I didn't know what this place was but damn am I glad I tried! It seems like a fast food restaurant but it was so fresh. You can just see the steam from the beans and the tortillas I ordered. Meal comes with a variety of sides to choose from and then a bun/tortillas. Also for the price? Really good! The chicken piece was large, and the breading was nice and crunchy. I got the rice as my side. The rice wasn't anything fancy; it did have corn! My side of yucca fries was a little on the stale side, making me wonder if they were not cooked to order. Flavor was there, but just didn't seem fresh. They have a great selection of beverages and the iced horchata was wonderfully creamy with cinnamon notes. They forgot our order completely and served 4 other customers before us so we demanded a refund. I have heard a lot about this chicken place and I was exited that a location opened on Chicago Ave. in the Gold Coast. My experience here was was uneven to say the say the least. In would rate my experience between a 3 and a 4. Because Yelp does not allow for 1/2 starts, I was forced to choose give it three stars. The food was very good. I went with my wife. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich meal with yuca fries. My wife ordered the two piece fired chicken meal with a tortilla. I liked my chicken sandwich. It was juicy and the the breading was crispy. The only problem was that it wasn't that spicy. I believe the only spice came from the sauce on the sandwich, and that there was no spice in the batter. I was expecting something very spicy, but if I had not known it was the spicy version, I would have thought it was the regular version. The yuca fries were good, but they only gave me a total of six. The chicken in the two piece fried chicken meal was delicious. The chicken was very juicy and the batter was crispy. In all, the food was good. The service was also fast. We received out food quickly after ordering. Moreover, the total price was around $20.00 after tax. Given the location and other options in the immediate area, I felt this was a food value. However there were some issues. First, all of the unoccupied booths were either dirty or not cleared. We sant down at a dirty booth, and had to ask for our table to cleaned. The staff member did not clean the table, but merely brushed the crumbs and food bits on the ground. Also, the trays of bones and garbage remained unclear on the other booths for most of our meal. Also, the restaurant was very cold. For context, I visited in December on day in the mid 30s. The restaurant was a bit chaotic. People waiting for their orders were wandering around the restaurant making it hard to get to seat. I wish the restaurant would have been more clear where they should wait for their orders. Finally, on the day and time I visited they had run out of french fries. I ate there at 2:00 pm ok a Saturday. I would have expected they would still have what amounts to a staple at lunch time. I ordered the nuggets, fries, mashed potatoes and rice. It all came out within very reasonable time considering the nuggets tasted made to order and not prepackaged. it was a great clean taste with well cooked chicken surrounded by a breading that had a good overall taste. Is the food delicious, I think so. Have I had issues with service yes but keep in mind they offer good service if you order or eat there. The first time I went was the second day they were open, they ran out of grilled chicken, but were nice and gave me a free flan. So I was like okay, that's cool. The second time I used the app, and service was not great if you ordered online. I was told to wait in an area. I saw customers come in and order, get seated, and be served immediately. So, if you are someone on a time crunch because it's your lunch hour for work stop yourself from using the app. Although there are rewards and coupons, I will have to forgo that and just order there to get served in a timely fashion. Additionally, I picked up lunch for a coworker, and if you have a customer with two drinks and a big brown bag with no handle, there should be access to cup holders or offer one up to the customer. I tried the grilled chicken and it has many spices on it, I have tried better grilled chicken from other restaurants. The coleslaw is very thick and the taste of it was not good at all. They took our order quickly but they took their time to have it ready. The horchata drink is good. Some of the tables were dirty. The place is a little small so it was crowded easily. Love this place. It was my go to fast food option for plantains and grilled chicken in Albany Park. So glad it's closer to me now downtown. I grew up in Florida so this chain is very similar to Pollo Tropical for any of you who are familiar. The baked/grilled chicken is seasoned to perfection with enough salt to serve as a warning that you shouldn't be eating it too often,lol. The fried chicken is still juicy with a very light breading/batter, and the fries are Golden Arches adjacent :). The plantains are sweet and definitely hit the spot, but they seem to fry them a smidge to hot for my liking, so I just eat around the burnt bits. Finally the staff. They are so friendly at this new location, so helpful, bilingual and welcoming. I really hope that remains the same. Prices have definitely risen since my Albany Park days, but if you're looking for flavorful baked/grilled chicken options beyond Nando's, you should definitely give Pollo Campero a try! read more
