I met friends here for lunch on a Tuesday. The food is okay, but not great. This is a good, fast and inexpensive restaurant perfect for a fast lunch with counter service. I ordered half a chicken with mashed potatoes and did not leave hungry. However, the grilled chicken is somewhat dry and in need of barbecue or some other seasoning. A little cup of Barbecue sauce comes with the meal if you request it, but there should be more seasoning and/or some sauce to address the dryness of the chicken. I suspect that the issue may be that the cooks pre cook the chicken and leave it on the grill to keep it warm. The mashed potato side was bland and needed some salt. Holy smokes! This is my new favorite lunch spot (as if I ever had one). It was nearly 0 degrees out and I dragged my lunch mate on a 15-minute walk for some grilled chicken. I was definitely expecting more from this chicken place. I work in the loop and my co-workers are always talking about how great it is so I decided to go by for lunch. Their chicken was significantly lacking flavor despite appearing as if it were well seasoned. It didn't taste very fresh, like it could have been leftovers from the other day. The only thing that somewhat made it better was large quantities of their hot sauce that they have. Similarly, their mashed potatoes left a lot to be desired. They were very chunky, and solidified very quickly, and were quite bland. Overall, I wouldn't say my experience was that great. They messed up my 1/4 chicken order once and corrected it by upgrading me expeditiously ... so basically I had lunch for two days :-) The chicken is very well flavored, smoky charred almost, and juicy but if you want an extra kick, grab some of the green sauce. Girlfriend ordered the chicken roll. It comes with lots of vegetables with plenty of chicken wrapped in a freshly made pita bread. I ordered the half chicken with mashed potatoes and that comes with 2 pieces of pita bread. I had the chicken with a sweet sauce, which made it delicious. It was a bit dry without it. I love this place so much. I came across it because there was an amazing smell coming from my work break room. I asked my coworker what he was eating and he told me it was Chicken Planet. He told me the pricing is very reasonable as well and that it is his favorite place. I kept it in mind for months but never went because I assumed it was far from my office. One day I was wanting to take a walk so I thought I might as well walk to Chicken Planet and check it out. Turns out, the place is basically across the street from my work! It's a very humble shop with a few places to sit and menu boards. The man working the register, whom I assume is the owner, was SO nice. He was telling me their salsa is very spicy and I told him I drink hot sauce so he gave me an extra one for free! Their salsa...TO DIE FOR. I love it so much you don't understand. I could eat it EVERY DAY, but alas, I am rarely in the office. You can bet though, when I'm downtown and in the office, this is my GO-TO lunch spot! It's tough to find the words to describe how much I love Chicken Planet. The aroma of fresh grilled chicken, the line of eager customers, and the sticker price shock on how affordable the meal is. So when I reconnected with the new location (after being a huge of the Jackson location when I was a young, broke college student) I prayed that everything would remain the same. Thank goodness they did. The menu is limited basically to their namesake. I usually get half a dark chicken with a side of mashed potatoes and pita while washing it down with a soda... all for around $6.00. Grilled Chicken - The chicken is taken straight off the grill, into the box, and straight into my mouth. The crispy brown roasted skin, the juicy tender meat, all topped with a tangy flavorful house made salsa (if you're not dousing or dipping your chicken in salsa, you're doing it wrong). Just typing that made me want to go out and grab a bite. It is not overly seasoned, you can definitely still taste the chicken even after the grilling and the spices. I've gotten white and dark meat and although I prefer the dark meat, I still found the white meat juicy, flavorful, and tender. The sides (potato salad, mashed potatoes, corn, rice) are nothing to write home about. I've pretty much settled on just getting mashed potatoes every time because textures go well with the delicious chicken. But I would say, it's not really a traditional mashed potato, but more of a potato puree with chicken gravy (which is delicious). You can try them all, none of them really wow me. I've had the lemon chicken soup before and it was awesome. I had a cold that day and it cleared it right up (or maybe psychologically made me feel better). I would recommend it if you're starting to feel under the weather (and don't wanna make it yourself). Overall, I just love this place. The owner and his staff are always really nice, even with a crazy line or a completely empty restaurant. While you can eat it with the BBQ sauce, I think you have to at least try using the salsa while eating this meal. It is incredibly affordable (especially for Loop prices), they deliver, and the food is good even after you bring it home. I've been coming to this place for five years and I feel like I'm getting away with a murder every time. Half a charbroiled chicken, their homemade salsa, a side dish, thick pita bread, and a drink for nine bucks. It is one of the greatest lunch values ever and it's even more amazing considering it's in the loop. The chicken is well seasoned and always cooked perfectly. I've never had it underdone or overdone. They have their BBQ sauce and green salsa, but go with the salsa. It reminds me of a mixture between tomatillo salsa with a little Jamaican jerk influence. It works absolutely perfectly with the chicken. I even pour the salsa on the bread or mix it in with the rice. But sometimes, I'll do mashed potatoes and gravy and they're always very smooth.
