Recently grabbed Big City Chicken at Navy Pier with a friend, and overall it was just okay. For about $26, I got a chicken sandwich, lemonade, and waffle fries, which felt pretty steep for what you get. The chicken sandwich itself was pretty disappointing not much flavor and definitely not worth the price. My friend said "he'd prefer McDonald's chicken over it". The only reason this isn't a one-star review is because the waffle fries and lemonade were actually really good. But when the sides are the highlight, that kind of says it all. For nearly $30, I'd rather go to a sit-down spot on the pier and get more value for my money. Probably wouldn't come back here again. read more

The worst airport food. The buffalo chicken sandwich was dry meat, non crispy breading, a tiny squirt of hot sauce that added almost no moisture or flavor, mainly just dry bread, no blue cheese or any other topping other than the 1.5 tiny pickle chips. It was so low quality, just the dryest low flavor nonsense I have had in an airport. Boooooooo! Almost 20 bucks for that abomination. To be honest, my family wanted to try this because we were very hungry, but we ended up waiting a while for our food. We followed up on it only to be told that they were calling our name and we weren't doing anything about it. We were right in front of the counter, patiently waiting for our order to be called and it felt like they were accusing us for not listening or hearing them and just letting time go by. So we were understandably upset, but it felt like they were just blaming us. We asked for a refund and they gave it to us, but I didn't like the worker's and manager's attitude about the whole situation. Couldn't rate the food, service was pretty horrendous, and ambiance is equivalent to that of a cafeteria. Don't expect any good service if you come to this specific location. read more

I never order chicken strips for myself, but that's all the kid wants. So i find myself sampling chicken strips every now and then. These are some of the better chicken strips I've had. Do get them they are fresh crispy and surprisingly moist. It took a while to get them, but like they say... good things come to those who wait. I would rate it lower if it was possible. The chicken was lukewarm the fries were not hot and they were flaccid. The strips were a bit short and small but they came with fries which were pretty good. They have a good juicy taste and the batter breading had a good crunchy seasoned taste. They seemed pretty fast, but be mindful when in the summer (which is when i went) as sit down tables are communal and it gets busy around lunch time(s). Not too shabby, and certainly a tight menu featuring some decent price points for their offerings - especially considering their location in the middle of tourist-rich Navy Pier. Big City's Plain Crispy or Crispy BBQ sandwiches are $5.99. A 2-piece box of original or spicy chicken is $5.49, 3-pieces are $8.49 and an 8-piece comes it at $22.95. (Please note the prices on their current website are several dollars less than those posted at Navy Pier - so plan accordingly). Sadly, their much-ballyhooed "Hot & Spicy Chicken" sandwich, $6.49, falls woefully short on heat and crispness. While the large, unseasoned chicken breast had a slightly salty crust, the only heat and spice comes from the nuclear-colored red hot sauce that was slathered on top. If I had to guess, I would say the sauce was a 80/20 mix of Frank's Red Hot Sauce and plain Tabasco. Unfortunately, it's the massive dollop of blue cheese mayo that completely masks any spice or heat meant to highlight the meat. Hat's off to the crew for their super soft white bun selection - perfectly steamed and hefty enough to sop up some of that extra sauce and mayo. The lone slice of hamburger dill pickle on the bottom of the breast were pretty much an afterthought. Also, adding cheese to any sandwich was not an option - bummer. Plan an additional $3.99 to make any entree a combo, which includes a tray of nicely-fried shoestring fries and a 16-ounce fountain drink. The $4.99 Root Beer float was 16-ounces as well, but was heavy of pop, but super light on ice cream. If you wander off Navy Pier still hungry and you're still jones'ing for a truly spicy chicken sandwich, head to Do-rite Donuts & Chicken shop directly west on 233 E. Erie St. If you ask nice, they'll even put your amazingly flavorful and spicy chicken breast on a perfectly glazed donut. read more

I was recently at the SOFA Showing at the Navy Pier and I had read an article regarding this newer restaurant so I thought I'd try it. I have eaten at Frankie's Pizza and Big Bowl Express so I knew Big City Chicken would be just as good. After reviewing the menu, which I found to be very easy to understand. There are several types/sizes of order you can choose from. Matt, General Manager, very personable, had took my order - 3 piece meal with fries. Matt had advised me the order will ready in 10 minutes. Each meal is cooked to order - this eliminates any dried out pieces. Within the time frame, my meal was up. OMG - the chicken was done to perfection with crispy skin and the meat was very juicy - not dried out. I couldn't eat the skin fast enough, it was just so good. The fries were seasoned just right. After eating the three pieces and fries, I was completely full. I would highly recommend this restaurant and looking forward to my next visit. read more

Big City Chicken is a Lettuce Entertain You option at Navy Pier. The menu has a Lettuce Entertain You vibe but other than that you won't have a typical Lettuce Entertain You experience. The food isn't bad and orders come out quick, although our fries were served warm which was surprising. Given how busy the place was I'd expect that each batch of fries gets served before even having a chance to cool down. The customer service experience is lacking at Big City Chicken. On our most recent visit my boyfriend wanted to collect his LettuceEats points for our purchase. The cashier's initial response was that they don't do that there. When my boyfriend questioned the odd response the cashier went to speak to another staff member who helped the cashier but also used my boyfriend's LettuceEats points to pay for our meal instead of adding points to his account. The next disappointing interaction was when we went to get our drinks. We ordered a large Diet Coke with no ice and a regular size Diet Coke with ice. The first drink given to us was a regular size drink with no ice. We tried to explain that wasn't what we ordered but apparently the ladies knew better then we did. We ended up walking away from the counter with large and regular size drinks, both with no ice because at that point we were tired of dealing with employees who are so busy doing their job they don't have time for customer service. Absolute worst service I've ever experienced. Staff screaming at patrons "don't order fountain drinks" after they've already placed their orders at kiosks instead of placing a sign marking it out of stock. Then informing patrons they're out of ranch once orders already been placed. (Not replacing and charging you anyways theft) When I approached the staff member and told her to place size because yelling no fountain drinks every 3-5 minutes doesn't work for people who already ordered. She became hostile and said that is why they were screaming it, then repeatedly told me to go somewhere else. When I had already ordered. Eventually manager walks in, during the middle of exchange I ask him if he's the manager to which he says he is, I explain the situation and he simply walks away. Doesn't even respond. At this point I needed to walk away the order was then thrown at my wife and no alternates were given for the missing items. There was a kiosk option to order, but the kiosk lacked any options to customize the order (removing items from a sandwich). Don't be discouraged by what you might have heard about the lackluster options at this tourist trap or the subpar Big Bowl Express next door; Big City Chicken is an food oasis at Navy Pier! Food: We ordered the the spicy fried chicken, crispy BBQ chicken sandwich, fries and Sriracha mayo dipping sauce. The spicy fried chicken had a spicy powder that gives it a nice kick. Both chicken options came out hot and crispy as if they had just come out of the fryer and were delicious. The fries were crispy outside and fluffy inside and are "super-sized" according to my girlfriend. Perfect for sharing with another person or hogging to yourself if you really like potatoes. The Sriracha mayo dipping sauce was great on our spicy fried chicken but also went well with the crispy BBQ chicken sandwich and fries. Service: Service was excellent and quick. The only thing I would change is to add a ketchup pump so you don't have to ask someone behind the counter for those tiny single serving packets of ketchup. At Navy Pier with my son and he is hungry. I typically try to stay away from touristy spots but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. There are several food spots in a row. I guess they all have the same owner because after waiting quite awhile at the chicken register we were told to go down to the pizza and order there. It was a bit confusing and now we had to go wait in the pizza line. We got the 5 piece strips with a sweet tea. Food took a bit to come out but when it did it was hot and fresh. Good cuts of chicken are used, and the breading is not so thick that it overpowers the flavor of the meat. The fries were good too, but the star of the show is the chicken tenders. I got the 5 piece tenders meal, once I bit into a tender it was cold & dry, so dry that I couldn't even finish the tender and had to spit it out. I then ordered the cheese fries to see if that would any better but the cheese tasted like it was from a Kraft Mac & cheese box.
