Sweet Basil in Vail, CO, offers a quintessential mountain dining experience with a quaint ambiance, particularly in the open-air room that lets you fully immerse in the crisp mountain air. The Princess and the Bean cocktail was a standout--a perfect blend of tequila that balances sweetness without overwhelming the palate, offering a smooth, enjoyable sip without the sharpness of tequila. The whipped feta was a delightful start, presented beautifully and perfectly creamy. The hibiscus honey added an ideal mix of tangy and sweet. The steak tartare was another hit, seasoned just right with mustard undertone, making it irresistible. The only downside was the portion size--it left you craving more. The heirloom tomato salad was a well-executed mix of sweet and savory, elevated by the peaches and peach balsamic. The homemade mozzarella added the perfect finishing touch. The tortelloni en brodo was perhaps the least impressive of the evening. While the mushrooms, asparagus, and sauce were flavorful, the lamb mortadella didn't quite elevate the dish as expected. On the other hand, the chicken la brasa was a winner, with the chicken being moist and tender. The potato après and fingerling potatoes were excellent sides, complementing the main dish well. One minor drawback was the slower service due to the restaurant being quite busy, which slightly impacted the overall experience. Overall, Sweet Basil is a must-visit for anyone in Vail, offering a well-rounded dining experience with a few exceptional dishes and a cozy, inviting atmosphere. read more

Super sad to have to do as I loved my first experience and sone if the second experience but the end totally ruined the whole thing. I ordered duck the first time and was blown away, possibly one if the best ducks I have had. On the second visit yesterday I ended up ordering the duck, they had brought it out 2 times both of which weren't the right way. The manager did apologize both times and seemed sincere, and tried to fix it which was awesome. First time I ended up getting the ends of just pure fat and the second was so tough I couldn't eat it. I was told they would take care of me and I ended up ordering the Kampachi in the Bone broth. And they asked if I wanted dessert so I said ok and they suggested to get the sticky toffee pudding which wasn't bad. After this is when it went all bad. The waiter presented a Che k with zero balance and said it was all taken care of, so I leave a tip with the cash I had, walked to the restroom before leaving and I had forgotten my phone. Once I come in the waiter all of a sudden says he presented the wrong check and they made me pay for the full meal. I should have walked out but this left a bad taste in mouth. Probably will never come back here but I wanted the restaurant to know this is very much so unacceptable! Really ruined the whole experience! I had to ask to get the dessert off but they didn't even give a discount but wanted me pay fully even after saying I was taking care off. Very much so disappointed! read more

We came for a celebration and were seated in a nice area of the restaurant by the friendly hostess. The restaurant was also very busy just prior to the start of the season. The food was very delicious from the entrée to appetizer to dessert (this part was the tocky something...yummy). The waiter was okay but at times we were waiting awhile for something. It definitely wasn't 5 star service by any means. Lastly, the part that rubbed us the wrong way (and clearly hurt their score) was when we made the reservation, we informed them of our celebration dinner. The best restaurants that we dined at in the past from LA to NYC to Paris, always had champagne waiting for us at the table (birthday, anniversary, etc.). Mind you, we dropped $220 for two people this evening. The management at Sweet Basil had nada waiting for us. It definitely left a sour taste and for that, we will not return despite the great Chef they employ. read more

I've been a loyal customer here for over a decade, always appreciating the wonderful service, drinks, and meals. Unfortunately, things have taken a turn for the worse. The food was overly sweet and almost inedible this time around. We started with the onion lasagna and yellowtail appetizers, but both were disappointingly sweet and lacked flavor. My husband ordered the pork with the latke -- the latke was outstanding, and the pork was cooked well. I chose the beef and broccoli, which I was told would be tender, but it turned out dry and unbalanced. The sauce was excessively sweet, and the tempura broccoli was burnt. When I shared my concerns with the server, her only response was to offer me a box. There was no manager in sight, so we simply paid and left. This was far from the exceptional experiences we've had here in the past. It's disheartening to see the quality decline so much. read more

A couple of years ago, I had an unforgettable dining experience at a restaurant in Vail, CO. The atmosphere was warm and inviting from the moment I walked in. I decided to try their famous steak, and it was absolutely delicious. Cooked to perfection, each bite was tender and bursting with flavor. The service was exceptional, with attentive and friendly staff who made me feel special. The ambiance of the restaurant was enchanting, creating a cozy and memorable evening. What impressed me the most was their commitment to using high-quality ingredients. The flavors were vibrant, and the presentation was impeccable. I was somewhat disappointed. Half way. We drove from Breckenridge for our anniversary, and love five star dining. However, I sent my meal back, but my husband's was fantastic so I ordered one of his. I hear it's hit and miss. Not as consistent as you'd hope for the price that you pay. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves, but I wouldn't give it five stars until I don't have to send something back... I guess I should give it 4 because of my husband's meal, but they are also somewhat overpriced with their wine, etc. read more

As anticipated, the place was gorgeous...with a slightly formal air. Given that it was in the Vail Village (near the ski slope), my husband was able to enter the place in his rugged ski suit. Despite the ambiance, it was a bit dead. I was disappointed with the lack of French music overhead...though maybe it was on so low, I didn't hear it? There were plenty of breakfast-brunch options, but on the menu, some items were noted as taking 20 minutes (which we didn't have time for!), so I was a tad bummed about that. In any case, my husband chose this Huckleberry Bacon French Toast, and I ordered the Maryland Crab Benedict. For drinks, we both just ordered plain coffee. As expected, the foods were good. I was more impressed with my husband's choice, this super-fancy french toast. Not only did it look amazing, it tasted spectacular! Mine was good, but disappointing at the same time. I really liked the Crab Benedict, but I only half-liked the side salad (basically just Arugula with a few Walnuts and Figs). The total bill for these items ran over 100 bucks... which, was to be expected in Vail. However, for such a pricey breakfast, I felt that I should have absolutely loved it...but it felt short of that. Overall, I just expected a bit more from this breakfast experience. Again, the decor was gorgeous, but the ambiance wasn't fully there (because of the lack of music?). Service felt a bit short-skimpy as well. Foods were good, but mine especially (Crab Benedict) felt a bit lacking. Let's just say that I've had Crab Benedicts as just as good for half the price...and with better sides. Maybe lunch or dinner experience is better here? In any case, am glad we checked out the place...but I doubt I'll choose it for breakfast again.

After some deliberation about where to go for dinner, we landed here, and I'm very glad we did. It has a nice upscale feel without being over the top, and the menu has great options that really prioritize locally sourced ingredients like meats and veggies. To start, we split the smoked trout dip, which came with voodoo chips. It was a great combination with good flavor, and it wasn't over the top smoky. We also had the artisanal cheese plate with toasted baguettes, three kinds of cheese, and three kinds of jam to try. There was one cow's milk cheese and two goat cheeses, and the jams were great. For my main, I had the pan-seared Colorado striped bass, which was delicious and light. It was served over a sweet corn risotto with baby zucchini and a tomato jam, and the combination of flavors was fantastic. The sweet corn risotto was great, the zucchini was solid, and the tomato jam was quite interesting and added a fun element to the dish. For dessert, we were debating between the carrot cake and the chocolate mousse. We were eating with a vegetarian and noticed the carrot cake had something that was fried in beef tallow (indicated on the menu), so we happily went with the chocolate mousse on our waiter's recommendation, and it was elite. It was about half a tennis ball in size, with a hard chocolate shell on the outside and an espresso-flavored cream around it, kind of like a whipped cream texture, plus some toasted caramel toppings. My sister said it might be the best chocolate mousse she's had. We also had two glasses of Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley, which paired great with our meal.
