First time trying Harold's and fortunately it'll be my last. I came based on a recommendation as it was my first time visiting Chicago. initial impressions, just going in the establishment, another reviewer described it perfectly as "dingy"... Most of the food was a major letdown. The chicken came out hot, so I'm assuming it was made to order, but both the tenders and wings were overcooked, dry, and pretty flavorless. For what I paid, especially the side portions like the okra were pretty disappointing... Taste wise, it was the best tasting thing I got, but still very skimpy portions... literally maybe a few tablespoons of okra lol. The customer service was even worse. On Sunday morning, August 9, 2026, the gentleman working the register made an already disappointing experience even worse. The large partition at the register made it difficult to hear him especially with all the loitering bystanders coming in and out of the establishment and how loud things were behind the counter in the kitchen. so when he first asked if I wanted a bag, I asked him to repeat himself. I said yes the second time, he handed me my food, and then said "thanks, dumbass." I don't think he realized how loud he said it, trying to say it underneath his breath I guess... I just kept my composure and left since he had already handed me my food. No need to make two fools out of this situation. There was no misunderstanding or mistake in what I heard. I can only assume he thought he could get away with saying it because I had to ask him to repeat himself earlier, I really don't know what his problem was... Either way, if you don't have much patience, you need to get off that register bud, and do something different... Can't have horrendous customer service and subpar food. First visit, first impression, and a very easy decision not to come back. Especially with so many better places to get chicken of all things... This being my first time in Chicago it was only right that I got my first meal at the fabled Harold's that I've hear about my entire life. The place was pretty dingy and had some questionable people loitering in and outside the business which didn't bother me but I by the looks of it, some people knew better than me than to stick around after getting their orders The nice cashier was getting chastised loudly and aggressively by who I imagine is the manager or owner. Maybe that's a Chicago thing idk? Lol None of that would've truly bothered me if the food was good but I was unimpressed. Chicken and fish didn't have much seasoning to care for, but luckily I had some "mild" sauce to make it more tolerable. I have had 0 problems. This is my location in the west loop. I've been frequenting the joint for 2 years now and they are consistent. The food is always hot ready to eat and the order is usually accurate. The wait time is about the same as any other that I have been to. Its a hit or miss on getting any location to answer their phone. The person that took my phone order was very polite and my order was ready when I arrived to pick it up. The ABSOLUTE WORST customer service I've received in my life. I ordered through google / delivery.Com. I placed my order around 11:10am. And was given an order ready range of 11:26 - 11:45. They were to open at 11. I got to the location around 11:20 and the doors were locked. A very nice gentleman was outside and told me we were waiting for a cashier. The phone number was busy when I tried calling it in. This has happened to me twice now. The food is decent but this location nickle and dimes you for every little thing. They charged me $1 for a cup of mild sauce when you say you want it on the side. However, getting an order with mild sauce on the chicken is included in the price. I do love a good Harolds location. The wings are always on point and the gizzards (if you like them) are always tender and amazing. You can't go wrong with Harold's as they always aim to please with freshness. I like em' and that's all that matters. Some may say it's not a good flavor but I beg you differ as the taste, definitely rivals southern wing stops and this is something I look forward to when it comes to chicken wings. This location had a nice setup and the dining area was very well stationed away from the counter and enough room to breathe. It may be a little jarring to see the "plastic divider" near the counter but I get it, either they are being careful since COVID or they are using this as a protective barrier for thieves, not sure. But regardless it doesn't deter from the service. They are very friendly here so make sure you come in with a smile and they will return it also with a smile. THe prices are average to Harold's around Chicago so I am glad they didn't spike it up since this is in the area its in. The food arrived quickly and was still nice and hot. Unfortunately, both of our meals that we ordered for delivery were supposed to come with coleslaw, but it was missing from our order. The restaurant sends out a satisfaction survey afterwards, but there is no ability to tell them that food was missing or to tell them why they received the rating we gave them. Be aware, the fries are packed underneath the chicken instead of being packaged separately. I had ordered chicken wings with sauce so the fries were sitting in a pool of the sauce and were very soggy when they arrived. I was also disappointed that the sauce appears to be poured on after the wings are put into the container so only 3 of the wings had any sauce on them. Most of the sauce was soaked into the fries and the bread on the bottom instead of coating the wings. The lemon pepper chicken is a heavily salted coating which was unpleasant.
