One of the better sushi places we've been to outside of Japan in Texas. We put our name into the waiting list and didn't have too long to wait before being sat at the counter. After we placed our order (a sheet of paper with numbers next to each sashimi/nigiri/roll we wanted), it took at least 5-10 minutes before the counter chefs started preparing our sushi plates. We walked into the restaurant and were told by the host that there was about a 10-minute wait, with seats available at the bar in the meantime. While waiting in the front lobby, I sat next to a couple while my partner parked the car. The woman complimented my nails, which sparked a friendly conversation. When the host came to seat them, she mentioned having seats next to each other. We assumed she meant bar seats and followed along--only to discover we were being seated at the same table as this couple. Suddenly, we found ourselves dining across from complete strangers, which made for a very awkward experience. We tried to make the best of it, but it just wasn't working. To make matters more confusing, our server assumed we were all one party. The restaurant also would not allow any substitutions on menu items. I ordered a roll and was served something entirely different from what I expected. The service itself was friendly, and everything we ate was fresh. However, nothing stood out as particularly memorable, especially compared to other sushi restaurants in the DFW area. To top it off, we felt rushed out the door at 10:10 p.m., immediately after closing. Imagine coming in on a Friday night after a long day of work, looking forward to enjoying a nice sushi dinner with your family, elderly parents, and disabled brother -- only to be yelled at with "GET OUT! GET OUT!!" by the older white-haired manager. She assumed I had walked into the reserved area without checking in, even though my husband had already checked in with the host. Meanwhile, the younger black-haired manager kept questioning my husband about whether he had actually checked in. At that point, we were being confronted by TWO managers, while one of them was literally screaming in my ear to "GET OUT." I was extremely upset and asked why I was being yelled at. Eventually, the host came over and explained to the younger manager that my husband had already checked in properly. Of course, neither manager apologized. Great example of Japanese hospitality, right? After we were finally seated in the reserved area and had already ordered appetizers, my 16yo daughter arrived and was stopped at the host stand and questioned about her age. The younger manager then came over and asked who made the reservation and why someone under 16 was included. My husband calmly showed the reservation confirmation, which did not mention any age restriction, but the manager responded with, "NO, you know!!" My husband then spent another 10 minutes at the host stand, and in the end, we were removed from the reserved area and moved to a table outside. To make matters worse, the final bill included additional charges labeled "20% party room" and "18% large party gratuity." Overall, this was some of the WORST customer service I've ever experienced. You are in the hospitality business -- who screams at paying customers this way? Sorry, but there are plenty of other sushi restaurants that actually treat their customers like fellow human beings. Parking: Free parking offered. Interior: Clean but a bit tight inside and difficult to move around. Seating was a bit cramped. Had to play a bit of Tetris when the food came out since the table at the bar didn't really have much space. Service: Can be a bit slow and unorganized when it's busy. My wife and I were seated at the bar for about 10 minutes with no service. A couple was then seated next to us. But for some reason, they were provided service first, even though they came after us. Today I was denied service because I was told my attire did not meet the restaurant's dress code. I was wearing a coordinated Lululemon athleisure outfit, which I consider to be neat and appropriate for a restaurant whose website states, "Nice casual preferred." The wording indicates a preference rather than a strict requirement. My family has been dining at this restaurant for years, and I have worn similar outfits on many occasions without issue--including this exact outfit during a visit just last week. The inconsistent enforcement of the dress code was both confusing and disappointing. As a longtime customer, I expected a more consistent and welcoming experience. Unfortunately, this interaction has left a very negative impression, and I can no longer recommend this restaurant to others. read more

We have been coming here for years and have celebrated several birthdays at this restaurant, so this experience was incredibly disappointing. The other day, we were asked to leave because we didn't want to leave our fruit in the car in 100+ degree weather. The only alternative we were given was to place it on the restaurant floor, as we weren't even allowed to leave it on the seat next to us. We didn't want to do this for hygienic concerns. Throughout the interaction, we felt talked down to and were treated rudely rather than with understanding. After being loyal customers for nearly a decade, we expected much better customer service. Thankfully, we took our business to another sushi restaurant we love and they instantly took our fruits to the kitchen fridge instead, a refreshing and welcome difference. Horrible waiting experience. In fact, never experienced in my life. First comes, first serve is common in restaurant unless you have a reservation but they let the people in way behind us even though we waited more than an hour. When I complained, younger hostess said "table available for 3-4 people" and older hostess said "you want to wait or out?". Wow.... No matter what time you get there, you will be lucky or unlucky if you are party of 2 and if you are unlucky, you will see many people walk in front of you even they are hour behind you. The hype about Sushi Sake -- 100% true. This place is the spot, and when they open at 5:30 PM, it fills up fast!! Right outside the door, there's a stand with a QR code--scan it immediately to get on the waitlist. Trust me, the wait can be at least an hour and a half. Also keep in mind, when every table fills up at once, that means a flood of orders hitting the kitchen all at the same time. We were lucky enough to be seated right at 5:30 PM, but our food didn't arrive until 6:40 PM. No worries, though--we made excellent use of the time drinking three large sakés. (Highly recommend.) Watching six sushi chefs work their magic with precision and speed--it was amazing. And when our sushi finally arrived, it was worth the wait. The portions? Generous. The rolls? Huge. The flavor? Absolutely delicious! So, if you're planning a trip to Sushi Sake, bring patience, an appetite, and maybe a designated driver if you go the saké route. The service staff, especially the older Japanese hostess lady, was incredibly rude. They definitely need to re-evaluate how they treat their customers, including making them wait outside in the heat when the restaurant has plenty of open tables inside. People spend their hard-earned money to enjoy a nice meal & make themselves happy, not to walk out unhappy after being served poor food or being treated poorly. The last few times we visited, certain food items were exceptionally bad (e.g. chawanmushi was hard, dry and gross). Maybe these are some of the reasons why the restaurant has not been popular like it used to be. The past couple of times we visited, the place was 1/2 or 1/3 empty during dinner hours. There are too many other good restaurants in DFW nowadays for Sushi Sake to rest on their past laurels. We went to Ebesu in Plano and had a wonderful experience. read more

Wow is an understatement when it comes to Sushi Sake. The all around mood when you walk in makes you feel so comfortable and this place is beautiful on the inside. If you decide to go on the weekend, make a reservation but make sure you aren't late. They will skip your party reservation if everyone is not all there, we saw it happen to a party in front of us. As far as the food, we ordered the sashimi mix for a starter and OH MY, that was so fresh and decadent. I could've had three orders. We also had a miso soup with our entree, it comes without a spoon because traditionally you sip from the bowl. The house salad had a ginger sauce that was different but it went so well on the salad. I tore it up. We also ordered a dragon roll and being able to watch the sushi master put that together was pretty cool. Soft shell tempura crab with the eel sauce is my favorite. This is one of the best sushi restaurants in Dallas! This restaurant has been here for YEARS but their quality remains top-tier. Going on a weekend, I recommend getting there when they open since there would be a long wait but on the weekdays, they seat you very quickly. When you get there, the ambiance is very calming and it feels like you got transported to Japan. The lighting and music reminded me of Kyoto. They also give you warm hand towels when you sit down at your table and offer you the menu. They have an extensive menu from ramen, udon, to sushi. Their sushi is very fresh and we also enjoy ordering from their seasonal menu! We ordered the Sushi Sampler B and Una Ju and we highly recommend both. Had such a great experience here last night for our anniversary dinner. We loved how fresh the sashimi was and the spicy tuna roll has the correct balance of tuna and avocado. Our favorite dish was the shrimp dumplings, which was served with a great mustardy sauce. The page came up and my first thought was "how could this place have a rating lower than five stars?" So I read some of the lower-rated reviews, and the answer became obvious: the fish is always fantastic, but some folks are upset about rudeness in the staff, with particular emphasis on one individual, it seems. Having worked for and with quite a few Japanese nationals at an America-based, Japanese owned, heavy manufacturing company, I feel like I've got a bit more street cred when it comes to evaluating sushi joints. Here's how you can tell the best sushi restaurants: look around you while you're there, and listen. Do you see Japanese people? Are they speaking Japanese to each other? Are they enjoying their experience in the restaurant? If you don't see and hear those, you're not in a GOOD sushi joint. We've sampled countless sushi places in Dallas, and Houston, and around the country. The sushi at Sushi Sake ranks in our top ten, nationwide. And the population of Japanese diners seems never to drop below 30%. Have we experienced the rudeness written about by the one- and two star reviewers? Yes. Once, and probably by the person most-complained-about. But the fish was still fantastic. If you're really going to bitch about getting charged for extra ginger, or about a staff member that doesn't treat you like royalty, you probably ought to drop back to those places where the chef makes a volcano out of onion rings and flips a severed shrimp tail into his shirt pocket. The food won't be as good, but they'll kiss your butt so well, you won't even notice. Sushi Sake has some of the best-tasting, best-presented sushi in the greater DFW area. We haven't been here for a long time and we decided to pay a visit. We were first ones to arrive and when it opened, we were seated right away at the sushi bar. Their sushi bar is very extensive and beautiful. We were very glad we got there when it opened up, bc it got very busy shortly after we got there. PB ordered fattier and fattiest tuna and fatty salmon sashimi(Market price for both tuna were something like $52-$53 each)and he enjoyed every bite of them. He also ordered 2 Uni gunkan(Market price of $52 each), Rainbow roll, volcano and Dynamite. I ordered Sweet shrimp, scallop sushi(delicious)and scallop rolls. Dynamite was so delicious. It turns out it now is so much easier to order online. And let me tell you it was less expensive, with way better quality, than that other Fast Food Sushi Restaurant I ordered from on Friday, August 30th. For example a pair of sushi tuna at the other establishment was $10, and Sushi Sake was $8, and much better quality! Where my Hubby will enjoy sushi with me, it's not his favorite. So when he goes on his annual camping trip with my 2 boys, I always treat myself to a night of sushi. My experience at Sushi Sake was enjoyable! I enjoyed all the foods my family and I ordered - koika kara age (fried squid), shrimp tempura udon, sushi & sashimi combo, sushi a combo, and volcano sushi à la carte. Everything tasted delicious, but the volcano sushi was very rich and heavy from the mayo that it was difficult to taste the actual fish. Service was great! The three of us ordered chicken karaage, shishito peppers, chirashi dinner, sushi/sashimi dinner, salmon skin handroll, and o-toro nigiri. The chicken karaage and shishito peppers were both well prepared and tasty but were very small portion size. They were not suitable for sharing purposes. Sushi and sashimi dinner had good fresh fish and the presentation was beautiful. The better value, though, was the chirashi dinner plate. It appeared to have as much variety and similar amount of fish but was 30% cheaper. (Normally the chirashi is served on a bed of rice in a bowl but at this place, it was served on a sushi plate, which wasn't a bad thing since you don't have to flip around the food). The salmon skin roll was average and the o-toro was good but not worth the price. For example, two small nigiri pieces were more expensive than the entire chirashi dinner. The service was spotty. They were clearly short-handed and we had to wait awhile to get the server's attention. Overall, we were impressed with the quality of the food, the presentation, as well as the great atmosphere. read more

We had so many things from the small menu. Not overwhelming with so many options. What they have in their menu are excellent options. Best thing we ordered was the sweet shrimp! Shrimp heads were deep fried, extra crispy, meaty, juicy, and so freaking delicious. Plump shrimp tail sushi with a hint of wasabi sandwiched between the shrimp and rice. Our wait staff was right on the details from keeping our water glasses full to assuring that the cork in the wine bottle was removed to get more air. We ordered approximately eight selections from the Sushi menu and each one was better than the last. The ambiance in the restaurant was attractive and clean.
