One thing that I LOVEDDD about this place was the music. Playlist was second to none! I sang and ate and sang more and ate more. Food was really good and what I expect from a soul food joint. First visit to Chicago and was looking for good soul food. I will admit the food was delicious! However it was an extremely long wait. It is an extremely small place. I think if you only have 3-4 booths you should place some kind of limits on how long you can sit at a table so that you can accommodate more customers. When we arrived we were told 15-20 minutes. We waited about an hour. Then we were told that we should just sit at a table near the door (that was not clean by the way) because if not we may not even be served. At this point we are 30 minutes in. I was not interested in sitting in these high chair right by the waiting area. We were eventually seated. It was a booth that was basically made in half so you it is semi-private and you are dining with people who are not in your party. Enjoyed the meal, however was not expecting a 18% service charge for a party of 2. The long and short of it, is the food was great. But I don't think I will be returning here. While the wings were standard, the mac and cheese and cornbread didn't quite hit the mark. Mac wasnt giving baked mac. It just seemed like regular macaroni. Our waiter mentioned that since we arrived late, the dishes might not have been prepared as they typically would be. Overall, my friends and I agreed that the appetizers stole the show, and I'd definitely return just for those Lobster Deviled Eggs and Soul Roll! The drinks were great too. She headed straight to the bar to make them herself and when I tell you EVERY drink was strong, fresh, and flavorful... I loved it! My business partner then whispered, "You know she's the owner, right?" I said, "No way!" She was so kind, down-to-earth, and personable. When she came back, she said, "Let's start with some appetizers," and recommended her favorites. We went with the deviled eggs with lobster bites and the jerk chicken egg rolls and they did NOT disappoint. Every bite was fresh and delicious. For our entrees, she again highlighted the top sellers and her personal favorites. We ordered the blackened catfish and the stuffed salmon. My experience was disappointing from the moment we walked in. The hostess was unnecessarily rude and unwelcoming. Before allowing us to sit at the bar, she asked for our names and phone numbers without providing any explanation as to why that information was needed. To make matters worse, she then told us we needed to go outside and come back in because she claimed we smelled like cigarette smoke. There are professional and respectful ways to address concerns with guests, but the way this situation was handled felt rude, embarrassing, and completely inappropriate. Customer service starts at the front door, and unfortunately, this experience left a very negative first impression. I would expect much better treatment from a business that values its customers.
