The fried oysters were also a great size and came with two dipping sauces, which was a nice touch. The maze ramen was a big portion and even my toddler enjoyed it. The standout for me was the tempura ice cream--perfectly crisp with a thin, light shell. Service: Our server was friendly, efficient, and very accommodating. However, the host experience was frustrating. The Yelp waitlist wasn't working on a busy Friday night, which seemed to cause some disorganization. We were quoted a 25-minute wait for a party of three, but ended up waiting 45 minutes. During that time, multiple parties of three who arrived after us were seated first. When I checked in at 35 minutes, I was told we were "next," but that didn't seem to reflect what was happening. At 45 minutes, after checking again and explaining how long we'd been waiting, we were seated immediately. It was confusing and especially difficult with a hungry toddler. Parking: Parking can be tricky. The restaurant is located under an apartment complex with limited guest spots on the first floor of the garage. If it's full, you'll have to exit and find street parking (which is minimal) or park across Dublin Blvd and walk. Overall: This was close to a perfect experience. The avocado was creamy, the teriyaki was sweet/ umami, and the unagi was delicate and tender. I also appreciate that the pieces were perfectly bite- sized. I'm glad I tried this roll but would prefer to try a new one next time. -Klondike Express Roll (5/5): This roll was tasty and oh so colorful! Rolled with cucumber, crispy, tempura shrimp, fresh crab, and avocado w/ scallop mayo, this roll was an explosion of flavors. I love that it was garnished with bits of crunchy tempura and 3 flavors of tobiko for texture. The tobiko really added "wow factor" to the roll and each color had a subtle citrus flavor! My friend and I were trying to decipher the 3 flavors of tobiko and concluded yellow = lemon, green = lime, and orange = orange. This roll was fun and would definitely order again! -Chili Spider Salmon Roll (5/5): The Chili Spider was BEAUTIFUL and hands down my favorite roll of the night!! If I could give zero stars, I absolutely would. I've been a loyal Amakara customer for years, but after this disaster of a visit, I'm done for good. The restaurant was filthy when we walked in crumbs on every surface, tables left dirty, and not a single staff member seemed to care. It was honestly disgusting and made me wonder if they pay this little attention to cleanliness in the kitchen, too. Our server, Angie, was shockingly unprofessional. From the start, she acted like helping us was a chore. Every question about the menu was met with "I don't know" or "I'm not sure." If you're working in a restaurant and can't be bothered to learn the menu, why are you there? But the worst part: while clearing our table, Angie dropped a full cup of sake all over my outfit soaked my clothes and even got inside my phone. Not only did she not apologize, she just shrugged and repeated, "It was an accident," as if that excused everything. She didn't offer to help, didn't offer to cover my dry cleaning, didn't even show a hint of concern for ruining my night. I asked for a manager, expecting at least some basic professionalism or an attempt to make things right. Instead, Angie returned to the table with even more attitude, telling us someone else would take over. When the manager finally bothered to show up, they barely acknowledged the situation and offered zero solutions not even the bare minimum of an apology or a gesture like covering my dry cleaning for the outfit they ruined. This is a complete failure of management. If this is how the staff is trained to treat loyal customers, I can only imagine how they treat everyone else. The food isn't good enough to justify being treated like an inconvenience. Amakara has clearly stopped caring about their customers. I left feeling disrespected, ignored, and smelling like sake. Went with some coworkers for lunch. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. Very attentive without being too much. Made sure water was refilled and plates were cleared. I had a couple rolls and miso soup and we shared a mixed tempura. Everything was very good. The tempura was nice and crispy and hot, shrimp was juicy and not overcooked. The spider roll was also very pretty liked the three types of tabiko on top. The hamachi jalapeno roll was great too. The design is modern and comfortable. Plenty of seating. Agedashi tofu is pretty good. Have tried several places but this place has it just right. Rainbow roll was one of their popular rolls! Recommend ordering that. Our fave was the mixed sashimi. The pieces were thick! All the fish was very fresh like they had just come out of the ocean. I was impressed. The scallop had thinly sliced like pieces in between and was the chefs kiss on it. Complement the scallops so well. None of the fish had any weird fishy taste to it at all, which was great! The tuna was beautiful. The octopus wasn't rubbery or too chewy either. Salmon was on point. The mixed sashimi is a perfect amount for two people. Our waiter was pretty attentive too and had good recommendations for us. The menu has a wide range of items and everything looked good at the nearby tables. Didn't order a drink but they had some specials and the ube drink looked really good. Tips... the parking lot is small with no street parking in front. May need to get parking across the street. No reservations- will not seat you until all members of your party are present. Table for two is very small- see if you can get a booth. If at a small table do not order everything at once as it won't all fit. Limited space between tables. If you are seated near a large group it can be very noisy. Unlike most fine dining establishments, when they put a suggested 20% tip, it is a tip based on the tax as well- so a 18% tip is actually more accurate for a 20% tip. read more

I just realized that I haven't Yelped one of my favorite sushi spots in the East Bay despite uploading over 100 photos across the last decade of meals here. I still remember dining at their old location just a few blocks away. They relocated to this current location years ago with a larger footprint and more seating. It can and will get crowded here on weekend evenings. Your best bet is to join the Yelp Waitlist through the Yelp app about 30-45 minutes prior to arrival on busy nights. For starters: The grilled edmame is so good here! Order this version instead of the steamed version for a treat. The robata grill's char flavor is amazing! Although we make tempura at home, it's still nice to order it at a restaurant every once in a while. We usually order their mixed tempura for a good variety. For sushi: It's always fresh and well-made. The standard sake, hamachi, tobiko with quail egg yolk, ama ebi, toro, uni (from Mendocino the last few times), unagi, and amberjack have always been excellent! I tried their chef's choice mixed sashimi plate last time and loved it. For rolls, I've ordered the following which have all been great: Red Dragon Roll - This consists of spicy tuna, tempura shrimp, spicy may, and red onions. Lemon salmon roll - This is basically a California roll base topped w/ salmon and lemon slices Jalapeno Hamachi Roll - Hamachi and avocado inside the roll topped with jalapeno slices They do offer about 8 sushi options for vegetarians, our favorite being their tempura aspagus roll which also comes with a side of salad. There's also inari or a grilled eggplant nigiri. One plus is the option to sub for brown rice for a small upcharge. The ramen here is surprisingly delicous. The broth is on par with dedicated ramen restaurants. They offer a small kids menu with items ranging from chicken / beef teriyaki, katsu, and plain ramen or udon. It's always a hit with the kids. Great lunch combos here! The fried oysters and sesame chicken combo is my go-to. The chicken is lightly fried, perfectly crispy, and topped with a tasty sauce. They definitely make it better than most places. I love dining at Amakara. However, If I had to note one negative...it'd have to be their parking situation. That's the only drawback. While there are a few spaces behind the restaurant, most of the parking is located within the adjacent condo parking structure. My final review of 2025 goes to Amakara! The food was delicious with plenty of vegetarian options. They also had a large cocktail menu, including a seasonal churro espresso martini that I loved! We got the cucumber salad and the miso glazed eggplant to start. Both were delicious, the eggplant was something I had never tried before and we loved it! We got the spicy miso soup as well, which was delicious. For the rolls we had the Golden Shrimp and the Avocado Cucumber Roll. Both were great! For Dessert we had the tempura ice cream, which we loved and we cant wait to go back and try other items on the menu! The place can be expensive depending on what you order, but most of the stuff is reasonably priced and not as expensive as you would think! The service was good. Our waiter was super nice, bringing us more than enough extra ginger and offering to remake the spicy miso soup if it was too spicy. (it wasn't) There were a few times we were waiting for dishes to be cleared, or our water to be refilled, but otherwise we had a wonderful experience. Decor is attractive and non-traditional--in a good way--for a sushi restaurant. They do not take reservations, so there are far too many people lingering just inside the door and outside. We were on the Yelp waitlist. Estimate was 20-30 minutes and we were seated in 40 minutes. A few unusual elements could be easily fixed. On top of the sushi bar are Kirkland Stretch-Tite wrap boxes. Hm. These really take away from the completeness of watching the sushi chefs. Two, the servers wear exam gloves. I've never seen this anywhere. Some in our party like that they wore gloves. (Reminder to all that patrons are only safeguarded if one changes gloves with each table. In this model, only the server is safeguarded.) Initially was on regional street, and was notable for its stand out qualities, moved to Dublin blvd and Golden Gate blvd. Its ambiance is exceptional, with a wonderful team. The firm noodles against the green onions, and broth is very tasty. The Saba Shioyaki was fried to beautiful perfection. Its been an ongoing favorite. I was surprised that my wife didn't get the soft shell crab or spider roll, but we did love the grilled edamame. I ordered an uni over rice and seaweed, the uni from Japan, vs the California coast. The Japanese uni had a delightful ocean flavor. I ordered the Tuna Ceviche Salad. It could definitely serve as a light lunch on its own. It was a good size with a variety of greens and a beautiful dressing, fresh tuna throughout, very fresh flavors. Let me not forget the type of sesame crisps that were a very tasty treat, 3 delicious squares. I also had a Sapporo on tap, and there were a variety of tap and bottled choices. I knew I should have ordered their signature spicy crunchy rainbow, and probably the calamari, but we definitely had enough with what we did get. It's dark, moody, and honestly really cute, plus the place is huge so it never feels cramped. They have a really good happy hour which is always a plus I actually had my birthday party here with a group of 15 and it fit everyone comfortably, which I loved. The staff is always so nice and accommodating and the overall energy inside is great. The only downside is that sometimes the wait can be long, and they won't seat you until your whole party is there which can be annoying but honestly once you're inside it's worth it. No free entertainment at lunch time. Lol I'm trying to be more selective on my meal I.e., healthiness choices. So I went with the sushi lunch special. This special includes 5 chef Choice of sushi, unagi and roll. The sushi tasted fresh yet bland whereas the rice on the roll was dry. Service could be more attentive as water glasses were empty for a while before it was notice, and wait person needed to be flagged for help on a couple of occasions. We have been coming here quite often, but tonight, we had service so outstanding that I need to write and give a shoutout to Ozzy!!! Every time we go to the movies at Regal, we came here. Every time we have guests from out of town ( or out of the country ) we bring them here. This place does not take reservation, but there is a waitlist to join. The food here is consistently good, the vibe lively, service is good. But tonight Ozzy totally impressed me, he was engaging, brought extra napkins and silverware before we have to ask, came back to ask if we needed more drinks, brought refills for soft drinks, checked on us many times to make sure the food was delicious....we felt so pampered !!! The karaage chicken is some of the best I've ever had so juicy and perfectly fried. We went here while in the area in the recommendation of 2 friends. I should have asked what their favorite items were! The place is nice and big but definitely expect long waits for the weekend. You can sign up on Yelp but we still waited awhile which would have been fine if we didn't have the baby. I do appreciate though that the hostess did accommodate a bigger seating area for us because we had a stroller. We ordered the grilled edamame and mixed tempura to start, then chicken tonkatsu and spicy rainbow roll for entrees. I liked the tempura and the edamame and my husband really liked his tonkatsu. I felt like my rainbow roll was just ok. However, the service was lovely, she was efficient and attentive (I wish I remembered her name!) I would like to go back and try what my friends recommended: sashimi, grilled squid, and grilled mushrooms. read more

The food is solid; nothing particularly a standout other than the Tontoro since not a lot of places have robata on their menu. Service was a tad slow on a Saturday night, as there were many large parties and a lot of people staying around even though they were done with their meal, since it's the only retail store in the block. Parking can be difficult when it's busy, so recommend coming early, especially with large parties and putting yourself on the help waitlist early! The entrance was packed with waiting patrons as we left. Very solid Japanese food in the Dublin area. read more
