This was my third time coming to Sushi Ran. First two times (many years ago) it was amazing. This time super disappointing, if not just BAD... We came on a Saturday lunch for a special occasion and ordered some nigiri (hamachi was def not that fresh!), wagyu decent, salmon decent, unagi good. BUT for that price it better be stellar - and it wasn't! The rolls were mediocre at best (and small). The seaweed was chewy and the little pieces of rice were laughable. Do not order the crunchy roll (which was suggested to us - it was super sweet and tasted like candy)... We literally just ate in LA last week and for a THIRD of the price had a wayyy better meal AND drinks! Two of us spent $200 with tip and had NO drinks outside of green tea!!! The decor and ambiance needs sprucing up and some fixing. And to go to the bathroom you have to wait in line outside for a long time - I felt like I was at a night club! (the place wasn't even busy!) The waitress was nice enough although she was a little hesitant to send one of our dishes back- the salmon skin hand roll was not salmon skin - it was more like minced salmon with a weird 5-spice flavor that wasn't listed in the description. It was awful... I know the restaurant expanded, so maybe the quality has gone down. Maybe new owners? This isn't the special sushi place anymore, it's more like your everyday sushi spot with ridiculous prices... too bad, it used to be exceptional. read more

I placed an order for pick up, and it was about a 20 minute wait for an order placed at noon on a Saturday. We had an excellent meal at Sushi Ran to celebrate a special occasion. We got a last minute reservation, got a warm greeting, and were seated right away. I didn't walk around the restaurant but there's plenty of seating. The decor is simple and clean. We started with the seaweed salad and miso soup. The seaweed salad is definitely not the artificial colored and sugary stuff. This salad had layers of texture and flavor from various types of seaweed. The miso soup was also tasty and came out hot. We ordered a few rolls and they were good. The sushi was fresh with great ingredients. It's a level up from your usual neighborhood spot. The scallop roll was huge. The soft shell crab roll was made to order and had a nice crunch. The tuna roll was bright red and buttery. The star for me was the miso eggplant. I loved the sauce! My team wanted to celebrate a good sales month at Sushi Ran. We were extremely impressed by the quality of service and the food! The staff made it easy to arrange a reservation for our group of 7. Our table was located on the patio. The patio had a good amount of room, was covered, and offered gas heaters. The menu has lots of options! I recommend the King Sake Nigiri and Sashimi! Unfortunately, our last large order of nigiri, rolls and miso soup was definitely not as good. The salmon looked strange and was sliced completely different than ever before. The miso soup was forgotten by our server, then when we reminded them, the miso that was given to me was very weak in flavor. ( as if the pot wasn't stirred and I got the top ) It's normally great 'miso soup'. It is a lot of money to spend on not-so-good of sushi. Normally, Sushi Ran is worth the money. This is it. This is the Old G. This is one of the sushi spots in the Bay Area that trailbazed them all. I hadn't been back here for a decade or more but wound up back here the other day. If you don't have a reservation, they hold tables for walkins. That said, they tell you to just wait on the sidewalk with the others causing a Australian rules football scrum once they open. Give me a number, put my name on a list, or (here's an idea) use Yelp's waitlist. It made for a touch of stress but we the mob self organized into an ordered rank. The host was just not friendly about it almost comically so reminding me of a scene from a movie. Ok well we did get seated, and eventually someone came to us, and from there it was perfect. Food came fast, waiter was looking after us, everything was as delicious as we remembered from years ago. So they still got it. I've eaten at this spot a few times and absolutely love the atmosphere and food. They're always playing my favorite jazz and old school jams, which brings the space to life, aside from the spaced out chatter of happy and hungry customers. My sister and I sat at one of the high top tables outside, which felt private and we appreciated never feeling rushed within the 2 hours we were there. To start we got the agedashi tofu, toro and caviar, zuke sake, and tuna sashimi. The cut of both fish were excellent! The tofu was perfectly cooked and the sauce was by far the best I've had with agedashi tofu. For our main meal we got two rolls, the kaisen futo-maki and spicy tuna. The kaisen futo-maki roll tasted a bit earthy, which we didn't love, but the fish was delicious. The spicy tuna was very fresh and delicious! For dessert, we thought we'd end the night with something warm and got the miso soup and house tea which was soothing after a long dinner. My wife and I decided to try Sushi Ran after debating on it for many years. We drove over the bridge and were so happy that we took the trip. The ambience was very nice and the place was crowded with people on dates, families, and friends hanging out. We opted for the Omakase and were pleased with the quality of the fish, the preparation of the unique sauces and toppings and the service was great as well. We had a waitress coming back again and again to pour our champagne, to ask if we needed anything, and to just check on us in general. We ended up chatting with her quite a bit and also chatted a lot with the sushi chefs who were kind enough to answer all of our questions about the sauces and types of accompaniments that came with our Nigiri's. At the end of the evening we felt like having a tempura hand roll, it wasn't on the menu but they were kind enough to prepare one for us. DELICIOUS from start to finish. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a good sushi meal, a date night, Omakase, or good service. Top notch! I will be coming back for another visit! read more

As my bf and I were planning our Sausalito date we couldn't help but be drawn to this place for its "Michelin recommended" acknowledgment. We quickly made a 5:15pm reservation on a Monday evening. We checked in and they were aware of our indoor seating request. We were quickly greeted by our server who took us to our seats. We were one of the first customers and they sat us all the way in the back of the restaurant where it was dark and the table lamp was not even working in which our server had to switch out. The servers were all in uniform and seemed appropriately staffed. On Yelp, it said classy but most diners were in casual plain tees, denim short shorts and converse hence the hot summer day. I ordered the hot tea and my bf ordered the sake flight. Our waitress gave us time to sip on our drinks before taking our order which was nice. Bc of that, our drinks ran out quickly and but we were not offered anything more to drink. We ordered a variety off of the menu - edamame, miso soup, shrimp dumplings, veggie tempura, tuna roll, sake nigiri, chirashi bowl and miso cod. Overall the food was mediocre and I would disagree with the Michelin guide that it's the best value. The edamame itself was good quality but the flavor was nothing out of the ordinary. The miso soup was salty and had two awkwardly huge pieces of tofu. There was nothing basil about the six tiny shrimp dumplings which come out to $3/pc. The batter on the veggie tempura was perfectly fried and delicious but the accompanying sauce was lacking. The fish in the roll, nigiri and chirashi bowl were bland and just did not really stand out. The miso cod was a generous portion and cooked perfectly however the sauce was overly sweet and the filet had two pieces of bone in it still. For the most part the server was nice and we were fed. It was 1.5hr trek to get here from the East Bay and I don't believe it's worth your money nor will I be coming back. If you're ever in Sausalito, your best bet for best value is probably cioppino from Scoma's where it not only tastes good but you get a nice view too. read more

The owner was so friendly, during our wait, he even came over and chatted, explained to us the history of the kadomatsu plant for celebrating new years. The quality of the food is definitely five stars. However, a truthful suggestion from the take-out perspective is that the way the foods are packaged needs adjustment. When we received the paper bag, cold sushi containers were stacked together with hot udon soup container. The tempura box had no corners cut, so the steam trapped inside made the tempura pieces soggy by the time we were able to sit down and eat. If we were local, this lovely restaurant would be a frequent spot for us. The ambience looked romantic and cozy from the outside. And if we were regulars, I'm sure the greeter would have warmed up to us over time. Overall, still a very great restaurant. Would love to try the sit down experience next time. read more

We ordered the sashimi plate which comes with 10 pcs of fish (great quality), salmon citrus roll, warm mushroom salad & not sure if miso soups were complimentary but it was a great start to stay warm...aside from the hot sake. Everything was delicious & I liked how the cuts of sashimi weren't too thick. The roll was perfectly 'bite sized', not too big like at most restaurants. To celebrate our 6 month anniversary, my boyfriend and I booked a reservation at Sushi Ran on a whim. We were seated fairly quickly in the intimate restaurant and got straight to ordering as we were both pretty hungry. Everything looked delicious, but we ultimately settled on a few dishes to share, namely, the negitoro roll, the sashimi plate, and a miso glazed black cod. For a sushi restaurant, I expected to like the raw dishes the most. Though, surprisingly, the cod was the standout winner for me. When paired with the marinated green beans and their perfectly cooked rice, Sushi Ran's cod shines with flavor without being cloyingly sweet or overly saturated in glaze. The raw dishes were also great as expected. But, I wish more deluxe cuts of fish came with the sashimi plate especially considering the steep price point. For drinks, I ordered the What's The Rush which is the Sushi Ran's rendition of a Moscow Mule. My boyfriend opted for the more sophisticated sake flight and enjoyed the experience. As college students though, we can admit that our palates aren't refined enough to really appreciate the nuances of the individual sakes. The spinach salad alone is an absolute slam dunk.... but there are other factors. Despite a very affable wait staff, the service was very slow. After the salad, things took a turn for the bland with the mushroom salad, a surprise given the overall attention to detail. Luckily, the cauliflower redeemed the meal, but I ding them for the dearth of vegetarian sushi rolls and lack of imagination in the few that there are. Reliable neighborhood stalwart. IMO, best thing on the menu isn't even sushi, but rather the cod. It is excellent -- comes out super warm, extremely buttery, and bursting with miso flavor. Served only with arugula, it's a minimalist dish because it can get away with it. So good. For sushi, most recently ordered the kaisen futo maki, which isn't my understanding of a futo maki in the traditional sense, but is a wide roll filled with a few fresh fish. It's excellent if you like a big, fish-forward roll without all the sauce, toppings, etc that often accompany "special" rolls. Ambiance is super pleasant -- tucked away on Caledonia, the "local's main drag" of Sausalito, it's good for a casual dinner or something a little more upscale, if you're looking for that. Admittedly, you don't need to ever leave San Francisco if you're looking for good sushi. Options abound. But if you're trying to spend an evening in Sausalito and need somewhere to eat, this place is a must-hit. read more

I ordered the eggplant with miso, which was very sweet, but delicious had a few shishito in there. I also ordered a 49 roll which is not on the menu anymore but they made it for me and the salmon was paper thin; imagine thinner than lox you get for bagels and had a really dark red color so I'm not really sure what kind of salmon that was -it's not what they usually use -which I was very disappointed about, it tasted OK but not worth $22! The final thing I ordered was an order of Saba and an order of Uni which was OK. The don't give you a pair of sushiT- just a single bite, but these fish were very fresh. The ambience was all right. They sent me in the bar side which is not my favorite, but at least it was spacious, and Service was very attentive but maybe a little confusing because sometimes the second person would talk to me but then disappear after I ask them a question or needed something. It is very pricey so the sushi not delivering is not a good measure. Made me want to fly home to Japan to correct my palate on that one weird sushi roll. I can't help but to Discount the stars for what i was served. Maybe if I bought the $52 sushi plate I'd feel different but I was not going to order a $52 lunch although in the end my lunch with tea was about $65. It still has that specialness but I'm not sure about the sushi rolls. Trash, the bartender has the personality of a cucumber and the "wagyu" they gave us was microwaved and cold then they "refried" it the bartender said it was a restaurant term and it was literally just an over cooked filet. The owner and my Pop have known each other for decades and it was a pleasure getting to talk to him. You feel a sense of zen coming into the restaurant--quiet, minimalistic, with the sushi bar well lit and viewable. All service staff were attentive, respectful, and very personable. We were checked in by all, laughs shared, and food and drinks flowing. Each item on Sushi Tan's menu is well thought out, carefully crafted, and beautifully presented. We started our evening off with a bowl of Awase Miso and Chilled Edamame. The miso was basic but good--slightly salty and warm. The edamame was fantastic with the thick sea salt flakes. My Mom got the Chirashi and my Pop ordered their Noodles choosing Soba as his option. Both raved and fell in love with their dishes. For my dish I was curious about their rolls, going for the Kaisen Futo-Maki. My mouth is still salivating. The fish melted in my mouth, extremely fresh, and was of high quality; I could eat this roll on repeat. My Pop surprised us with Omakase as well. Each nigiri was carefully curated by the sushi chefs. Simply divine, elegant, and appetizing. Yes we were stuffed but dessert was a must. The dessert menu isn't posted so be sure to ask the waiter if interested! Complimentary ice cream to celebrate the special occasion was well received by my Mom. My Pop enjoyed his Miso Cheesecake stating it was one of the best.
