    Tempura Udon broth
    J T.

This place is 'fine'. We ordered a number of things; sashimi, maki rolls, some appetizers (tako yaki) etc and my main was the tempura udon. I don't eat shrimp, and usually most places are happy to sub the more expensive shrimp for a couple extra veggie tempura instead. The chef decided they (would not) do this for unexplained reasons. Ok fine. Maybe inventory is very tightly controlled etc. but the soup itself was just ok. Not a lot going on in the broth. Mostly cabbage and one lonely and very tiny broccoli. They ended up giving me one extra broccoli tempura in the end. Side note, I did notice that the tempura oil probably needed changed due to the flavour of the batter. Sockeye salmon sashimi was fresh and tasty. Tako yaki was also pretty good. But I wouldn't recommend the udon for the price it is as it was very plain.

Amazing sushi! Cute little place that looks like it's got it's take out business down. We enjoyed the spinach goma-ae (nice sauce flavor), chicken karaage (a bit dry), sockeye salmon pressed sushi (amazing), and some rolls (all delicious-soft shell crab and the volcano roll were so good). Didn't leave any room for dessert, but maybe next time!

I highly recommend this restaurant. Small but cozy, nice ambience. The staff was very attentive! The food was absolutely delicious and the rolls are very big! We were a party of 8 and we were very pleased with our food. I will be coming back for sure to try more items in the menu.

The lunch sets are really good value for money in the $20 range with a lot of variety of items in the set. The california rolls were surprisingly large and were actually 8 rolls (4 rolls stacked in two rows) The tempura had the perfect amount of crunch and was very fresh and not soggy at all. The sashimi was high quality and delicious

We ordered a few rolls, and everything was tasty. Service was good and so was the ambiance. Staff is friendly. Not the best oshi (green leaf and minami are better) in Vancouver but it's still good. The seafood yaki soba had a lot of seafood in it, and it was good as well.

We were looking for an impromptu sushi spot and found Sushi Nova. We tried the salmon aburi oshi, Rocky MT roll and Tataki roll. They were all delicious and service was quick. They have tons of special rolls to choose from and there is also a good amount of seating inside.

Stellar. Out of this world. As its name implies, Sushi Nova truly deserves all the stars! My lunch there today was remarkable and I am still stuffed hours later. I ordered the HANA Teishoku ($16.95), which comes with 6pcs of sashimi, 3pcs of nigiri, and a California Roll. Like the other lunch sets, it is also served with 2 okazu (side dishes), miso soup, salad, and tempura. Now, I've had my fair share of lunch sets before, but this is perhaps one of the best ones I've ever had. What distinguishes Sushi Nova's from its counterparts are its okazu and tempura. Let's start with the okazu. Mine was an ebi mayo and an agedashi tofu; both Japanese classics came with their own incredible twists. The ebi mayo was accompanied by a single broccoli and coated in a roasted sesame dressing, lending a wonderfully creamy umami flavour. Likewise, the agedashi tofu was topped off with cubed spicy tuna sashimi to tickle the taste buds. I was actually very surprised by this addition as I initially thought the cubes were fried bits soaked in the sauce. I ended up rationing out my okazu, just so I could have them as my final bites. Looking at the menu, it seems like there are 17 options of okazu, but it will always be these two. Now for the tempura! My gosh, I am so used to getting zucchini as a tempura piece that I was shocked to see it replaced with kabocha (Japanese squash). Unlike the blandness of a zucchini, the kabocha was so decadent with its velvetiness and roasted undertones, the latter of which was my favourite part. The prawn tempura and yam tempura, while delicious, could only bow down to this unbelievable kabocha tempura. Wow. As for the rest of my lunch set, I have no complaints whatsoever. Everything was fresh, tasty, and well-balanced! Great value overall. The service at Sushi Nova was also great. I actually chuckled when the server placed by lunch set "upside down" (with the tempura closest to me) and another server quickly told them to rearrange it. This was such a cute moment and one that highlights the attention to detail required at this restaurant. Though the restaurant was empty when we first arrived, it filled up not long after. Moreover, there was a steady stream of takeout orders being fulfilled. Throughout all these customer interactions, I could see how courteous the servers were. In fact, the same server that corrected the positioning of my lunch set also gave a customer a free miso soup when there had been a mistake on the restaurant's end. Finally, during COVID times, we must talk safety precautions because Sushi Nova is a restaurant that I would definitely dine in again. Rest assured that all staff here are wearing masks, the tables are spaced apart and sanitized, there is a plexiglass panel at the front, and there is a separate window for pick-up. Five stars all around for Sushi Nova!

    Nagasaki udon

Amazing food! I got the Nagasaki udon and nothing could have prepared me for the size. It was huge. It was so tasty, it had scallops and shrimp and mussels and cabbage and the cost was very reasonable. The yam tempura was the best I've ever had. The servers were nice and the tea was lovely.

I ordered my food via Uber Eats requesting in the notes no wasabi no ginger and they included it in both containers. Disappointed in the lack of attention to my order, it was also 20 minutes late. Wish I had a better experience. :(

The setting is gorgeous, right next to the water, and the service and wine list befits a Michelin restaurant. They aren't able to sit bigger parties next to a window though. The sushi is spectacular. They specialize in Aburi and that does not disappoint. We had four: - Miku roll, with torched fish eggs, the texture and flavour are incredible. - surf and turf, this has beef tataki and da really different but good flavour - salmon and saba Oshi Aburi. My kids favourite. The flavour - it just melts in your mouth and it is sooo good. The flavour is what really stands out. It's not a huge portion. All the appetizers are excellent. In particular our group loved the tofu salad. My daughter says it's the best salad she ever had. Ebi fritters were outstanding too. Crunchy and delish but somehow light at the same time. The brussel sprouts were a bit spicy. Spinach Gomae has an amazing flavour. The desserts are great too. The banana mousse in particular was sublime. You can't go wrong here for your next occasion.

Food was fine, but sadly their rice was slightly undercooked and under-seasoned in their sushi. Ive definitely had it better here, so they are just inconsistent. We had the aburi salmon, aburi shrimp, aburi nigiri combo and all with same problem. Seasoning on the fish was on point. though. Also we ordered the sablefish, octopus, soba noodle. These were all pretty good. They are very expensive though with very small portions. They are priced like a fine dining establishment but the dining experience felt more casual. After $300 for a meal for 4 without drinks, we all left still hungry. And given the abundance of high quality sushi in this city, this place is disappointing and way overpriced. The inconsistent quality though is inexcusable if they charge this much. They do have many items catering to a very western palate and clearly this place targets cruise ship tourists and convention-goers which I suspect is part of the reason their pricing is so high. If youve never really had sushi before, this place is a nice introduction in a nice environment with good service and plenty of non-sushi dishes as well. If you're looking for serious sushi then look elsewhere for much better quality, variety, and value.

I completely understand that the space inside is limited, and waiting can be unavoidable. What made the experience less comfortable was not the wait itself, but the way it was communicated. Being asked to wait outside felt a bit cold and impersonal. In situations like this, a more friendly explanation, a small sign at the door, or even a simple system that lets customers know when to come back could make the wait feel much more considerate and human. Running a small restaurant is not easy, especially in today's economic climate. I truly believe that with a warmer, more customer-oriented approach, this place could do very well. The oshi sampler (their signature pressed sushi) looked tidy and well-composed, and the textures were clean, though the flavors didn't quite pop the way I'd hoped. The roll we ordered was fine, nothing to write home about. Happy hour pricing makes this an accessible way to try Minami's menu. Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays). Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.
