There were 2 guys working and they did an amazing job of preparing everyone's food. I had the catfish along with the hot wings. Both things were perfectly seasoned. Why is this place getting such good reviews? I have no idea! I was pretty excited even though many people have posted "I wouldn't come here sober" or "after a heavy night of drinking...." but everyone seemed to state that this place was special. I mean I've been to some amazing late night bar foods that I would even eat while sober (although mentally after thinking about the caloric intake sober I probably wouldn't) but this place has nothing special about it. I posted an updated picture of this place. The sign is a faded yellow that it isn't easy to read what you are ordering. The bullet proof glass is a testamate of how long this place has survived in this location. Scared to order anything on the "fish" menu, we decided some burgers and fries. The "cook" pulled some frozen prefabbed burgers out of the freezer and some non-special buns from the pantry. He grabbed a bag of frozen non-special fries out of the freezer and put it in the deep frier. Then it just became a waiting game, let everything get unfrozen and pile everything up. Trust me, you can make a better burger and fries at your home, there is a jewel near by, it will be healthier, cleaner and tastier than whatever will come out of this place. I don't understand everyone's infatuation with their fries either. I mean even the bad reviews throw in a "at least the fries were decent." I think this was the first time that my wife and I didn't finish the fries from a burger and fry combo. Maybe he had just changed the grease or something but they were really nothing special. Coming in with expectations firmly in check, my wife and I came by for lunch yesterday. We ordered the regular gyro combo (gyro, fries, can of soda), and the single cheeseburger combo (again, with fries and soda). Total: $12. For $6/person, you get exactly what you'd expect--good-enough fries, a burger that is questionably ground beef, and a pretty tasty gyro with very tender meat and a pita that did the job. The place was clean enough for us and the service was fast. Solid. Next time, I'm coming back for the two hot dogs and fries combo, which is somehow only $4. If there is even a hint of actual hot dog in the hot dog combo, this might be the best deal in the city (well, for cheap dives anyway). read more

Super Submarine is one of those fast food spots that you can count on te be open late, friendly,fast and affordable. I have only ever ordered delivery but it never takes longer than an hour. I've only ever had 1 complaint and after calling the restaurant they rectified the situation and refunded my money and apologized. I usually order the 5 piece chicken tenders which comes with fries,coleslaw,garlic bread and a drink for $8.99. If I want something quick this is one of my go to spots. I only give it 3 stars because there are plenty of fast food spots like this located on the Southside which are better all around in my opinion. The chicken wings are very good and seasoned perfectly too. Tip: Try the lemon pepper seasoning on your fries. The guy behind the counter was battering up some fish so asked about it. He said it was the catfish. Now I like catfish, but never thought about getting it here because I just assumed it would be frozen prepackaged garbage. Nope, he was battering fresh fish on the spot. Since it was about an hour before closing time I specifically asked if they were still delivering (to which the guy said yes, but it'll be about 45 minutes.) What I noticed was that over the phone they charged .10 more than Grubhub and $3 than eat 24 (eat 24 was labeled pick-up only, but had a delivery fee though?) Once again the $5 delivery fee for 2 miles was a bit much. The guy arrives about 45 minutes later with food in tow. Once I get in my apartment and look through it once again they messed up my order. This time I didn't get the soda that came with the cheeseburger (so they up-charged me and then didn't bring the soda.) Last time instead of the 2 gyro pies they gave me 1 spinach pie and sent the wrong drink as well. They improved on the packaging and look of the burger though I have to say. Tried some of the chicken and it was pretty meh and overcooked. 100% messed up orders, the up-charge, and the delivery fee so far makes this place lose a star in my eyes. Never had this problem at other Super Submarines. Don't get delivery, make sure you're in the restaurant so that they get your order right. read more

Unlike most reviewers, we came here during dinner time on a Saturday night. I was incredibly impressed by the service! The food was what I expected: a massive menu of Chicago-style fast food. I got a hotdog and my husband got a sub. Pretty much all menu items come with a free soda and fries. The fries were quite tasty AND even better with the hot sauce - which tasted surprisingly like Harold's hot sauce. The only negative about the food: they put ketchup on my dog. Now, for the real five star moment: my husband only finished half his sub, so I was trying to wrap it up to take it to go. The employees saw me doing this, and offered to re-wrap it. This place is by far one of mine and my husband's favorite new places to order from. They have an amazing Gyro cheeseburger and their fries taste like BK fries which is amazing. They also give you a pretty good amount of food for reasonable prices which is great. They also follow our delivery instructions (we dont have a phone) which is also amazing because so many places havent which resulted in our order being returned to the restaurant. I actually just ordered from them now, and can't wait until it get's here. Their prices range from anywhere like 2.99 for cheese fries and up, but nothing is too expensive either. This place is great. I used to live nearby, and anytime I'm in the neighborhood nowadays I stop by. This place has great, cheap, and fast food. Everything you could want when you're hungry, tired, or drunk (speaking with plenty of experience in all three). Shockingly good hamburgers, spinach and feta puffs, gyros, sub sandwiches, the works. Everything is made with care and quickly, and almost always a man named Assad is working: He is one of the nicest, most friendly people I've encountered in the city, and he remembers my name and what I'm doing and even has given my friends an apartment listing when he found out they were getting kicked out of their place. All of this and the man works long, hard hours dealing with some truly unpleasant customers deep into the night. If you go here, say hello. One day I asked him what he thought was best, and told me to order the chicken pita. DO IT, it's so insanely good. This place is fast, with incredibly hard working people that have to put up with a lot of crap (it's one of the only places open all night in the area), and they not only work hard but are incredibly pleasant, helpful, and good at what they do. So if you're nearby, by all means stop in and eat some chicken pita. It looks a bit of a hole-in-the-wall place, but don't be fooled: You will leave happy, very full without spending much money, and you'll probably have great conversation while you wait. I'm surprised to see some negative comments about people who work here being unfriendly, because I've been many, many, many times (again, used to live around the corner) and have always been greeted cheerfully. This place doesn't get enough credit, and has somewhat of a cult following amongst me and my friends. Super Sub has surprisingly decent food for very cheap... The subs are yummy, especially if you're into mayonnaise... they're pretty typical, but in a good way. Everything comes with fries and "free can pop"; it really feels like a bonus every time! I've had the cheeseburger, chicken strips, and fish sandwich as well, and all are solid. I dont know the guys name that works there (probably 7 days a week), but he is extremely friendly and always has a smile on his face. Its open until 4 or 5. Ive never had anything bad here. The gyros is great, pizza puff, yumyumyum, chicken philly, omfg. This place is the farthest thing from healthy, although they do have a selection of deli sandwiches. (I ordered one once, turkey I think, but to be honest, I dont remember eating it. lolz) The servings are generous, and most meals come with a can of soda and fries. If you are on a diet, dont bother. If you want some delicious fast food and damn near any hour of the day, then this is the place for you. SuperSub, keep doing what you do. And thanks for many late night meals. I'm very, very local, like a block away. I've been patronizing this place for nearly 3 years. I have yet to have a bad experience. Why is this place lovely? It could be that it's open more or less 24/7, till 4am weekdays, and 5 on weekends. It could be because it has more or less anything you can think of that can be cooked on a grill, or in hot oil. Literally, anything. It could be that it's cheap. I can get a Gryo w fries and soda for $6, a 1/4# cheeseburger w fries n soda for $4, or a footlong steak sub, fries n soda for $6. There are always more than 5 chicken strips in the order, for $6. It could be because the staff are friendly. Not to you? You were probably drunk, or rude, perhaps you demanded your food be cooked really fast when there was one person working and 15 people in the store. I've seen it at least half the times I've been in there. This place is the best in the area, by far, for food in a pinch, or when you're drunk late at night. They even serve breakfast. read more

Midway through my second bite of that salty, greasy, meaty goodness, I was pleasantly surprised to find a bonus amidst my juicy beef: a full-length Italian sausage. No, it wasn't nearly enough to have just a sandwich full of meat as big as my thigh - they had to put a fucking sausage inside. The fried mushrooms and orka are incredible. This place is amazing. I had my first Italian Beef Sandwich after one of my roommates kept telling me how awesome they are. It's beef with a freakin sausage in the middle. I had never seen so much beef in my life! Because it was close to my apartment, my roommates and I were regulars there. Not the healthiest food, but delicious. Fun fact: As of May 8, this place received 3 health code violations. Of course, I saw the sign after I ordered and paid for my fish "nuggets" (great choice, right?). The violations had to do with lack of cleanliness, bugs, and not wearing proper hygienic gear while handling food. You can see the sign next to where you order. So I show my friend, and he said, "well, you've experienced worse while you were traveling to [insert developing nations here], right?"
