This place is a hidden gem. It looks closed on the outside but as long as the open sign is lit, it's open. I really enjoyed the baked sushi rolls. I came back 3 days in a row to try several other rolls and I'll always suggest this place when someone craves sushi. You won't be disappointed coming here. I use Yelp for everything and the only time I post a review is if the experience is really good or horrible. If I could give this place zero stars I would, sushi is great but service is bad. Me and my wife got here at 9:14 they close at 10:00 they refuse to serve because they're supposedly under staffed. We drove out 20 mins because they refuse to answer the phone. A month ago when we came in they also gave us a sushi roll that was nothing like the description in they're menu. When we questioned them about it they took the roll away from the table. When our bill came the roll was still charged to the bill we told them to take it off because we didn't eat it and they refused too. They're manager makes no sense and doesn't know how to treat his customers. They need to hire an adult instead of a kid. read more

Eaten here a couple times, and it's never been near a perfect experience, however, we continued to return because their teriyaki salmon is very good. Unfortunately, this restaurant lacks authenticity. The salad they serve with their $17 bento box is a garden salad with a pool of water at the bottom. Also, they don't serve traditional bento sides like tempura, instead they give you some sort of fries potato cake. (Doesn't match the picture on the menu.) A positive for the bento box is they do give 8 small pieces of sushi versus typical 4. In regards to the service, my husband and I arrived around 6 pm, and were the only guests there, with exception to 2 people at the bar. Despite this, our waitress, Mariam was very slow and inattentive. Literally checked our phones and gave her a 10 minute grace period as we contemplated walking out. She was constantly hanging out in the bar area on her phone and talking with the sushi chef. For the price you're paying, it's not worth the headache and lack of consistency. Came here for the first time to celebrate my mom's birthday, the experience was excellent. The server went far and beyond the duties of her job, she game my 1yr old a piece of paper and come coloring pencils. My little one was so happy, then the server heard us saying a birthday prayer for my mom and brought out mango ice cream for my mom. The food is so good, I don't ever eat shushi I just order the Yokosaba (chicken). I tried my moms California Roll, and I have to say I ate 2 rolls. It was sooo good and didnt taste fishy at all. We came here on Valentine's Day. They were busy by the time we arrived. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to accommodate us. Our server was super sweet. She didn't rush us or anything and let us take our time reviewing the menu since it was our first time. She was very helpful and we tried one of her suggestions, The Heart Attack. We also ordered The Titanic, Sexy Crunch, and the Red Bull. Our food came out in a timely manner. The plating was detailed and decorative compared to most. We were most excited when The Titanic came out as it was on fire. Everything tastes amazing! You can tell they use quality fish and that it is fresh! The Titanic again was our favorite. Tonight was my first time coming here and I have decided that I love, love, love this place! It's classy, the servers are friendly and fast, and the food is excellent. It definitely satisfied the intense sushi craving that I have been dealing with for the past couple weeks. I arrived around 5:30 PM on a week night and it was pretty dead. The host allowed me to choose my own seat, which was awesome. I chose the weird half booth/half table thing to accommodate the other three people that I was meeting for dinner. Once they arrived, we all ordered waters and appetizers. We got the soft shell crab, the garlic edamame, and shrimp gyoza. Now, I have never had garlic edamame. The only way I've ever had it is steamed and salted...this edamame is all buttery and garlicy. Sooooo delicious! The shrimp gyoza and the soft shell crab were also pretty awesome. Everything was so hot and fresh that I had to follow a bite of food with a sip of ice water. For my entree, I decided I would order an expensive roll and a more basic roll (mostly because I didn't think I would have room in my stomach for anything else). I went with the spicy California roll for my basic roll and the Spider roll for my more expensive one. The spicy California roll was basically just spicy grab and avocado, which was perfectly okay with me. The spider roll was a soft shell crab roll with cucumber, carrot, avocado, and crunch. I also requested eel sauce on my roll, which was delicious. The spider roll was verrrry wide and proved to be a bit difficult to eat in one bite. The end pieces had to be eaten in several messy bites. To finish our meal we ordered mochi ice cream. I had to get the green tea because that's how I roll. A lot of the green tea ice creams/mochi I have had in the past did not taste anything like green tea, but this mochi ice cream was pretty excellent. After everything, my bill came to about $31. I would say that's a pretty good bargain considering the quality of the food, the size of the portions, and the great service we received tonight. Sushiko, you have earned yourself a repeat customer. I have eaten there many times. I decided to order 4 rolls for pickup and spent $80. There was no chopsticks or utensils. There was only one container of ginger and one soy sauce for 4 rolls! luckily I asked for extra ginger not even imagining there was only one. I had to skip on ginger to make sure my family gets some. I believe good customer service would have been to ask for my needs and want's instead of wrapping it all tight for us to be surprised afterward. we had to stop at a gas station to get plastic forks. I travel out from Sacramento to Bakersfield for work and was craving sushi. I got there around when they opened for dinner and was surprised I was the only one there. I ordered a sashimi appetizer and was pleased to see that they provided an array of different fish and topped some off with the pickled wasabi. Pickled wasabi is better than the paste in my opinion. The sashimi was really good and tasted fresh. I also got the titanic roll which had eel on top with crab and shrimp inside I believe. It came out in tin foil and was lit on fire! I didn't know that's how it came and was pretty surprised haha When the fire was gone, I opened up the foil and the roll was a little smaller than expected. But all in all everything tasted pretty good. The bill was about $35 which to me seems like a lot, but I was happy with the meal and service all in all. Thank you guys! I'll be back! read more

If I were to describe my meal in two words, I would say that it was a pleasant surprise. The freshness of the fish and the spectacular presentation of the sashimi/sushi lunch combo easily exceeded my expectations for a restaurant surrounded by so much arid land. I enjoyed the salad as well, though it was overdressed. The dressing was so full of flavor, but unfortunately there was a bit too much. This review is on the sushi and service. The sushi selection was decent. When the rolls and nigiri came out, the presentation was nice and tasted great - no fishy taste. I would come back and have sushi here again. What was lacking upon my visit was customer service. The restaurant wasn't packed the night I visited, but there was only one sushi chef and one server. Needless to say, my guests and I received our orders pretty late after ordering - not to mention, the nigiri didn't come as ordered (received red snapper instead of salmon). To remedy the delay in food service, we were comped a few mochi, to which one of the two orders came out wrong. Aside from the need for service improvement, the sushi was good and the ambiance was nice, so I'd come back and ask that service improve a lot more. Update: Dined in recently to find that service is still lacking. Doesn't seem the servers are experienced. Are they nice? Sure. But there is clearly lack of experience. Sushiko: invest in your service. It's ruining the total experience your restaurant has to offer. Your food is good. Service needs to improve. read more

I love this place! I previously wrote a tip that customers avoid the gray chairs---and I'm pleased to say they have all been replaced! All seats are now very comfortable :) great job sushi kO! It's open seating here, so pick where you want to sit. They provide complimentary miso soup, which is a nice way to warm up the taste buds. I love to order hot green tea and their pickled cucumber salad to start. The screaming o, toro special, and super philly rolls are my favorite dishes! We came here by the invite of some fellow sushi lovers and friends of ours. We do have our favorite spot but we are always up to try a new "hot spot" for fresh sushi. It was a Thursday evening at 5pm so I know most are just getting off work so I expected it to be dead when we arrived. Our server informed us if we ordered before 5:30 it was happy hour it was buy 2 get 1 free on the rolls. Sounded good to us!! Our friends got stuck in typical Bako evening rush hour traffic, but made the cut off. My husband ordered his usual sashimi chefs special 10 pcs. I believe, but unlike our usual spot it wasn't a combination of different fish. You selected one fish. We chose the 911 (my choice) I really don't remember what my friend had as her roll and the server recommended a roll for our "free" it was --- yep I'm drawing a blank!!! But it was delicious!!! No rice crab and avocado inside wrapped in salmon, Oh my gosh Devine!!! I will just have to describe it next time because I can't remember what it was called. And our other friend had the bento box, beef. Their menu was very extensive and expensive with all the usual suspects, I noticed the same names of all the same rolls as most every sushi place in town so really there wasn't anything much different. The 911 was very spicy as it should be, although I thought the salmon was, and I know it tends to be but it seemed to have a lot of tendons. For the prices I wasn't impressed. The atmosphere was nice it is darker in there giving you that more upscale feeling. Aluminum chopsticks are a nice touch. Although the server wore jeans and a t-shirt. She was a great server very attentive and knowledgeable. Sushi Chefs didn't even look at us for us being the only ones in there for a good hour. Very limited saki selection too. I must say this is a very decent sushi place for Bakersfield standards. The decor was modern, the lighting was dim, gorgeous fish tank by the entrance. Friendly waiter service. Oh and water comes in bendy straws. Never have I been served water with bendy straws as an adult...I was speechless and ecstatic at the same time. My friend and I came here for happy hour lunch. I believe it was everyday 3-6pm 1/2 off appetizers and buy 2 rolls get the 3rd one free. And sure enough we took the bait. The appetizers ordered: 1) super volcano: rice bed on the bottom, top was pieces of scallops, lobster, crab and the house sauce plus eel sauce. This dish by itself could be a meal already. We were surprised at the portion of this appetizer... And for the 1/2 price of $5, it was a bargain. Get this one!! 2) baked green muscles: this wasn't too eye-catching but edible. A lot of sauce on it but nothing fancy. This was a miss for me. Comes in 4 half shell pieces. 1/2 price of around $3.5 The rolls ordered: 1) sexy crunch: basically a tempura wrapped roll with sprinkled crunch flakes. Tasted normal to me. 2) rainbow roll: Cali roll with assorted fresh fish on top with avocado. This was my second favorite out of the three rolls. The fish was fresh and the portion was perfect. House sauce on top. 3) something wrong: soft shell crab roll with avocado and some other fish I forgot. But this was my favorite. Also made to perfection. Desert: Strawberry mochi ice cream: its two of the standard sized mochi ice creams cut in halves so there's 4 half pieces total with a load of whip cream and drizzled chocolate syrup. Decorative little dish. Loved it. Total came out to be $44 flat so this was a good deal considering the amount of food we ordered for two... Of course we left with food coma. Met a bestfriend here tonight, after hearing her rant about how amazing it was. I love sushi, so obviously I'm totally in especially since I've never been. I loved the ambiance, dim lit, rustic style tables and chairs, beautiful artwork, and fish tank. Clean. We were sat immediately, given menus and asked our drink order. I ordered the Kiss Me roll, spicy tuna and cucumber on the inside and salmon on the outside. Usually my go-to roll. It was extremely small for my liking, especially for the price. The salmon was cut thinly where I think they could have given a bigger portion. The taste just wasn't there for me, I almost felt like I ate the roll so it didn't go to waste not so much because I was dying for the next bite. The second Toro just opened not too long ago on Coffee Rd next to In Shape in that small shopping center next door. Here is what I thought... First off the place is very small, at least half of the size of the original location on Ming. This wasn't a problem considering we were the only customers there. On a Saturday afternoon. Obviously nobody is really aware that this place is here yet. It is very hip and trendy atmosphere as the other location is as well. We had the Shrimp Gyoza for an appetizer and it was beautifully presented with a delicious soy based dipping sauce but the gyoza itself tasted like it came out of the frozen food section of a grocery store. It wasn't bad by any means but you could definitely tell. Normally at a sushi restaurant I don't go for the crazy deep fried rolls even though that is what Bakersfield sushi places do well. Unfortunately it is just there to mask the lack of freshness and quality that local sushi places provide. However I do have a surprisingly pleasant experience every once in awhile around town. We had two orders of salmon nigiri ($4 an order). The salmon was not fresh. It was edible but definitely wouldn't be served at high end sushi place (like Toro tries to be) in most cities. We also had a spicy tuna roll. In my opinion a spicy tuna roll is pretty hard to screw up. If the tuna is anywhere near fresh the spice in the tuna and it's accompaniments will mask any bad taste in your mouth. Once again the tuna was not fresh but edible. It tasted a lot like the spicy tuna rolls you'd buy in the deli case at a grocery store. The plating was beautiful however. We also had the Vegas Roll ($12). My girlfriend wanted this. It's basically a roll with salmon, cucumber and cream cheese that has been deep fried and smothered in a mayo based sauce. This roll was pretty good but like I said before...this isn't a depiction of good fresh sushi. It's a cop out really. I know a lot of people like their deep fried rolls but it's not for me. We also got the green tea ice cream ($5) for dessert. Unfortunately the only thing that resembled green tea was the color. It tasted like vanilla ice cream with green food coloring. We couldn't detect even a hint of green tea. However it was still good and we ate it all. Overall I got exactly what I expected. Bakersfield sushi. It's unfortunate that a place with so much potential in a convenient area of town couldn't step up their game. Especially with the high prices (bill was $44 and we didn't get much) you would hope this place would be better. IMO it's about par with their other location. You can see my review for that too if you'd like. I'm sure once people discover this place is here it will be packed every night just like on Ming. We started going here when it was still Toro. Love the rolls, they are the perfect size. Service is always friendly and Jenny is very knowledgable about the selection. She always suggests excellent rolls for our taste. Today we tried the tropical roll. Very light and fresh. We always enjoy the cajon roll and red bull. The ex-girlfriend is another of our favorites. We walked in and kinda stood there for a minute or two before anyone greeted us. There only one other couple in there at the time. The service was just okay but the sushi and edamame were delicious. We started with the garlic edamame and seriously wanted to order more. It was the best edamame I've ever had. We then ordered three rolls to share; the red bull which was incredible! We asked them to cook the steak a bit but they didn't. Apparently they don't take special requests? Either way, I was pleasantly surprised by how amazing the combination of all of it was. Rolls are good, service was ok but lacked in certain places. I was amazed by the photos of other Yelpers and I got intrigued by it, certainly got my attention one certain roll. I was seated by a very young man seemed nervous, certainly a FNG (new guy). Service was not going to be good after noticing that and it was okay, not going to exaggerated but wasn't good or wasn't the worst. I immediately asked for the Red Bull roll and the usual Las Vegas roll. Red Bull roll, had me speechless with its cooked Filet Mignon topping and delicious membranes, felt like heaven for for a minute. It's a must for anyone to try. Host was nice (she should of been our waitress) gave us free Miso Soup which was very generous of her, thanks to whoever you are. Okay now to the other items, like rice, noodles etc. it was lacking flavor, and portion. I don't expect to have tons of it but for the price, well let's just say my buck better get bang for every dollar. My second time here - I love it!! I love everything about this place. Sushi is SO good. A bit pricey but definitely worth it. If you go between 3:30-5:30 M-F, they have a happy hour that is buy two rolls get one free. Our server was super friendly and nice. We ordered three rolls for myself, my sister, and my daughter and a lunch bento box for my mom as well as soup and a desert for everyone. The rolls were prefect and not over sized. My moms bento box had tons of food and it was all good. The Miso is miso it had good flavor but unlike most places there was more seaweed then tofu which I liked. For dessert we had their mochi which comes in a couple different flavors. We got green tea and mango. This is the only place I've been to that had mochi and it was very nice. This is my absolute favorite sushi place. Jun is the best chef and always takes care of us. Since the new owner took over, it's nicer inside, and I like the extended menu. Get the shrimp wrap- awesome. Today, we had the shrimp wrap, the new bacon roll, the crunchy caterpillar, and the deluxe rainbow.
