Considering that this restaurant is on the Michelin guide, I was incredibly disappointed. The rolls were good but not fabulous. The chawanmushi was such a disappointment!! Best sushi in Sausalito. Used to be the best sushi in the Bay Area - not anymore. They were not defeated by other sushi places, they survived Covid and staffing issues are eroding their reputation. Still good food but slipping in the kitchen with less than stellar fare that used to blow your socks off. Driving up, the ambience is beautiful and very clean. You can see into the dining area where the sushi chefs make things happen! They look like they were so focused on their craft. Pick up was clean and seamless. I get home... The role is beautifully presented and looks extremely fresh. YES, it was. As I lifted one piece near my mouth I could smell the seasoning of the sushi rice - LEGIT and well-balanced. The fish is amazingly fresh and melts in your mouth. Two all-gender bathrooms available. Food & drinks: Grilled Hamachi Kama- fish was cooked so soft. The ponzu sauce that came with it added so much flavor and depth to the dish. It was a delicious pairing. Would come again for the ponzu sauce. Creamy scallop roll- scallop in the roll was fresh. The golden tobiko on top makes the roll shine like diamonds. I recently visited this sushi restaurant and was extremely disappointed with the service we received. Despite being the first party to arrive, we were seated last as dozens of people who had reservations were seated ahead of us. The staff was cold, distant, and unprofessional, making for a terrible dining experience. I understand that the restaurant gives priority to people with reservations vs walk ins. That makes sense for a crowded restaurant but we were there before the opening time and the restaurant had plenty of tables set aside for walk ins where they could have seated us. And if they still decided to have no common sense, they still could have common courtesy and explain that I would have to wait another 10 to 15 minutes if I wanted a table and I would have left. The service lacked any kind of empathy and true respect for my family and children. We ended up leaving the restaurant without even ordering any food. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and give it a 1-star rating, particularly for people with families or any sense of common human respect. read more

Such a treat to dine here on a weekday lunch date! They had ample of seating in their courtyard and it was gorgeous. On a sunny day, the courtyard blocks the wind so it's actually warmer than the street. Food is delicious as usual and it's basically as good as it gets in Covid time. Definitely a 4.5 to 5 Yelp star restaurant for us. It is really tough to pivot for any business during these COVID times but we are impressed with the quality we received in a box for take out. The food is exceptional and prepared with pride. You can taste the quality with every bite. Our favorite piece by far is the Myazaki Wagyu topped with caviar. Their ginger beef was surprisingly delicious and not something we typically order. I ate every last bite and not really doing rice this month as a dietary restriction but I could not help having rice with the sauce! Their toro is very fresh as well as their uni. Cannot say anything we ordered was not in the highest of quality. The toffee cake is lighter than a sticky toffee pudding but incredibly delicious and a highlight of our take out order. The take out was so good for us that we returned for dinner on our last night of our staycation here in Sausalito. We will definitely return in the future and bring the family once it is safer for our high risk loved ones. The wifey and I slay sushi globally and have had the honor to eat at the Jiro Dreams of Sushi restaurant in the subway of Japan. Catch Jiro on Netflix it will show you how serious my wife is about our Sushi. Our favorite of all time is Sushi Kashiba an apprentice of Jiro located in Seattle. We were seated promptly, with a smiling host (believe me, it's really rare these days), she was accommodating to my cake box I had and also suggested using their candles as well (again not common these days). We visited Sausalito for the first time after a few days in San Francisco. Sushi Ran was on top of the list for restaurants to visit as I saw it in a few different reviews. We loved the food so much that we came back again the next day to try other items on the menu. First the service was excellent and everyone was so kind and friendly. We even had the owner surprise us during our meal on the first night. Two of our favorites was the Miyazaki A5 beef which had incredible texture and a clean finish on the palate. The ikura chawanmushi was a beautiful dish to eat and to feed your eyes with. The texture was pleasant and had wonderful flavors of the sea. One of the few places in Sausalito that isn't an overpriced tourist trap. Sure, it's a tourist trap and it's expensive, but it actually lives up to the price. There's enough comments about the sashimi and the nigiri that I'll just mention a couple of tips: the line is first come first serve, so you want to either show up 5m to 10m early or after the initial line has cleared out. It takes 5m to 15m for the line to clear out after opening, no point in showing up right after opening just to wait in line for 15m. Also, some of the rolls are really good, the citrus roll is worth trying even if you're normally into sashimi and nigiri sushi. read more

Admittedly I haven't been to the top sushi spots in SF city for comparison, but after living in NYC and Japan and being an overall sushi addict - I am proud to say my 2nd favorite sushi restaurant is in my current home of Marin County. (The top spot is reserved for almost any of the local sashimi street stalls in Tsukiji market but it's hard to beat the most delicious uni you'd wake up at 4am for) I first heard of Sushi Ran from my sister's hubby who proclaimed the food was worth both the money and the 3-4hr roundtrip drive (pending traffic) from South Bay. We decided to sit at the sushi bar for a date night and were blown away by each piece the chef prepared. I was particularly obsessed with any zuke (red wine cured) nigiri and my husband was in heaven with the multiple uni options. The sake list is awesome and service was great in recommending pairings, and the sake flights are quite fun to indulge if you don't want to make any decisions! We have returned several times with friends and family - usually sitting on the covered patio area which is cozy and casual albeit a bit dark. I definitely prefer the sushi bar experience but it's not ideal for conversation when you have more than 2 people. Other non sushi menu items we have enjoyed: miso eggplant with pickled radish, black cod, trumpet mushrooms with onion marmalade and definitely all the desserts - especially the black sesame ice cream is a necessity! read more

True story: every time I was out of town during the world series, the Dodgers lost. So my friends decided they couldn't let me go home until the game was over, and kept me captive at Sushi Ran. And I'm not even mad about it. Sushi Ran is one of those places where you can really start appreciating the art of sushi. The menu has a good assortment and the preparation of fish is quite good. I usually judge a sushi place by their tuna and tamago. If they have otoro or chu toro, then I must have it. At this visit, the toro and tamago were excellent. We also enjoyed a roll, some tempura and hamachi kama. All were cooked perfectly and satisfied our bellies. So glad the Dodgers lost so I could go home. Mediocre and overpriced Ate there last night. Family of 4 adults, one child. The food: we've had sushi all over Asia and the $70 premium platter was just average. The fish was store-bought quality and they used a member of the kitchen staff to present (who didn't know the names of the all the fish!) The plating was boring and you could even see some of the fish was dry. Very underwhelming. The wagyu steak, 5oz at almost $50 was just ok. I asked it cooked to chef's preference which the waiter said was rare/medium rare but it kept cooking and the last slice was medium by the time I got to it. Should've come rare. The same vegetables were on Every plate we ordered- broccolini, cauliflower and purple yam. Why no more variety? The yams were room temp and the broccolini Way over salted. The Brussels sprout appetizer was tiny shavings in a small bowl. Oily and over salted. We didn't even finish. Chicken dish for our child was weird. Supposed to be grilled but was smothered in a strange miso-ish sauce that seemed to have a thickener. We don't drink so $290-way was overpriced (our teen had 2 Shirley Temples and they charged for the second-$8.50 for both.) I last went to Sushi Ran about 15 years ago and still recall that meal. I used to really love sushi ran and I'm gutted to give it a poor review when it used to be my favorite sushi place in the bay area. I used to live in NY and whenever I visited, I would make a reservation for omakase at the bar. The menu was always exciting and the chefs were engaging. The price was good and omakase always came with fresh wasabi. I moved here in 2020 and my past 4 trips were severely disappointing. While fish quality is still generally good, nothing is ever amazing anymore. Omakase comes out all at once leaving the rice cold and the flavors a little lack luster compared to eating everything freshly made, piece by piece. They now use horse radish in the omakase rather than real wasabi- a cost cutting measure with covid for sure. But couple the obvious decline in quality with increased pricing and now this establishment no longer really stands apart from others. I'm sad to strike this place off my go-to list. Maybe I'll try again next year to see if things get better but I really doubt it will. read more

4.5 stars It's been a month since my bf and I came back from Japan, avoiding Japanese food up until now because we knew we would be disappointed with quality and price. I'm very happy to say that Sushi Ran has ignited my Japanese cravings again with the food quality and clean modern ambiance. Setting: After a hike at Muir Woods, we craved Japanese food and ended up here. It was a short drive to Sausalito, parking was easy for a Friday night, and we were able to snag a table for two pretty quickly. There are actually TWO separate buildings, serving the same food, but I guess a different atmosphere in each. Restrooms are outside both buildings in the cold, by the way. Bring your jacket. Food: I loved the clean, crisp, single sheet menus. I'm assuming they print new ones out everyday since there wasn't a wrinkle or stain in sight. We ordered: -Clam miso soup: definitely hit the spot on this cold day. My bf was sad he got 3 clams and I got 5. It was a larger bowl than expected, and the clams are rather large, so no biggie. - 6 piece nigiri: included shrimp, salmon, hamachi, tuna, and I think chef's choice of other two. Delicious and great quality. - Cod: Mmm, definitely order this. This was a mutual favorite dish, though pricey for portion size at $30. It is almost perfection, just a tad bit salty. But that's why there are veggies served next to it (kale and spinach) - Trumpet mushrooms: I love mushrooms so these were delicious to me - Creamy scallop roll ($13): miso aioli, tobiko, and avocado - Kaisen futo-maki roll ($19): tuna, salmon, hamachi, ikura, hotate (Japanese scallop), 2 other chef's choices, shiso, cucumber, and kombu wrap. Yeah, this one packs a punch, and I admire the amount of work and effort that comes with this roll. -Matcha dessert with ice cream and red bean: beautifully plated, fresh, and delicious Drinks: they have a wonderful selection of sake. We chose a 16oz serving and my bf liked it. Overall, a wonderful restaurant for date night as the quality and presentation of food is excellent. Prices can add up, but it isn't bad for the right occasion. As for attire, most people were dressed nicely, while we were in our hiking attire. We were treated the same nonetheless.
