Two of us got seats right away at the bar, but the remaining three continue to wait another 10 minutes and then decided to go elsewhere. The two of us who got bar seats ordered unagi don and several of the BBQ skewers and a side order of rice. The unagi don tasted good, but the portion was kind of small for the price. While each tapas skewer was not particularly expensive, the prices quickly added up. The skewers were quite good though, and I particularly enjoyed the zucchinis stuffed with mentaiko. The grilled scallops and oyster mushrooms were also excellent. The restaurant serves a diverse range of Japanese foods and you can also get sushi, handrolls, ramen, teriyakis, etc. Service was attentive at the bar. I would like to give the restaurant another try as the menu looked promising. Hopefully no more long waits next time.

I tried the 49er's Roll and it was just okay. I think what made it not as great as I expected was that the roll tasted dried out, and it seemed like it was cut sloppily too. The roll itself was $17 which made it a bit more disappointing since it felt like the quality didn't match the price point. Service was great, but unfortunately the food just didn't hit.

Since the owner is actively involved in the day-to-day operation, you can tell they do an excellent job of maintaining consistent quality. The tempura here is especially impressive. It's always light, crispy, and clean--not greasy at all--and everything is cooked beautifully. This isn't just based on one visit, either. Whenever we're craving sushi, this is the place we keep coming back to, and the quality has remained consistently good every single time. There may be more beautiful or more well-known sushi restaurants, but it's surprisingly hard to find a place that serves food as clean, fresh, and consistently well-prepared as this one.
