then another dish came out. And another. At some point, it became clear that we were watching our entire Fourth of July brunch parade right past us and land on the table across the aisle. The salad we wanted first? Their table. The fish and grits? Their table. The potatoes? Their table. Dish after dish after dish. The gentleman and his companion had been seated only minutes earlier and, from what we observed, had not even had time to order. And still the food kept coming. One of the final items was the signature waffles. By then, so much food had been delivered to their table that the gentleman finally tapped out. No more room. They took them back. That was enough for me. By this point, I could see the woman managing the floor looking at the computer, pointing, and looking back toward our section. Maybe someone had finally figured out what happened. I got up, found our server, and calmly said: "It looks like you gave our entire order to the table next to us. Please just cash me out for what we've already received. We're leaving." Another gentleman asked if everything was all right. No. Everything was not all right. And no, I wasn't interested in getting into a shouting match across the dining room over plates of food. A restaurant should know which table ordered what. Here is what turned a bizarre service mistake into a one-star experience: no meaningful apology. No manager came to the table. No real explanation. No effort to recover the experience. Nothing. I've eaten in a lot of restaurants over a lot of years. I also work with restaurants professionally. I understand that kitchens get backed up and tickets get crossed. And maybe the food at Brûlée is delicious. I will never know. Because some people can cook. Running a restaurant is something else--an exercise in execution, where a lot has to happen to exacting standards. This wasn't a restaurant drowning in a brunch rush. The dining room appeared more than half empty and well staffed. This was also the first time in my life I have ever walked out of a restaurant because of the service. One star is the lowest rating available, and I can't justify anything higher. There are better options nearby. read more

I'm giving this place a 4.5 due to wait time extending 45 min past reservation booking. Street parking (metered) and Valet parking is an option. Free on Sundays. Beautiful inside of the restaurant with a comfortable waiting area. They have a 90 min table policy but I don't think they hold everyone to it. It took about 10 min for water to arrive to the table once seated. Upon our food arriving we had no silverware and they found two sets but it took a little longer to get two more sets. But they were crowded and busy busy in their defense. Our waiter Noel was exceptional and kind with a beautiful smile. When asked what he would recommend he stood on the business back and said "everything is good! He likes everything on the menu and has no favorites!" Now that's what I like to hear about a restaurants menu. I ordered gumbo for a starter and it was nice. Pretty good but it was warm in temp. Full of chicken and sausage with a nice traditional flavor. It's made daily per Noel's report. I ordered the fried catfish, candied yams, and greens. (I think the name was Virgil something). This fish was meaty and seasoned to the Gods. It was 2 fillets. I'm glad the candied yams weren't overly sweetened as I prefer baked Sweet potatoes over candied yams. The greens were very good with turkey meat. The perfect amount of food for myself. My friends all ordered catfish and grits. I tasted the grits since I had my own fish they were thick and delicious. They did not get looser as they cooled. My friend also ordered the brisket grilled cheese and tomato soup. That brisket was so tender and flavorful on that buttery Texas toast. The tomato soup was also good. We ordered the Mac n cheese but it never arrived so we canceled that. My friend ordered a honey biscuit that she had to take home because it to was delayed. She said it was delicious. I'm sure that Mac was gonna be good too. The drink menu looked tasty but we all settled for juice instead. Everything was worth the cost. The third star is because I value a locally black owned business and I hope they do succeed, but our visit was a miss. It was especially tough given the restaurant wasn't too busy when we arrived. We struggled during our breakfast. Five separate requests for the black coffee we ordered which was delivered after we asked someone not our server when our food was almost finished. The avocado croast was not served on a croissant and the egg we added was charged at double the price of what the menu said. They did fix this when asked. No inquiry to get the egg cooked the way we would have preferred so it came fried hard. The parfait we ordered because we hoped to enjoy some of the namesake bruleed bananas as it said in the menu, but just plain bananas came in the bowl. Hot tea came with a lime wedge? All the food was fine, but we felt the menu and what we received weren't really aligned. The last thing was the bill. Beyond the egg double priced, they added 5% service, 15% gratuity and 3% credit card fee. And the terminal to pay asks for another tip which we declined. The receipt says mandatory 20% tip so I assume that means the 5%+15%? *Later we realized they undercharged for the parfait so someone needs to match the menu and the register. We stopped by Brulee for a quick brunch while we were in the South Loop near the convention center. It's kind of hidden, but once you're inside, the place is super bright with lots of modern decor. We visited on a weekday morning, when it was about 50% full, consisting of seemingly coworker groups and smaller groups. The restaurant is bright and decorated beautifully with flowers adorned along the wall and ceiling. I with I could say that the food was good, but all I can give it was an "ok" rating. While the food was excellent, the rest of the experience was highly disappointing due to poor customer service and billing issues. When we brought this to the owner's attention, she was dismissive and defensive, claiming she could not control nature and acting as though this was the first she had heard of the issue. However, our server had already admitted to us that management was actively trying to find a solution, making the owner's lack of awareness contradictory and misleading. We understand that outdoor elements are unpredictable, but management has a responsibility to warn guests of known hazards before seating them. To add to the frustration, the drinks were mediocre. The most concerning part of our visit occurred during checkout. After requesting a copy of our receipt, we discovered a $74 overcharge. When we asked for a correction, the second receipt was still incorrect, showing a $10 overcharge. At no point did anyone apologize or acknowledge these significant billing errors. While the kitchen team is talented, the dismissive management and careless billing ensure we will not be returning. read more

They have a set brunch menu on Sundays which featured a lot of popular brunch items. I was decided on the shrimp and grits and I added a sweet potato waffle. I can't lie y'all it missed the mark for me. My grits were really hard and my shrimp appeared undercooked. Also, the waffle I received tasted like a regular waffle not a sweet potato one. My friend got chicken and waffles which she enjoyed and another friend ordered French toast and fried lobster which I found to be wayyy better then my meal so I would probably opt for that if I came back. Went to Brulee for Galentines Bruch. I was able to get a park very close to the restaurant. The staff were polite and attentive. Reservation was at 12:30 we were seated at about 12:40 wanted to give our party a little more time to arrive. The space is beautiful. Over all the service was good but time could use some work. We got our drinks and appetizers "quick fix" items quickly like 15-20 minutes of ordering. I ordered a strawberry lemon drop. I also ordered champagne asked for a flavor for it was told thats only used for cocktails. We had the croissant beignet, brussel sprouts, French toast and the Virgil with cat fish sides are sweet potatoes and collard greens. The brussel sprouts were perfect some of the best restaurant sprouts Ive had. The french toast was so good didn't need any syrup. The fish was fried well but I didnt like the hot honey hot sauce it was served with. The collard greens had a nice spice to them the turkey in them was tender. But I did not like the candied yams at all. They had too much nutmeg I feel like it was overkill. Overall, there is room for improvement. But I enjoyed my visit. The food was so good! These are the best beignets outside of New Orleans. The brisket taco was delicious, well seasoned and so tender. I went two days in a row, once for brunch and once for happy hour. Noel and JP were super welcoming and gave great recommendations. Everybody, from the hostess to the servers, has great hospitality and customer service. The inside is clean, and decor is tasteful. I highly recommend and will come again! read more

To start I absolutely recommend a reservation or you will for sure have a long wait. Seating arrangements could also be better. My friend and I were sat at this small table in the aisle between larger tables which left little space for patrons and servers to get around the restaurant. Alright, on to the positives, food 10/10!! We visited during restaurant week and got the three course for $45 deal and tried a special holiday themed drink. I would highly recommend their cocktails and food. Gumbo for the starter had crawfish, sausage, shrimp and the perfect roux and rice. My shrimp and gouda grits were savory and also really good. Then the croissant beignets to end, yum! would return for the food and drinks for sure but maybe book at a less popular time. read more

My friend took me here to celebrate my birthday yesterday and I had a great experience! It's a bright , beautiful spot. The service was great. The food was great as well. For appetizers we ordered the Brussels sprouts and chicken biscuits. I'm still thinking about those damn biscuits! They were so good! For entrees we had the shrimp and grits, omelette with a side of bacon and Brûlée French toast. Truly everything was delicious! The prices are reasonable too. I have to mention that parking might be challenging but do not let that deter your visit! I will definitely be returning! read more

Beautiful restaurant with good service. We visited for the restaurant week brunch special. We ordered the chicken biscuit and that biscuit was soft and delicious. The Brussels sprouts with a lemon cream and honey which was really good. The gumbo which was full of meat and the taste was good I just wish there was a little heat added to the dish. Chicken and waffle which came with a warm thick waffle and perfectly fried chicken. Fish and Grits with nice thick and creamy grits and the croissant beignets which were very good. The food was good and my bartender was nice. I ordered a cup of grits and the chicken and waffles. I was just really thrown off by an unprofessional moment. One of the workers was on FaceTime the whole entire time I was eating. I heard her entire conversation and I can see the person she was talking to and she had them on speaker. My husband and I came in to town for a couple days and really wanted to try this restaurant. With a little mishap with Resy cancelling our reservation last minute, the owner went above and beyond to correct the matter and accommodate us. Especially when the rain delayed us 45minutes past our original reservation. Now, on to the food and service. We were greeted immediately and sat promptly. Loved that. Very clean atmosphere and the music wasn't too loud to where we couldn't have conversation. Food was not only presented well but was equally good. Fish and grits was so good I finished it all. My husband loves sweet potatoes so the sweet potatoe waffle was an excellent choice. We were given complimentary drinks for the mishap with Resy which really wasn't expected since it wasn't her fault.
