Small intimate sushi place with good service and traditional Japanese food. 5 stars!!

First timer here. My fiance decided to treat me to sushi as we haven't had any quite some time. To start, salted edamame on the house is what I've grew up being used to, and seems like a lot of places don't do anymore. Shinkai does-- automatic plus for me. I ordered the Sushi Crafter Box and salivated as it being walked over to my table. It looked so satisfying that I didn't even want to dig in. But of course I had to. It was incredible! I normally don't love fatty tuna because the texture can be inconsistent and veiny but it was soft and not veiny at all! My fiance ordered 2 rolls, and a sashimi appetizer and loved it all. We were able to share everything we ordered and both left very satisfied. The service was fantastic, waters being refilled without having to ask and the restaurant was clean. It is a bit small unfortunately but that's just to say, expect wait times! read more

Shinkai Sushi is a very busy restaurant during meal time. My friend and I learned that the hard way when we arrived at about 6:30 pm. Fortunately I was the first one on the waitlist. Parking is a little tight as this little strip mall is quite popular. The restaurant itself was quite small with about 15 tables available. The sushi chefs were tucked in a small corner adjacent to the one coed restroom. Ordering is quite interesting where a QR code was used. You made your choices and submitted it to the kitchen. One major issue is that there is no way to tell when our order was coming. After about a 25 minute wait (as I said busy meal time) our order started to arrive. We ordered a Hamachi Kama, Dragon Roll, Orange Ocean Roll, cheesecake and black sesame ice cream. Everything was tasty and very nice. The prices were very reasonable compared to other restaurants. It would seem that the restaurant could be understaffed. read more

Food? Amazing!! I definitely found a new go-to sushi spot in the East Bay. I loved how vast their menu was and how fresh the sushi actually tasted. We ended up coming a second time later in the week for takeout when it wasn't as busy as the day we decided to stop by. Some highlights: + Salmon Salmon! ($17): As a salmon lover, this roll was literallyyyy perfect. It had salmon skin, salmon, and salmon roe. The sushi was well constructed and tasted great. + Kaisen Don: SUCH amazing quality!! I loved how buttery the uni was and how light the scallop was especially. I'm also a sucker for seared salmon so this was just great all around. Our food came out fairly quickly which was greatly appreciated after a long wait. The main con of our experience -- we visited for a Father's Day dinner and were the second party on their whiteboard waitlist, but we still ended up waiting a little over an hour for a table. Unfortunately, our name got erased from the waitlist twice due to staff mix-ups. Since most parties were waiting outside, we had one person from our group waiting inside to listen for our name. * The first time, I think the server mistook us for another party and erased our name. We let him know and he let us rewrite our name in it's original place. * The second time, he called our party's name, erased us from the board, and our friend immediately went outside to bring the rest of us inside. Before we could all walk in, another party of 6 (whose name was actually below ours on the waitlist) walked in first. We let the server know they weren't with us, but instead of acknowledging the mix-up, he said they had a reservation - even though he had just called our party's name and removed us from the waitlist. We ended up having to rewrite our name on the whiteboard, and there was never an apology for either mix-up. I think the process could've been handled much better by confirming which party was actually being seated instead of only calling names to people waiting inside, especially since most guests were waiting outside. -- Overall, I think the food was amazing but it was unfortunate that the service wasn't as great as expected. Tucked inside a strip mall, this is a small sushi restaurant. Call in ahead if your group is larger than 4 people. Menu is pretty big for a small operation. Our group order udon for the kids, a few rolls, an unagi don, a few nigiri orders, and a few of the sashimi sampler boxes. The food was ok and served our cravings. The sampler boxes were big enough for one hungry adult or two adults to share. The unagi don was the smallest don I've ever seen and for $25 it felt overpriced. The rolls were comparable to any other restaurant. The host and waiter were friendly and took our orders and brought out water and tea quickly. Our server on the other hand had this look of disdain. When we asked for a fork for the kids or more ice for water, he looked rather annoyed. read more

Tucked in the corner of the plaza, first floor! It's quite small but very cozy! We came in a Friday night but didn't have to wait too long. We ordered Ikageso Karagee but the order came out wrong twice - we received the grilled whole squid instead but didn't want to wait so we just left it alone. dry udon was not worth it. the tempura was very good and crispy. we tried the poke in the cup, it was small but yummy. I also tried the albacore tataki..it only said scallions and didn't indicate there's be fried garlic which was overpowering. the service was mediocre, had to ask for water, check, sauces, to go box. Very solid sushi and Japanese food joint - above average fish quality for a pretty good value (all things considered) What impressed me was the omakase, the fish was notably more flavorful and had higher fat content. Flavors and seasoning all balanced well, they put shiso leaf bits in between under the typically gamier fish and rice. Savory roe bits dot the top of some of the stronger tasting fishes. And 8pc were only $40. Salmon rolls (salmon salmon) and (orange ocean) were both good. Nice citrus hit in orange ocean but doesn't overpower - salmon salmon roll had good crisp and umami from the fried skin. Cute little space in the plaza. Order from the app and they bring out- be careful to order from 1 mobile if there is one bill, but can order from different phones to have separate bills if needed. They can combine but can get messy if they are busy of course. Parking - shared lot, can get busy! Bathroom- looks like single occupant bathroom towards the back of kitchen. Noticed it said dogs are allowed- they are not allowed (outside of service animals) - no outdoor seating or anything. Fish quality was good! We had a variety of things- I didn't take a pic of the chirashi but it was good! The only thing I wouldn't order again is the bluefin toro uni handroll with fried bits- it tasted a little stale to me and it was served a little late as the seaweed was more on the soggy side. Located in a plaza where parking can get pretty full, but if you circle around a bit you can usually find a spot. The interior decor is fun but elevated and gives the place its own personality. The servers were really nice. The highlight though: The fish here was super fresh, especially the tuna, which really stood out. This unassuming restaurant located in a 2-story food building was a great find. We've walked passed by it before heading to the other restaurants but never chose it. It was our 2nd choice even today but that's going to change! We had the lunch specials: Salmon Teriyaki, Chicken Terriyaki, & Tonkatsu. We also decided to add-on the lunch special sides: tempura, salmon skin roll, & a California roll. For the price, it was an easy choce to makr. We didn't expect the sides to be full portions! The lunch plates came with miso soup, salad, & rice. I don't know how to describe it but the miso soup was super flavorful! It's the best I've had especially as part of a set meal. It set the tone for the rest of the dishes. The portions were generous for a lunch set meal & they were very delicious. The server was friendly, too. We stopped by after craving some sushi and found that they offered an omakase set that was pretty inexpensive. After looking at the menu, we decided to go for the nigiri premium set and the premium hand roll set. We also ordered the deep fried octopus legs! It was lightly deep fried with a tempura coating, and served with a slice of lemon for taste and this seasoned mayo sauce on the side. Upon arrival, we were luckily seated quite fast despite having 2 parties of 4 waiting for seats. Lucky us! The service was very attentive throughout the night as well. Overall, shinkai sushi is such a solid sushi place. Was in the area looking for dinner and a Tesla charger and sure enough, there is one nested right next to this sushi spot! We did have great sushi here, our only complaint was the table not getting bussed at all, and them not really returning. But, BUT, the sushi here was pretty damn good, especially the nigiri and even more specifically the tuna. They DO NOT play around with the amount of fish they stack on the nigiri, and all of the sushi was fresh and tasty. One thing I would avoid is the popcorn chicken / karaage. As great as the sushi was the karaage was admittedly tasteless, not even salt. This would benefit a ton from maybe some 5 spice. read more

Why 4 stars? It stinks that they repeat nigiri pieces which should never be the case. AND TWICE!! So I had 4 pieces of two fishes (that I didn't even ask for/for it to happen). Additionally, the fish had a ton of chewy tendon. Likewise it was strange that wasabi wasn't instantly included in the nigiri as this is the traditional standard in Japan... with the question of "Wasabi, OK?" Lunch sets are kind of sad... one main course, salad with heavy dressing, miso soup, and rice. There wasn't any fruit or pickles. Tonkatsu as the main course wasn't light and fluffy but instead dry and over seasoned (one can tell it's been in the fridge marinating in salt and pepper for too long). Prime set: I'm glad I ordered this instead of the standard due to the unagi roll vs California roll (although the unagi had a ton of bones). Again, disappointed with the repeated fish. Appreciate the well constructed/well mixed sushi rice and for providing fresh wasabi (which is an extra $2 on the side!). ***didn't make me sick afterwards which I tremendously appreciate*** SERVICE: hahaha my secretiveness of speaking in Mandarin was immediately broken by the server who responded in Mandarin. Located in the Ulferts Shopping Center in Dublin. This restaurant replaced a Japanese Izakaya, with an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant. I was initially attracted by their 8 piece sushi omakase, which was crafted by sushi artisans. Fresh cuts of fine quality fish, prepared meticulously for your enjoyment. My favorite piece was their fatty salmon, which was seared and topped with a wasabi onion sauce. Each cut of fish was generous compared to the rice, which allows you to taste the seasoning and freshness of the fish. We ordered the hamachi Kama (grilled yellow tail collar), and loved every bite of the fatty grilled fish. Lastly, we tried their chicken katsu(breaded chicken cutlet. This was an absolute treat! i've been loving these sushi boxes that are not only beautiful but also tend to have a couple of my favorite fish/seafood. This one is a little cheaper than most places in the south bay. Scallop, salmon belly, and tuna belly were all seared and tasted great. They gave TONS of seaweed, and I loved both the fresh wasabi, the kizami wasabi, and the sushi rice. 50/50 roll was simple but delicious. This restaurant has changed owner a few times and we used to love the Yakitori West but since they closed, the subsequent restaurants were bad. So happy that this one finally made it! This sushi place is a cozy restaurant that is a bang for your buck. Their portion size is crazy and all the fish is served fresh! From the two times we came here (since we're coming from San Jose) we ended up eating with our eyes. The staff was nice and everything came out very fast. Usually our favorite fish would be the tuna or salmon, however the hamachi here is one of the best hamachis we ever had. It's very lean yet still juicy with no fishy aftertaste. Same goes for the tuna and salmon, both had no fishy aftertaste with a beautiful bright color to them. Both of these fish was very butter and soft. The California roll was creamy and flavorful. The size of it was HUGE. A California at any restaurant is a must for us and this is one of our favorite California rolls. read more

First and foremost, I want to say that I chose this place from the recommendations of my fellow yelpers. This place was amazing, and I have been here 3 times in 1 week. Lol. As soon as we walked in, we could tell that it was a little warm inside, but it was okay. If I was going to dock them a point for anything, it would have been that. However, the customer service and the quality of the food made everything worth it. I forgot all about AC once i sat down. On 3 different days, we have 3 different servers and all of them delivered impeccable service to say the very least. Our water glasses were never empty and the food was DELICIOUS. We got a little bit of everything since we couldn't make up our minds. And Shinkai DELIVERED! Everything tasted so fresh and delicious. This will be our new sushi spot! In the mood for some sushi but couldn't bear the long wait a Kura, we found ourselves here for dinner. It's in the Ulfert's Center and we were thankful we were able to be seated immediately. It's a bit small inside but it was just fine. Between the three of us we got a chirashi don and 3 rolls- Rainbow, Salmon Salmon, and Orange Ocean. Average price these days for the rolls ($16-17) and the chirashi ($30). Overall a decent experience. The fish seemed fresh and the prices are reasonable. I just wished there was less soy sauce drizzled onto a couple of the rolls- the bottom of the roll really absorbed a lot of it and made it a bit too salty for my taste. There are other places in the area we like better for sushi but they are more expensive so this seems to be a good balance of quality and pricepoint. read more

Another lunch meet with my friend. We decided to have lunch here since it was too hot to have some soup. This is a nice spot for Japanese food but my only complaint would be how loud the music was. For some reason this is the second restaurant I've been to in Dublin where the music was kind of loud inside. Is this a trend now? For food, my friend ordered one of the sushi rolls. I believe it was the rainbow roll. For my mom and I we both got the salmon teriyaki. This is must for me whenever I try a new Japanese restaurant. Solid spot for sushi! The service was excellent as well. I had the; Chirashi bowl- Delicious assorted fish with equally delicious sushi rice. The rice had the perfect amount of vinegar added in and the fish was oh so smooth and soft. Tasted like it literally came fresh out of the waters. Sake Toro- Salmon belly and roe hand roll. Super delicious. The roe added a nice touch of flavor to the salmon and rice. It added a different savory-ness that complemented every component of the roll really well. Hokkaido Scallop- The scallop was probably my favorite out of everything I ate. I thought the salmon belly was soft, but the scallop? Imagine biting into a soft flan. I've been here throughout 3 iterations of restaurants, so it's interesting to see the changes. The Chicken teriyaki was unfortunately too dry. I have been wanting to try this relatively new place at Ulfert's Center. Dark wood tables and decor exude a warm modern zen vibe, nicely different from most Japanese restaurants. It was popular in the evening for the 3 day weekend. There were several couples as well as 2 large tables of extended families. We ordered a few appetizers and rolls: Japanese Fried Tofu Soft Shell Crab Super Spicy Roll Dragon Roll Salmon Salmon! Roll The appetizers were piping hot and tasty but the tofu wasn't as crispy as we were accustomed to. The Sushi was fresh and well presented but the rice was slightly too moist and not so densely packed. All the items were reasonable priced, perhaps nodding to their popularity. Last week was my second visit which wasn't as good as the first. I had the Chirashi bowl for takeout. I would say half of the sashimi was good with decent flavor and the other half not so much, very little flavor. The rice was ok, not great. The wasabi was weird with little sand sized granules in it. On my first visit I had Shinkai Omakase (3), Miso soup(3), Oyster Uni Shot (4), Bluefin Toro Handroll (4), and a Super Spice Roll (4). I would grade this visit 3.6 stars. read more

I came to Shinkansen Sushi twice in one week. The first visit was with a friend--we'd already had a snack before dinner, so we kept it light with a 50/50 roll, hamachi kama, and miso soup. It was good enough that I found myself craving more and decided to come back for my birthday to try their sushi properly. Come see the manager, Ken--he's welcoming and attentive. My spouse mentioned it was my birthday, and Ken immediately said he'd bring out a little surprise. We ordered the tonkatsu (which comes with miso soup), two different toro specials, a traditional sushi roll, and I went for their special omakase. It absolutely satisfied my birthday craving. The sushi grade is not over‑the‑top premium, but it's a solid staple--easy, convenient, and reliably hits the spot for flavor, portion, and price. The rice is made with vinegar, the way sushi rice should be. And thank you to Ken for the birthday dessert: a matcha cheesecake that was tasty and not very sweet. In Asian culture, when someone says a dessert isn't sweet, that's a compliment of the highest order. Solid tip and what they do right: order regular sushi you get regular wasabi. Order the specialty or premium sushi you get the premium fresh wasabi! I'm not hating as it is tough on business costs. Support your favorite stable local restaurants. If you want a place you can keep coming back to and truly enjoy, your support matters--it's what keeps these businesses alive. I just randomly picked a sushi place for lunch. Came across this highly rated sushi place and wanted to try. I was glad that I came. ;) I ordered 1) Ikura nigiri: very fresh and sweet, 4/5; 2) Hotategai nigiri: lightly sweet, 3.5/5, 3) Toro with Uni nigiri: tasty and sweet, 4/5, 4) California roll: fresh, 3.5/5, and 5) Tempura udon: the batter for the tempura is good, 3.5/5. I told the server that the table had soy sauce on it. He just wiped it using his fingers and said that he will come back to clean the table but he was too busy and forgot about it. Other than that, the server is attentive and apologized that they are short of staff. I love the food that I ordered. The service can be better. I will come back to try other sushi. This is a solid sushi spot. They don't have a huge selection of rolls but with the items they do serve, the quality is excellent. Fish is fresh and the rolls look very pretty. first tjme ever going and went after it opened up again around 5-530. was already getting pretty packed and busy. had high hopes from the amount of people in there. wasnt really comfortable with how close the seating was but it was a small restaurant in general. they offer tea and water once you are seated and edamame is served on the house. ordered lion king, patrick star and hellboy and my boyfriend and I's favorite was the hellboy. at one point before i began eating, one of the servers bumped into my arm slightly and apologized numerous times after i said it was fine then offered free miso soup. i think that is good service even though i didnt really mind since it didnt bother me as much as he thought it did. menu is pretty small but the rolls were pretty good read more

We got there around 6pm on Wednesday before Thanksgiving and only had to wait 10 mins, there were 7 of us so it wasn't too bad of a wait. The food was really good!
