Absolute awesome establishment, from the decor to especially the food A++++. It's not dark at all that as far as the lighting that most people were talking about! It has good lighting. I'm pretty skeptical about branching out when it comes to sushi. I'll do it, but I go into it knowing to place my expectations a few notches down. This place was really good. I don't know how else to start other than I was so pleased with everything we ordered. I had the Pink Lady roll after much deliberation, and although the set-up of the roll surprised me being wrapped WITH fish rather than rolled inside (I probably just didn't read the description, to be honest, but that's just me and my easy distractibility), the flavor was great. Totally something I'd order again. I got your basic spicy tuna roll as well, and was not disappointed with it. I recently went to a more popular sushi joint in town (that shall not be named for the sake of not bashing), and I couldn't even finish my spicy tuna roll. This place relieved my standards and love for spicy tuna. The only "complaint" I have -- which isn't a legitimate complaint and I can hardly even count it as such -- was that the service was a little slow. Not extraordinarily noticeable, and was within acceptable restaurant wait time, but that is something to note going in. It wouldn't stop me from coming back though, as the waiter/host/staff was all very friendly and even brought out some of that FANTASTIC garlicky edamame while we waited. I'm a garlic fiend, call me biased. Oh well. It definitely helped to forget about any silly little wait. Also, I'm still thinking about the mochi green tea ice cream with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Alright, this review gets 1 star for Veronica and the other waitress(did not get her name) who were both great otherwise it would be a big fat ZERO stars. I walked in and was the only customer there around 6pm, waitresses greeted me nicely. My girlfriends showed up shortly afterwards - still only people in the restaurant. We had some questions on the wine and unfortunately the waitress did not have much, if any wine knowledge, so she couldn't help with choosing a wine, and they were also out of the wine I initially requested. We ended up ordering sake to share which was good. Our orders all came out as ordered, except they brought us an extra roll and stated she thought we ordered a 5th roll - but we did not. She offered the roll to our table but stated we would have to pay for it. Uh...1 not our mistake and 2. Why would we pay for that if we never ordered it? Not a good business practice. One of my friends tuna roll was so spicy she couldn't even eat it. She had to return the roll - the waitress simply said "oh well I'm not surprised because the sushi chef - who is also the owner of this business - is in a bad mood today." So clearly this chef made her roll extremely spicy on purpose!!! Wow!! probably because he thought we were being difficult about ordering the wine earlier. So because you, the business owner, don't train your employees on what you serve on your menu, you punish your customer?!, Also makes sense why the extra roll trying to get us to pay more. When we went to pay we stated we didn't feel she should be charged for the tuna roll since it was inedible, and she got upset and started crying. She turned her back to the sushi chef and seemed extremely stressed out. We started talking to her and we felt terrible at the stress she was under, all while he kept staring at us and eavesdropping on our conversation. After leaving here I actually felt nervous for her, and even thought this guy may be abusive to his employees. He even takes a portion of their tips. This owner is clearly a bad business owner, and an even worse human being! I will never spend another dime at this restaurant. read more

We went for a rare date night. Started with a gigantic Kirin, followed up with a large hot Saki.... Or five Next up, Garlic edamame, and a Yellow Submarine. I waited, and savored my treats. I must have read reviews for another place because Sushi Ko is not 4.5 star worthy... I am so disappointed because the reviews really hyped this place up, but I was completely disappointed! To start with the positives: -Our server Jakell was so great, attentive, polite and accommodating -The rolls are satisfactory, but definitely have had better at other places in town -The ambiance is very cool with a nice esthetic inside The negatives: -The sushi (fish on rice) was SO GROSS... especially the albacore. It was mushy and disgusting. We order 4 pieces of tuna, 2 of which were a pinkish/brown color (Eww), while the other two were the normal reddish color. The fish was somewhat stringy and got stuck in between your teeth- definitely not the melt in your mouth kind of fish. -The sushi chef was NOT friendly AT ALL and when we inquired about the albacore, he was pretty rude in his response, told us the other places we have gone for albacore are giving us the "cheap parts" and that mushy albacore is how it is suppose to be... UMM NO guy. -One of the staff members was mopping the floor right next to the sushi bar after a large party left and the smell of chemical cleaner was SO strong, that it completely ruined our appetite. I am all for clean restaurants, but not with high powered chemical during dining hours. All in all, the serving staff was lovely, the food.. not so much. Heard this place was good so went to give it a try. The place is very nice and looks well kept. It's a little more expensive than most sushi places, although not by much. The food was good. Typically my first time trying a sushi place is to try the spicy tuna rolls to gauge, if they're good, I'll come back. The rolls were good, much spicier than typical spicy tuna rolls but not too much. Friend got the rainbow rolls which were also pretty good. Sushi Ko is of a rare breed, especially given it's location. There are a handful of sushi places in this immediate area, but I believe that Sushi Ko sets itself apart by being the most closely aligned with the feeling of an authentic sushi restaurant, even if their menu extends a bit further than solely Japanese fare. Neither too small nor too busy, it is an intimate restaurant that's ideal for dates and/or entertaining small groups of people. Everything I have ordered has been wonderful, and if I have any qualms it would be the small portions not being reflective of the pricy nature of the menu. The dream roll is just that, a dream. This coupled with their tempura rolls and inclusive menu (bimibap bowls and beef bulgogi, anyone?). Service is above average and more speedy than most. Being that seating isn't too expansive it is probably best to avoid peak hours, though. read more

It just felt thrown together. Taste was good though. Average overall. Service...only one server for the whole place during dinner hours. He was hustling and was on the spot for everyone! That man deserve a raise as he is a great asset to that location! I would give a 5, but a different server came over and kinda tried to rush me out the door. Not sure what that was about. Cleanliness...table and chairs were dirty. Noticeably dirty. Chairs had holes in them, I mean heck mine didn't even have a cushion! The dishes had chips and cracks and stains. Floor was sticky. First, the waitresses who was supposed to be our waitress was sitting at the bar on her phone for awhile and then finally asked someone else to get our table. We order edamame, vegetable tempura and a few sushi rolls. Everything came out all at one time for starters. Then after I tell her no spicy crab in the roll they put spicy mayo all over two out of three of the rolls. I asked her if it stated that spicy mayo comes on the rolls in the menu and she said "yes" so I asked for a menu and it DOES NOT state that comes on the rolls. My kids who love sushi could not eat the rolls they ordered so I had to order more rolls for them to eat. Figuring they'd not charge us for the first ones due to their mistake... nope they charged me for those plus the ones I had to order in addition. Also my kids sat there with empty water cups for the majority of the time we were there. Also the music they had playing was dropping F bombs every other word. I have been to plenty of sushi bars throughout the state and a few here in Bakersfield. This is one of those places you look at and have to say "don't let the outside fool you!" Our visit was absolutely awesome. The fish, which is the most important aspect, was delicious, fresh, vibrant, and light. The look of the place, atmosphere, staff, service (Tanya was great), all were excellent! They also gave us free ice cream at the end, and that was tasty as well. Sad sad panda :( I didn't get to try any sushi on my visit! Unfortunately, this location stays open until 10:30 however they close up their kitchen by 10:00. Such a bummer.. Based on the reviews I was expecting some awesome tasting sushi. I'll be back again to re review once I am actually able to get in. The restaurant overall appeared to be like that of any traditional sushi style restaurant.. It looked like a nice place to eat. Hopefully we can try again real soon. I recently picked up a large take-out order for a surprise party- if you ever wonder how good a sushi place is, see how they handle takeout orders. We ordered a ton of sushi for pickup at a specific time. The chefs prepped everything they could on advance, then waited until we were there to put the finishing touches on our order. It took a few extra minutes, but hot stuff arrived hot, cold stuff cold, and all intact.
