I was in Chicago and had to try wings the way Chicagoans do it. I ordered the wings with salt, pepper and mild sauce and fries. Also got strawberry lemonade on the side. I decided to take my food to go because all the tables in the dining room were dirty. It seemed like most of the guests were ordering take out. Customer service was on point and the food was fresh and neatly packaged. The wings were fried to perfection and the sauce elevated the flavor. The fries were good too. The juice complimented the meal so well. I just wish the bread was packaged separately. I didn't like that the mild sauce was on the bread. But that's a matter of preference. We are just moved to Chicago so of course: Harold's Chicken. We needed something greasy to soak up an early happy hour so we headed over to Harold's #36. The store is straight to the point and unassuming, reminding me a lot of where are the best food is back home in Louisiana. The ordered one $10 wing special and one $10 dark special, the young lady let us know ahead of taking our order that it would be a 30 minute wait and for fresh hot chicken we did not mind one bit. See usually I have pictures as of the actual food. But as my wife and I stood (yes stood) in our kitchen speechless at how hot, fresh, and delicious this chicken was by time I realized I did not take pictures of the chicken it was: GONE. And yes we did get the mild sauce but it was too sweet for our taste. The young lady threw a Hot sauce in our bag and we liked that better. Yea, we tried Harold's YES it's that good. read more

I went here on Dec. 28, 2023, and got incredibly bad service. First of all, the clerk, who, according to the receipt, is named RIAH, has absolutely no business as a customer-facing employee. She acted ENORMOUSLY put upon by me approaching the register to order something. I guess she thinks Harold's should just open and operate with no customers, so her job can be to just stand around looking at her phone. She barked at me if I was picking up or needed to order but it was borderline unintelligible. Once I took a second to understand what she was asking I asked for a half mixed with hot on the side. She started punching away at the register and I noticed it said mild sauce and I said, "No hot," and she said, "You said mild." There's absolutely no way I said mild; I've been ordering this same thing at Harold's for decades. Nevertheless I was able to pay and she said it'd take 20 to 25 minutes. I left and came back a half-hour later. Upon seeing me re-enter, RIAH went over and told the kitchen staff about my order. I added up pretty quickly that she hadn't put my order in, but she didn't tell me that or acknowledge me at all. An older male staff member said aloud, "Yours is gonna be another 15 minutes," not making eye contact with me, looking in my direction or anything. I had to guess that he was talking to me. I'd ordered at 4:36 p.m. and I didn't get my order until 5:40. It took over an hour. Once I got my order the older male staff member said, "Do you want a free pop or ... ?" very hesitantly, begrudgingly. Everyone there just seemed annoyed that I had come in, ordered something, paid for it, and then expected to eventually get it -- you know, the whole point of a restaurant? When people from out of town ask me about fried chicken in Chicago I always proudly tout Harold's but I think that is going to have to change, because the service at this place is so deeply messed up. They seem PROUD to give you horrible service, to where it's a bad idea to recommend it to anyone. tl, dr: When you pay for food at this Harold's, you have to remind them to eventually make it and the attitude is overall horrible. read more

I've been here a few times already and not quite sure why I never reviewed it. This location accepts credit cards, is very clean and has a spacious kitchen, but most importantly they have excellent customer service. Actually, to be honest...that isn't the most important thing. Their chicken is. We ordered their 8 piece mixed with mild sauce on the chicken, and an order of fries with mild so top as well. We always make the mistake and order a side of sauce as well, but you really don't need to order any additional sauces, because they're generous with their sauce. They're fries are nothing special, just really a filler but excellent with the mild sauce. The chicken is obviously their speciality here. They don't drop the chicken until you put your order in. In fact they don't even bread it until your order. It's that fresh. The chicken is fried perfectly. It has just the right amount of seasoning and spice, and the perfect crisp. And then they cost it with mild sauce. So what you get with every bite is a saucy, juicy and crispy combination. Gotta love Harold's. read more

This is the Harolds I visited the last time and let me tell you, they are still as delicious as they were back in 2012. They still cook the food to order, ask questions for whether you was make adjustment without any issues. It takes about 25-30 minutes for an order, and they remember who is who (but hang on to your receipt, they might check it at some point). You will definitely have to wait to eat this food for at least 20 minutes, it is HOT! In retrospect, I should have taking the coleslaw out of inner bag. I swear the chicken was still warm after two hours! They last piece flew back to NYC with me and was reheated in the toaster oven three days later and it was still delicious. I wish I bought a larger box, I miss it already. read more

Every time I come to Chicago I always make it my goal to stop at a Harold's location and every location I go to is amazing. Went to location #36 and it was an amazing experience and fast. I always grab the 6 wing dinner with mild on the side. The dinner includes fries and bread, and the beverages are cheap as well. Not a big dining area just a walk-in area with 2 counters with stools so not that big of an area to eat but seats are available. No private parking just the streets which are paid meter. The area at this location is very busy so finding parking can be hard but if you have patience it's worth it. read more

Harold's is iconic for fried chicken (and more) with franchises in and around Chicago and a few other cities and states. And while menu items and prices are subject to some variation, it's not a significant difference. I ordered Harold's through DoorDash from the Wicker Park location. Their menu offers the obvious fried chicken that can be customized to the number and type of pieces in any combination. They have quarter, half and full chickens, mixed, all white or all dark, wings and boneless wings as well as tenders. They also sell fish - catfish and perch. Sides are also plentiful and include fries, mac and cheese and others. We ordered the 2 fried chicken breast dinner which came with fries, white bread and your choice from quite a few sauces (and we added coleslaw (at no additional charge) and a side of mac and cheese. The fried chicken breasts were delivered piping hot with each breast being very large, well seasoned, crunchy and juicy. It was one of the best pieces of fried chicken I've ever had! The fries were packaged under the chicken in a paper bag and were cold and soggy by the time they arrived and the Mac and cheese was also cold. My advice is don't get this food delivered - other than the chicken, it didn't stand up to being in the DoorDasher's car in only a paper bag while he made another delivery first and ended up delivering my order 20 minutes late (that's the norm for Door Dash). The only suggestion I would make to Harold's would be to better package their food for pick-up and delivery orders. Otherwise the food was delicious and the restaurant had it ready on time. Tried this place after hearing much about it on my visit to Chicago. First, I loved the area that it was in! Was able to find parking and walk to many shops around before ordering togo. The menu has plenty options to choose from and you're able to pretty much build a combo with your choice of meet and sides. There's no tables or chairs to eat inside, but there is few space outside to eat at. Food was great, portion sizes were good and everything is made fresh to order. Staff could do a little better with being knowledgable and being able to explain things to first time customers, but other than that 9/10, no complaints! Will definitely be back. read more

Maybe I ordered the wrong thing but there was a lot of hype over their fried chicken compared to some of the best in the Bay. I'm a fan of little whole in the walls and some local joints so I wasn't turned off by the bare minimum of the inside of this place. Every meal is made to order so you'll have to wait a little while. I was planning on the taking this on the plane ride home so I ordered the hot sauce on the side, I guess it would've been better poured over the chicken. I didn't get the hype of it but maybe next time I visit I need to order the wings instead of the chicken plate. We waited over 45 mins for the food to be ready. No one showed any sense of urgency. When asked how much longer after the first 20 mins employee seems annoyed the question was asked. In person prices and website prices are wayyyyyyy off. Like almost double the price. Save yourself time and a decent amount of money and go elsewhere. The food we were given wasn't the food Keith Lee was given. My husband had a hot wing dinner and fried green tomatoes, I had the wing and catfish combo. Catfish was good, fries were fine, wings were tasteless. Neither meal was complete as the coleslaw was missing from both. Of course when we tried calling back to go back and get it. Phone went to vm. I was visiting Chicago, and my friend told me i needed to visit a specific Harold's Chicken. So we went to the location, she told me exactly how to order it and i followed the instructions she gave me. I ordered a 4 piece wing fried hard with salt & pepper. She also told me to get a side of the mild sauce and the hot sauce. I did as i was told. I got the food to go and when we got in the car, she told me to take the food out the bag because the heat from the food inside the bag will make the chicken not as crunchy. Since i took the food out the bag, it was time to eat. I dipped the wings in the mild sauce, then the hot sauce and it was delicious. I love fried chicken, but i minimize how much i intake, but if i lived here, i would frequent here often. This location was a smash success and i was disappointed with myself that i only ordered 4 wings. I would definitely recommend. Sorry i did not take any pictures. Lastly, the inside is nothing spectacular. This location looks like a walk in only. From what i can remember, there were only seats to sit while waiting for the food. Was walking down Milwaukee Ave today on my break from work and saw this Harold's Chicken Location! I was pumped, I heard this is the best chicken in the city, or Chicagoland. Well I walked in and wasn't super impressed, no tables, floor peeling up, not allowed to eat inside. Looked like this place may have been great 15 years ago. So I looked past all that and ordered Dark Chicken and Catfish Meal with hot sauce to go. It took a while as expected, it's cook to order. Waited about 25 min and my order was packed to go. Woman taking orders and serving was polite and straight forward but seemed a bit stressed, one other guy working in back, I like that the kitchen was open to see. Unfortunately, the store reeked of old fry Grease pretty bad and this place needs a major clean up. Kind of nasty IMO. Got back to the office, opened it at it looked pretty good, portions were not skimpy. It tasted pretty good, but there was really no crunch. chicken batter was different than the fish batter, my dinner came with 2 smaller pieces of catfish and 2 average to small size drumsticks and handful of soggy fries. I had them put the hot sauce on it, (because she asked me, "Sauce on it, or on side?") Not hot or spicy at all, basically seemed like watered down bottled LA Hot sauce). And I should have got it on the side, it just added to the sogginess of my fish, fries and Chicken. I seriously think the vat oil in this place is old, very old, you can tell in the taste of the food. Will I go back, I am not sure. If they can get rid of the smell, replace the oil in the vats, clean up a bit and put tables in the dining room, then probably.
