Superb addition to the dining scene in the TriValley, and it's within walking distance of our home! We stopped by last night around 7:30 and there were only a few customers inside, which means the word isn't out yet! We were seated right away, then ordered appetizers and entrées - Gyoza, Takoyaki, Jalapeño Bomb, Sake Don, Chicken Udon, and a Mixed Bento Box with Chicken Teriyaki and California Roll - and shared them all family style. The food was superb - fresh and flavorful. We enjoyed every dish. My favorites were the gyoza, sake don, teriyaki chicken, and the chicken udon. Service was friendly. We've been coming here regularly since not long after they first opened. It's a neighborhood sushi restaurant, so it's not a fancy or trendy place, but it's clean and well-maintained. Since the owner is actively involved in the day-to-day operation, you can tell they do an excellent job of maintaining consistent quality. The tempura here is especially impressive. It's always light, crispy, and clean--not greasy at all--and everything is cooked beautifully. This isn't just based on one visit, either. Whenever we're craving sushi, this is the place we keep coming back to, and the quality has remained consistently good every single time. There may be more beautiful or more well-known sushi restaurants, but it's surprisingly hard to find a place that serves food as clean, fresh, and consistently well-prepared as this one. This is a beautiful and intimate restaurant run by a sweet family. When you walk in you're immediately greeted with a warm smile and kind service. The food arrives quickly and is presented gorgeously, and they do not skim on the ingredients. Everything is top quality and priced very reasonably. We came here for dinner on a Saturday and were seated right away. Ordered the $35 Sushi bento box with spicy tuna rolls, the $28 teriyaki chicken bento box with sake rolls, and a bowl of sake rice. The fish slices were thick and fresh, and the tempura was perfectly fried. The teriyaki chicken was juicy and soft. Between the two bento boxes we had a lot of food! Tried KatsuMe Sushi for the first time via a delivery service, so can only comment on their takeout food, but based on what we had and perusing the rest of their menu, we are planning to get over to the restaurant in the near future to eat in. Regarding their takeout, the food arrived nicely packed and presented. The only non-sushi item was their fried gyoza which included a well-seasoned pork filling and soy-based dipping sauce. Among the sushi dishes, the nigiri mix was the standout, with a fresh tasting assortment of 8 pieces of nigiri per the chef's choice. We enjoyed two types of maguro, hamachi, salmon, harami, whitefish, ebi and unagi. The California roll was excellent quality as well, and we enjoyed the Three Amigos roll (raw tuna, salmon, hamachi, cucumber and avocado wrapped by rice and topped with spicy mayonnaise and tobiko) as well as the Dancing Ebi roll (shrimp tempura and cucumber wrapped in rice and topped with unagi sauce and tobiko). The Three Amigos roll was the best of the three rolls we tried. Prices are on the slightly higher side but on par for the area. One of the better bento boxes I've had. It also includes miso soup. Great value for the quality of the food. I got chicken teriyaki and shrimp & vegetable tempura. We decided to check out this new restaurant for lunch. It's in the same complex as Gene's, closer to the donut place. Parking was very easy in the shared lot. It wasn't busy, as we got there as they opened, but a few more patrons trickled in. The restaurant is extremely clean and we sat in a comfy booth. Employees were super friendly and helpful. One of our favorite Korean-run Japanese restaurants doesn't exist anymore, so DH was happy to see this one pop up. He ordered his favorite - the "Korean chirashi" ($23.00) - and it did not disappoint! It's basically different kinds of sashimi bits mixed with toasted sesame oil on top of shredded lettuce and rice, and finally topped with microgreens and masago. Fish was very fresh and it seemed like a good blend. Comes with a fantastic Korean chili sauce on the side in a squeeze bottle. Give it a try, it will also become your fave! ;) The next best thing was the Tonkotsu Ramen ($20.00). Soup base was flavorful and the pork slices were tender and coated with a soy-based glaze. Noodles were pretty good, medium firmness. There weren't a lot of toppings, but I prefer my ramen simple like this. The soft boiled egg was perfectly cooked. The Island Roll ($18) was okay, but we did catch some strange after-taste. The flavors didn't mesh well. Perhaps the salmon was a little musty or preservative taste from the shrimp? We would need to try some of their other fish items to get a better sense of what to order. Often, the sashimi items use better ingredients than the rolls. I would say the value was about average for the area. Seemed pricey for lunch, but we were totally stuffed after eating here. I ordered takeout and got the katsu along with a couple of rolls, and the portions were disappointing--especially the katsu, which came with very little rice and salad. The chicken was super juicy from the pieces my roommate let me have and it was so much better than the pork. Either way it was really good and service was great. Parking was plentiful in the strip mall shopping center. We started with the Garlic Edename. The sauce was garlic and maybe ponzu sauce with sea salt. When you run your teeth down the bean you scrap the sauce too that is yummy. Attentive service but the portion for the $23 hamachi don was paltry. The pieces of fish were fresh and good but very slim and small. I didn't like their wasabi because it was too wet and pasty. Restaurant itself is clean and I liked the jazz music. Food : 5 stars, as we've come to expect from this gem of a sushi restaurant in Pleasanton. Delicious and fresh fish, we enjoyed the tako sunomono appetizer, unagi hand roll, albacore hand roll, and a couple rolls (snow and the double salmon). All was well prepared and hit the spot. Service : 1 star. Absolutely terrible, where do I start!? Our tako appetizer got served to the wrong table then brought to us after a few minutes, not a good way to start in having our food brought to another table. We asked for a cup of hot tea, which was again brought to the same wrong table. When we asked about the tea, the server picked up the cup from the other table and brought to us. I'm sorry, but a new cup of tea should have been poured and brought to us, unacceptable practice. None of our finished plates were cleared off the table, which he certainly saw when reaching over to pull the bottle of soy sauce off the table when we were still eating. The icing on this poor piece of cake was asking for the check, which if he would have come to our table for anything would have noticed we had finished everything and needed to pay. No, we had to flag him down instead snd asked for the check, which he acknowledged and said he'd bring it right over. He continued clearing things off empty tables, then brought the payment machine to another table for them to pay. We had enough at this point and let him know that we had asked for our check ahead of them. 5 star food, 1 star service averages out to the deserved 3-star review, and reflected in the 10% tip, which really should all go to the sushi chefs, since they actually did their jobs well. I hope this was a one-off incident of poor service as we really enjoy this sushi restaurant and come at least once a quarter. Fingers crossed for next time. read more

Amazing spot! The sushi was super fresh and delicious. The staff were really friendly and so incredibly nice to our toddler. They immediately brought out a plastic plate and utensils, a high chair, and they even asked if it was okay to give her a piece of cake from their own birthday cake after our meal. Mom was in the mood for some Japanese the other day and I saw this place recently opened up so had to try it out. The place itself seems to be more open and remodeled from the previous owners, but now seems to be more spacious if memory serves me right. The waitress were very attentive and patient when taking our orders and grabbing our empty plates as we finished them to make more room in the table. The food itself was overall very good. The calamari had a nice crunch and the taste and flavor hit the spot. As for me, I ordered the salmon bento box and the sushi and salad were good but the salmon was a tad salty to me, but still didn't affect the taste of it too much. For me mom, she wanted her normal chicken teriyaki and all was good, decent char on the chicken and she ate a decent amount of her bento box overall. I stopped by Katsumi today after seeing so many rave reviews on the Pleasanton Rants and Raves page, and I'm so glad I did! I ordered the short ribs and a dragon roll -- the short ribs had great flavor (just wish they were a tiny bit more tender. They were tough and skinny) but the dragon roll was absolutely superb. But honestly, what stood out even more than the food was the customer service. The woman who helped me was so kind and welcoming. She took the time to chat, genuinely cared about my experience, and had the warmest smile and energy. It felt like she really valued my visit, and that's something you don't see everywhere these days. All in all, i think they excel with their rolls so I will be sticking to that. read more

After checking the menu beforehand, we had planned to try their cooked food, but ended up going with chirashi and the sashimi/sushi bento. The cuts are really generous, the fish was fresh, and the service is great! For the sashimi/sushi bento, you get 6 pieces of sashimi, 4 nigiri, a maki roll, seaweed salad, and miso... for $33!!! For the chirashi, you get miso, 12 pieces of assorted sashimi, 1 ebi, and 2 tamago... for $23!!! All of their prices are very reasonable, but the chirashi is easily the best value in the entire Bay Area, so now we know where to go whenever we have a sashimi craving! read more
