100000/10 DON'T WALK...RUN! I was here for a birthday celebration and Virtue did not disappoint! That short rib with creamed spinach and crushed potatoes...NO NOTES! That was the best bite of the night, hands down! The sides were amazing as well! The mocktail was exceptional and sweet! The service was alright. However, the highlight of the night was the owner coming over to our table to chat with us briefly. He was so sweet and welcoming! Virtue gained a new loyal customer & cheerleader!
Make sure to book reservations even if it's for a solo happy hour! Had to wait an hour coming in Wed 4:20pm. Now, I'll preface this is a personal preference and for happy hour. I wanted to try a little more Cajun/Southern cooking so I ordered all the dishes on the HH menu - gumbo, fried buffalo mac and cheese bites, catfish sliders and chicken wings. One bite of the gumbo brought me to a memory of New Orleans's Commander's Palace. It's a strange feeling cause I wasn't thinking of it but that's the power of food. The mac and cheese bites were okay, not a huge fan of mac and cheese in general, but the pickled celery on the top, a nice sweet and sour crunch. I enjoyed the catfish sliders the most, typically a muddy tasting fish, but didn't really catch much of that. Lastly, the chicken wings, it comes with a biscuit, which is denser and quite savory than a typical butter biscuit. I was getting full at this point, the biscuit was very filling and thought it was okay to good. Noticed a few people at the bar ordering biscuits with pimento cheese, so a popular item. Chicken wings - 6 large pieces of both drummies and flats. I was quite surprised at how big they were, I thought the drummies were actually drumsticks! Comes with a rich hot sauce and flavored mostly with salt and pepper. Wanted the chicken to be a bit juicier... Overall, good execution, just not the flavors I go for. If southern cuisine is what you seek, this is a good option in Chicago.
My husband and I visited from Texas for the weekend, this place was on the top of my list of places I wanted to visit. We were NOT disappointed. The customer service was excellent, the food was top tier. Great portions and came out hot! I love that all of the entrées have sides, as many restaurants now days do not include sides. I will definitely be back when we are in town again.
Incredible food! It's quite busy, so definitely have a reservation. They're pretty attentive, it's a cute space, and the food is memorable. Fish and grit flavor was so tasty and unique. Short ribs cooked to perfection. Cornbread and Mac and cheese were delicious. Had leftovers to enjoy the next day! Kinda a miss, but the blueberry cobbler doesn't come with ice cream, which i 100% think is necessary. You'll have to ask for it (and they'll charge for it). Next time would try the banana pudding! Would come back!
I was excited to visit Virtue because it is a Michelin Star rated restaurant plus I love supporting Southern inspired cuisine. Although I was rooting for my experience to be stellar my experience at Virtue was disappointing. Lets start with what went well. The restaurant has dinner only hours so be mindful of that. We didn't have a reservation so we were seated at the bar. Our bartender was kind and kept her area spotless. Fist bump to her for having tweezers to hand me my straw for my cocktail an intricate detail that warmed my little germ averted heart! She took our order right away! We were off to a good start than things went downhill from there. I'm very mindful of criticizing service times but sad to say service was significantly slow! We ordered the biscuits and cornbread as appetizers; biscuits took 30 minutes to arrive. Cornbread was delivered with my entree which took another 45 minutes. My server was not communicative about the wait times, maybe if he was I would have had a different perspective. In terms of my dishes I found that the biscuits were too dense and the cornbread needed more sugar. I didn't like the pimento spread that came with them. I tried doctoring it up with the local honey that was offered by my server, to no avail. I enjoyed my entree, catfish was packed with flavor but a little on the spicy side. The spices are ok with me because of my southern roots but some may have found it to be too spicy. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed my brown rice, it was fluffy, moist, and flavorful. It was not bland at all! I enjoyed the smokiness of my grilled carrots! In summary, for a Michelin star rated establishment I expected more in terms of overall flavors and unfortunately service times and attentiveness were a miss here.
Another awesome visit. This time, my friends and I decided to order several entrées and extra sides so we could have a little tasting experience and try a variety of dishes. One person in our group has dairy restrictions, and the restaurant did a great job accommodating her. All of the dishes that included dairy was served deconstructed so she could enjoy the components that worked for her dietary needs without compromising the rest of the dishes. For our mains, we ordered the beef short ribs with creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, and gravy, along with the half chicken with baby squash and green beans. For our additional sides, we had the cornbread with honey butter, collard greens with smoked turkey, and creamy mac and cheese. Everything was good, and everyone enjoyed their meals. You can really taste that home-cooking influence in the food. The flavors are comforting and familiar, but you're still getting that elevated restaurant experience. The half chicken was the standout dish of the night. It was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Everyone at the table agreed that it was our favorite. Our least favorite was the short rib. It was tender and cooked well, but we all felt like it was missing something. We couldn't quite put our finger on what it needed. After looking at photos from other diners, I noticed the gravy was incorporated in the rib. That may have been the missing element that brought the short rib together and given it that extra layer of flavor we were looking for. Overall, another good experience. I look forward to returning to try a few more things from the menu.
It was Highly recommended for me to have dinner here while in Chicago and they did not disappoint. No reservation but I always get lucky rolling solo and got a seat at the bar. Dimly lit vibey setting. My server/ bartender was very kind and gave me good recommendations. They fried green tomatoes are a must get! So so good. The short rib were good but even better when I heated it up the next day! Maybe because I was full off the fried green tomatoes. But the next day it was so tender and melt in your mouth. Both cocktails I had were delicious and well balanced.
The vibe was pretty relaxed and felt like you're in a family member's home. Service was fine with good pacing and consistent water refills, but nothing memorable. 6/10. The Biscuits (6/10) were soft but pretty bland on their own. Spreading the pimento cheese on made it much more flavorful. The Gizzards (7/10) had a perfectly crispy exterior and chewy texture. The chewy rice and sauce underneath added more flavor and texture which I liked. The Short Ribs (9/10) were the best dish. The meat fell apart with a rich, savory sauce. The creamy spinach and mashed potatoes made each bite richer, while the crispy onions added a nice crunch. The onions were a little oily but still worked well. The Fish & Grits (7/10) had tender fish with buttery, nicely textured grits. The crab étouffée added a savory sauce that gave the dish much more depth. The Mac & Cheese (6.5/10) had a nice browned crust and creamy cheese underneath, but the pasta was softer than I like and needed more salt and pepper. The Cornbread (6/10) was very buttery and soft with little crust, but the sweet honey butter was the highlight. The Blueberry Cobbler (5/10) had a pastry topping and a warm, very sweet blueberry filling. Overall, as someone who grew up in the South, I wasn't particularly impressed. Everything was decent and alright for what it was, but nothing I'd really rave about except for the short ribs.
My bestie from Los Angeles is here!!! She wanted to go here for dinner and why not? I love Hyde Park! The restaurant is so beautiful and I felt like a hug when I came in! Warm, inviting and you feel at home! Very much soul and love here! We had amazing service, our waiters were attentive and gave great recommendations! The food was incredible! Can't wait to return!
THE HYPE IS REAL YALL!! The food was genuinely one of the best southern food I've ever had (coming from someone from the literal south). I had a 8:30pm reservation but they keep seating up until 9 when they closed; with a 15 min buffer. Everything had to be order all at once, including drinks and food. The dark interior is honestly very aesthetic and adds a moody vibe. I had the fish and grits, which was a HUGE portion, and the cornbread was insanely good as well. I was between that and the biscuits. I recommend the uncle honey as a drink because the flavors mix together so well! Also get the Millie's pudding (banana pudding) for dessert! Prices are also so reasonable for the portion size as well. Highly recommend going if you can get a reservation; which are sometimes hard to do. Will be back!
Enjoyed visiting Virtue. A friend told us they had a great meal when they went so it's been on my list since then. I was able to find street parking about a block away which was great!! I like the look of the restaurant starting off with drinks I really liked the bizzy Izzy it had bourbon, sherry, pineapple and lemon. The other drink was beautiful and had nice flavor too but I think maybe all the egg white foam was a bit much for me after a few sips. I love the combination of flavors in it rum pomegranate and lime. For a starter we had the honey butter cornbread it was delicious light and buttery with a perfect amount of sweetness. The green tomatoes with shrimp was delicious as well I only wish it was bigger it had a nice cornmeal coating on the tomatoes and a tasty light herby sauce on the shrimp great pairing!! The Mac and cheese had a nice thick crust and the inside was a super gooey saucy Mac and cheese. I enjoyed it my mom thought the crust was a bit too thick. I also really liked the blackened catfish it had a very light delicate soft texture. The seasoning was light as well but it works because it tastes so clean and it forms with an its own sauce and rice that reminded me of a risotto and barbecued carrots. I kinda wish I would have gotten the collard greens I heard they were good but was already getting full. I'd definitely go back and enjoyed the meal!! As soon as I knew I'd be in Chicago I made reservations for Virtue. We made it on time for our time slot and was promptly seated in their intimate dining room. I walked in the door knowing that I'd order the short ribs which were tender and flavorful! The mashed potatoes were smooth and buttery and the gravy added the perfect touch. The portion was enough to have some left over for breakfast the next morning. Definitely would repeat when I'm back in town.
Wow!! This place exceeded my expectations and was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Every single dish was perfectly seasoned, balanced and delicious. We started with the green tomatoes and gumbo. Both are so good! For main we got catfish, which was so tender and cooked perfectly, and the carrots that came with it were some of the best I've had. The collard greens and corn bread are stellar as well. Make sure you get the apple cider cake for dessert, you won't regret it. I will be coming back the next time I'm in Chicago!
I ascended. I was born and raised in South Carolina so I had high hopes and Virtue did NOT disappoint. We started with the biscuits and pimento cheese which I highly recommend. The biscuits were drop biscuits which is my preferred style (over flaky layers) but the pimento was a creamier texture than I usually like (I like a shred of cheese here and there). We also split the gumbo which skewed more red beans and rice, however, that's NOT a complaint I was in heaven especially with the large chunks of meat throughout. We split the short rib entree and didn't even need a knife to divvy out portions it was so incredibly tender. The mac and cheese side was godly and the collards were very flavorful--the turkey that came with it was also super tender. We ended the meal with very traditional banana pudding which I don't usually like but I was borderline cleaning the bowl. Please go here you can't order a bad thing, seriously. read more

Wow. What an experience. From the ambience + decor to the service to the food + drink, I enjoyed it all. I really hope that they open a restaurant in DC because I don't know if I can afford to fly out to Chicago every time I'm craving their food, haha. All of the food was well seasoned, cooked to perfection and had good portion sizes. I ate the gumbo, the fish + grits, the mac + cheese, collard greens w/ smokey turkey, and the cornbread w/ honey butter. Omg, omg, omggggg like my friend and I were in a food trance because it was SO good. It is rare to go to a restaurant where ALL of the food items that you try are good. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. If you're in the area please check out Virtue. I was also told Chef/Owner Erick also has other restaurants nearby. read more

My visit to virtue was so amazing. The entire visit was an experience. They were very intentional from check-in to sitting down to being seated to be created by the waiter, ordering food food being placed at the table, clean up the check, and when you were leaving, it was an overall amazing experience. The atmosphere is just a really beautiful restaurant, elegant sexy has a vibe. I can't wait to come back and I can't wait to tell a friend the food was awesome just so delicious. I had the blackened catfish with carrots and rice amazing and the gumbo which is delicious cornbread oh my God to die for with the collard greens with smoked turkey and we had the chicken which was just delicious. I could've done another bowl of the gumbo, but I didn't wanna be too greedy. They allowed me to celebrate my birthday and they gave me an amazing card signed by staff and that's when I'm talking about intention drinks were delicious. read more

Greeted by two lovely hostesses, the music inside was vibing which prepared me for a lively experience. The restaurant is decorated with beautiful works of art. For the meal we shared the flounder, which was sautéed and served on a bed of sweet corn. Excellent! Although the flounder was a generous serving size, it was so yummy, we wished we had not shared it. For sides we had the macaroni and cheese and the greens. Both were excellent. The sides are sharable sized. The service was great. We were greeted almost immediately by our server who was knowledgeable about the menu. After ordering, our food came out in about 15 minutes! Our entire experience was wonderful! Note that the atmosphere is lively, think large family gathering noise level. So if you are looking for a quiet intimate dining experience, be the first family member to arrive for dinner so that things are quieter. I have seen so many great reviews about Virtue, so I had to come check it out myself! I arrived without a reservation and it was an hour wait for the bar. I came back and was immediately greeted and given an intro about the menu, which was very helpful. I went with the fried green tomatoes and short rib. The tomatoes weren't my favorite but the shrimp and remoulade was good. The short rib was the star of the show! The meat was tender and seasoned. The potatoes, gravy, and spinach were a perfect complement! The bartenders were very kind and helpful even though it was busy! read more

What a treat! This restaurant deserves all of the hype and then some. I felt lucky to get in on a Saturday evening because virtue is always busy. Upon entering I couldn't help but acknowledge how stunning the restaurant is. I love the attention to detail especially regarding the art. To avoid waiting my friend and I sat at the bar. Our bartender Henry was extremely kind and helpful going over the menu. We started off with drinks. I don't recall my drink but it was really good. We chose the friend green tomato's. These were delicious the shrimp was a nice touch and I'd order them again. For entrees we got the short rib, blackened fish, greens and Mac and cheese. The short rib was so tender and flavorful it's served with creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. Ugh my mouth is watering thinking about it. The greens so good I added vinegar but they didn't need them. The star was for sure the Mac and cheese my goodness super rich and creamy. My friend really enjoyed her dish she cleaned her plate. The short rib was everything you hope for--fork-tender, incredibly flavorful, and served atop a bed of creamy spinach and garlic mashed potatoes, all finished with a rich, savory gravy. We started with the fried green tomatoes topped with a shrimp roulade, and from that first bite, we knew we were in for a wonderful dining experience. The Tilefish was fried perfectly. The service was impeccable. I don't think I've ever had my water poured with such elegance--it felt like I was being served a fine glass of champagne. The Uncle Honey was delectable. A well balanced elixir that Leone floaty and aligned with the flow of the evening. From the hostess to the server, every member of the staff was a true professional, delivering top-tier hospitality from beginning to end. The key lime pie was the perfect ending to an outstanding meal. And the music? Absolutely flawless. The playlist flowed seamlessly from one great song to the next, creating an atmosphere that had me wanting to sing along and celebrate the entire time. This place is outstanding! First time here but won't be my last. This black owned gem is in the heart of Hyde park and it is absolutely top die for. I finally made it back to Virtue with my best friends, and it still does not disappoint. The food was incredible...everything was on point. We sat on the opposite side of the restaurant this time and had an amazing experience. Our server was funny, attentive, and checked on us often. He even helped me remember song lyrics while we were joking around, which made the night even more fun. The ambiance is dark, rich, and sultry...definitely a place to dress up for. Expect to spend around $100-$150 per person, depending on what you order and if you get drinks, but it's absolutely worth it. Virtue is that perfect spot for great food and even better vibes. I've been here for a date and now with friends, and both times were flawless. You can tell they truly care about your experience. We tried several dishes, laughed all night, and had an unforgettable time. I can't wait to go back. read more

Still an amazing meal and got to meet Chef Damarr! Shout out to Henry for great service and the crowd and vibe was nice for a Friday date night. The gumbo is hands down my fave thing on the menu - I think about this gumbo all the time. But everything else we had was top notch too. - gumbo - I ate the whole thing myself and didn't split it - short ribs - a repeat that I love. Meat is SO tender and the grits are amazing - scallops - almost sold out that night and we can understand why - corn bread and honey - addictive - Mac n cheese - really rich and creamy - banana pudding - almost had no room for dessert but this is a favorite Drinks were solid and chef told us about the new bar they opened several months ago. We had such a great experience here! The food was absolutely delicious and the service was just as impressive. Everything came out hot, fresh, and full of flavor. We ordered the gumbo, gizzards, and beef short rib -- and honestly, every dish was a hit. The gumbo was rich and perfectly seasoned, the gizzards were crispy and tender, and the beef short rib just fell apart with every bite. You can really tell the food is made with care. I am dairy-free and they were able to accommodate that without sacrificing any flavor or quality. Our server was friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. If I was going to the electric chair-I want food from Virtue before I go. I haven't had a meal this delicious-every bite-in a very long time and we go out a lot. While I adore all the Asian fusion places I've gone, like Sunda and Mister Tiger, this meal had such depth of flavor. Our server was fantastic and we had a wonderful time! Everyone should try it-make a reservation tho because there's often a long line of walk-ins. read more

I absolutely will be back to Virtue. The short ribs were so tender you can cut it with a fork. Literally, everything I had drinks included (Uncle Honey & Peach Tree Fizz) was good. My Mom was going nuts about how good the fried green tomatoes are. The greens tasted like my Granny made them in the back. Yes, it might be pricey..but treat yourself cause it's sooo worth it!! read more

Read a lot about this place before coming to Chicago, so had to try it out! Food - 4.5/5 Cornbread - 4/5 - This was really good and the butter was so tasty, however, I think there's a bit too much. It would be better with maybe like a tablespoon or two of butter, in my opinion. Mac and Cheese - 4/5 - it was really tasty, but tooooo rich - you honestly can't eat more than one or two bites of this. The first few are great and then you really feel it. Beef Short Rib - 4.5/5 - the best beef short rib I've ever had. This was so tasty, and had the perfect texture... I enjoyed every bite. Service - 5/5 - Everyone was friendly and helpful, really appreciate the good service. Ambiance - 5/5 - Nice lighting, good character and feel.. perfect for a date or a night out. This place is well loved and there's a reason why. Servers were hugging their regulars, and it was such a homey environment. Reminded me of my favorite restaurants in Harlem. Owner and team takes it beyond just food - you're here for an experience. Started with the drinks which were so fresh and managed to be sweet without being too sweet. Ordered everything at once so they created the ordering of items. It was the last of the summer menu so we tried the sunchokes salad (5 parts of the sunflower), which was laid over yogurt and herbs- so fresh! Also got the biscuits to start and man, I would eat these everyday if I could (shout out to the pastry chef). Maine were short rib (so tender) and fish & grits (bursting with flavor, blackened was a hint of heat but nothing too crazy). I need this fish & grits when it's 10 degrees out because I felt HEALED. Mac n cheese on the side was fire, with at least 5 different cheeses im assuming. Ordered the 7up cake with blueberries and ice cream and it was so light and airy, my favorite kind of cake! I made a reservation to celebrate my friend's birthday and we were very much looking forward to dining here. We were all coming from out of town and had heard great things. The ambiance when we walked in was relaxed elegance. It was a beautiful open dining room with large windows and stunning artwork all around. We arrived right on time for our reservation and had to wait a little bit to get seated as the host stand was pretty busy. Once we were seated, we were greeted by our server and given suggestions from the menu. We ordered a number of dishes off the menu including the blackened catfish, the half roasted chicken, the salmon, the gem lettuce, the collard greens, the Mac and cheese and the cornbread. Everyone enjoyed the food with the standouts being the salmon, the blackened catfish, the gem lettuce and the chicken. The sides were ok with the standout side being the cornbread. Our server was great, but towards the end of the night is when things started to go sideways. My friend had ordered another drink and we were also paying for the check when her drink arrived, as we were feeling rushed to vacate the table given the time limit imposed. We paid the check and my friend went to ask the host if she could finish her drink at the bar. The host gave her a bit of attitude but when my friend explained she just would stand by the bar and not sit down, that seemed ok. My friend quickly finished her drink as she felt quite uncomfortable given the exchange with the host. The fact that we felt extremely rushed towards the end of our meal and the exchange with the host left a bad taste in our mouths. The food was really good, but I don't know that I would return the next time I'm in Chicago. read more

I was super excited to try this place because of the segment on "Somebody Feed Phil" and man was it worth the hype. Virtue is a warm and inviting gem in Hyde Park close to campus. Service was outstanding and it feels homey inside. Everything we tried at was absolutely delicious. The mac and cheese, cornbread, and collard greens especially stood out--each dish was packed with flavor and perfectly cooked. You can really taste the care that goes into the food. Had a dinner reservation for 5:30 pm, it was already quite busy at the time and only got busier into the evening. We got the gumbo, short rib, Mac and cheese, and collard greens. Everything came out in a timely manner, and the service was very nice. The food was all delicious - the gumbo had a kick to it and was very flavorful. The short rib was cooked very well and super tender. The Mac and cheese was so cheesy and the baked crust on top was so rich but delicious! The collared greens were good as well, but we were already so full and could only eat a bit of it. I've been wanting to try this place for several years. The dish that was really luring me in was the Carrot Cake. I've seen every season of Top Chef and this Carrot Cake won Chef Demarr Brown a challenge. It was pretty spectacular. My only complaint was give me a bigger portion and some more of that carrot caramel sauce. Also had the gumbo which was also delicious. Virtue is exactly who yall said it was. Excellent food, wonderful service, and mature vibes, overall great experience. We started with the gizzards over rice and a sauce that was both sweet and savory. For our mains we went with the short rib which was so moist, the potatoes were real potatoes that were creamy and well seasoned, there was also spinach and that was also well seasoned. The chicken dish had just the right amount of heat and I enjoyed the sweet potatos that accompanied that dish. That macaroni was out of this World delicious it was just the right amount of cheese with a baked top. The greens were good as well. We ended dinner with a great tasting banana pudding. Virtue was nothing short of an amazing dining experience. Located in Hyde park they take soul food to another level with a fantastic menu. They rotate their menu based on the season and what's available. So depending on the time of the year you may get a different menu. A very popular spot I highly recommend reservations you may be able to get a spot at the bar if it is just you. The food and service was fantastic and I really loved everything I had. From the start with the appetizers the fried green tomatoes and gumbo. My entree with the short rib, cornbread, Mac and cheese. Everything had great flavor and have great portion sizes to share.
