    Chicken Karage

Solid Japanese food in Pleasanton - we stopped by yesterday (Friday) around 6 pm and snagged the last parking spot and table, as the place was packed with diners and others waiting for takeout. We started with drinks, miso soup and steamed edamame, and enjoyed those while waiting on our other appetizers, Pork Katsu and Chicken Karage, and entrées - Tempura Udon soup, Lion King roll, and Just Dragon roll. We enjoyed our food and finished everything! Our favorites were the Miso Soup, Pork Katsu, and Just Dragon roll. We were not impressed by either the Tempura Udon soup or the Lion King roll. Service was excellent and the bill was about $100 before tax and tip. There were several tables and parking spots available when we finished our meal around 7 pm. Happy to return, but if we are craving udon soup, we may give other establishments a try.

We were a big group and they were able to accommodate us. We called ahead of time and they let us know, that our group will be in two separate tables. This setup was perfect, one table with kids, the other for the adults. We had to servers taking our orders and we didn't wait long for our meal. The rolls were huge and flavorful. Love the mounds of ginger and wasabi they provide. Service was great, the servers checked in on us often and cleared plates. Decent parking lot as well.

Great! The 49ers roll is probably my favorite Nice place, clean, quick, and the people are nice!

Chubby Chubby & the nigiri + sashimi + 2 roll set (forgot what it's called)

Always love coming here with my friends and family. Staff is always really nice, food is good quality for a fair price as well. I always get the Chubby Chubby - it is a bigger roll than the others but perfect when I'm feeling extra hungry.

One word describes this place : authentic. The sashimi was fresh and truly a delicacy. The spicy tuna roll was more modern but still a good addition to the traditional dishes. The grilled edamame is worth the extra calories lol The staff is more reserved than other places but they are very polite, respectful and cordial. It is more of a family friendly establishment which makes sense because Pleasanton is a lovely (mostly family) neighborhood but I still enjoy going on my own. I mentioned this because I sometimes like to go and converse about the history of the place etc and as a chatty person whenever I come here I take it as my meditation and appreciation time and just tune in on the flavor.

I've always enjoyed this place and in the past would've given it an easy 5 stars. I feel like recently the quality of the food has decreased a bit, with an inversely proportional increase in price. The service is generally good, although at times it has been difficult to get the servers attention e.g. on their phone. I like their seating but there is no outdoor option sadly. I also miss seeing some of the original staff, which I haven't seen in a while. Perhaps the ownership has changed.

Everything was amazing!! The sushi was so fresh and full of flavor, and the tempura was perfectly crispy without being greasy. The miso soup was warm and comforting, and everything looked beautiful on the table. The service was quick and super friendly, and the whole vibe was just right. Definitely a place I'll be coming back to everything was perfect from start to finish!

Food was fishy, the service was at bare minimum. Drinks were not refilled. I had mentioned to them that the baked lion king roll is fishy and doesn't taste fresh at all. I would tip high if the food and service were excellent. Despite all this I still tipped them appropriately based on my experience but surprisingly I saw my card statement was charged with a 30% tip! Waaay above the tipping norm! I did not authorize that charge so this is fraudulent! People who choose to dine here, I advise you to check your statements & receipts. Make sure the tip you wrote is accurate because this restaurant is dishonest. It can happen to anyone, even from a small business like this unfortunately. And I always choose to support small businesses but this one won't be having mine in the future. And I called the restaurant to let them know about this fraudulent and unethical matter.

Is soft shell crab on the menu as a meal or appetizer?

Yes, you can definitely get the soft shell crab as an appetizer, as a meal I think it would be unsubstantial. Why not order three of the apps and a side of rice, sounds good to me!

I tend to shop nearby and have seen the restaurant but haven't been in the area during lunchtime until today. I did learn they also have lunch specials on Saturdays too, so I will be back with my husband next time. I walked in and ordered, and the lady was so nice and welcoming. My order was packed and ready to go without much of a wait, which was nice. It didn't take long, so it's very helpful for people on a time crunch. I got the 3 item bento box with katsu chicken, California roll, and sashimi. It also came with miso soup, salad, and rice. I got it to go, so I was happy the soup was included because I notice some restaurants don't always include soup on togo orders. The katsu chicken was light and seasoned nicely, and the katsu sauce tasted a little different than normal, so maybe it's freshly made. I wasn't a fan of the California roll only because I am not a fan of the whole roll chunks of imitation crab meat but it wasn't a full deal breaker. The sashimi tasted fresh with a nice, soft, buttery texture. I still think about their sashimi at times, it's up there with some of the best pieces of fish I've eaten.

My wife ordered sukiyaki and I ordered a 3 item bento box. I had gyoza, mixed tempura and chicken katsu with a salad, white rice and miso soup. I liked all three items in my bento: the gyoza didn't have a crispy bottom but good flavor, chicken katsu was tender with a nice deep fried coating and the tempura was fried nicely (light and crispy). My wife liked the flavor of the sukiyaki and the ingredients. My son's wife had a sashimi donburi with fresh fish and my son went with a three item bento beef teriyaki, mixed tempura and three piece nigiri. He said the Nigiri was fresh, tempura was fried nicely, not oily and the tempura was tasty. The Miso soup and salad were fresh and tasty. We will definitely go back. For a wide selection with fresh food and prepared after you order, give Kaki Sushi a try. Staff is very attentive.

I came in around 6pm and when I walked in there was 1 other table there and not busy. I would say it's a small spot that seats less than 50 people but it was nice and clean. I decided to get two rolls and a 6 piece nigiri that comes with a hand roll. Gorilla Roll - 9/10. I'm always a sucker for seared rolls. The salmon being seared gives it extra sweetness and the siracha mayo actually had a nice kick it to it and wasn't just sweet. The fried shallots on top added nice texture being crunchy with extra flavor. This was my favorite roll. Rosewood Roll - 8/10. You can taste that the fish is fresh. If you like salmon and tuna I would get this roll. What I liked about it as well was the spicy crab on top which carried a small amount of spice but adds to the flavor. Moriwase - 9/10. It comes with 6 nigiri and a hand roll. Again the fish is fresh and has good flavor. The portion was normal, definitely not small. The nigiri comes with a brush of soy sauce so no need to dip, but feel free to. I just wish it had some more wasabi cause I didn't taste any. It came with a spicy tuna hand roll which I liked a lot because it had a good kick. Service was great even though I was the only one in there after the table before me left but the lady was very nice and attentive. She even offered some home made dessert that was packaged in a cute box after having some small convo. I talked to the sushi chef and he's been making sushi for over 15 years and I could tell that he puts some passion in his craft. He told me everyone says the fish is fresh but he really tries to make the flavor known which I think he executed well. They also get their fish flown/delivered on Tuesdays/Thursday. If you're in the area I would recommend trying this spot. It's definitely a safe option and I'll be coming back to try the other items.

That said, phone sounds blasting from the kitchen does seem a bridge too far for me personally. It's just not professional and totally kills the possibility of an enjoyable meal. Service was friendly, but on the slow side. The atmosphere is super informal, featuring posters of food that is not actually on the menu. Food wise, it was OK. The miso soup was pretty expensive. The best dish by far was the futo-maki roll. Really good flavor for a vegetarian roll. The 'fresh crab' in the other roll we ordered was not good. Rice being IMO the most important element in sushi was executed well, but my chirashi had all the fish served fridge cold and with pretty rough, haphazard cuts. For the overall price of the experience, it just doesn't seem worth it.

The only difference is that they largely moved to just serving dine-in orders in plastic to-go boxes. Coming back here after so many years made me realize that this is the place where I think they do the Lion King roll the best. Almost every other place I've tried has a weird twist to their recipe. The restaurant setting was fairly plain, but I noticed that they offered a good amount of seating inside for dine-in guests. Was quoted 15-30 minutes online, but it was ready when I arrived about 10 minutes after ordering. Then I discovered that the order was wrong. I was given edamame by mistake, instead of egg rolls. No apology given, just confusion (one worker questioning another worker on why she would do that), but they assured me they would make the correct order and it would take 5 more minutes. In reality, I had to wait an additional 10-15 minutes, but at least they fixed the issue. Staff was friendly. Btw, the menu states that the egg rolls are made with a mix of veggies and meat. But these were filled with vegetables only, no meat. Taste was okay, and the eggroll wrapper was thicker than I'd prefer. I'm used to the king and queen eggroll spots where the product has more size and better flavor with a light and crispy exterior (I know plenty of these in the south bay). It wasn't bad, but I probably wouldn't get this again at Fat Fish Sushi. On the other hand, the lion king roll was really good, made with quality ingredients and prepared perfectly. Too bad it got cold since it was ready 15 minutes before the rest of my order.

And 8pc were only $40. Salmon rolls (salmon salmon) and (orange ocean) were both good. Nice citrus hit in orange ocean but doesn't overpower - salmon salmon roll had good crisp and umami from the fried skin. The sashimi platter was solid - nothing that blew my mind but it was pretty good quality fish, only minor complaint was it was cut into oddly shaped chunks and not consistent in texture between each bite Also they gave a LOT of plum wine, not skimpy at all!
